Physically, move a server blade in a different location - best practices?

Hello

Is there a best practice to move a physical blade to another location?  I can't find a document about it.

We want to move a slide to another location due to keep grouped similar environments but do not want to disassociate the profile.

Can we just unassign, and then take it out and put in another location and let it automatically reactivate.  The profile will remain with the server?

You say - associate profile and then re - associate profile again?

Thank you

A

Hi Adrien,.

Thank you for poining, I guess I wrote too soon.

Yes it takes the decomission.

Here are the steps to update:

(1) shut down the operating system on the blade,

(2) Disassocite the service profile, wait dissociate it in full (check the status on the WSF of the blade tab)

(3) Decomission the blade of the UCSM (check the status on the tab of the WSF for the process)

(4) to remove the blade from the current location,

(5) move the blade into the slot again.

(6) wait for blade to discover fully (even once, check the condition of the WSF of the blade tab), you may be required to validate / recognize the slot to accept the blade and trigger the discovery.

7) once discovered associated with the profile back

(8) start the dos operating system.

I would check the documents and let you know.

Yes.  I find it easier to type text, and then use the move tool (shortcut V) (looks like an arrow) to place it where you want.

To bring up the character and paragraph panels go to WINDOW > CHARACTER or WINDOW > PARAGRAPH.

    I hope this helps.

  • Cannot move the virtual computer to a different location to store data/all

    Hello

I'm physical conversion into virtual machine using the VM converter. When I try this it I get the message error "the file is too big" or something similar. I did some research and realize that my block on the data store size is not large enough. Fine. I know how to format the data store so that it uses a larger block size. However, I need to pass the current VM to another location. I downloaded some of the smallest virtual machine on a local computer, but for most virtual machine I want to plug a USB hard drive in the server VM to move large virtual machine. How can I do this? Is there another way I can move the virtual machine to another location without hassle? I thought to plug a USB hard drive on my local machine and upload it.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you.

I also encountered this problem, and I solved a couple of different ways.

    1. If you have a UNIX server that is running NFS, you can configure a "dropbox" with 777 rights.  Then create a datastore NFS pointing to it, and then use the clone or clone for model option to copy in the NFS data store.

    2. use the product only settlement converter and convert them in one place.  Wipe the data store, reformat with the largest block size and then convert them back.

    Both works perfectly.

Although by default, the taskbar is displayed on the bottom of the screen,
It can be on any of the sides on what you prefer. To move any
side to side, simply click an unused portion and drag
where you want it. Don't forget to click inside it, not on the edge.
by clicking on the edge and dragging will resize not move.

If it does not move, it can be locked. In this case, right click on it
and uncheck "Lock the taskbar", then try again.

Moreover, with the screen monitors wide today, I prefer the taskbar
on the left or the right of the screen. I think that allows a better
use of real estate than have it at the bottom of screen.

  • A listener by server or a listener instance?  What is the best practice?

I joined a company owner and new oracle DBA uses a listener and a port (by default) by server.  We have 7 instances of oracle on a server database using the same listener.  I always created a new listener. / netca or make entries manually by database instance. / dbca

What is the best practice?  My argument for the creation of a separate listener is to be able to restrict connections and accelerator by database using the parameters and the params of the listener.  With a listener, it seems impossible to use several listener settings or settings since all the dB to use it only a listener.  Also if the listener does not have any new connection for all the dB to use it on the server.

    What is the best practice?

The best practice is what works best for you in your particular environment

Personally I have found don't have much need to adjust the configuration of the listener for each separate instance so in my environment of each server has 1 single earphone that is shared by several bodies. I can see your points about the benefits of having separated from listeners, but also additional administration required for the best answer is the one that is right for you. Some of the servers I maintain may have up to 20 instances (development) so having 20 listeners is probably a little more work I want keep.

  • IP address of server blades management

    Hello

Could someone please help me know which path is followed to reach the ip addresses of the server blade chassis management? To be more precise, to say that I have the management interfaces of interconnections connected to the switch network management of my fabric. When I ping addresses it ip of the blades, that ping through the management interface of the FIs management? Can I assign different subnet IP subnet Management Server as the FI management interfaces?

Also, could someone share a document illustrating this architecture?

    Thank you

    Quesnel

    Hi Quesnel

Let's be very clear: IP address management blade = IP address of the MMIC, you can for example. access by the KVM.

    There are 2 modes:

    - out of band which is accessible on port 1 G of the interconnection of fabric management

    - in the band which is accessible via a fabric interconnect 10 G uplink interface

    See the discussion in

    https://supportforums.Cisco.com/discussion/12185011/management-blades-OU...

    Management in-band MMIC

A determinant to provide access management in-band for integrated management Cisco (CIMC) controller is the desire to separate traffic treated tenant provider cloud for service provider deployments shared, public or private. Out of band (OOB) management traffic is at the fabric of interconnections and cross management via the management port. This has the potential to cause bottlenecks and affect the bandwidth of the processor in the management ports.

In-band management allows MMIC traffic to take the same path as the data traffic into and out of the fabric of interconnections via the uplink ports. The highest bandwidth available to the uplink ports means that inband access greatly accelerates the management traffic and reduced risk of bottlenecks and the stress of CPU. When out of band (OOB) and inband address pools can be configured for access to the administration in Cisco's UCS Manager. Out-of-band access only supports IPv4 addresses. Access inband supports IPv4 addresses and IPv6, which allows a management single or double stack.

The two addresses of OOB management interface that can be configured in Cisco UCS Manager blade and rack servers are:

    • An OOB IPv4 address assigned to the physical server via the pool global ext-mgmt
    • An address IPv4 OOB derived from a service associated with the physical server profile

In addition, up to four inband management interface addresses can be configured:

    • A tape attributed to the physical server IPv4 address
    • An IPv4 address of inband derived from a service associated with the physical server profile
    • An IPv6 address band attributed to the physical server
    • An IPv6 address of inband derived from a service associated with the physical server profile

Several in-band for each server management IP addresses take additional sessions of CIMC. When you configure the OOB, and strip addresses, users can choose from a list of these addresses in the KVM Console dialog box when they launch KVM from a server, SSH to the ground, a service profile, the KVM Launch Manager or Cisco UCS Manager GUI web URL.

MMIC inband access supports the following services:

    • KVM console

    • SSH to MMIC for soil

    • vMedia of ISO, virtual CD/DVD, removable disk, floppy drive

    Note

Only Cisco UCS M3 and M4 servers support access in-band MMIC. Access Inband MMIC for Cisco UCS M1 and M2 servers is not supported.

  • Move a virtual machine to a different nic

I have a host who has four NICs.  I want to separate the traffic from a virtual machine to a specific network card that is not in use now. Currently, the host has configured two vswitches. He can see the four NICs and only two have been associated with the two vswitches.

I was thinking about adding a third switch and adding the new network adapter.  Can I add the nic to the swith and just move the server itself?

Thanks in advance for the help,

    Edsel

Still not sure if I understand you correctly. What you need to migrate the virtual computer to another vSwitch is:

    • create a new vSwitch with a Virtual Machine port group
    • assign an unused uplink (vmnic) to this vSwitch and connect it to a physical switch
    • Open the settings of the virtual machine and change the port in the network settings
    • change the configuration OF the virtual machine if necessary

  • Physically move the ESX servers

    Hello world

This is a really stupid question, but I hope someone can give me the answer. We have 3 x ESX 3.5 servers and a center of physical vitual server I want to move from one data center to another. We HA activated, and when I put one of the servers into Maintenance mode the virtual machines automatically migrate to the other boxes which is fine. I guess if I stop all VMs, ESX servers can be entered in maintenance mode and the engine off the virtual computer will remain on the server.

If I stop all servers and the virtual Center Server and then turn off the SAN, also are the files of the virtual machine etc. safe on the SAN. My worst fears would be to power everything up and find that I've lost the virtual machine. ;-(

    Thank you

The reason your virtual machines to migrate to other ESX hosts in the cluster when you enter the Maintenance Mode is actually not HA and DRS.  If you configure the DRS in manual mode or disable it just completely you should see is no longer this behavior.

You should just turn off all your virtual machines manually (or using a tool to help automate as PowerCLI) and then go into Maintenance Mode on each of your guests.  Then, you will be able to stop with all the virtual machines that are currently assigned to them, if that is your goal.  From there as much as you ship your SAN and servers correctly it shouldn't be a problem power everything backup.  This assumes that the network portion of the House is in order and that you do not need re - IP all your ESX/VMs hosts once they are placed in the new data center.  If yes then obviously it is going to be a little more complicated.

There are always risks when you physically move servers and the San from one place to the other.  It goes without saying, but try to make sure that you have some kind of environmental protection should there be a major problem.  Things like getting into a car accident or dropping the SAN on ground down as the stairs actually occur then you should try to get a full backup to protect yourself if possible.

  • Reference Dell R310 Server Blade not start CD ROM [FRESH WINDOWS SETUP]

    Hello

I have a Server Blade Dell R310. I created the virtual disk on a Raid Configuration, also I updated the BIOS boot.

I PERC S100 when I checked on my configuration tab.

The scenario is that I want to install a new / new copy of Windows 2008 R2 on this server, I have the dvd bootable. but when I put it on the drive it says "No Bootable Media found" something like that.

Y at - it all the configurations that I missed? hoping to get answers from here.

    Kind regards!

OK, let's back up a bit:

Use the management tools of systems and Documentation (GDPS) instead of SBUU.  If you use SBUU with 2008R2, you should use the Driver Pack too... MUCH easier to use the GDPS, which has everything you need in there:

FTP (you will need to copy/paste - forums do not like the FTP links):

    FTP://FTP.Dell.com/secure/FOLDER01538030M/1/OM_SMTD_730_A00.ISO

Yes, you start on GDPS, follow the instructions, and then insert the 2008R2 media when prompted.

  • Server Blade ASYNC / threshold of passage / hardware verification

    Hey people,

strange things occur yesterday evening. I bypassed about 120 messages "threshold crossed: CAW: etherTxStats...» "and"IO Module Warning.

I looked in the events of UCSM. Each server blade in our UCS started a WSF. What is a routine of UCS? We do not know what is happening. All the 32 ESXi 5.5 blade server. It has not changed anything.

Events of WSF see attached file. I have filtered all the events of 'jumps '. To me, it seems that MMIC began the new inventory for all servers? Do you know something about this or have the same events? Is there a scheduled task internal UCS?

UCS version 2.2 (3f) (all systems = same beam of firmware; UCSM, FIs, blades...)

    Thank you very much

It would be interesting to have a look at the audit logs around that time and DME (data base management Enginer) to see what is really happening... You better open a case of TAC and then post the result here for future users faced with the same question it will require a deep investigation of the newspapers before we a tell you what/why he happeed.

  • Virtualization of a physical Windows 2003 Server Standard live by Ethernet

I intend to virtualize a Windows Server 2003 server standard of Ethernet based field.

I am currently using the VMware Workstation 10.0.1 and I noticed/hear about the possibility of using "Virtualize a physical machine" to create a testmachine identical to one of my physical servers to clients.

The physical server is running on a network domain, and it is quite critical.

Can confirm them, it is possible to virtualize a Windows 2003 Server?

Is it not possible to virtualize the server for example, live by Ethernet, without disturbing it?

    Best regards, Reynir

Your physical Windows Server 2003 machine is a domain controller or a member server standalone field?

If your server is not a domain controller, you can do a P2V from this machine without stops services, but there are always recommend stop all non Microsoft and no VMware services before starting the conversion, just to be course, there is any alteration of the data and other services like antivirus train killing the process of converter.

For P2V recommended, please visit: KB VMware: best practices for using and troubleshooting VMware Converter

  • Move the server vCenter as virtual machine

    Hello

I was asked to spend 5.1 vCenter virtual from one cluster to another. I guess that would not big problem, but there is a situation.

vCenter server 5.1 is sitting on one of the hosts in Group A here is the IBM hosts with AMD processors. I have to move to group B which has HP hosts and Intel processor. This means that I have to close vCenter server to move, but at this stage I am lose the connection to the vCenter server.

How to move this server to another cluster. vSphere client is out of the question, but also web interface. I guess that some sort of command line should work, but I don't know how

    All ideas

    Thank you very much

In this situation, there are several options.   All of them require vcenter would fall at some point.

1 use of vsphere replication to replicate the vm and then stop and start

    2. use converted for vcenter convert and more (you need to turn off the virtual machine to get a clean snap)

3 use SCP from one host to another

4 vmotion the VMS to shared storage that can see the two hosts, turn it off remove inventory in one add B and power on

I don't know there are methods more I do 4 If you can.

    Thank you

  • Convert a physical box 2003 Server vm and the VM is extremely slow. Trying to connect again...

Convert a physical box 2003 Server vm and the VM is extremely slow. Trying to connect again...

This is my first time converting a physical box to virtual. This is Server 2003. The conversion took place and I try to connect to the box now but it's so slow. Currently, he sat to apply personal settings for almost 10 minutes.

My boss has converted physical to virtual several times before and never said that he ran into something like this.

Am I missing something? Any suggestions?

I think that it is always looking for active directory. the newly P2V'ed will operate all IP settings. Therefore, you will need to wait until it has expired, and then enter the IP that is (ip, dns and etc.) above. the other way to speed things up would be to disconnect your network and the thing that your OS to expired immediately.

  • Restore the backup with a new name and a different location on the same server

    Hi all

I did a complete backup of my current PROD. Is it possible to restore the database on the same server, but with a different instance name, db_name and on another location?

    PRM says:
    Hi all

I did a complete backup of my current PROD. Is it possible to restore the database on the same server, but with a different instance name, db_name and on another location?

If you use RMAN my awnser is not.

You cannot change the name of the database before open resetlog.

But you can make this work without problem using the same server.

You will need to change some parameters.

Create a PFILE from SPFILE (prod) change parameter 'db_unique_name' file new name (ex TEST).

Change all the value of PROD TEST except db_name parameter must be PROD.

CREATE a SPFILE from this PFILE (spfileTEST.ora)
Create a new password file (orapwTEST)

So you can start this new Instance_name (TEST).

Restore the PROD to TEST instance database, you will need use set new name to the file data or database (depends on which version you use)

Retrieve the instance PROD database (TEST)

It is time to open resetlogs...
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ATTENTION HERE!

You need change redo log location before open resetlogs, you must query v$ logfile member column and change it to another location.

After change you can open resetlog.

Now its time to change name of database.

    Stop and start Mount

    Use the NEST

    NEST target=sys/password@instance DBNAME = TEST

When this process is complete, NEST will be closing database.

So you will need to start with nmount change db_name to the TEST and reset the parameter 'db_unique_name' (alter system reset db_unique_name)

Then stop and start upstairs question OPEN DATABASE RESETLOGS and is done.

  • How to move a virtual machine to a different data store, preserving its ID

I would like to move a virtual machine to a different data store.

Because I use 3rd party software that identifies a virtual machine by its ID of VirtualCenter, I'd like to preserve the ID, and I also want to preserve the name of the virtual computer.

If I clone the virtual machine, I lose the ID and name.

I can clone a second time to restore the name, but the ID is always false.

I know that I can use vmkfstools-i to copy the entire disk.

Is it possible to copy the entire VM?

    I am currently on ESX 3.0.2/VC 2.0.2

The operation that I describe is available in 3.5.x/VC ESX 2.5.x

    TIA,

    -Magister

Don't use EVER of CP to copy a VM, VMDK move/copy should be used in conjunction with vmkfstools as best practice.

    OP,

You can manually make a copy using the CLI interface or use the VI Client and browse the data store and to copy and paste in the appropriate data and as suggested Andre store, when you switch on for the first time, you should say 'keep' when asked if you want to update the virtual machine UUID.

Another thing, you could do, is if you've enabled for vMotion, you can actually use Storage vMotion which will migrate directly from your virtual machine to a different data store, it's less effort on your side and you can count on Andrew Kutz sVMotion plugin: http://sourceforge.net/projects/vip-svmotion/
