Partition a USB

Hey everybody.

I have to use Windows for some reason, and I need to partition a USB key so that there are 4 primary Partitions available.

I know how to Linux and I did. But when I start Windows, this cool super OS does not detect my Partitions.

So what did I do get Windows on a level of normal work and detect my partitions or to create in Windows and USE?

Hope you can help me out here.

Partitioning is not possible for removable media. But you can change some settings s.t that USB is recognized as a fixed media.

  • Using a Mac to partition a USB external hard drive to use to start Windows 7 on a PC

    Hello

My PC hard drive died recently, and I need to reinstall Windows 7. Fortunately, I have a Windows 7 .iso file on my Macbook Pro. I also have an external hard drive USB empty. I try to use the Mac (in particular the disk utility program) partition this hard drive and load the .iso file in it, with the intention to start the system and install Windows 7 on my PC. (NB. I have a new internal hard drive which I intend to install Windows on to, but it's something that I should be able to handle later and should not be relevant at the moment.)

As my DVD player also decided to break (I had not used for a long time), I can't burn the .iso to disk image file and start that way.

So my question is, what is actually in all possible ways to use my WD 500 GB external hard drive to boot Windows 7 from USB? If so, is it possible to configure the hard disk with the .iso image file using a mac? I think I need somehow do "bootable" my hard drive to boot from it, but I don't know how to do this using a mac, so that it will be compatible for Windows startup.

I've had this problem for days now and nothing I try seems to work - I tried what seems like all combinations of formatting, partitioning, extracting, BIOS-set-up-ing and file-system-change I can think of. Any help will be really appreciated. Also, if you need information such as specifications, just let me know and I will try to provide all the details I can.

In addition, I understand that there a lot of messages on the boot from external hard drives, but I looked carefully and found nothing for my situation (more precisely using a mac).

Thanks in advance for help; If all goes well there is something obvious that I'm missing that I can fix it easily.

Erase the disk via disk utility and then partition the system - regardless of the current format was used at the plant probably lack the TPG structures which should.  Does erase everything on the drive, so be sure that there is nothing on the disk you need.

  • Unable to encrypt USB / El Capitan

Using a Macbook Air running El Capitan 10.11.4...

(Sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I've never understood how to navigate to the right place n communities Support from Apple).

I tried (for literally a few hours) to find how pw - protect / encrypt a new USB key. Although I have read and followed the instructions to more than a dozen son / pages online, * nothing * works, because my system does not simply offer the options described. To cut a very long story short, I used disk utility to erase the drive, but never did have the option of "password" on the screen "next" mentioned repeatedly - there is no next screen, just a local saying 'Done '. Then I discovered several discussions mentioning the need to partition the USB key to encrypt - that seems weird to me, but I guess I'm out of my depth. Anyway, "Partition" is always grayed out. I * so * found son saying that, so the partition, I first need to choose "GUID" partition of the table - but absolutely nowhere in the process are only some sort of partition of an option. At no time do I get nothing except a NAME box, a box of FORMAT and DELETE / CANCEL.

Oh - on another (official, Apple) help screen, he said in El Capitan, you could simply Ctrl-click on the USB in the Finder. (Interestingly, no other screen I saw didn't mention this.) Of course, that appear a box to enter a new password... followed by the error message that I must first of all put in place a GUID partition table.

Naively, I thought this would be a three-minute operation, but I'm completely stumped.

You can only encrypt a drive formatted for Mac.  If this isn't the case, you will need to format will erase the drive.

In disk utility, select the drive and delete it. As the format, select Mac OS extended (journaled). That will make a table partition GUID.

    # Problem, it is that your recovery image is useless now. When you want to use the external device for installation of recovery image is must be created as device start and it can be done if you use the preinstalled recovery media creator.

Recovery image is saved on the HARD drive and fixed with the so-called markers. Recovery media creator can find these markers and start using the recovery saved on the HARD disk image. After changing structure of HARD disk partitions these markers disappeared and this is the reason why you see this error message.

I'm afraid you must order now new recovery m FRO Toshiba drive and you can do it on - https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

  • disk partition utility grey buttons

The new disk in el capitan utility is driving me crazy.

To begin with why I can't partition during erasure.  Where is this option.

I was able to partition a USB once but I can just manage to do it again.

In the partition screen the + and - buttons are dimmed and I can't fill anything in the size field.  When I go to different Formats al of a sudden field size is editable, but you enter a value doesn't change anything.

The thing is I managed to do it before (just before the 10.11.2 update), but he was also extremely heavy.

in any case really start silike Mac OS more, things that when easy are getting harder with all versions.  Good example of all leave well enough alone or better get tested.

They have changed the functioning of a disk utility and not necessarily for the better.
Firstly, you must first clear a new drive to format before you can partition then it.

In addition, you cannot select the partition button unless you select the entire disk, not an individual partition (even if that covers the entire disk) ve

But more annoyingly, as far as I found (I could be wrong I guess) you can leave the part of the disk not FORMATTED. I tried to leave the space for a my Samsung 850 Evo SSD oversupply, but it automatically reformatted the remaining as a partition space if you do the first partition smaller than the size of the full disc.

    In short:

The problem is in the stage of Windows where you select the partition to install it's unpossible click Next:

An error message appears that says: cannot find any partition or create an install for... but the hard drive is visible and its also possible to create and delete partitions, so the error message is bull * beep *.

My thougth is that sandisk stick is detected as disk sata hard and is internally by mistake folders as first hard disk, if I get out the stick at the stage where I select the partition, click Refresh, reconnect the key, other refreshment so I can install on the hard disk.

What is the problem with your extreme poles? Any other key usb 3.0 works well.

To pull the stick and so on is just a workaround dirty, I bougth the stick because of the speed!

I have searched high and low for more more information ob this odd behavior. But all i can find is either not reliable or solutions such as the one tried. No real reason as to why or what is the problem.

I suspect it has something do to with the way the partition tables are setup on the source media (in this case a san disk usb drive.) I would start there.

Windows setup will run a refresh on the USB bus at the point that you are having problems with.

One way to get around it, is to pull the USB disk out, then put it back in, and go back one step of Windows setup, and try again. This works in most cases with this error.

It's a good question. I also own the same drive, and have the same issue with it.

I have a feeling that the controller in the stick is slow at initializing, and is simply not fast enough for Windows Setup. If you watch the USB stick when Windows is setting up, you can see that it's being initialized, (just before setup asks what drive you want to install Windows on) as my mouse and keyboard also disconnect and reconnect at the same time.

Stimpy can be correct. One way i found to solve this problem is to create some unallocated space in the drive(150 mb or more).

Even though you weren't talking about that, I don't know why it wouldn't work. I've reformatted them before, Fat32 and NTFS.

OK, I went looking for references. Yes you can do it, but it seems it is not as easy to do as I thought, at least for everyone. Some folks say the standard built-in Windows 7 tools do it automatically, some say they don't. I still haven't tried it, since I don't have a USB stick available to partition at the moment. Some references say that that you need to flip the USB removable bit so that Windows will see the stick as a fixed drive before you can partition it. I also found two different tutorials or how to partition a USB stick here and here. So, yes, one way or another it can be done.

        Cheers and Regards

Yeah, I have looked in to this a while ago. And found that you cannot partition this USB stick. It needs to be seen by the system as a fixed drive, but for whatever reason, Sandisk are not interested in helping their customers out with this, as it is a simple change to the drives firmware, like you described. There is a rumour going round that Sandisk are going to realease an updated firmware that will make this drive compatible with Windows To Go, and turn it into a fixed disk. I think that's unlikely, but you never know!

Have a look here, it seems Sandisk support simply does not care.

You can use the 8 GB to start Windows and Linux in row. Also, you can use Grub as bootloader to choose between the two operating systems.

You can divide the USB into Partitions as you will with the HARD drive. I think that you will have a utility to do this.

  • Mark a STOR E 1.8 as removable steel for bios/Windows

I have a 250 GB 1.8 usb Stor E drive steel. He is recognized as local hard drive (not also removable) in windows and my problem: also of the bios recognized as HARD drive which he declares as a second hard disk and not removable.

I want to be able to boot from it by making it a removable drive so that the bios recognizes the drive as "removable media" which is part of the boot sequence:
    1. removable media
2 disc (boots of built on the HARD drive first)
    3. initializing the network...

Eventually, it would be a success if I toggle the little removable media (RMB)? So that every system that I plug it recognize it as a removable (I hope). This hypothesis is correct?

    Summary:
My 1.8 is already bootable and works very well. Formatted NTFS which is a must for me. Any solution that needs fat is therefore not possible for me (I doubt it would work anyway). BIOS treats as HARD drive as opposed to a USB drive.

    It s a common USB2 SATA HDD

    > I want to be able to boot from it by making it a removable disk
As far as I know boot from devices depends on the BIOS and not all laptops support boot from USB HDD. My laptop supports booting from USB, but only (no USB HDD) flash drive.

    > Possibly it would be a success if I toggle the little removable media (RMB)? So that every system that I plug it recognize it as a removable (I hope). This hypothesis is correct?

Not sure about that. I know you can remove the forest of removable media USB keys but never tried to activate (if possible) on HDD USB but I used the tool called Lexar BootIt which could remove the RMB. There is an option called Flip removable Bit. Then the new partition on USB devices must be created

But the use of these tools is at your own risks such as mentioned, never tried him with a HDD USB but old key USB flash
