• Windows XP crashes intermittently when stopping. Stuck on the screen with the default windows background color and the mouse pointer.

  I'm not an expert on controls, but here is my suggestion based on your description: when you register an event handler on a node of "substance", it is called only when the mouse points to the context node - I assume that light gray is the transparent and gray with light gray cells background dark cells to fill.
