Provision of space shows capacity

Dear all,

I need to solve a problem with explanation on why I see the configuration space for the data store on VMware 5.5 more capacity twice, even if I don't use a thin disks of virtual machines (I use zero eagered thick) and snapshots are not that big

any idea

Thank you

Go to Page > Page Properties and on the 'fill' section 'Top' to 0. That should do it.

  • Space 'By' capacity risk details

    Hello

We have an installation vCenter Operations Manager 5.7.1 vanilla however, there seems to be a problem the reportage of "Disk space" in the capacity of the virtual machine.

VCOM/VCOPS reports that we have 0 days of storage remaining, not only that, but we are much more.

We have 428 virtual machines deployed in environment, all the thick put into service. The total available capacity for the environment is 120 TB (FC SAN). All virtual machines have their storage are responsible (i.e. There is no end all provisioning), VCOM, however as we are by 345 VMs and our capacity is only 83 VM. It's just rubbish.

Y at - it a setting or configuratoin one element that I'm missing?

As mentioned, it is a vanilla without changes and about 3 weeks installation, with a value of logging. We have not deployed any VMs since VCOM has been deployed.

    Thank you

I can't say exactly why this happens, it is perhaps protected by some kind of container where calculation go wrong (most likely you run this report on the subject of the world?). However - you seem to have a great environment. You can modify the policy a bit to see the best results (which did it on our site).

Click on 'View information' "change political default" Configuration. This should give you a pop-up. Go to point 3 a, uncheck the option '-Datastore > disk space, containers"in the column"pay-as-you-go. " The allocation of column is more cautious. If so in demand that allowance are chosen the more restrictive applies. Which is the container to selection Allocation. When checking at the cluster level, this should be good, but an accumulation of several containers (host clustering in datacenter world) will generate results 'false '.

  • Satellite C660: HARD drive space shows only 20 GB of free?

Toshiba Satellite c660 with 320 GB of disk space, it shows that 2 hard drives or 2 partitions, one called data shows only 20.6 GB of free on 148, but when I go in there I can only find at maximum approximately 50 GB even with all the backups?

    Hello

There are more partitions on the HARD drive.
You can see it in disk management.
Right click on computer and select manage.
Now you should be able to go to the disk management which will show you all the available partitions.

A hidden partition is used for the Windows 7 backup files that are needed to fix the Windows 7 in the case where something goes wrong with the OS.
Then, you can find a Windows partition and the other partition is used for HARD drive recovery. The point is that you are able to run the system recovery from the HARD drive without the use of the recovery disc (recover disk must be created using the recovery disc creator)

I know there is a thread that includes a way to calculate it, but I was wondering if a method somewhere under the values of get-datastore already had these in there.  I guess it is more efficient to use something that exists rather than calculate it in a function in my script.

  • Use of specified space

    Hello

SAN HQ and EqualLogic Group Manager report only one space left 10% on one of our 6210xs EqualLogic volumes. We have two virtual machines in VMWare with thin disks residing on this volume. No snapshot used or reserved space.

The vSphere client reports a different amount of space left (a lot more).

I understand that a block storage device may not be aware of the correct amount of beeing used space on the OS volume. Is this correct?

If so, I wonder why this feature (use of space show) has been implemented at the forefront in storage management if it does not work reliable at this level?

Should I disable instead all kinds of reports of volume and warnings to the storage layer and delegate this function to the OS (in my case create respective alarms in vsphere client for the use of space)?

    Thank you very much.

    Best regards

    Martin

    Hello Martin,

Re: Values EQL GUI.  This is the correct behavior.  By default block storage devices are not informed when a file is deleted.  A deletion is a writing on an allocation table maintained only by the file system of the OS.

There is a new SCSI command that support more in addition to file systems.  CANCEL THE SCSI MAPPING.  AKA space Reclaim.  When a file is deleted, the host sends the command cancel with the departure of LBA MAPPING and the number of blocks after that for free.  EQL spatial rupture in the pages of 15MB, when an entire page is not assigned, he returned to the free space on a thin provisioned volume.  If the volume is thick put into service just use space will drop.

Part 2.  When VMware creates a 40 GB VM, even with thick VMDK provisioned, it is not actually write 40 GB.  No where close actually.  She however deduct 40GB of the allocation table in the VMFS data store.

If you do not use the EQL (async or sync) replication, you can free up space manually using the CLI utility.

For version 6.0 and ESXi v5.5 here's how to run this utility.

  • Impossible to reclaim the unused space using vmkfstools

I have a Winxp virtual machine that had a thick put in service 20GB HDD with only 10 GB used. With the virtual machine off, I ran vmkfstools-i XPTICK.vmdk thin XPTHIN.vmdk d and ended with a disc thin provisioned, size which shows 19,827,710 as and 20,971,520 as size put in service. When I turn on the virtual machine, it is projection 10 used HARD disk space. Is there another way to recover unused space? ESXi5.5 U2 autonomous thanks

If zeroing free space disk (sdelete with the - z option) does not clean enough adjacent free clusters, i.e. data on the virtual file system spans the partition, it is unfortunately not that much vmkfstools can do. In this case, you will need to use VMware Converter for example and run a conversion, V2V Volume Based (advanced options).

  • The amount of available disk space keeps fluctuating.

I returned from more than 20 GB of space available Tuesday to 2 MB Wednesday, up to 702 MB, up to 100 KB, then back to 200 MB. Is this a virus? I ran several scans of varioud virus and nothing was found, but I see no other reason for the significant loss of disk space. I am running XP with Norton as my antivirus.

    Hi LostinCyberSpaceMD,

    1. Did you the latest changes on the computer?
    2. What is the correct disk space showing in disk management?
    3. You have installed any new software, and programs on the computer?

    Method 1
See the link below and try the steps mentioned, check if it helps.
How to make a computer faster: 6 ways to speed up your PC
    http://www.Microsoft.com/atwork/maintenance/speed.aspx

    Method 2
If the previous step fails, then check if the problem persists in the safe mode and after return with the result.
A description of the options to start in Windows XP Mode
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/315222

    Method 3
If the problem does not persist in safe mode, then it is possible that some third-party programs installed on the computer is causing the problem.
I suggest that you configure the computer in a clean boot state and check if it helps.

To help resolve the error and other messages, you can start Windows XP by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot". A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

See section to learn more about how to clean boot.

  • What happened to my 10 GB of free space on the disk?

I don't really know... Yesterday, I deleted a lot of films and albums of music from my pc and I am very sure that after I emptied the recycling bin, I had more than 31 GB of free space on the disk. But now... after that I just turned on my pc to start by knitting I noticed that my changed only 20.9 GB HDD space... what happened to the other 10 GB? No, I did not commit a any error with what I pressed on to empty the recycling bin and I even run windirstat just to check everything and I saw nothing wrong with all my files...

IM using windows 7 ultimate sp1 with 100 GB hard drive (no partitions) 2 GB ram and 2.3 ghz cpu

    Hello

Thanks for posting your query in the Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand from the description of the problem, that after deleting a few files of the computer, the hardware space shows 20.9 GB despite 31 GB in Windows 7 computer.

I understand this must be frustrating, but don't worry, we're here to help and guide you in the right direction.

I suggest you try these methods and check if it helps.

Try logging in SafeMode with network and check if the problem persists. If the problem is resolved, perform the scan anti-virus in SafeMode with network.

    Method 1

    Step 1

Start your computer in safe mode with networking.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

Note: When, at the forefront of startup options select safe mode with network.

    Step 2

I suggest you scan your computer with the Microsoft Security Scanner, which would help us to get rid of viruses, spyware and other malicious software.
The Microsoft Security Scanner is a downloadable security tool for free which allows analysis at the application and helps remove viruses, spyware and other malware. It works with your current antivirus software.
    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner ends 10 days after being downloaded. To restart a scan with the latest definitions of anti-malware, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.
Note: The data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.

    Method 2

Reduce the number of unnecessary files on your hard disk to free up disk space and help your computer run faster, use disk cleanup. It removes temporary files, empty the Recycle Bin, and removes a variety of file system and other items that you no longer need.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-in/Windows7/delete-files-using-disk-cleanup

    It will be useful.

Let us know if you encounter problems with Windows in the future. We will be happy to help you.

  • Adding space with bigger hard drives with 3WARE 9650SE RAID

My original installation of Windows 7 is on a RAID 10 set up using 4 640 GB drives on a 3Ware 9650SE RAID card.  I replaced the drives one at a time with 1 TB drives, leaving reconstruction table each time before adding another.   Now that all 4 are in place, I would have a little less than 2 TB of space, but it does not appear.  Win7 is installed on a 200 GB partition, with the rest of the disk space showing that GB 972 yet (that I use for file storage).   Any thoughts on how to extend this option to use all the available space under the name more storage RAID 2?  I does not appear under management of the reader and does not help the 3DM 2 with resizing tool.  This has worked well for the RAID migration when on the SATAs motherboard, but it's another controller.   I would prefer not to have to reload Windows to use the extra space.

  • msg.hbacommon.outOfSpace:There is reached for disk virtual server_1 - 000008.vmdk.  You may be able to continue this session by freeing up disk space on the partition relevant, clicking Retry

    Hello

I've seen various threads on this topic but have not found a resolution or explanation that fits my specific scenario.

I have an ESXi 4 server connected to a San (700 GB) with 1 virtual machine on that (Exchange 2010).   The virtual machine, I created has 4 discs, 50GB for the OS, 2 240 GB for database drives and 1 100 GB drive for newspapers.  In the operating system, each partition shows that I have a lot of space.  Last night, I'm moving on our Exchange 2003 Server mailboxes when all of a sudden I get this error message and stop the server:

msg.hbacommon.outOfSpace:There is reached for disk virtual server_1 - 000008.vmdk.  You may be able to continue this session by freeing up disk space on the relevant partition, and then click Retry.  Otherwise, click Cancel to end this session.  Try again / Stop

Retry reproduced the error... Stop stop the virtual machine.

After I stop, I look in the client vsphere under hardware > storage > SAN where the disc is, and I find that I'm out of space.

Now, I created multiple snapshots I could fall back on since when I was doing the initial setup of the Exchange.  I deleted a large number of people and got up to about 50 GB of free space showing on the SAN.  However, this number is declining slowly.

Now, when I created the virtual machine, I configured the ramdisks to be of a certain size already (50 GB, 240 GB, etc.).  How is it that adding data (moving the mailbox) using more space than what is already assigned to the virtual disks?  This will become a huge problem that I have several other mailboxes to move and I thought that I had already allocated to the space I need.

Why is that when the server is just sitting there.  Available free space decreases?  It has something to do with the type of disc that I created? (Thickness)

Could someone please explain why this is happening and, more important still, how can I stop it without having to do anything too drastic?

    Hello.

"I have an ESXi 4 server connected to a San (700 GB) with 1 virtual machine on that (Exchange 2010).   The virtual machine, I created has 4 discs, 50GB for the OS, 2 240 GB for database drives and 1 100 GB drive for newspapers.  In the operating system, each partition shows that I have a lot of space. »

You have created 630 GB of thick disks on a 700 GB of data store.  Thick disks use this allocated space, no matter what operating system did with them in terms of use. Yes GB 630 thickness = 630 GB used space on the data store.

"Last night, I'm moving on the mailboxes of our Exchange 2003 server, when all of a sudden I get this error message and stop the server:
msg.hbacommon.outOfSpace:There is reached for disk virtual server_1 - 000008.vmdk.  You may be able to continue this session by freeing up disk space on the relevant partition, and then click Retry.  Otherwise, click Cancel to end this session.  Try again / Stop
After I stop, I look in the client vsphere under hardware > storage > SAN where the disc is, and I find that I'm out of space. »

You still snapshots (as you also mentioned) on this virtual machine as well.  With only 70 GB of free space on the data store, the snapshots are defintely going to be able to fill the volume in short order.

«Now, when I created the virtual machine, I configured the ramdisks to be of a certain size already (50 GB, 240 GB, etc.).»  How is it that adding data (moving the mailbox) using more space than what is already assigned to the virtual disks? »

When you create the snapshot, a new drive is created that will get all new disk writes.  So to copy a large number of mailboxes will use a lot of space quickly.

"Why is that when the server is just sitting there."  Available free space decreases?  It has something to do with the type of disc that I created? (Thick) »

Thick is using space, and convert it into thin disks may help to varying degrees - depending on the amount of writes.  It is above all the snapshots of the origin of the problem, or at least it's where you can focus your attention to solve this.

"Could someone please explain why this is happening and, more important still, how can I stop it without having to do anything too drastic?"

Remove snapshots and/or move this virtual machine to a data store greater would be the simpler of two corrections.

    Good luck!
