Reference Dell EqualLogic HIT/VSM - VMware license terms.

Hello.

I read the release notes of Virtual Storage Manager 4.0, vSphere, conditions of licence, they are required:

License terms for vSphere
VSM comes with licenses and the following features:

VSM: VSphere license any

VASA: vCenter 5.0 or later version, ESXi 4.0 or later, any vSphere license
In addition, the storage array firmware allows use the following features that VSM is installed:

vStorage API for integration (VAAI) table: business, Enterprise Plus on ESXi license
4.1 or later.

Issues related to the:

1. I'll be able to run VSM with vSphere Essentials Plus? VAAI at least requires vSphere Enterprise License. What are the consequences if I deploy with vSphere Essentials Plus.

2 VSM supports ESXi 5.5 U2?

Thank you

Paul

VASA is a feature you don't need basic VSM features.  Which is what the release notes are trying to say.   VASA allows VMware request more information on storage volumes.   I.e. through VASA VCS calls can show that a volume is RAIDed storage, integrates snapshots or replicas.   Currently, the usefulness of the VASA is limited, even when it is available.   VASA is the first step to VMware to better understand a storage array capabilities. More features will be coming in future versions of ESXi.

However, to make the VASA work any, the storage provider must provide software 'glue' for specific HW calls of a query of VCS.   VSM, is what has the code, known as a "provider of VASA.   A translator of sorts.

Kind regards

Hello. I have a dust collection Dell EqualLogic 6010 in my test harness. He was sent by another office, for reasons unknown. I would use this feature to unload a few backup copies of vm in the development of our san to this device of 16 smaller disk.  I only have one switch that comes with it, but for its intended use, this should be good. I only will link a physical server to it where my backup software. (I wish I could just direct connect, but I read that it is not possible, or at least not recommended) The problem is... I don't know where to start.

I tried to put in place of guides, manuals and Setup guides, but the single pdf I find is more on limits, best practices, what he can do, etc., rather than from step 1. (like, indications which include the implementation of rails and all that usually skip us... lol) Can anyone help with a quick course guide or accident? Maybe point me in the direction of certain documents?

For example... series in I do? If so, what are the default creds? There may be a default ip address that I can connect my laptop in to start the initial game up? Or y at - it a config that I can run on the same subnet as EMC VNX implemented who will find unconfigured devices? I really can't find any of this set up information of this device. I hope someone can help.

    Thank you very much. :)

    Hello

You have a username on the EQL support site?   The documentation is a quick installation guide.

1.), you can use the serial port.  9600,8, n, 1 NO flowcontrol.   (Series cisco cables do not work)   Grpadmin default login, password grpadmin. (assuming that it has not already been implemented)

2.) If you have an EQL support account, you can also download the HIT for Windows or Linux.   Who has the Remote Installation Wizard software.  Who will scan the local subnet for the not configured matrices.  Then allow you to configure it through the user interface.

Re: switches.  You need a 10GbE switch.  The 6010 will not negotiate until 1GbE.

  • Reference Dell EqualLogic Multipath (e/s high flow)

We recently bought a Dell EqualLogic SAN. Our main goal for this device was to begin to use pools of resources and be able to do a few HA and Live migration. We have worked with XenServer and Xen Cloud for a while and got no e/s on iScsi performance we were hoping for. With the help of Multipath on the main host machine we get on 250 Mbps (which we are satisfied). On the guest computers, we get only 120 Mbps.

My question to the community of VMWare; If we wanted to use products VMWare is the possibility to get more then 1 Gbps i/o throughput on a guest PC? And if so, if it is a PDF or a post somewhere that could explain how to do this?

    Let me know, thanks!

The doc of the correct configuration is attached... hope that her little help. In my view, it is also sub TR docs when you save your table PS.

  • Reference Dell Equallogic Interface errors

Hi guys, I got a big problem here in my room. My equallogic iscsi interfaces have a lot of erros. What can be?

First of all, make sure you run the latest version of FW and SANHQ table.

Packet errors are often the cause of bad cable, bad switch ports and a misconfiguration on switch iSCSI ports.   The only way to erase the mistakes of packages on Equallogic arrays must restart the table.

(Note: if unable to switch, you can disable protocols spanning tree on ports connect to the table).

    • Use the tech TR1017 report to verify the configuration of the switch and confirm it meets best practices.

    • Run a show of support on the switches to review port errors.   If a Powerconnect or Force10 switch then engage networks dell help examine the switch logs. If another provider, and then engage the seller to switch to help examine the switch logs.

    • Cards network host to firmware update and the latest network card driver

    • The direct link to TR1017:

If the host Linux with Multipath.d, you may need to modify the multipath.conf file to include: tur path_checker in the devices section.

  • Reference Dell Custom Image for Vmware ESXi 5.1

    Hello

where can I find the custom image Dell for ESXi 5.1.

I can only find the ISO Images for 5.0 (4.1). But none for 5.1. Unfortunately the original ISO Vmware image will not work because it does not find a NETWORK card in my Dell R420. Which seems to occur as long as the original image from Vmware does not include the card driver NETWORK Dell to the R420.

I saw that today there is a download section at support.Dell.com for ESXi 5.1 with about 36 files to download. But no ISO Image for ESXi 5.1 as it is 5.0 and before.

Hope someone can help or knows how Dell will bring the custom image.

    Thank you!

  • EqualLogic HIT for VMware

We just purchased a 6100 Equallogic - I was installing the virtual appliance HIT the vCenter plugin - I see that it must have a network connection on the network iSCSI in addition to the management network.

Can I just add a machine virtual port group port to my virtual switch of the existing iSCSI network so I can then add a second network adapter on the virtual computer?

Will there be an impact on performance on iSCSI connections if I do this?

    Thank you!

HY, Yes, we must configure two network cards on the device: one on the MGMT network and the other on the iSCSI network. You can simply add a portgroup VM to the virtual switch iSCSI network (where also the VMkernel ports for iSCSI are configured) and bind it to the NIC to the iSCSI device.

EqualLogic has provided the proper documentation and download the appliance (OVF).

There's no impact on the iSCSI connection by configuring it this way. We use iSCSI on the other virtual machines also with this binding configuration (to use iSCSI on the virtual machine itself).

  • Reference Dell EqualLogic Powershell Script & replicas

    Hi all

I develop a script to extract information on replicas made between two bays EQL PS Series Dell.

For each volume, I keep a history of 10 aftershocks, I use the following command to display all the replicas made of a specific volume.

    > get-eqlreplica - GroupName SANPROD - ReplicationSite SANBCK - VOLUME VolumeName

But I'm unable to get the size for each replica. Is it possible to do this with the cmdlet provided by Dell?

    Thanks for your help!

Currently the cmd - allows PowerShell does not size of replication data.  For now, only the GUI and the SANHQ can show you the size of each replication.

  • Reference Dell R710, Dell and VMware VAAI MD3200

Hi guys, we have 3 x Dell R710 hosts running VMware ESXi hypervisor v5.1. Our SAN is via Dell MD3200 Direct attached storage. We have activated the option of High Performance. My question is about VMware VAAI. In particular, the recommendation of VMware: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1033665 it says: "For more information on support VAAI in a particular storage group or required firmware levels, contact the storage array provider." So I'm wondering: is VAAI supported (or not) with the MD3200... and otherwise: should I be deactivation of VAAI settings as recommended by VMware? What are the potential implications for the performance of deactivation of VAAI... or support DO NOT turn it off? Thank you, Steve

Indeed, you are using a fairly old firmware. The most recent is 07.84.53.60.

To be able to upgrade to this version, you will need a version quite familiar of the MDSM. I would say to download 4.1.2.29 or later, which is 5.0.0.70. All servers Windows and Linux (not VMware or XenServer) server that manage and/or are connected via iSCSI SAN should have their MDSM, updated software before upgrade you the firmware on the raid on the SAN controller.

  • Dell Equallogic PS5000X NIC reference

    Hello

does anyone have experience of SAN Dell Equallogic PS5000X?  I'll put in place at the moment and it seems there are 2 controllers for all of the 3 NIC (6 in total).  I find I cannot use 3 cards and 1 controller in Active mode and can not find a way to get the two controllers to work in unison and the two assets.

I wanted to use 4 network cards for iSCSI traffic on a VLAN giving a rate 4 GB of storage but you can use 2 network cards, giving a throughput of 2 GB and 1 for management.

Is this the only method available for this type of SAN?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Andy

    Hey,.

The PS is an active / standby. A controller is active. The other will be the shot if the first of all a problem. You have only a configuration to do.

You configure 3 interfaces in the GUI. eth0, 1, 2.

The second controller will use this interface when you need.

You can dedicate a management port, but Dell recommends that you connect all of your ports to the ISCSI network.

    Hope this helps

  • 3 Dell Equallogic PS6010

    Hello

I have 3 Dell Equallogic PS6010 Raid 6 accelerated what is the optimal configuration for performance and reliability. Should I put all members in the same pool with some volumes? using this configuration what happens if one of the members die in the pool volumes will still be online? Or do I have to create a separate pool for each Member and syncrep everywhere?

    Thank you!

    Hello Quackattack,

If you have several members in the same pool, then default data for each volume to be spread out in the members.  Up to three by default, unless the volume is too large to fit on only three members.

So in the case of Member failure, all volumes in common with this member will go offline until the table is restored to service.  Members in the same pool work together so that will give you the best performance, but at a greater risk.  The berries are extremely redundant to prevent this.  Also, members in a pool even with permutation of the blocks to keep the I/O latency to the balance between the members.  If a member with a lot of IO will send blocks occupied another Member and take blocks of slow motion of this member.  Keeping the latency in space and tick as well balanced.   It's advanced performance load balancing.

But if this is a priority, then put them in separate categories would be better.  You would have to manually manage IO loads to prevent a pool being saturated, while others might be slowed by comparison.

You can also do a combo.  Put two members in a pool, then someone else in another to the syncrep on your volumes. Giving you a balance between too.

Much depends on the load that you expect to apply to the group.  In addition, if you can levarge improvements EQL MPIO, like MEM for ESXi, HIT / THE for Linux or HIT / ME to Windows.

If you use ESXi, VMware requires also to company or company + to run MPIO extensions like MEM.  If you cannot use MEM, then this PDF has info on how to improve fuction MPIO using VMware standard Round Robin.  As well as other tips as well.

If you haven't already done so, install SANHQ v3.x to better monitor your group (s).

  • Reference Dell customized version of ESXi 5.5

I just bought a Dell PowerEdge T320 for a virtualization host laboratory and installed custom Dells 5.5 ESXi hypervisor leave (dell.com) on the bare metal.  My question is did anyone know how this license since it has not been downloaded from the vmware.com website?

Can I go out with ESXi installation directly from vmware and more later manually installed drivers for compatibility with the Dell hardware?

    Thank you!

Reference custom Dell uses 5.5 ISO ESXi a normal VMware ESXi key provided by VMware license.  A normal installation of ESXi 5.5 it's already contains Dell drivers if you don't have to worry to inject drivers later, etc.

  • Installation of the MEM and VMware licenses

    Hello group,

If a client vSphere 5.x standard, that is not business or business plus. Can the customer install the EQL MEM module without breaking any rule VMware licensing?

    Hello

Joerg is correct, that VMware requires a business or company license + to activate the feature.  Joerg has mentioned in the past, he has seen work on other licenses, but I can't bring it to work properly.  Especially after you restart the node of ESXi.

It will show as enabled, but the behavior under is basically identical to FIXED paths.

If the alternative is to use VMware Round Robin and change by way of 1000 to 3/o.   Run this command to the shell ESXi.  Restart the nodes.

    esxcli storage nmp ATAS add s "VMW_SATP_EQL" - M "100th-00" PEI "VMW_PSP_RR" o "IOPS / s = 3" "". "

In addition, here is a link that covers other best practices for ESXi with storage EQL.

  • Range Dell EqualLogic has stopped working when you restart the failure

During and after an interruption of scheduled maintenance work, ESXi cannot mount on our Dell EqualLogic Array data warehouses and I have no idea why.

We lack ESXi 5.0.  Shut down us throughout the weekend, replaced the network cables and when we returned to our ESXi hosts could not see the Bay EqualLogic iSCSI, but you could see several other berries on the same storage system iSCSI.  Digging into logs, I see the ESXi host making the CHAP authentication to the EqualLogic Bay, and the said table it connects successfully, then it loses connection about 10 seconds later.  10 seconds more ESXi tent reconnection to the EqualLogic and the same thing is happening again.

I see several newspapers in ESXi hostd.log indicating this table goes ONLINE and off LINE and another line indicating "sense data Possible" leading me to http://KB.VMware.com/kb/289902 .  I feel really disabled at the moment because it's the Bay of storage accommodation our vCenter Server, which puts us in trouble right now.

Also, if I try to "Add Storage", ESXi sees EqualLogic stores exist (watch a sufficient volume, size etc.).  However, as I'm trying to add them (via vSphere Client), step 1 takes a lot of time to finish, step 2 indicates the "disks are empty" (which I don't believe), then after an another long this timeout a popup error.

Are there commands or utilities that are good for the diagnosis of iSCSI specifically?

I can post more specific journal details if it is useful.

PS - The new network cables are ok in communication with other storage targets, and it has not replaced the EqualLogic cables.

Fixed; the MTU setting on my storage switch was mowing part of storage traffic.  Here are the troubleshooting steps that I went through, maybe it'll help someone else.  The solution didn't exactly have anything specific to do with ESXi or EqualLogic.  Basic troubleshooting and digging.

Newspapers/events storage array inspection revealed he saw and accepted the ESXi host connection appempts.  I saw messages to the effect of:

-Connection of ESXi iqn blah blah blah established; Successful CHAP authentication.

-10 seconds later: Connection reset / abandoned by peers.

-5 seconds later: ESXi connection successfully established...

    (rinse and repeat several times)

Inspection of the file hostd.log ESXi showed several messages of 'connection reset by peer '.  The storage array and ESXi have been pointing to the other... so the switch is the only thing in the middle.

    Troubleshooting steps now:

-using the vmkping ping on the table of the ESXi - success: vmkping 192.168.1.20

    -using the vmkping ping on the table of the ESXi with a size of 9000 (jumbo frame size): NO RESPONSE! : (vmkping) s 9000 192.168.100.20<-- this="" is="" where="" the="" money="" was="" for="" finding="" the="">

MTU has been set at around 9000.  It turns out that the switch should be set a little higher (taking into account headers of packets? who knew)

So this Setup ran for more than a year of intact working and just stopped when we took everything downstairs and brought it up.
