  Luke, no protection against the virus. Is the same for the cleaning of the apps and most of the other third-party utilities. Maintain OSX and using good sense practical computer course and you will be fine. Watch where you click.

  For backups Time Machine from Apple is better IMO.  Get an external hard drive 2 to 3 times the size of your internal drive and let Time Machine is something. The first backup may take a while, but subsequent backups occur every hour in the background. you won't know what is going on.   You can remove your usb flash drive write protection using the method below:

  By your statement your new Macbook pro has Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), which does not seems reasonable as Panther support only the PowerPC proccessors so that all the latest Mac computers use only Intel proccessors.

  What is the version number listed? (I guess Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion))

  For the Lion, the software provided by Apple Software Update, however please specify first the version of the OS, so I will be able to provide you with the exact according to steps.
