Question RE: being an Oracle Developer, best practices.

Dear Oracle gurus:

If you would be so kind as to entertain a few lame need questions will Jr. Oracle Developer, I would be very happy!

1. If I understand correctly, I can pretty much Learn SQL and PL/SQL using Oracle 10 g Express without the need to install further configuration of Oracle? SQL Developer and Oracle 10 g Express would be sufficient for learning SQL and PL/SQL?

2. how the future for an Oracle developer who is well versed in SQL and PL/SQL? Was hoping to specialize in this aspect of Oracle and may continue with the discoverer (I had previously had some experience deploy reports in Discoverer 3/3i). Your opinions?

3. as an Oracle Developer, am I supposed to know that s/n matter as well? Or stick to the development? The reason why I ask is - I found that if I try to do too much, a whole bunch of nothing does happen. Isn't better to focus on something and do it well?

4. any ideas or comments about the future of development in Oracle you want to share?

Thank you for your time! :)

Oracle 10g Express Edition will give you at least 1 year of learning. If you are really able to SQL and PL/SQL Express, you are longer than many so-called Oracle professionals.

2. how the future for an Oracle developer who is well versed in SQL and PL/SQL? Was hoping to specialize in this aspect of Oracle and may continue with the discoverer (I had previously had some experience deploy reports in Discoverer 3/3i). Your opinions?

Unfortunately, I see that SQL and PL/SQL to be lost in the hype Java and .net. More and more developers and applications forget the basics of database.

Indeed, a much touted merger devleopment demo focuses strongly on tanks (single general-purpose attribute-value lookup Table)

A good developer knows his tool. A good database developer Oracle SQL doesn't understand.

A great developer Oracle includes the internal implications of the database, but also a DBA. Both (but rarely) should work closely together.

For example, a great developer understands that you do not commit in a loop. The 'why' of it is often seen by developers as "something DBA.

I would say a lot of reading is in front of you. I would encourage the following, in the following order:

Manual chapter, Oracle Concepts 1
Guide the developer Oracle - foundations, chapters 1 & 2
one of the books of database Oracle Expert Tom Kyte
O'Reilly books "SQL Cookbook"
Books O'Reilly Oracle PL/SQL (co-) written by Steve Feuerstein
ORacle concepts, the rest
Dan Morgan Library to http://www.morganslibrary.com
Developer's Guide - Fundamentals - Oracle the rest
The Oracle - other as interest falls Developer's Guide

Oracle guides are available from http://tahiti.oracle.com and most SQL and PL/SQL can be exercised on the free and moderately light (sic) Express Edition.

  • Question of VLAN by default and best practices

    Hi all

    I recently read on VMwares ESX Server 802. 1 q-paper Solutions of VLAN and came across the following article:

    Question of VLAN native (aka "VLAN1 Issues")

    "VLAN native is used to switch protocol management and control.  Native frames of VLAN is not VLAN ID tag in many types of switches, and in which case the trunk ports implicitly treat all frames not marked as frame VLAN native.

    VLAN 1 is the native VLAN ID by default for most Cisco switches.  However, in many enterprise networks, the VLAN is the VLAN 1 or 100, it could be any number depending on your configuration of switch type and running.

    It is common recommended to avoid using some VLAN native (often the VLAN 1) for any regular data traffic.  VMware recommends that you not associate any group native virutal server ESX VLAN VLAN ID switch port.  Also, so that you avoid them VLAN native for your groups of ports VLAN, no native VLAN related configuration is required on ESX Server systems. »

    That being said, I know a lot of people and more small to medium-sized networks leave light network VLAN by default.  If this is the case it would be better to change the entire network switching to one VLAN different and then put groups of ports on the same VLAN?  Or is the problem with the default VLAN really does not impact?

    Hello

    You have quite a few involved networks when you use virtualization and some I would classify as a virtualization host networks: the Service Console, VMotion, storage over IP.  They are more likely on separate networks of your VM network traffic... At least use VLAN to do this.

    See http://kensvirtualreality.wordpress.org for a good series of articles on virtual networks.

  • Best practices for placing < meta > tags of the document HEAD

    Good afternoon

    We use the ability of Oracle UCM to dynamically generate pages based on page templates, model region and data files of contributor contributors can edit and publish. We have a specific need to include meta tags in the head section of each page that are customized for the data present in each contributor data file. Including meta tags in the model of the region that relates to a section of our site Web do not work, because it does not include a < head > section. Otherwise, I can't put metatags in the page template, since the data contained in each meta tag are specific to the metadata surrounding each contributor of the data file.

    My question is this: is there a best practice, or Oracle-taking method in charge of this task? I believe he remains the path to get there, as is a very common need for meta tags for search engines and social media sites.

  • AWM best practices 11g

    I will build a cube in AWM 11 g. It has 25 dimensions and some of the dimension tables has over 30 million records. I partitioned the cube on the dimension of time with the lowest level being months. One dimension took about 20 hours to build. I am now under the cube and makes more than 30 hours and its construction yet. I don't know what needs to be done to improve performance and just best practices in general. Thank you in advance. What is the recommended number of dimension to be used in the cube and are there recommendations as to how attributes affect the dim or hierarchies or how many measures to include in the cube. These cubes using OBIEE as the reporting tool.

    Thank you in advance.

    Hello

    25 dimensions are really much if you say that each cube is sized by each of them. With Oracle OLAP, you do not have these limits for a number of dimensions of a cube, but a typical good efficient cube can have 5 to 8 dimensions. If you analyze your business needs, you might be able to create smaller cubes much keep each cube to have 5 to 8 dimensions so that the loading process is much faster and suffocate.

    How many members you load dimension which takes 20 hours? You load a view or table? Also if you do a complete refresh of dimesion with synchronization and the cube is also loaded it takes a while to load but still 20 hours indicates that something is wrong here.

    Cube load performance depends on several facts:

    1 percent to precalculate.

    2. the cube dimension. How many members in each a dimension.

    3. What is the depth of the predetermined.

    4. how many measures you have in each cube.

    5. is partitioned cube? If Yes, what level, you need to maybe resolve and arrive at a correct level for the partition. How partititions.

    6. If your cubes are not partitioned, then you make series load that is eating all your time building.

    More you pre-computes, load cube takes more time, AW takes more space on the disk. A cube performance has good combination of precompute so that charge takes in your load limit and also query does not suffer.

  • Best practices of VCO - combination of workflow

    I took a modular approach to a task, I am trying to accomplish in VCO. I want to take action against the network to ANY NAT routed ORG in a specified org.  Here is where I am now. Would like to comment on what is possible or recommended before you start down the wrong path. I have two separate workflows individually do what I need to do and now I need to combine them.  Two of these workflows work well separately and I am now ready to combine both in a single workflow.

    1 Both Workflows.jpg

    (1) with the help on this forum of Joerg, I was able to return all ORG networks in a particular ORG, then filters according to the fenced mode return array ONLY NAT network routed ORG.  Name of the workflow is «Routed BACK ORG nets» The input parameter is an organization, and the output parameter is an array of NAT routed networks ORG.

    1 RETURN ORG Net.jpg

    2) there is an existing workflow (comes with the VCD 1.5 plugin) that configures a routed NAT ORG network. The input parameter is a routed Org network of NAT. name of the workflow is 'Routed SECURE ORG Net' and I would like to use this (slightly modified) workflow as it is perfect for a task I need to fill.

    1 Secure ORG Nets.jpg

    I think there are two options.

    (1) to include javascript code and the logic of the 'SECURE Ext ORG' which has several elements in the workflow in the workflow for "Nets of ORG routed BACK" Net inside the loop of the search RETURN flow.

    (2) the second option is to add the 'SECURE routed ORG Net' as part of workflow for existing workflow "Nets of ORG routed RETURN" as part of workflow.  I like this approach better because it allows me to keep them separate and reuse elements of the workflow or individually.

    Issues related to the:

    What is recommended?

    Y thre restrictions on what I can pass as an INPUT to the second workflow (embedded) parameter? Can I pass only the JavaScript object references or can I get through an array of '.name' routed networks NAT ORG property in the table?

    I assume that the input parameters for the second workflow can be invited in the first and passed as OUTPUT to the second workflow (embedded) where they will be mapped as INPUT?

    I read through the developer's guide, but I wanted to get your comments here also.

    Hello!

    A good principle (from software engineering) is DRY: don't repeat yourself!

    So call to a workflow library indeed seems to be the best approach for the majority of use cases. (So you don't have to worry about maintaining the logic, if something changes in the next version,...) That's exactly what the workflow library is for.

    To move objects to a workflow item, you can use all the inventory items, basic (such as boolean, string, number) and generic data types ones (all, properties). Each of them can also be an array.

    However, the type must adapt to the input of the called Workflow parameter (or be "ANY").

    So in your case, I guess that the COURSE called...-Workflow is waiting for just a single network (perhaps by his name, probably also OrgNetwork).

    You must create the logic of loop to go through all the networks you want to reconfigure manually (in your "external" workflow).

    For an example: see http://www.vcoteam.info/learn-vco/creating-workflow-loops.html

    And as Tip: the developer's Guide is unfortunately not really useful for this "methodology" - related issues. See the examples on http://www.vcoteam.info , the beautiful videos on youtube ( http://www.vcoportal.de/2011/11/getting-started-with-workflow-development/ ) and watch the recording of our session at VMworld: http://www.vcoportal.de/2011/10/workflow-development-best-practices/ (audio recording is in the post in mp3 format)

  • Best practices for retrieving a single value from the Oracle Table

    I'm using Oracle Database 11 g Release 11.2.0.3.0.

    I would like to know the best practice to do something like that in a PL/SQL block:

    DECLARE
        v_student_id    student.student_id%TYPE;
    BEGIN
        SELECT  student_id
        INTO    v_student_id
        FROM    student
        WHERE   last_name = 'Smith'
        AND     ROWNUM = 1;
    END;

    Of course, the problem here is that when there is no success, the NO_DATA_FOUND exception is thrown, which interrupts the execution.  So, what happens if I want to continue despite the exception?

    Yes, I could create a block nested with EXCEPTION section, etc, but it seems awkward for what seems to be a very simple task.

    I've also seen this handled like this:

    DECLARE
        v_student_id    student.student_id%TYPE;
        CURSOR c_student_id IS
            SELECT  student_id
            FROM    student
            WHERE   last_name = 'Smith'
            AND     ROWNUM = 1;
    BEGIN
        OPEN c_student_id;
        FETCH c_student_id INTO v_student_id;
        IF c_student_id%NOTFOUND THEN
            DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('not found');
        ELSE
            (do stuff)
        END IF;
        CLOSE c_student_id;
    END;

    But it still seems to kill an Ant with a hammer.

    What is the best way?

    Thanks for any help you can give.

    It depends on what you want to do.

    You expect only 0 or 1 rank. SELECT INTO waiting for exactly 1 row. In this case, SELECT INTO may not be the best solution.

    What exactly do you do if you return 0 rows?

    If you want to set a variable with a NULL value and continue the treatment, Frank's response looks good, or else use the modular Billy approach.

    If you want to "do things" when you get a line and 'status quo' when you don't get a line, then you can consider a loop FOR:

    declare
      l_empno scott.emp.empno%type := 7789;
      l_ename scott.emp.ename%type;
    begin
      for rec in (
        select ename from scott.emp
        where empno = l_empno
        and rownum = 1
      ) loop
    l_ename := rec.ename;
        dbms_output.put_line('<' || l_ename || '>');
      end loop;
    end;
    /

    Note that when no line is found, there is no output at all.

  • Oracle BPM 11g - a book, resource on best practices?

    Hello all, I need start an application with Oracle 11g BPM, for this I need to read best practices to run this kind of implementation, integration ADF 11 g / BPM 11 g, is there a book or resource online to talk about this?, please if you know all the resources, please comment.

    Hi Carlos,

    You've probably seen these but my top 3 books of 11g Oracle BPM would be:

    1 getting Started with Oracle BPM Suite 11 GR 1 material - A Hands on Tutorial - what is very well written and I think is the best for new people to start.  I love that it covers the entire suite in depth.  The instructions are clear and well written, but get a bit dated (it was written for the PS3 and we're currently on PS6).  This also covers the basics of the integration of the ADF you're looking for.

    2 oracle BPM Suite 11 g: Advanced Topics BPMN - Mark Nelson has been one of the authors on this.  Anything by mark, I will read.  This book fills in some areas that are difficult to learn yourself.

    3 oracle Business Process Management Suite 11 g Handbook - a little misread in some places, but has more information and best practices in some areas.

  • change the vswitch, best practical question

    Hello

    Here is the scenario, I invited XP and I want to spend the vswitch he connected too.

    Is it safe to simply change the properties of comments in the vshpere client, set up the different vswitch, select ok. (without closing comments)

    Here is what happened last week and I would like to get feedback to see if I did something outside best practices.

    I have a xp machine who's job it is to move files within our company.  In house app, had problems with the performance, of course the bandwidth network has been a problem but also a sustained the 100% CPU usage whenever the application in the House is running. I made a few changes, first I changed the network card to a vswitch with no other guests connected, than giving a non-shared on the network connection to this comments

    I stopped our applications in the House that copies the edited files the client settings, change to the another vswitch, selecting ok...  Everything seemed fine, restarted apps and found no problem.

    The next day, I increased the RAM on the host of Meg 512 to 1024 Meg as the available physical ram was weak, and I suspected disk cache.  Stop the guest computer, editing the memory and it has increased from 1024 to vsphere...  Restarted and is the reason for my questions, which connects to run the application has been corrupted and would not load the profile.

    I should add that the application users often use the method "end task" through windows to complete the process as soon as they are sometimes does not.  Not something I tend to do what I think may be a cause of file corruption.

    My boss suggested that he believes that my approach is the cause of profile corruption, citing specifically the way in which I changed the vswitch that the guest has been connected.  My understanding at this point is that my approach was equivalent to not patch a machine and plug in another switch, and I don't see how, which could cause a windows become corrupt profile.

    Ideas of the community?  Expect honesty burtal if my method is in error.

    Change the who vswitch a virtual computer to connect during operation is perfectly accetable as only the switch that you move to can access the subnet of the virtual computer is configured for - it's like unplugging a [machine to go to an actual physical switch and plug it into a new physical switch -

    deploy webtier on this OHS1 to protect the resources on OHS1. webtier will be recorded at OAM (where will be able to communicate with OAM)

    I also IAM deployed on weblogic2 & OHS2

    IAM components have weblogic. then ok. But you don't need to ohs2 here, unless your application itself requires OHS for hosting. But here, you mention that it is fair to IAM - so no need to OSH here. IAM installing requires weblogic.
