Preferred solution for P2V (vCenter Converter or VEEAM)

I am analyzing and is about to convert a list of the physical servers in vmware VMs and I was wondering what is the best solution to use. Use vCenter Converter or VEEAM? I want to know what most people use out there and all the pros and cons with each of them.

Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, Veeam does not have any tool for p2v conversion. So, in this case, you'd better stick to VMware vCenter Converter. However, once the physical VMs remaining are converted, you will need something to save them. That's exactly where Veeam can become very useful for you.

See you soon.

I have read the FAQ and can't find a rough estimate of the time to be allocated per GB for a P2V conversion. I need to convert portable en Windows XP Pro 80 from my boss as it moves to a new machine, and he wants to know how long it will take. I have converted the machines before, but I never stand-over to see how long it takes actually. About how long should it take to perform the P2V conversion a 80GB machine? Is there a simple rule like 1 minute per GB or something?

Converter will find both drives, so there is no additional needs to be done.  Insofar as a book of recipes, the best that I can offer is the User Guide

  • Can't access file system host (MAC) shared in VMware vCenter Converter Standalone Client when wanting to create a VMware image (Windows 7 in Parallels virtual machine running on a MAC) for the option of machine Powered On.

File HOST (Mac) system is currently shared in the Parallels virtual machine and is accessible through Windows Explorer and works correctly in the Virtual Machine environment, however, after installing vCenter Converter application on the Windows virtual machine these shared folders are not accessible from the conversion tool in the selection of the target destination of the file VMware (s). I can't select an existing folder on drive "C:" to write the image so that there is not enough space available for the VMware image and it must be written in a different file system, while the image is being created.

Anyone know a way around it to show the target to write the image on the host (MAC OS) file system or is it a bug?

Thanks for the reply.  It seems that the maps are not displayed if they were created as actions by the hosts.  When I created a mapping directly from Windows, then this mapping appeared and the conversion worked fine.

  • VMware vcenter converter standalone physical conversion to virtual stuck to the completion of 81% for several days

Hello everyone I have an interesting question, I'm physical conversion to virtual pointing to the new virtual directly on the server esx conversion would set schedule for a day. But now, it's just stuck at 81% and not go further! I don't get any errors of ideas? questions are there a basis that I can look to see what is happening? Is there a way I can fix it without start over again. There are enough resources on the destination esx I had to change the hard drive space for destination and ram, but done nothing radical imprint more small which I think should do better.

It's an interesting case, you have here. I guess that conversion is complete, but somehow you do not see or a deadlock occurred.

Anyway you will probably be able to export logs to the customer. Go to the directory of newspapers to %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\logs (for WP/W3K) or vCenter Converter Standalone\logs %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\VMware\VMware (for Vista +) and find the log of the last worker (vmware-converter-worker - .log #). The status of the conversion is currently connected. Take a look, or that she has finished, is still running, is stuck.

If he has you can try restarting the client and/or server converter service. Do not stop the worker service unless you are sure that there is no conversion running!

  • vCenter Converter - P2V migration without dedicated boot partition

    Hello

I'm looking to migrate to a physical computer to my ESXi cluster with vCenter Converter but actually I got this following error message:

There is no directory "/ boot", mounted on the source machine. It is necessary to create a virtual bootable. Mount the directory "/ boot" on the source machine.

Is it possible to ignore this message? In fact, this server is in production and I don't have any space on my hard drive to create another partition.

I would like to know if we can convert a physical machine to a virtual machine without a dedicated boot partition.

Note: I had a folder/boot but mounted on my.

If anyone has any advice on this subject will be useful

Yes, in theory, you can. / boot directory under / is OK, but this error message is a bit misleading - I'd say converter couldn't recognize your * discs * and so no partitions mounted, so he couldn't find/boot as a separate partition or as a directory under /. You use some software RAID (md) on your source server?

  • vCenter Converter Standalone to vSphere Hypervisor

    Here's the situation.

I would like to P2V convert an existing Windows 2000 Server and put the new virtual server in vSphere Hypervisor 5.1.

Is this possible with the free vCenter Converter Standalone?  What version of the converter is what I use for P2V Server 2000 machine and I then have to use an older version of ESXI instead of vSphere Hypervisor 5.1?

    Any thoughts?

    Thank you

The VMware converter, you can download it here... (https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/evalcenter?p=converter) Click on the license and download tab and log in to your my account of VMware. You should see the latest version and all the last one available for download.

ESXi 4.0, you can download it here... (https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/evalcenter?p=free-esxi&lp=default). Once again, same procedure, click on the license and download tab and log in to your my account of VMware. You should see 4.1 and below (4, 4 Update 1... and so on) available for download.

  • SOW for P2V and V2V

    Hello

I'm new to VMware and still did not register in any activity related to vsphere 5 again.  Currently, my company has an agreement that needs me to run a P2V and V2V exercise for 800 server in a company and I don't know what that should I have to prepare for the conversion to succeed.

There are a few question I wanted to ask and hope that all of you who are expert on that can provide me with a guide to archive this task

    Scenario:

A company must consolidate all servers in site A, through p2v and v2v and bring them to site B and pull up all machines in a Cloud environment.

    Issues related to the:

    1. do I need an ESXi host and storage SAN (virtual infrastructure environment) to store all the converted machines from which this converted machine will be transferred to the cloud to be use on a remote site?

    2. If my client wanted to store all machines converted in the (NFS) network attached storage and import them into the Cloud Computing environment, this will be done using vmware vcenter converter?

    3. If I'm using vcenter converter 5, what is the conversion format suitable that I need to use in order for the converted servers to be used in the cloud?

    4. I have the program installation and virtual environment that consist of esxi host and iscsi storage, I convert a power on machine virtual infrastructure format and launch successfully in the esxi host. Problem is that I couldn't find an option to import a virtual machine since the converted file (NFS) and that's why I need to confirm if what format are suitable for the mentioned script so that I can import the converted NFS/SAN storage server.

    5. What are the other information I might need to know about this situation as:

    • Hardware compatibility for legacy server to participate in the activity of p2v
    • Activate the service ports of the network firewall/ports that must be for the conversion process

Grateful if you guys (expertise) can give me advice to make it happen. Thank you in advance and hope you guys can answer this question.

    Hi Eric

I'm not sure I understand your request of stil. The closest thing I associate is the command "Add to inventory" in "Datastore browser" in vSphere client. If this is the case, it opens a wizard to help you to choose the host ESX (the one who can see the data store). However it has nothing to do with the converter. In fact it is about adding to the inventory, not import.

  • What Version of Vcenter Converter to install?

    Hello world

New to the Group and have recently played with VMWare. Our 3 Vcenter servers run v4.1. I wanted to P2V a machine

to one of our guests and noticed, Vcenter Converter we had not installed on Vcenter server.  When I looked

to this he said Converter 4.2, installed and tried to start it. Came back with an error of not finding a configuration file and

that I should reinstall the software.  Following a vmware doc, it was suggested that I go to the Vcenter server and uninstall the

conversion software, uninstalled both the converter and the customer. Now trying to find the right version of the converter to reinstall.

Watching downloads I am presented with 4.3 standalone - it would be OK?

My apologies for the level of detail in the question, trying to FYI as well as ask.

Converter 4.3 is the current version, although there is also a public beta version of Converter 5.0 (http://communities.vmware.com/community/vmtn/beta/public_converter_50) that works really well. However, you also need to consider that comments of the operating systems you want to convert. The most recent versions of the converter do not support for example Windows NT and 2000.
