  I couldn't after several attempts to install Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (KB948465).  I finished all of the instructions that will appear on the screen to fix this problem and nothing works.  I'm not a PC geek and want just to get this update loaded.  I hope that this will solve the constant stop my IE WHENEVER I use it.  I'm at a point where I want to just remove Vista and go back to XP.  I NEVER had a problem with it.

  Applications, (Norton and McAfee) are notorious for not not upgrade (or uninstalling) itself.

  [You may want to print these instructions for reference offline. If a step said to reboot, reboot.]

  1. download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

  1B. download the tool McAfee Consumer Product Removal, save it to your desktop: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

  2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

  3. After completing some you have a copy of your handy product key, uninstall all Norton software (including LiveUpdate and everything Norton Add ons) via Control Panel | Programs | Uninstall a program (or Control Panel |) Programs and features, if you are using the classic view).

  4 IMPORTANT! -Online activate Windows Firewall immediately after the restart.

  NB: Now you're "working without a net": no to ANYTHING else online (e.g., navigation, reading e-mail, chat) until you have completed step #7 below!

  5. right click on the file that you saved in step # 1 above and select run as administrator.  DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

  8. open Internet Explorer (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 & run the difficulty.

  9. open Internet Explorer (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 & run it in DEFAULT and modes difficulty then AGGRESSIVE. [1]

  10. restart once again & test.

  I downloaded Service Pack 1 several times, but it appears in the list as a major update when I do a search for updates. Service Pack 1 does not appear to have been installed correctly.

  You can ensure that a download manager is used for this process, so not yet of corruption that happens.   Search live.com or your search engine preferred download manager and select the one sure what you will find.

  Another way to look at this question is to get information of the event viewer on the failure that occurred.  To review event viewer / click on the ORB Start / computer right click / Select manage / select event viewer.

  Find the information in Event Viewer on the failure of the update installation and provide this information on the forum.  As well as if there is an error, you receive what it is and ID # is.

  Safety Note: always have on hand a good backup before you start any installs/updates/or diagnosis of troubleshooting.

  I want windows to automatically download updates. I have my pc set to automatically download updates every day at 01:00. However, when I turn on my pc at about 09:00, he lets know me there are updates, but it will not install automatically. I install manually.   My internet does not work and a message came up saying "internet explore has stopped working, there is a problem, windows will let you know if there is a solution" a box then came advising me to install Windows Vista Service Pack 2 and I did and now my laptop is messed up. After that I connected, a black screen appears then I found a solution in another forum and able to-> explorer.exe task manager and a something regedit and once my computer has restarted after it is a message saying "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in a minute." and internet does more either.

  I'm under that Windows Vista 64 bit with SP1 installed.  Windows Update seems to work very well I don't get updated however, I never received notification of update of Windows Vista Service Pack 2.

  I tried to install SP2 manually, but it fails with the error code 0 x 80041010.

  I also ran Windows (64-bit) system preparation tool and it ended without encountering any problems.

  Every thing downloads and prepares to install, the installation begins and the box pop up advises to close all programs and installation can last an hour or more with many stops of the computer. I followed the instructions but it still fails.

  I hope you do well. Chavumaboy, to solve this problem, try to perform a clean boot and then install a standalone package for Windows Vista Service Pack 2

  > Minimum will disable all third party services. It allows to eliminate software conflicts. Please follow the steps below to perform a clean boot:
     
  -Connect to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
  -Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the start search box and press ENTER to start the System Configuration
  Utility.
  -If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password or click on continue.
  -On the general tab, click Selective startup, and then clear the check box load startup items.
  -On the Services tab, click to select the skin all the Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.
  -Click OK and then click on restart.
