  Thanks for the quick response.  Running as an administrator was one of the first things I did when the problem arose.  Sorry, I would understand that in my original post.

  Since writing the post, I downloaded a free trial of Acrobat and then entered my key.  Worked well.  Here's my theory on what was wrong.

  1. I bought this software in July last and immediately installed on my laptop Windows 8.1.  Installation worked fine.  My home computer was running Windows 7 and a previous version of Acrobat so I had no reason to install my copy of 'extra' on this machine.

  2 just bought a new PC running Windows 8.1 and home that I'm going through the process of your travel time.  When I tried to install the latest version of Acrobat on the new PC, he produced the error described.  Most likely, Microsoft changed something that makes my original installation of incompatible.  Meanwhile, Adobe fixed the incompatibility later install works.

  Of course, this is strictly theoretical, but of course, it seems to fit.

  Please consider this case closed.

  You can install the Acrobat x update without installing acrobat 9.

  Start the software acrobat x installation.  you will be prompted for the serial number x' are, first of all.

  After entering the serial number x' are, you will be asked (with a drop-down menu) to select the eligible program (acrobat 9).  Select acrobat 9 and enter the serial number its (acrobat 9).

  Enter the correct number at the right time and proceed with the installation.

  Make sure you did more that 'try the link.  Make sure you have made the necessary changes or explain if you couldn't tick the box "any developer".

  As long as you have access to reinstall you're good to go.  You are allowed to install and activate it on 2 machines.

  If Windows Vista was preinstalled on your old machine, it is attached to this computer, and you cannot install it on the new machine.

  If you bought Windows Vista software in a store, you can remove from the old machine and install it on the new.  There could be a problem with the activation (which is different then registration).  After installation, start the product activation.  If it will not activate online, use the phone activation option and explain the situation to the person who answers.

  Servers Windows automatically takes iSCISI HARD disk drivers because vmware speacially for servers...

  In the case of windows XP please download ISO for the driver (vmscsi - 1.2.0.4.flp) and connect the ISO image of the floppy disk on your VM.

  Start with the diskette and press F6 to install an iSCSI   driver disk (flv) , then continue on your XP installation.

  Acrobat 8 as initially released only works on versions of Windows, not later than Windows XP. Updated to 8.1, it will install and most of the functions of work under Windows 7 and 8.x. It is not officially supported on Windows 10 and more important still, it does not work with any version reasonably modern Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) or Internet Explorer.

  We strongly recommend Acrobat DC license. (Note that the only version of Acrobat that is currently available is Acrobat DC).
