PCI-E cards 2 verses 3 PCI-E RAID

Hello

I think buy one of the current areca 1880 6GBS sas cards Raid, they are as you know PCI-E 2.

As far as I can make out they use 8 channels, so there is no advantage in using a connector 16 tracks in my MB. (I think)

If they use fully all the bandwidth current PCI-E 2, so it doesn't matter how much forward to the Areca out later this year their 3 PCI-E?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

All the best... Gary

PCIe 3.0 cards are not expected before Q1/2012 and perhaps even Q2. They will receive more recent chipsets in Q4 of 2011 at the earliest, so do your math.

The series of 1880 is indeed 8 x, but you can use a slot 16 x which will then run in mode 8 x.

    Hello

I set up a RAID 500 PCI-E card in my RD450. What I don't understand is when I run SATA cables. What I need to win one of the two running on the rear plate behind the HARD drive bays? Control 4 players each existing cable? So, if I plug the card up to a, it will control 4, and the edge of control 4? Or should I run two cables from the backplate to the two ports on the RAID card?

According to the guidelines of page 38:

    https://download.Lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/PC/pccbbs/ThinkServers/rd450_ug_hmm_en.PDF

You need to detach the cables going to the 3 and 5 on the system board connectors and hang it in your raid adapter. I believe that the raid 500 has two ports marked 0-3 and 4-7, so make sure that you cable them accordingly.

  • Physical Adaptec RAID PCIe passthrough - no longer appears 2 to on guest VM

I'm having a problem with a virtual computer which I just can't 10.9 TB of RAW storage to be seen in the guest.

    Here is the environment:

    -ESXi 5.1 - later

-Adaptec 5805 PCIe (passthrough to vm)

-Windows 7 Ultimate x 64 is the virtual machine.

I have an existing VM (Win7 Ult x 64) that I added in the physical (coming as passthrough) Adaptec RAID PCI device. I had created an array of RAID 6 (in the RAID BIOS) of the 8 x 2 TB drives that shows TB total 10.9. I'm moving this across as RDM physical to the virtual machine.

The adaptec card driver load on the client (I've tried both the pilot Windows and load the driver Adaptec with the same result), but I do not see my RAW disk in Windows disk management. So if I load the Adaptec Storage Manager for Windows, blow to remove the matrix RAID 6 there and try to create another RAID 6 array, create it but she sized down there (only allows the maximum size of) to 2 TB, so I then a RAID 6 array with separate 8 x 2 TB drives that are 2 TB RAW size each.

It will then appear as 2 TB RAW in disk management. So it seems to me that the BIOS of the VMware customer is limit, or something else in the operating system restricted it to adjust the size of the large disks. I can also set up 8 separate JBOD disks and they all appear fine in disk management as GROSS of 8 x 2 TB drives.

So I'm at a loss here on why it does not work, because it must support up to size 64 to I think (as seen in the Guide of ESXi 5.1 Configuration Maximums). This virtual machine has also 2 other VMDK, one for the OS and the other for a virtual disk of 1 TB, which shouldn't have anything to do with storage PCI RAID card I'm passing. Is the operating system must be installed on the drive VMFS5 to be able to address the large space on a separate PCIe RAID passthrough disk?

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get the VM guest to see all the 10 GB of RAW space? Also BTW, this isn't a boot disc, only going to be for storage.

Just to give you a resolution on this issue of old...

It turns out that the Adaptec card was the problem.

Later, I put in a 8480E (same Perc5e card) LSI and this enabled VM see more than 2 TB.

Apparently these cards 8480E LSI may have problems with the help of PCI passthrough, so I wasn't even that, but what I got to do is to create a manual pRDM map using the following command:

    vmkfstools z - /vmfs/devices/disks/vml.0200000000600605b0004cca3019df2cd6bfe575604d6567615241 /vmfs/volumes/524889b9-136860f6-690b-000423dd1e8e/Win7-Ultimate/rdm1.vmdk - a free

.. and then simply add a disc on this virtual Windows machine, accessing the location of the map rdm1.vmdk file, and it worked. When I started the Windows box he is able to see all the 11 TB of storage now.

So the strange thing is that with the old card Adaptec ESXi saw the space, but I continued to get an error when you try to create the manual card via the CLI:

"Unable to create the virtual disk: invalid argument (1441801).

Then after the installation of the 8480E TA I had this error and was able to successfully create the map. And why it was necessary to create the mapping manually via the CLI it is because option in the Add Wizard disk VSC for RDM has dimmed since the PCI SAS RAID cards are considered 'local storage' from ESX allows only iSCSI or FC storage for storage RDM, but will allow CLI you create manually map that worked.

In any case, the issue is resolved now...

  • R720 can I connect drive sas/sata hard without controller card?

I have a r720 without raid card.  When I plug a ssd or disc of 15 k / 10 k sas on the hotswap backplane, chassis recognizes the drive is connected (I get an orange light and lcd to alert that the disc is removed when I go out).  However, the bios and the operating system does not recognize any disks hotswap (they see only the optical drive connected to the ports on the motherboard sata.

Do I need a controller card to use drives connected on the backplane, or is it possible to use backplane without controller card?  I didn't need raid functionality.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Shane

    ntshane
Do I need a controller card to use drives connected on the backplane, or is it possible to use backplane without controller card?  I didn't need raid functionality.

Yes, you must have a controller connected to the bottom of basket. If you have purchased the system without a RAID controller should have a SAS cable that goes from the backplane to the slot of controller S110 chipset on the system board.

You can use the S110 SATA controller on board for communication with backplane. Well, there are limits to the S110 controller, so may not suit your needs. You can probably buy LSI 9207 if you want readers to run in a non-RAID. The other options are a H710 PERC; which you can set the readers to the single drive RAID 0 s. In this State, they function as drives no RAID. You can also get a H310. The H310 supports the RAID mode, but we have added a few features to the H310 who do not find in previous versions of the card. In doing so, it reduced performance when operating in a mode non-RAID.

The reason why I say that you'll probably want another controller than the S110 is because you mentioned that you have SAS disks. The S110 is a single SATA controller. In addition, the S110 is supported up to 4 discs.

To access the BIOS RAID make sure the S110 is turned on in THE system BIOS. In the BIOS, go to SATA settings. In the menu choose the RAID mode. It will turn on the S110 controller. You can configure the drives in the BIOS S110 when booting with the CTL R. I do not know what operating system, you perform the installation, but the S110 is compatible with Windows.

    10.7.4 OS

    CS6.0.1.31

So I've dealt with this problem since I downloaded and started using the Kona 3 with PPCS6.0.1 drivers

Often when I start my computer after it turned off the day before and restart the Prime Minister in the same project that I left that worked very well.  I'm broken audio playback mode.  When I check my audio computer system to preferences they mysteriously turned on in Kona, which is what causes the problem.

I try to change their return to the line output line, preferneces and close then reopen and that the switch did not and they are back to Kona.

I repair permissions and restart and make the change again... sometimes when I do this I get a kernel panic, so need to stop and start again.  Someties it will fix the problem today, sometimes not.  Today, after the kernel panic, everything seems to work properly.

It's a bit boring and a 15 to 20 minutes exercise every morning.  Of course, I could leave my machine all night, but I'd sure appreciate all the ideas on how to fix this ongoing issue.

I've turned into a bug report today, because I think that it is indeed a bug somewhere.

    THX... Jim Watt

I found a post in the apple forum that solved this problem...

If you have problems with your sound 'exit by default' in Snow Leopard, try the following...

Go to your hard drive (root level) and open the library folder. Open the Preferences folder, and then open the Audio folder.

Remove the two preference files in the Audio file:

    -com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist

    -com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist

Restart your mac, and I hope that your problems will be solved.

This solution worked for me, and I hope that it will be too much for you.

  • Z400: Z400 spare parts upgrades

    Hi all

I have a Z400 (saved to unset however) which works very well... Installed Win10 and voila! New PC.

SAS drives of 3 x 300 GB connected to the card from LSI

    475w PSU

SAS hard drives are noisy and slow (at 15 k RPM?)... First thing I did was to buy a Samsung 500 GB SSD Evo 850 (first day on Amazon with a $30 discount!) I checked and with the new BiOS installed (3.60) I confirmed that I have AHCI support so I hope the new SSD will bring me a big change even if only executed at sata2 instead of speed sata3... When the player is here I intend to remove the card raid and sas drives and install an extra sata 2 TB for storing drive instead... Also to get a pci-e sata3 card. Don't you think that it is worth more just go straight to the motherboard? I also read that start from a pci-e card slows down startup vs runnig just drive directly on the port sata motherboard, although running speed is slower. What you think. ?

Next thing I look at is the processor. Thought of the w3680 or w3690... According to the price to get the ram at 1333 Mhz.

Any other suggestions of CPU? Maybe the other supported that are not specified in the quick form.

the current cpu cooler is rated for cpu 130w, so I think I should be fine... .unless you have a suggestion for a better option.

I'm worried about the cpu power draw. Although I will eliminate 3 forts and power.hungry sas drives, I wonder if the current power supply will be sufficient for this and, possibly, a new graphics card. Maybe the new RX480 from AMD?  What do you think of it.

    ?.

Your W3505 is already a 130W processor, so you have the fan Performance.  Moving around with either the W3680 (Search eBay for SLBV2 and you'll find some now to 93,50 dollars).  Or, if you want to spend 3.33 to 3.46 GHz speed spend the extra and get the W3690 for about 145.00 off eBay.  It's a psychological thing... you will not be able to make a difference in the real world, and all of the other major features are identical.

The ultimate would be X 5690, which has a code unique sSpec SLBVX and used eBay now goes for about USD 245.00.  I got mine recently carefully shopping for 220,00, but revision 1 Z400 cost me only 100,00 more shipping charges.  I needed to do this test...

I posted here about adding a map USB3.0 HP Texas Instruments... You have the SSD... Gen II Gen III vs is not really a problem... take to plug that directly into the SATA port 0 of the motherboard.  Empty all SAS.

I posted here on how to remove your spectacular startup time... reading about it.  The forum search box above to find these things.

I added fan Northbridge 40x40x20mm, HP 4-wire version, a card mother xw6600.  Mine is screwed to the top the normal silver Northbridge heatsink fins, and there are several ways to reach that.  The fan blows away from the motherboard drawing cooler air through the radiator at the bottom.  The same fan is used on the Z600 Northbridge.  There is a standard white PWM header of motherboard close to spare, and I added a 4-wire Noctua online LNA that he abandoned his speed (which I do for fans of HP Northbridge).  Which adds to the overall length and connect the fan reach the motherboard header.  The RPM speeds now appear in the temp/RPM section of the Z400 BIOS as a memory cooling fan.  So, the original header seems to have been designed for a cooler of memory, but it is perfect for the Northbridge cooling.  One of these 2 processors speeds would stimulate the heat on the Northbridge and it was my solution (but probably is not really necessary).  I don't know if HP has never made a similar for some high-end Z400s, but seeing things fan used on the xw6600 and Z600 inspired me to add that, for this Z400.  You can get the fans with the correct HP wiring looking on eBay and China where they were all made.  It is precisely the Delta EFB0412HD-7R49 and this amendment at the end refers to the controlled PWM HP 4-wire version.

You want all locations of memory 6 filled by identical 2 or 4 sticks GB, with speeds of memory at 1333 to get the best out of engineering memory HP and the fact that they will be able to run at this speed with these processors.

The 6 HP PCIe supplementary power wire cable provides much more energy than the standard ATX 75W max... I do not a problem here for your video card needs, within reasonable limits.  Your use of the net power will be down and not upward, probably.

  • RAID - 1 with 10.11.3 No longer editing

    Hello

I created a Raid 1 with two drives of 6 TB using the disk through the Terminal commands. Everything worked well.  I've just updated to 10.11.3 and now the reader rises at all.  I looked in the disk utility, and he could not see. I ran the diskutil list command in the terminal and she also could not see the disks.

Any idea what would cause this?

My system disk is also a Raid created with disk... utility and it works fine. It is built with two ssds on a PCIe Sonnet Raid 0 card.

I have a Time Machine backup of the system drive. Should I restore to before the update to fix the problem? If all goes well, there must be a solution. I can't have to 6 worth of material disappearing every time that comes out an update.

    Thank you!

Well, then the drive is showing now.

I realized that a reboot was not enough to completely turn off readers and then turn again.

When I tried to restart the other night, it still does not show upward. I tried to reboot in safe mode and it didn't work either. I turned my computer off... went to work... came home and it was fine.

My graphics card has a reboot that requires a reboot. When it restarted the car was missing again. I stopped and started place... and the car was back.

    Weird... but solved.

  • OptiPlex 7020 and RAID array

    Greetings.

I bought an Optiplex 7020 and controller card SATA referenced in this post after you speak with a representative and come far from believing the 7020 and the SATA controller card combination would allow me to set up a RAID 1 array. I bought both the 7020 and the controller Dell card.

However, after several conversations with the Dell and Technical Support Technical Support Startech, I'm still not able to get this working. I am able to enter in the configuration menu of controller card at startup in addition to being able to access the system BIOS. The BIOS shows 'Mass Storage' assigned to the PCI Express slot (as it should), but complains without hard drive being found when I try to start.

Just for clarity: I'm not trying to use a built-in RAID configuration and try instead to use a controller card to take care of the RAID array. So I am (perhaps erroneous) belief that the 'RAID ON' in the BIOS setting is unimportant because the controller card takes care of the RAID array. BTW: My BIOS is not a parameter "RAID ON". I say just that to prevent an answering machine to take me on the way to the RAID configuration integrated. The 7020 does not come with built-in RAID.

In fact, this Dell page said I need to "buy additional hardware", which is exactly what I did when I bought the controller card - or at least I thought.

So the questions are: what should I do to be able to get my Optiplex 7020 to mirror the first drive on a second so that the second is bootable immediately in case one breaks down?  Do I need a software solution instead? Do I need extra hardware yet?

    Thanks in advance!

If this card requires a driver, so it is probably not responsible until Windows loads BIOS will not be able to see the drives connected on this card to boot from one of them.

And according to the Manual, the startup options are:

To specify the order in which the computer attempts to find an operating system. The options are:

    1. Floppy drive
    2. WDC WD2500AAKX-75U6AA0
    3. USB storage device
    4. CD/DVD/CD-RW drive
    5. Integrated NETWORK interface

Therefore, there is no option to say BIOS to get a boot on PCI - e drive.

That said, it is made reference to the Intel RAID controller in the manual, which suggests it could work with this system.

Win 8/8.1 and win 10, there is a built-in utility called "storage space" to create a mirror. Two drives must be connected to the SATA ports on the motherboard and probably identical in size. So give that a try...

  • Issue whith EXSi 4.1 installation

    Hello

I have problems installing EXSi 4.1 on an Asus P5Q - E motherboard.

The configuration is: a Sata CD and a Sata HDD not formatted, both on the controller Intel ICH10 Sata ports.

CD starting it until the screen validation 'Type F11 to install' and just after tapping F11, the shutdown of the PC, a black screen with tracing appears.

Last info is 'vmkctl. "HostCtlException: could not load module/usr/lib/VMware/vkmod/vmfs3: failed"

I tried several times by different storage configuration of the BIOS (IDE, SATA AHCI) with the same result.

    So...

Maybe this question related to access HARD drive, even if Intel ICH10 is reported to be taken in charge?

In this case, the installation using a SATA PCI-E card (and also to access the RAID configuration) might work?

    Thank you very much.

Explanaition given by asatorian seems to be right: ICH10 supported but impossible installation on native SATA drives.

Many cases, ICH series 'works' If you change mode in the BIOS.  (for example: try "Legacy IDE" instead of AHCI or RAID.)  You will not get RAID, just readers.  (ESX only supports hardware RAID and non RAID software, which is what ICH is.)

... Does this mean he could work with a SATA drive, attached to a SATA/RAID controller card supported?

Perhaps, but as already suggested, it is very probably do not have a supported network card.  ESX is very picky about what NIC and HD controller.

That I found in this thread not supported motherboards that worked well with ESXi4.0, had problems with the installer for ESXi4.1.  Therefore, if you use your model of motherboard as you google somewhere that it worked with ESX, it could very well NOT work now with ESXi4.1 you can try what I did in this thread by installing on another system, and then moving the hard disk or USB on the motherboard.  Or install 4.0 and then upgrade to 4.1. But no guarantee.

  • on the plateau and in the following RAID all-in-one?

I was very pleased with the recommendations for a simple storage solution, good market/mid-range, I use both on the Board and in my editing room.  I read all of your tips, but I'm not always fully in the discussions.

I capture and edit about 8 TB of 4 k R3D footage.   I would like to get to 10 or 12 TB of storage, so we may never fill up to more than 90%, including audio.  I'd be interested to hear the RAID 3, 5, or 6 solutions - anything from a box with cable unique e-Sata for installation of a controller.

It would be great if it was relatively easy to set up, transport and rebuild if a drive has failed.  Ideally, I want her to be on the set with a portable non-edition.  We would take the cardboard RED of the camera and then transfer files from the RED card through the laptop on the RAID via maybe e-Sata, USB or firewire if the laptop has e-Sata.  Then, I would like to modify several months using the same RAID with my workstation.

Above all, it will be simple straight cuts in first with 1 or 3 layers of effects, but at the end we probably want to use AfterEffects for VFX and color correction is within Adobe, or most likely through export of DPX files.

    My workstation is running CS5 on Windows 7 Professional 64 - bit with a card mother X58A-UD3R, i7 930, 12 GB of RAM and a GTX 470.

    Thank you!

You will get only the 230 MB/s, if you get one of the higher end E-Sata cards that are normally $ 250 to $ 350 depending on the manufacturer. BTW that still will not work with your laptop. You will need a controller to E-Sata express card with multiplexing support to use this E-sata Bay with her likely anyway. As I said more to edge E-sata ports do not support multiplexing which is necessary to connect a multi-baies like that via 1 E-sata port.

I did see an option to express for a before SAS controller card, so I would say no to your SAS issue laptop.

A: most 7200 RPM HARD disks are now averaging 105 to 114 MB/s

B: as I said 110 MB/s unless you buy the expensive E-Sata controller. Then you might get 230 MB/s

C: it totally depends on your editing style and your workflow in AE edition. 1 to 3 layers will be fine with a 2 disk 0 raid if that's all you were going to do. The work of EI changes who and how much is dependent on the Publisher. BTW, what means that the E-Sata option with cheaper controller won't be enough. The higher end E-Sata controller will handle ok until the volume becomes over 65% of its capacity. If you want smooth reading then pass the SAS road. The other options will barely get done in many situations where, as the SAS will handle most if not all with this material.

D: no, any sata drive will work. Readers of 10K just read and write faster.

F: 6 Gbps rarely makes a difference on the mechanical drives right now. However, it offers a higher rate on the controllers because of the PCI-E Gen2 that support controllers and plu channel flow. So yes it is important on the controller, but not readers. SSDS change this dependant on the question of whether or not the variable speed drive is optimized for the 6Gbs. Currently SAS or SATA 6Gbs isn't. I don't think that it is still an E-Sata specification.

Well, it's free, so that you could try as well. I expect not much based on the specifications of the card I can pull up. It does not support same raid 6, which is unusual most accept cards really cheap. This means no doubt also the raid configuration utility is not the best but it never hurts to try to see if you want to that unit. You can always get another raid card later if you don't like the management or performance. Do not forget that the raid controller decides how parity is good and reliable verification is. Be sure to keep a backup of the raws if data loss would cost any significant financial loss.

  • RAID 1 storage maximum reaching SAS 6 IR

    Hello support team,

I work with a Dell PE T310 and uses a Windows 7 OS. The controller card is an iR SAS 6, RAID 1 configuration and reach maximum capacity.  I want to add more storage without losing any data.

The configs of the BIOS of the controller is listed below:

    SAS6IR - Bus PCI: 03 / Dev PCI: 00 / PCI Fnc: 00 / FW revision: 0.25.47.90 - IR / status: enabled / Boot Order: 0

    Picture 1 of 1
    Dell virtual disk 1028 identifier
    Type RAID 1 (IM)
    Analysis of order 0
    size 237824
    Optimal situation

NUM / RAID DISK / HOT spare / Drive Status / Pred Fail / Size (MB)

    1 - ATA YES / NO/secondary / NO / 238418
    2 No. ATA / YES / HOT spares / NO / 238418

    1. How can I add more storage without losing any data?

    2. can I use (2 - ATA) drive that is not used in the Raid listed for HOT spare (not seen in disk management) for RAID 0 because the 4 drive Bay is empty at the moment or if it should / could be used for another HARD drive and sets up another RAID 1? which leads to my next question:

    3. 3 drive bays are used, only the drive Bay HARD 4 a mesh metal. Can I add another HARD disk and set up for extra storage?

Yes, if you add a 2 TB drive and configure RAID with the 250 GB drive, then your RAID 1 will not be 250 GB, which means you'll be wasting disk 750Go 3.

In order to use disc 2 for what it IS, you must first cancel the assignment as a hot spare (hot-spare parts are reserved as readers of Eve to the RAID arrays and are not visible to the OS).  No, it can be used as a stand-alone, no RAID disk, or you can configure it in RAID 1 (integrated mirror - IM) with a second disk.

  • RS140 cannot detect HARD drive

    Hello.

I need advice on the LSI to Lenovo RS140 Server raid controller...
Our company have a Lenovo RS140 server with 4 SATA HDD.

When I boot with EasySetup DVD, it does not detect any HARD disk.
But the BIOS detects all the HARD disk properly.

I have updated firmware on the controller BIOS and LSI to the current version of EasyUpdate DVD, but no result...
    How to fix?

    Hello

Since you are using a PCIe SATA RAID controller / SAS configuration setting should be AHCI.

As seen in PIC1, you must go to the LSI WebBIOS to configure the adapter and create your virtual drive. This should allow you to install the OS.

I guess you have the cables connecting the hard drives connected in the adapter 9240 using a mini connector SAS, correct? If you have the drives connected to the system board, the RAID controller will not be able to see them.

  • CPU is very shimmering and erratic, network latency. Server 2003

Something made my crazy server. First of all, it's just the network had a bad latency, then I noticed it was on the server and not on the network.
I thought it as partners of HARD drive, but I'm not sure.
It seems to boost every few seconds for less than a second.
I stopped Hmail and Apache, had neither the question.

    Win Server 2003 SP2

    Dell PowerEdge sc1425
    Xeon 3.4 GHZ (Dual Core)
    2 GB of Ram
RAID 1 (mirror) with 2 x 1 TB hard drives
Mainly used as a file server and the Active directory and the DNS server.
Also runs Apache (very light load) and HMailServer for email.
    There rarely load problems.
The RAID controller shows the raid (and each player) as Optimal.

Any Suggestions where to go from here?

Solved with assistance from majorgeeks. I have 4 Bay external hard drive connected to a pci - x raid controller. One of these berries produced a ton of interruptions. It off and voila.

These new 2.5 SSD PCIe NVMe disks can be used as a startup disk?  too many of them can be put in a raid array?

I'm pretty sure I know the answer both your survey, but I'm unable to find supporting documents internally or externally to confirm. I presented a request for information for verification a few days ago, and I am waiting for that. I expect to have some information at the end of next week.

many of them can be put into a raid array?

I am sure that you can not put in a RAID array using a material or basic RAID controller driver. The SSD PCIe switch routes controller SSD PCIe through the system to the operating system without going through the controller. If non - PCIe SSD are detected in the slot and then readers spend normally by the PERC. Software RAID is the only option for the PCIe SSD RAID.

These new 2.5 SSD PCIe NVMe disks can be used as a startup disk?

It is established that they can be used in the start-up of some systems. This list of systems is not available anywhere that I can find. I guess that this feature is not available in one of the 13g servers that we have released so far. This is probably a feature which is planned to be added with a firmware update for the 13g existing servers, or will be a feature of a 13g server that has not yet been announced.

I'm waiting for details on both of your questions. I'll update when I have more information.

    Thank you
