Precision 690 MY171 rev A00 mobo - hearts Xeon 5300 series

Hello

I know that this subject has been discussed in the past, but I am having a hard time finding an answer for my exact situation.  My Dell Precision 690 runs the rev MY171 A00 motherboard on rev A08 bios.  It currently has a single processor dual core Xeon 5150.  I want to upgrade to dual quad core Xeon 5300 series processor.  I've seen youtube videos and discussion with rev A02 MY171 boards that run the 5300 series, but nothing to confirm if the version A00 will run them.

The rev A00 motherboard BIOS A08 MY171 will work two Xeon 5300 series quad core?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Today, I received my processor Xeon X 5355 to four hearts by post and installed in on my MY171 Rev00 on bios A08.  No problem during the performance of the processor.  I took out the battery from the motherboard for 2 minutes before relocation and commissioning for the first time.  BIOS immediately recognized the processor.

I'm running window 10 and initially he saw only 2 carrots.  I went into MSCONFIG and made some changes on the STARTUP, the Advanced Options tab, you should uncheck 'Number of processors' and restart.  After that, the OS will see all 4 cores.

I intend to run identical to the second X 5355 processor, but am waiting to get a second heat sink before a fall.

Hope this helps others seek to upgrade the 690.  The two processors cost me a total of $20 on ebay.  Also got 16 GB RAM DDR2 PC5300 (8X2Go) for this computer for $10.  Computer will work great for $30 worth of improvements.  I still feel like they need SSD to run faster.

I put processors Dual quad X 5300 inside?

    Yes: http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/precn/en/spec_precn_690_en.pdf

What are the chances of getting work Windows 2008? What are the chances of getting work Windows 2012?

Good, but this is not guaranteed. It takes the server processors does not mean that it will support server operating systems. The details have never wanted to be servers - workstations. There is a good chance that you can load a server operating system and have it work perfectly, but there is also a chance that some of the equipment is the only quality work station and don't have drivers that will work correctly.

Will be one of the Socket 771 X53XX Xeons in there?

-What? Adapt? Work? 771 all fit, but not all of the 5300 X may work. See the data sheet above. 5300 X are supported, but not necessarily all of them. The data sheet says "up to" 1300 MHz and 2x4MB / 8MB, which means that if all processors X 5300 exceed these specifications, they may not work (unless the support has been added specifically through the BIOS update).

  • (Redirected) Precision 690 starts

I have 8-9 years old Precision 690 with dual Xeon 3160, dual nVidia Quadra 4500 graphics card, double SCASI Hitachi 150 GB, hard drives searched. Computer worked fine until he ceased to start up.

At the start, it does not show with Bios A 06 Dell logo, as it should.

This does not suggest that the problem is with the motherboard, boot hard drive or maybe the operating system?

    Any suggestion will be appreciate.

    With our thanks.

  • Drive Precision 690 start-up blocking

    Dell Community,

I have a Precision 690, which worked perfectly in an environment Windows 8.1 until my SSD OS died a few weeks ago. I had a Samsung 840 EVO on the set, installed and took the computer home for the weekend to do a clean install window 10 Pro. Surprisingly, given the age of this beast, everything went pretty well.

My a persistent problem is at start-up, where for the post, I see the screen following with SSD listed, no problem:

5 Dell BIOS SAS Host Bus Adapter

    MPTBIOS - 6.06.00.02 (2006.04.05)

    Then in the next screen:

Drive 1 not found: serial ATA, SATA-1

Strike F1 key to continue, F2 to run the Setup utility

And this is where the boot process stops. Yes I can by pressing F1 and the safe indeed continue, but I do a lot of remote computer management and am not always on the keyboard to press the F1 key. BIOS A08, 4 GB ECC RAM, 120 GB SSD, processor Xeon 2.66 onboard with a nVidia Quadro FX4500 nice... at least it was good when I bought it at the time.

If you, my people, I humbly request your entry.

  • Dell Precision 690 workstation several hard drives

I have a Dell Precision 690 and I am trying to connect the hard drives in the right order. The documentation says they must go into the HARD drive marked locations on the motherboard, but they do not work. The only slots that work are the SATA slots. I tested five SATA drives but I can only get three to work on three SATA slots instead of four locations of HARD drive and slot extra SATA as the book said to do.

I tried which helps the controller under the BIOS: has no significance if it is enabled or disabled. I determined that AHCI is unable to be activated, it must be ATA.

In the end, I need to have five total drives. Four in the slots in the HARD drive and the other in the SATA slot. (Which will be for operating system 1 SATA and SAS RAID 4). I realize that the HDD_0, 1, 2, 3 locations are to use SAS/SATA but I can't take too much work.

In addition, I don't ' know if this is important or not, but he has Windows XP Professional x 64. BIOS A05 and I know an update is A08, I did do that yet though.

Anywhere I can find that material assistance would be much appreciated.

    -E.Avalon (help).

Yes, there are three ports labeled SATA (0,1,2) and four ports labeled as HARD drive (0,1,2,3). The manual says to connect hard drives in HARD drive ports, then in the SATA ports. The first two SATA ports are for additional optical drives and the last port is used for a fifth hard drive.

I got in touch with several people in technical assistance from Dell and eventually find the right driver to install.

Because I don't have the OEM disc that came with the computer, I was doing a new installation of a Windows disc. I needed F6 (third party drivers) to activate the HARD disk ports until the installation has taken place. (And honestly I don't remember what the file was immediately.)

The AHCI could not be activated because the discs I have are Serial ATA disks and in the BIOS, there is a choice between ATA and AHCI.

The problem is solved and I feel like I could do a test on this computer and become a technician for her.

What is happening with it? I entered my serial number manually and also used the software to detect it. Any suggestions?

It worked! Everything is off the Execute Disable bit: in Bios/security and Win10 loaded on the Dell Precision 690 with no problems. Thanks for the idea! {:>) I guess I'll have a spare MB now at least. Was only about $30 with installed 3 GHz proccessors on Ebay. Thanks again!

  • Installation of SAS drives in Precision 690

    Hello

I have a bunch of 10 k Fibre Channel SAS drives and I'm trying to install in a Precision 690. They seem to have connectors with 40 pins at the rear, a model example is the Seagate ST3146707FC.

Is it possible to do? If If you could point me in the right direction in terms of what parts I might need. According to the manual, it can support 4 SAS and SATA drives, so I would use a SATA and SAS together potentially 4 drives.

    Thank you.

    Hi Hierchon,

It is not possible to directly connect the Fibre Channel interface 690 PWS.

These CF disks a SCA2 aka SCA40 connector and SAS uses a 32 as SATA connector.

In order to use the FC disks, you need some type of housing CF or SAN which would then connect to the PC via a FC HBA.

The SAS cable is necessary to attach a SAS drive to the PWS690 is identical to the SATA to the motherboard, but in training, data and power connectors are gathered.

The PWS690 has two controllers. The ports labeled SATA go to the regular Intel SATA controller and take only the SATA drives. The ports labeled HD_0, etc, go to the SAS5 integrated RAID controller which will have SAS or SATA.

I hope this helps others with these issues since this question is 9 months old. :-(

  • Temperatures normal precision 690?

I recently installed a temp program (lm-sensors) on one of our precision of control of 690 and was a little scared by what I saw. The processor was sitting at about 60 ° C and the ram was average ~ 120 c. The fans gave up on a medium level.

Now it's the computer was idle for about a week. Directly next to it is a 690 identical, also slowed, with. 24 c cpu and ~ 75 c ram, fans at low altitude.

    (1) is that someone can give me an idea of what the range of "acceptable" for this machine?

    (2) any ideas on what might be different between the two? Dust cleaned out both a week ago. Unfortunately, I don't have historical time so I can't tell if it's something new.

Any input is appreciated, thank you.

Wow speedstep, as usual on a user forum to get these negative responses. I'm not stupid.

All I wanted was people to give me what temperatures they see and do not consider a problem.

I tell myself it will be myself.

    Hello

In this case, the system supports a secondary processor, but then the secondary processor that you plan to install should have quite the same specifications of the main processor and it must be installed with the heat sink.

If you can send the serial number of the system via private message I can look in the details of the system to notify the processor part not and for the part, you can contact an external supplier.

If there are issues more feel free to reply to this thread of the community, we will be happy to help you.

  • Very high readings of temperature CPU of the Mac Pro 8-core 2007

I have a Mac Pro 1.1 updated to level with two Intel Xeon X 5365 CPU and firmware 2.1. The system has worked very well for months. However, I'm worried about CPU temperature readings. Assuming that the readings are correct, I have no explanation for the difference in typical 30 degree Celsius between the processor and the heat sink.

Is it possible, that the CPU exceeds their life expectancy?

During a stress test, I can see the following typical readings:

    CPU core 87 C / 189 F

    CPU a heatsink 58 C / 136 F

    B processor 91 c/196 F

    CPU radiator B C 59/138 F

I use new thermal paste Arctic MX-2 and tried various measures, including polishing of the surface of the CPU and the heatsink using sandpaper grain 1000. Nothing has so far had no effect on temperature readings. There should be enough good contact between the heatsink and processor during the installation, because they stick well enough to remove the heatsink again.

Max TCASE. According to the operating temperature -1333 http://ark.intel.com/products/30702/Intel-Xeon-Processor-X5365-8M-Cache-3_00-GHz-MHz-FSB is 63 degrees Celsius.

According to http://www.intel.com/content/dam/doc/design-guide/5400-chipset-memory-controller-moyeu-guidelines.pdf the Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® 5300 series include a function of on-chip temperature sensor. The heat sink provided by Apple has a temperature sensor, which seems to be fixed directly on the coper plate that touches the CPU head spreader.

Given the following quote from the same document:

TIM's performance is sensitive to degradation (e.g. breakdown of fat) over the life of the processor because of the temperature of the phenomena of cycling. For this reason, measuring of the processor given TCASE value can decrease over time according to the type of material of TIM.

Anyone know if the IHS on the CPU is soldered or whether they used the thermal paste between the IHS and the die of a CPU? In the case, perhaps it could explain the current temperature readings.

    Any ideas? Thank you!

Your temperatures look a bit high, but not outrageous. The temperature measured on the Silicon of heat will be always higher than the temperature measured on the radiator. That's what the radiator is supposed to do, leads away from the heat to the fins, which would measure even more cool.

Your Mac allows to adjust speed of the fans to the top in a loop of feedback, founded the temperature of these measures. You can place a floor under your minimum speeds of fans. This can be done with the tool similar to some tool you already use, like the SMC fan control.

If the processors to exceed their safe operation temperature, your Mac will perform a sudden uncontrolled power off.
