  Hello all, I have recently acquired an old Omnibook XE2 running Windows 98 V1. I bought essentially as a back up to an old CTX EZBook 700 that I use for programming of public security old/vintage radios and ship consoles. These items, use floppy-based DOS software. The computer is in a pristine, unused condition and works great. It built in the phone modom, but I wanted to connect my internet cable, so I bought a network card 3COM EtherLink III 3C589C and dongle from a reseller on ebay and installed it. The computer installed very well and there is no error message or apparent conflicts in Device Manager. It will be not just to connect to the internet. There are three LED lights on the dongle for '10/100', ' half/full', 'and ' ln/act'. None of these lights. This is my first time, install one of these cards and I am at a loss to know where to look for the question. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  Thanks for the info.i went through all that and still not able to connect to the internet. I bought another card and dongle and tried the new dongle with the old card and connected to the internet. If the problem is in the dongle.

  HM, tried with a live distribution of linux like Ubuntu? I highly recommend that you try it and if the network card is removed when using Linux then it s certainly a hardware related problem. But before you try linux, you need to update your BIOS and everything by default.

  1 SMBus: Downloand unzip and manually install the driver for smbus controller I have attached under attachments below.

  Go to Device Manager and click the controller smbus needing drivers.  Click the driver tab.  Click on set to update driver.

  Make sure that the include subfolders is selected and the driver should install.  Then restart.
