Prefetch.

Hi all, after the research I've done on this annoying file here is another question.

About 90% of the time after using WMP and adding and updating music files, when I try to shut down my PC along comes this CLMLSvc.exe file and leaves me not stop unless I click 'End now' after trying first of all "Cancel".

The file informs that all unsaved information will be lost. The next day, I go back to WMP to find some albums have been deleted and he can't leave the aforementioned Prefetch.

I want to shut down the PC when I'm ready and not had this annoyance stop for me as well as screw with my music files.

Please help, as I am sick and tired of having to constantly bring albums WMP on my mass storage device.

You are welcome!

My maintenance utility tells me that files in my prefetch folder have been deleted... what it means and I can get them back or do I need to?  Never heard of these before

These things are scams if you paid for it. They do nothing good for you. I recommend that you stop using it because it does not speed up your computer. In particular the registry functions.

Don't worry about the prefetch files. They will reform.

The Prefetch files are there to make your programs start faster. In fact, I doubt that you can measure the amount of time with a stopwatch.

prefetch is a folder in Windows to keep a copy so that windows can load programs, etc. faster

they have been cleared and will now need to be implemented again, Prefetch is deleted by windows with the oldest, removed as a continuous process

do not clean prefetch and you'd better uninstall AVG tune up.

  • Folder Prefetch isuspm & agent.exe

Two processes "ISUSPM. AGENT & EXE. EXE were broadcast for some time, using 100% CPU resources. Both are part of the of Windows Prefetch folder. Can I "end process" via the Task Manager or do I have a problem?

Are these accurate files in Prefetch? Then, your computer is probably infected. ISUSPM. EXE is the InstallShield update and certainly does not need to be starting with Windows. However, the right place for what it is in C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\ISUSPM.exe. If it is elsewhere, especially as a .exe in Prefetch, it's suspicious.

AGENT. EXE is the Agent of Service Update InstallShield, also shouldn't be starting with Windows and should also be in the same file as ISUSPM.exe.

Start > run > msconfig [Enter]

This will open the System Configuration utility. Look under the Startup tab and find the likely culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, apply and OK out. You don't need to restart immediately, but next time you do, you will get a dialog box saying that you have used the utility. Just check the box that says in effect, "don't mind to this subject again".

Important - do not use the System Configuration utility to stop the process. Use rather Start > Run > services.msc [Enter] and stop all services unless you really, really know what you're doing.

  • I get an error message «c:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\TASKMGR.EXE-06144C13.pf is corrupt, run Dskchk»

    c:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\TASKMGR.exe-06144C13.PF corrupted

I ran Dskchk several times and I still get the error.

Is it possible to replace or repair the file.

I also run Microsoft securty Scanner with no detected viruses.

A word on what to do?

In what circumstances this error comes up?

When you run chkdsk (not dskchk), did you use the /F switch (i.e., chkdsk/f)?  Otherwise, errors are detected only and not fixed.

The files in the Prefetch folder are used to improve performance.  As a general rule, you should leave this file only because Windows XP will periodically clean older files.  See http://www.edbott.com/weblog/2005/06/one-more-time-do-not-clean-out-your-prefetch-folder/

On the other hand, although empty manually the Prefetch folder will cause a temporary decrease in performance, doing so may be justified if there is a corrupted file, as in your case.  See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915163/en-us

Thus, if running chkdsk /F (you'll have to answer Yes and then restart) is not fix things to the top, go to C:\Windows\Prefetch and delete the offending file.  If you are unable to remove it, after return and report you receive the error message.

  • data prefetch file

I want to know about DATA PREFETCH file, which has been inadvertently deleted. It can be restored? How? This affect the performance of the WORD program? If so, how to solve it.

Apparently, it caused problems with WORD 2003 on my PC. No knowledge, experience suggestions should be highly appreciated.

Data Prefetch rebuild itself providing the Task Scheduler service is set to automatic, the Task Scheduler runs a routine every three days it will rebuild the files.

I don't see how this (removing prefetch files) would cause problems with Word 2003 or any other application.  It might make them a little slower to load, but it shouldn't cause any problems with the programs themselves, they do not need the prefetcher to work properly.

The value of the automatic task scheduler and if files don't rebuild on the next reboot, run this command:

    Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll, ProcessIdleTasks

This will force a rebuild of the Prefetch data.

  • XP Pro. Folder Prefetch files are missing

Tune up utility informs me files are missing in the prefetch folder. Pc restore fix this?

    Hi BALONEYMAN,

See What is the prefetch folder?  (Also valid for XP)

Restore the computer to an earlier time, this does not restore the deleted files.

Try to run the sfc (System File Checker) scan to find and fix missing or corrupt system files.
    a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd and click ok.
    b. at the command prompt, type sfc/scannow and press ENTER.
    c. If you are prompted, enter the Windows XP CD in order to complete the scan.
Note: The version of the service pack on CD must match the version of the service pack installed on the computer.
    d. restart the computer and check the difference.

  • Retrieve the prefetch utility

When I type 'prefetch' in the command run, I got a box telling me that he could not be found.

How can I recover this utility?

Usually, prefetch refers to an operation of XP or maybe you are looking for the prefetch folder.  It is not a utility.

If the prefetch folder does not open, your PATH statement is false, but you can always get to it by clicking on start, run and in the type box:

    %Windir%\prefetch

Click OK and the file content

If you think that playing around with the XP feature somehow prefetch will improve the performance of your system (some people believe that), you're wrong.  If you have time, you can do your own experiments, tests and analysis of timing to see how all this works, but this has already been done, documented and understood.  Yet, this is a good exercise.

If you read something in an article that is recommended to delete the prefetch folder, post the URL of the link / so I can read it.

If you encounter a performance problem, I would look elsewhere.

Here's a discussion on how works the XP Prefetch function.  It nothing to try, can't be, without, perhaps, could not be.

Mark Russinovitch and David Solomon (Process Explorer and Autoruns guy), for example, wrote an excellent article titled create improvements in the core Windows XP a more robust, powerful and scalable OS in MSDN Magazine. Their technical credentials are impeccable, and they speak very highly of the effectiveness of this feature and describe how it works - and why you should leave it alone.

No matter how you think it works or how to manipulate the folder can or can help your system.  It is not important how someone think it works. What is important is how it really works.  Read the article and you will know how it works and why you should leave it alone.

    http://msdn.Microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc302206.aspx

Read the article and the article on prefetch yourself and experiment.  Forget what you've heard, what you might think, some what reliable source told you or what is some humble opinion.  Those who are not the facts that can be measured and probably not in any scientific method.  If you want to know how to play with the prefetch function affects the performance of your system, make your own temporal measures.

Test things yourself and you will know for sure.

I used to turn off Task Scheduler Service in XP since I had no set up scheduled tasks, but this service is important for the proper functioning and maintenance of the read-ahead feature because it retains the file updated (every three days or if she needs).

Timing of power upwards, starting with the first beep (POSTAL code):

With a comprehensive directory of Prefetch:
... 0:40 at the login screen
    ... 0:58 on desktop

    After emptying the Prefetch directory:
... 0:42 to the login screen
    ... 01:27 on the desktop

It is a reproducible experience with reliable results.  No guessing, no maybes and certainly not to humble opinion.

There is only one good way to determine the performance of your XP or solve performance problems.  Measure it.

You can measure it with tools to measure boot time at XP and see the results of your DIY yourself.  I am convinced that it is better to let the prefetch folder only.

  • What is CSRSS. EXE - 08A6322A.pf? It is located in "C:\WINDOWS/Prefetch"__I tried to open it, but Windows is not a program that can be read. It is supposed to be there, or is it something that Can / should I get rid?

    Please answer quickly...

Please see my response to your other post in the networking forum. CSRSS.exe if located in the Windows/System 32 program is a Windows core system file. If it is elsewhere (not to mention the Prefetch - see below for that) it's a Trojan horse. By my suggestions to you in the other forum, you should always make sure that your computer is free from virus/malware when troubleshooting so that you know that you are working from a clean base.

    http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

The file you mention in your question is a Prefetch file. Here is an explanation of what is Prefetch:

The files in the Prefetch folder are files of data associated with the speed improvement to the what applications start. Windows XP monitors files that are used when the computer starts and when you start applications. By monitoring these files, Windows XP can preload the. Data preloading is the process by which the data that should be requested are read-ahead in the cache. Preloading of applications and startup files decreases the time required to start Windows XP and launch applications. MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!
