PowerEdge 2950 Boot

Hi, I'm not a person of material at all, so please be patient with me.

I recently acquired two PowerEdge 2950. Currently, I don't have any operating system installed, and I don't know if two hard disks that came with it are truly functional. I install two hard drives on the server and put under tension. Hard drives blinked once and the indicator remained offshore. I try to enter the raid controller to see if yes or no hard disks are working, or showing upwards, as suggested by my work.

Supposedly should have an option (Ctrl + R) on start up to enter THE RAID controller BIOS, but its lack of my server for reason. I thought that the bio for server was old, therefore, that I have updated to the latest (2.0.7 I think). However, it now shows the option. Then, I thought that maybe the RAID controller is not recolonized by the server, so I unplugged the RAM RAID controller and started the server, but resulted in an error indicating that the RAM is missing.

All of the above are the same in both servers I have.

At the end of the day, I am just installing a server on these servers operating system and now the hard drives are not recognized by the server.

Please help me with this problem.

Thank you

When I plug the RAID controller, the built-in RAID controller option does not appear in the SETUP (F2)

It's normal, but it shows that the controller is at least very little functional. Most of the hardware failures cause a piece dead circuits, but rather of bad operation of the circuits.

If the data is critical, and you don't have a backup, get one now.

NEVER stop a server to introduce a disk. If the reader poster pred fail, force the drive offline first, then remove it. If it is already broken, then just pull it off.

I tried on cold hidden server with boot CD, but received the error "unable to determine the operating system invited."  Looks like that I don't have the driver for the Dell raid controller in the boot CD.

I decided to go with the hot P2V using the plug-in for VirtualCenter.  I stop the SQL server service and disabled the firewall disabled the anti-virus tools.  Only two partitions (C and G) on the physical server must be in the new virtual machine.  So, I've selected partitions C and G and has increased the size of the drive at a time.  I made sure not to install the vmware tools and unchecked the option reconfigures.   The P2V conversion was successful.   But when I went to start the virtual machine, it starts with the 'VMWARE' logo and restarts immediately.  Restart the virtual computer so fast I can't even in the BIOS unless I hit the key several times.   I did the clonning with the hidden partition, but with the same problem.   There are no BSOD or any indication that the virtual machine cannot find the vdisks.   Called in vmware support.  They used webex for an hour, but could not fix.  Asked me to send in the logbundle.

I HERE it if someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

    Thank you

Another option is to install the Standalone Converter 3.0.3 on the PowerEdge, stop all services and performing the conversion.

  • VMware ESXi 4 on Dell PowerEdge 2950 CDROM missing in virtual machines

    Hi all

I installed VMware 4.0 on my Dell PowerEdge 2950, and everything moved very well. I had the ISO image from the support site on the website of VMware and Dell. I installed both with the same problem, once installed, the CD-ROM will not be displayed in any virtual machine, I create.

I changed the boot parameters, the order of the boot, played with the BIOS settings, and no matter what I do, when I start the virtual machine and open a console window and try to connect on the CDROM, a message displays saying that the device is disconnected.

I have reinstalled Windows on the box, went to the site of support of Dell and applied each update BIOS patch and firmware of the box. Including the one for the TEAC CDROM, which is in my box.

Anyone had this problem before? If so, how should I do? I really need this works quickly. Without a CDROM, I can't install software such as SQL Server and others.

    Kind regards

    Michael Lange

I assume that you have added a CDROm for virtual machines?

You then specify "logged in/connected to the power on" in the settings of VM page? (I know it's usually obvious.. .but I did it very mistaken once this week.. .accidentally added the CDROM to the VM wrong.)

What OS your virtual machine is running and you have the installed VMTools?

If issuing a VMtools install on a windows host, it works, then the Cd drive works as ESX uses the virtual CD Rom to install the tools.

  • Cannot add ESX/PowerEdge 2950 hard drive

Hello..  I have a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with a Perc6 / i.  I am currently under VMWare ESX 3.5i using RAID 5.  I added another drive and try to add that, for VMWare.  Looking at the sensors, the UNCONFIGURED GOOD watch drive.  When I try to add through VIC using storage - & gt; Add storage, the disk is not there.  I looked everywhere to try to add this drive but its got the best of me.  What I am doing wrong?

Ideally, I would like to add to the RAID 5 array, but from what I've read is not possible.  Suffice to just be able to add the period dang by car.

    Help!

The boot server and press Ctrl + R and go to group configuration, look at the table manager and add the new virtual disk. Don't try to split the table 5 in place or you may lose your data.

  • II of the PowerEdge 2950 not allowing for space HARD to be accessible

    Nice day

I have an old server PowerEdge 2950 II (card: 2x3.0 Ghz Xeon, 24 MB Mem 1 TB SATA HDD, 1 Tb SATA HDD, 2 TB SATA HDD - Server data center in 2012).

The question I have is that I recently updated the operating system from 2008 to 2012 DC, then installed an extra drive (2 TB).  I run RAID 0, and the system is only show a MAXIMUM of space disk HARD 1.98 TB, with the other Tb 0.02 table allocated to file systems.  RAID Perc 5i controller has all the three marked as online HARD drives.  BUT I can not use the additional 2 tablespoons in the table.  I was going to buy and install a 2nd HARD drive of 2 to SATA and RAID 1 go; but, if I can't fix this storage space not represented in the storage Bay I can't justify the purchase.  If anyone can help I would be grateful.

So, you have three disks - 1 TB, 1 TB, 2 TB - during a RAID 0, and you expect to see 4 TB of space?  If so, see my notes above.  Each virtual disk (RAID array) is presented to the operating system as a separate 'disc'.  Windows cannot use a more 2 TB drive unless it has been converted to GPT.  First of all, the conversion to TPG is data destructive, so you will need to do a backup/restore.  Secondly, convert your boot 'disc' TPG will not cause it to start on a 2950 because it only supports UEFI, which is necessary to start from a GPT disk.

Bottom line?  You need to rethink your configuration on this machine.  You could make two 1 TB disks in a 1 TB RAID 1 for the OS (in MBR and bootable on a 2950), and then you could add 2 TB RAID 1 for data disks.  2 TB, it would be unnecessary to convert to GPT, but if you have added more than 2 TB of space, you would then convert that TPG and use as many TB for the data that you can hold in the system.

In addition, you realize how dangerous running a RAID 0 is, right?

  • PowerEdge 2950 III w / Server2008 64 bit: cannot activate TOE

I recently purchased a PowerEdge 2950 III with standard options, which includes a double NetXtreme II Broadcom nic with TOE capabilities. Due to some communication problems, it was delivered without active TOE and the TOE installed key. I installed Windows Server 2008 64 bit on it.

After some time Dell send me a TOE key, and I off the server and installed it.

In the BIOS, it now says "able TOE." In the Dell OpenManage Server Administrator it said ' able TOE: available 'and' enable TOE: 'Yes. But in the Broadcom Control Suite to unload his abilities he doesn't list that the LSO and CO, PINCH.

    I have tried several things:

-J' ran "netsh interface tcp > set global chimney = on" to activate TOE

    -disabled the Windows Firewall

-remove the Broadcom drivers and reinstall them (the more recent on the Dell site)

    -installed the SNMP functionality

But I can't seem to make it work.

TOE benefits to the whole Server 2008? If so, what am I doing wrong?

  • Flash 8 GB of PowerEdge 2950 memory cards work?

Hi I want to improve my poweredge 2950 (I) memory and I have 2 sticks of fbd DIMM, 8 GB at 667 mhz each. There in all 16 Gb, but I m not sure if he's going to work because, back in the day, there were 4 GB sticks support, perhaps because 8 GB sticks did not exist. The questions are, can this work, does not work at all, to recognize the part of memory. ?

    Thank you

Hi guys just to say what it was. My 2 8 GB sticks well and mixed with the other 6 of 1 GB. Now I have 22 GB correctly recognized by my 2950 I server.

  • PowerEdge 2950-second map PERC to connect to PowerVault 220 s

    Hello

I have a PowerEdge 2950 unit (Service Tag # NOTE from the ADMIN: maintain the label removed by privacy policy >) and PowerVault 220 s unit (Service Tag # NOTE from the ADMIN: maintain the label removed by privacy policy >).
I would like to know is possible to connect this PowerVault 220 s 2950? I'm going to put this 2950 Windows Server 2012.

Initially, this PE2950 came not with additional PERC card. If I want to add in the additional PERC card to connect to PV220s, it is possible to do?

    Hello, jindrax.

So, I'm not saying it's impossible, but it will get difficult. The PV220s works with a PERC 3 or PERC, which is NOT validated on the PE2950 4. The PE2950 is all the time, we started to switch to SAS, if I remember correctly. So it will be difficult at best to find a card to connect the PV220s.

Aside from that, using the PV220s with Windows 2012 isn't a good idea either. While windows may have a driver randomly for him, it will not match the firmware and will act "funky" to say the least.

In this case, honestly you'd be best suited for a large USB drive (4to) and be in a much better position to try to mesh the old technology of today.

  • Looking for documentation PowerEdge 2950 III

The material does not match looking for PowerEdge 2950 III manual/documentation material... the documentation associated with the service tag.  Documentation that seems to be the 2950 base while the material is the version III with the - 7 marked 0 on the front disc.  More useful would be linked to the set, but if not, then at least the hardware manual.

I realize this is an older system... but I need to be able to show what parts I might need to get from Dell to keep it operational.

Sorry if this isn't the right forum to ask.  Thank you.

This is the link to the manuals PE2950 etc.  If there is a different version, I can't find it.

You cannot mix SAS and SATA drives in a RAID array.
