Portege M300 - is updated as possible DVD RW?

I just bought a second hand Portege M300 with integrated CD RW unit. I was wondering if anyone has upgraded to DVD RW and what models might adapt / work. I read somewhere (but I can't find him!) that there is a 'block' on different disks being installed (i.e. the machine does not recognize the new drive if not factory equipped). Is this true or a cyber-myth?

I requested technical assistance in this matter, but they don't seem to have a useful answer...

Can I replace my CD - RW drive with an internal DVD RW drive?

I know I could buy an external hard drive relatively cheaply on Ebay, but I prefer an intern, I carry with me the kind of thing!

Thanks in advance.
Chris

  • Cannot read DVD on flea market Portege M300

    Hello.

I wonder if someone can help me. I bought an flea market portege M300 and it's fine - however I could not create recovery discs that the option was not on the section Protect and Fix on Toshiba Assist.
Now, I can't read the DVD.

I guess that sort of resettlement was made but not with the toshiba recovery discs and so I can see I can play DVD CD or burn CDs. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I should do. Toshiba send me a recovery disc for the machine and so I was wondering if they would be on these discs and if I should wait until they arrive.

    Thank you, best regards,.

    Hello

Does the drive support the function of burning?

You can try to enter in the properties of the drive and select the recording tab.
The option activate write to this drive must be marked.

On the Toshiba Recovery CD, you will find an image with preinstalled operating system and all the Toshiba drivers needed and utility.
If you want to watch DVDs if you need special software such as WinDVD or PowerDVD.
These are applications of DVD player. I guess the WinDVD must be preinstalled on the image.
To burn a CD s, you are also burning software. I advise to use a Nero.
For me this is one of the best burning applications.

You should try using different media. You should know that not all media are compatible and supported.

You bought this laptop as a second hand unit, so it is possible that the drive is bad. Sometimes, if the drive cannot burn or read some of the media due to the error of calibration of lens. In this case there are not a lot to do to replace the drive.

  • Portege M300 - update Bios without battery

    Hello

Currently, I am trying to fix a problem that I have with my laptop (Portege M300) of the battery.
I have been informed that the bios update should solve this problem, but when I try to update I get error "the AC adapter is not connected, or battery power is not sufficient.

Now, the power adapter is connected and works well, but the battery is on 4% of costs...
This is the exact reason, I'm updating the bios!

Does anyone know how I'm supposed to solve this problem?

    Thanks in advance,
    Chris H

    Hello

I m not very good if the update of the BIOS might help you what it s a battery problem
Have you noticed this problem on the first day of purchase?
I mean if this issue was not present the same using BIOS in the past, then it wouldn't be a matter of BIOS but material, possibly a battery

I think that the battery needs to be checked.

  • Is it possible to upgrade RAM in Portege M300

Is it possible to increase the RAM in Portege M300 laptop?

    Hello

    Yes, it is possible.

Especially this oldie came with 512 MB (2 x 256 MB) of RAM installed.
It should be possible to extend the RAM 1024 MB (2 x 512 MB)

I think that details could be found in the user manual that you can download on the Toshiba page:

  • Portege A100 PPA10A - update the BIOS to boot from a USB device

    Hello

I have an old Portege A100, model: PPA10A-0002LP, but I can't seem to find this model on any Web site of Toshiba, closest I've seen is the "PPA10A - 0002 L'.

I am wanting to know if there is a BIOS update that will allow me to boot from a USB device.

The question I have is that I need to reinstall Windows, but the CD ROm cannot read disks.
This network PXE boot, but I'm new to this sort of thing and have absolutely no idea what to do here.

    Any help would be great,

    Thank you

    Hello

Portege A100 seems to be developed solely for the Australian market.
As you say it is a model number Portege A100 PPA10A - 0002L listed on the Australian page of Toshiba Portege A100 PPA10A-0002LP belongs to the same series which is PPA10A
So in my opinion, the BIOS should work too.

Anyway, I doubt that the BIOS update will add boot options.

Usually the BIOS supports booting from CD/DVD drive, drive HARD, LAN and USB FDD.
It should be possible to boot from a boot disk using a USB FDD drive.
I doubt you'd be able to boot from USB WEIRD since this Portege A100 supports an internal CD/DVD drive.

  • Portege M300: Is the protection of HARD drive only for the brand of Toshiba drives?

    Hello

I am trying to upgrade my Portege M300 with a hard drive bigger, as seen on the Portege forum, I posted the thread after that two hard drives from samsung does not similarly, shortly after the installation of the new.

I just want to know if the protection of Toshiba HARD drive utility is simply made for Toshiba hdd or if it can work on any other brands of hard drives of brand. As I say, I want to upgrade a 60 GB to 160 GB and 2 new hard drive failed. I've since updated my bios to the latest version and I also consider not to install this hard drive protection feature, just in case where it will cause problems once more with my 3rd HDD replacement of same nature.

I appreciate any thoughts on this.
    Thank you very much

    Hello

Usually it s any manufacturer is.
If the HARD disk supports the CHIP so it should be possible to use this HARD drive.
The HARD disk protection tool verifies the parameters of the HARD disk.
But the settings are configured by HDD manufacture then it might be possible that the HARD disk will not work if the tool would not choose the settings correctly.

    Hello

Maybe the internal CD/DVD drive cannot handle the recovery disc
There are several reasons for this issue could be a dirty laser or lens something wrong with the disc of recovery or other reason

You are able to start using other bootable discs like original CD bootable CD in MS Windows or linux?

You could this workaround is short:
Copy the recovery CD (burn on another CD) and then try to start the laptop using the recovery disc copied.

  • Change the drive letter of the drive of CD on Portege M300

    I have a Portege M300, 40 GB, Windows XP.
I have just repartioned my hard drive with Norton Partition Magic.
The result is OK: I have now two drives, the two 20 GB. That one thing is not as I expected. Still, the DVD player, is recognized as D: and the new partition got E: location.

It's just 'a beauty problem', but if I want to spend it, is this possible and how?

  • Portege M300 - Ubuntu, bootmgr error

    Hi guys,.

I hope you can help, I spent 2 days reading similar posts, but nothing seems to work.

I installed Ubuntu on an external hard drive (using my Vista machine). Can I boot Ubuntu from my Vista machine without any problem.

However, I now want to use this hard drive Ubuntu in my new NetBook (for me). (Toshiba, Portege, M300). However when I install my Ubuntu HD in this machine I get the infamous error "bootmgr is missing". I REALLY hate this error now.

So I did my research and give EACH of them thinking that I should use my Vista recovery DVDs for this problem. Why the hell do I need to use a Vista CD when it comes to pure Ubuntu installation?

Can someone give me some ideas? Computers laptop Toshiba require Bootmgr (i.e. an installation of windows?)

    Please PLEASE help,
    Marc

    PS thanks in advance...

You don't need a special boot manager, Linux should start very well after a successful installation.

Did you delete all partitions on the HARD disk before you install Linux?

It seems that the Windows boot sector is still installed.

  • Portege M300 - how to install driver LAN

    Hello

I got a new hard drive put in my Portege M300 and managed to get the drivers all released on except the lan and a modem.
I found the drivers here and make them, but which file do I use to install the application? ...
I have one that says "PRO network driver uninstaller connections" but nothing obvious for amd installation... no files for directions...

    Any help appreciated.

    Thank you

How to install the LAN driver?
It is very easy, you can install it in the Device Manager.

First of all, you need the correct LAN driver.
You can find the Portege M300 on the Toshiba drivers European page driver-> * Archives *.

After the LAN driver has been downloaded, you must unzip this package.
Then go to Device Manager, select the unknown device (NIC) in the network adapters, select install or update the driver and follow the instructions on the screen.

    Hello

When did you reinstall the OS?

Eventually he s question as a BONE I mean it possible s that your OS is confused upward and therefore some functions don't work properly

On the other hand a hardware problem (HARD drive, memory) would be also possible.
But first if would be interesting to know if the laptop would serve after recovering.

  • Recovery disk to a partition on Portege M300

    Hello

I reinstalled my xp win since another cd of xp on portege m300 laptop and does not burn a recovery disk hard of the with windows that provided thoshiba computer, with his comments today that you burn your own backup instead of they send you an original cd of win xp. I want a cd backup/recovery cd now and I see that they compartmentalized (or what his name) a separate 2, 5 GB hd with the name "HDDRECOVERY".

This resulted in my windows has installed on E: cause it's a 2, 5 GB partioned HDspace C: windows called and I could choose E: to install win xp and I didn't erase the siloed 2, 5 GB of space. I toughed I somehow could access this file of 5 GB HD 2, but it dosen´t show in 'my conputer' in the windows disk management tools not. You can't do anything in this manegmant tool so that it can show in "my computer". I would like to access this area and burn this HDDRecoveryfile so I can get my respective windows that followed when I bought the computer from the win xp serial that is provided under this cumputer did not work with my new cd of win xp.

PS. How to install windows on C: If the installer of windows think that c is the 2, 5 GB partioned file? I don't want to delete it.

    Hello Andrew

The situation with the Portege M300 is a bit complicated, but I'll try to explain. Portege M300 (I believe only in Germany) is delivered without Recovery DVD and also Tools & Utilities CD. The two of them can be created by the user, but only if the appliance is preinstalled at the factory. The unit of the factory preinstalled with original image contains a tool called Recovery Disc Creator. With this tool, you can create the two media. There is no way to do it without this tool.

Unfortunately this tool you can not find on the Toshiba download page. Because of this, you can keep that partition on the HARD drive but it has no sense at all. You have your own OS preinstalled without Recovery Disc Creator.

    There are two solutions:
    1. you can format entire HARD drive, create clean partitions and install own OS using all things, that you can find on the Toshiba download page.
2 contact authorized please partner in your country. They may try to order the original DVD of recovery for you. If this recovery DVDs is not available the service partner can make factory settings again but with costs.

That s all I know Portege M300 and preinstalled software. If you have any other questions, please write again.

    Good luck!

  • Portege M300 - software included

I recently bought the Toshiba Portege M300. When I opened the box, I noticed that a CD titled extra software that contains the driver DVD-RAM and WinDVD Creator. The rest of the software is on the hard drive. There is no Windows XP CD or recovery CD. It is a normal situation or should I have any extra CD?

    Hello

I agree with Tom. Recovery media is not delivered, and before you do anything with your unit, you must create restore DVD. You will find this option if you start Toshiba Assist tool and switch Protect & Fix tab.

    Good luck!

  • Need for guidance how to create a recovery on Portege M300 CD

Hello. I really want to create a disc of recovery for my Portege M300 and know I have to do it via Toshiba Assist but really need a step by step idiots guide to know exactly what to do. I tried to put a CD to write but it rejects it-if I have to use floppy disks he will not take the charges or have I missed something.

Oh dear - you get the idea that I am a complete numpty and need a guide very clear step by step as to exactly what I need to do. I have had problems in the past and had need of these disks and so hated to do anything on this laptop until I have the appropriate recovery disks.

    Thank you in advance.
    Rachel

I put t know what is the problem.
Go with Toshiba and select the Protect & Fix tab.
You will find the option recovery disk creator

So if you want to recovery and tools & utility CD you must mark.
(When you use the CD it of necessary to use the CD with storage capacity of 80 min 700MB)

After selecting the recovery CD or DVD and product, you simply have to burn the media.

    Only his.
