Problem with networking when having multiple virtual machines on a single host

Since the implementation of ESX 3.5i server on PowerEdge 1850 Server I had network problems. It took a large upstream of the violin - do not do something specific - but finally I could persuate a VM to talk to the outside world.

Virtual machines have always been able to ping other virtual machines and physical NETWORK card to the host (with a static IP address only), however with a bit of deactivation/activation etc I could possibly get it connected. I have exactly the same symptomsusing the two Windows XP and Redhat, both with VM Tools installed.

If big, I can get the virtual machines connected, *however * every time I managed to connect a computer to the outside network, she will knock off either a return to the State where I can ping only the other VMs and Teddy.

I tried them in different port groups as well as in different vSwitches with a separate Teddy, but exactly the same problem.

I thought it was just my ignorance, however after thorough reading and wasting time trying different combinations, I started to think this is a hardware incompatibility or an ESX installation problem.

Please please please, if someone can help solve the problem, or diagnose if my suspicions are correct.

I enclose my last combination of configurations!

Thanks in advance.

Run 'show port-security' on the switch and see what you have.  You can also view the current configuration of the port connected to an esx.  A switch will remove any doubt relating to port config differences type.

  • I have a problem with the password on the virtual machine.

Original title: passwords & Windows 7 virtual machines

    Hello

I am running windows 7 pro 32 bit, with a windows XP virtual to develop existing software.

The hosts & VM connect to a file on the network server. The file server is running windows XP, the network is a simple working group. I've manually created a limited user on the file server with the same name and password as my logon to windows 7.

Today, I changed my password to connect to windows 7, which I am not as often as the security people recommend that I do. I changed the password on the file server to synchronize and also the password on the virtual computer.

The virtual machine is maintaining however, somewhere the old password, which crashes, and I get the logon screen. If I enter the new password it connects then. I went into the settings of the VPC and delete the credentials saved, without effect. I removed "enable on startup" of integration features, also without effect.

So I get the password in the VPC, but then I have to enter the password to access the network share. Or I can enter the password each time I start the virtual machine. The second is less painful, but still annoying.

    Any thoughts?

  • Performance of the queries of multiple virtual machines in a single call

    Hi all

I'm a little rusty on what I used to do that, but that was almost a year ago...

I'm trying to retrieve the performance data for several virtual machines.

For now, I have this in serial mode, i.e. running QueryPerf on each virtual machine.

The problem is that I have about 800 of them connected to one of my VC. Needless to say, this take a LOT of time to review all of the VM.

Y at - it sort of method that will allow me to provide a picture of VM and application (performance counters) on all virtual machines, I guess that this will be faster than going and one by one.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello

QueryPerf method accepts an array of data object PerfQuerySpec. Here, each PerfQuerySpec object points to a managed entity for which the statistics are to recover.

So in your scenario, before calling queryPerf, you can create PerfQuerySpec for each virtual machine, assign to each of them in PerfQuerySpec table. You can then pass this [of PerfQuerySpec] the call of queryPerf to retrieve statistics for all virtual machines.

Hope that the information above solves your query.

  • What is the advantage to affect multiple virtual machines in a data store?

    Hello

Quite a question stupid and basic, but I can't answer . What is the advantage of having multiple virtual machines in a store of VMFS data instead of having each VM in another VMFS data store? (eg. 3 VMs in 1 data store or 3 data warehouses and each virtual machine in one of them). I can only think about the ease of management for storage administrator because it creates only a single large LUN.

    Thank you

By allowing multiple virtual machines in a data store, you can run more than 256 virtual machines in a DRS cluster.

As a host has a limit of 256 scsi identification numbers, which means that it accesses no more than 255 LUNS shared. 1 scsi ID is used for local storage.

In a DRS cluster as each host must be mapped to the same data warehouses to ensure that virtual machines can be moved on the cluster and run on any of the hosts.

Now in my life as an architect VMware PSO I saw that a lot of virtual machines that require a single data store. The main reason to isolate a virtual machine on a data store must provide sufficient i/o performance. This can be achieved with other solutions than to isolate a virtual machine on a data store. Having a properly architected storage subsystem is crucial, vSphere can get out of a very large number of the IOPS / s. With technologies such as SIOC and DRS for storage, you can check that the virtual machines receive IO performance according to the needs.

  • Are there problems in the creation of a virtual machine in VMware Workstation or Server and then move it to ESXi?

    Hello

I intend to pass our mailserver's current installation of Windows Server 2003 running on native hardware in a Windows Server 2008 running in a virtual machine on ESXi.

This is the same machine as we will reuse so I would prefer to be able to create the virtual machine on a different computer and test it before wiping Windows and install ESXi. Are there problems with the creation of the virtual machine in VMware Server and then migrate to ESXi using VMware Converter? I won't if the result is not a 'perfect' virtual machine that performs as well as if it had been created on ESXi from the beginning.

All our other VMs were created on ESXi from the beginning.

    Kind regards

    René Frej Nielsen

If you are not sure, you can load VMware Server 2 and then install ESXi in it and test your configuration.  Do all this from your desktop (as it is decent).  You can also do in my computer.  A quick google search should give you all the information you need to get something like this configuration.

  • Single VMDK for multiple virtual machines in esx3.5?

    Hello

Is it possible to use a single VMDK to host several VM in ESX3.5 or is this feature on the way?  I think the vmware view tech that allows you to host multiple virtual machines to a single image and store only the deltas for VMS replca.

We organize several ts who are about 12 GB per image, and each server is essentially the same.  It would reduce the space if these could be consolidated at the level of vmware.

    Thank you very much.

What you are referring to the notion of linked Clones, it's something completely different to share a single VMDK.  with linked clones, you actually run mulitple copies of a single Machine.  This fuinctionality is not available in ESX Raw but is a characteristic of Lab Manager and VMware View Premium.

Stop and start gave no problems when I had a database. Why I get problems when I have two databases?

I use: show the pfile parameter. SPFile; to make sure that I have the right parameter locations, the error should not be the location.

First of all... the Oracle Service for the instance must be started for the DB that you try to connect or start.
    Next... from the command prompt:

    Set oracle_sid =

    sqlplus sys as sysdba

Startup pfile = 'location of the pfile respective db.

Now, if you want to start or connect to another DB, which is on the same server (again assuming that the Service is STARTED)...
From the same command prompt or other session...

    Set oracle_sid =

Startup pfile = 'location of the pfile respective db.

  • Multiple virtual machines can share a common hard

I just confirmed that multiple virtual machines can share a hard if they all see it as non-permanent, which is great if you want to experiment with different linux packages at the same time.

Except the hard. REDO_ * files that are produced by a virtual machine are removed when you turn it off, and all the work is lost.

Any ideas how I could prevent the hard. REDO_ * files deleted?

the non-persistent flag is to capture instant temporary vmdk is ignored when the virtual machine is turned off.

The vmdk. REDO_ file is actually a type of snapshot. If you want to avoid that it gets deleted turned off the power, you must use a regular snapshot - but then your sharing of this vmdk with other virtual machines will no longer work.

For your scenario of I don't know one solution stable AND well other than the use of network shares.

There is a hack to really share VMDK between two virtual machines, but is more stable.

Another solution may be that share this drive via iSCSI acrooss your machines virtual more.

Some time ago I tried to interrupt the process of vmware-vmx.exe seconds before turning off the virtual machine and then copy the REDO far so that I can use it again... but if I remember right the next time that you start the virtual computer will be created a new REDO log and it is so pretty useless :-(

    $networkname = $vm.networkname

It looks like a spreadsheet with the name of a column and networkname in the other and sets the adapter accordingly.  It works so much that there is only one network adapter to set... for example if there is a virtual machine with vlan1 for 3 network cards on a virtual machine, it will define all 3 cards to the vlan 1, but if a network card is different from vlan 1 it will fail.  How to fix a vm with multiple NICs?  I tried to separate them by a comma, but he doesn't like it.  Any ideas?

You can add additional columns in your CSV file.

    Something like that

    Name, NetworkName1, NetworkName2, NetworkName3

    VM1, net1, net2 net3

    VM2, net1, net1 net1

Then, you can change the code something like this

    {foreach ($vm to $test5)

    $server = $vm.name

    Get - VM $server | Get-NetworkAdapter | %{

    Thank you

    Duncan.

    Yes, you are right.

By specifying the param -VM (Get - VM $modelVM) , you create the new virtual machine from an existing one.

Just change the cmdlet New - VM settings according to your needs and let the VM - far.

It creates your virtual machines based on a template and specification of customization.

    $esxName = "prodh1.MYDOMAIN.local"
    $template = "W2K8R2SP1"
    $datastore = "IOMEGA"
    $newVmList = "TEST-SRV01", "TEST-SRV02", "TEST-SRV03", "TEST-SRV04"
    $custSpec = "W2K8R2SP1"
    $location = "_Tobedeleted"
    $taskTab = @{}

    # Create all the VMs specified in $newVmList
    foreach($Name in $newVmList) {
         $taskTab[(New-VM -Name $Name -VMHost (Get-VMHost -Name $esxName) -Template $template -Datastore $datastore -OSCustomizationSpec $custSpec -Location $location -RunAsync).Id] = $Name
    }

Of course, you can write it as before. You will need to only change the $newVmList variable in the original script.

    foreach($Name in $newVmList) {
         $taskTab[(New-VM -Name $Name -VMHost "prodh1.MYDOMAIN.local" -Template" W2K8R2SP1" -Datastore" IOMEGA" -OSCustomizationSpec "W2K8R2SP1" -Location "_Tobedeleted" -RunAsync).Id] = $Name
    }

You will also need to insert the remaining part with the while loop and the customizations in your network!

  • Way to hide certain virtual machines on a common host networks?

I hope it's one of those moments "duh" and there is an easy solution.

Let says I have two clusters.  One of the piles is a lab with a copy of Active Directory environment used for testing purposes.  This cluster is now in a cycle of life, and I want to merge with the production cluster and remove former hosts of ESXi lab.  We add laboratory for the cluster of production networks and all is well for the laboratory of virtual machines that are not migrated on him.

However, we do not want someone to accidentally assign a production VM to a network of laboratories and vice versa.  So when you go into edit a virtual machine, and then select the NETWORK card, there is a drop-down list that displays all the networks, including new laboratory that were just added networks.  I want to hide the network of laboratories of our production domain controllers and hide our production networks where the laboratory domain controllers.  But because they are all on the same cluster, it seems to me that all subnets are fair game for select in the drop-down list.  Or am I wrong?  Is there a way to lock the network to only certain virtual machines so that they do not show up for other virtual machines to choose?

Thank you and sorry if there is an obvious solution to what I am about.

    SB

    Hey SB,.

Not sure if this is possible, to be honest, as a virtual machine are all port groups, that it has the right. Now that I think of it, maybe create two different groups of seggregating production and test/lab put in place might work because you would not be able to connect to a virtual computer on a cluster to a portgroup on a host.

Names must be different, but otherwise you could see similar across clusters names if the port groups may be two different entities altogether. Other than that, can't really invent any scenerios in which a portgroup wouldn't appear on a virtual machine if it is present on a host

  • No network connection between the virtual machines on different hosts ESXi

I have several 5.0 ESXi hosts in a cluster managed by vCenter Server 5 and I have network problems:

    1. [Host A] running a virtual machine can ping any other computer virtual running on the [host A] great!
    2. A virtual machine running on host [B] can ping any other virtual machine running on [B] home - very well!
    3. [host A] (from the ESXi console) can ping any virtual machine running on [B] home - even better!
    4. [B] home (from the ESXi console) can ping any virtual machine running [host A] - beautiful set!
    5. A virtual machine running [host A] can not ping any virtual computer running on host [B] and vice versa - bad, very bad!

So basically the problem is that the virtual machines can communicate on hosts. It is a major problem that I need to fix, for obvious reasons.

Networking on all hosts is configured exactly the same way: a unique and standard vSwitch with a pair of gigabit network cards grouped, vmkernels configured for the vMotion, NFS and network management and a group of ports configured for the VIRTUAL local area network used by the VMs. (vMotion works fine on hosts, storage vMotion works very well too.) All virtual machines are servers Windows (2003 and 2008).

Reason #3 and #4 above, my assumption is that #5 must be the result of an ESXi/vCenter configuration issue and not a problem with the switches of material upstream. Is this a reasonable assumption?

Whatever it is, can anyone offer suggestions on how can I fix? It is quite annoying as I'm pretty sure that these hosts are configured in the same manner as those of our production cluster, which does not at all these problems!

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.

To be honest, it looks like a problem with your physical network-

How is the physical network configured - are NIC connects it to the same physical switches? Are the virtual machines on the same subnet? If this is not the case, they are able to ping the gateway sbnet? Can you piing host IP address from the virtual machines?
