Reformat my iMac?

I have an iMac 27 "Intel Core i5 w/8 GB of RAM in December 2012, now under OSX Mavericks. I have not updated my system b/c I am afraid that my CS6 Adobe and other applications are not compatible, I still need. I was migrating my files and applications on 3 recent iMacs in the past 10 years every time I get a new Mac. Make sure that all required software updates are performed as they come.

I've known repetitive problems during the past year which have been resolved using the Applecare Support and trial and error, but my Applecare has just expired. The biggest problem is that applications are run very slowly and take forever to load - up to 3 minutes sometimes. There are the spinning beachball. Sometimes apps are block and I have to force to leave them. Sometimes it takes a hard stop and restarts as much as 2-3 to get back to 'normal '. I experience problems when navigation where Web sites will not load and getting stuck reloading pages (this may be a problem of police according to my last dose Applecare) web. I am using Malwarebytes, but he finds that rarely something suspect and Tech Tool did not also come with something suspicious. I wonder if moving old files/applications every time I get a new Mac is causing it to be slow. Or is it for policing? (I work with dozens of fonts and many remain active in my fonts utility).

I plan to start again and reformatting of this Mac. The new OSX Upgrade. I want to migrate the old files and applications for the reformatted Mac in a selective way and upgrade of those who no longer work. It's that or a new Mac purchase, but would rather try to do a better job. My MacBook Pro running the same OS and works much more vivid.

Suggestions appreciated. Y at - it somewhere I can read about reformatting in detail? Reinstall the old files and applications from a backup drive?

Thanks to all who took the time to read this and respond.

Hi Greg,.

Thank you for using communities Support from Apple. I'm sorry to hear that you are having these problems with your iMac. Given the wide range of general performance problems you are describing, may first want to ensure that it is not a matter of simple resources (my apologies if you have already done so). If you open the activity monitor, you should be able to see if these periods of slow or timing coincide with the pressure/excessive memory usage, high CPU usage, disk space available low or high reads/writes disk, etc.. You can find information and the steps in the following articles useful:

    Hello

I want to reformat my iMac to a new configuration, because it didn't happen in 6 years. I wonder, once I reformatted the iMac how do reconnect you all iDevices without wiping those who, as I believe that if he has not connected before it gives you messages on the iDevice has not been linked previously you want to set up as new.

This is the case, how can I get around this?

It will not wipe your iOS devices. I saw this message: "not been linked previously you want to configure as a new.

When you install a new iOS device and if she asks you after the failure of OS X, say Yes. I know that the message is not clear, but it will not wipe your device. Please take a look at this thread: question of itunes "implemented in the new ipad"in particular the post halfway down by ozZySPL that explains the problem. I did it myself without any problems.

Hi, I just reformatted my mac and I'm trying to reinstall Photoshop CS5. I downloaded the Adobe installers, but the file appears to be "damaged". When I try to open it I get the message: 'Install' is corrupted and cannot be opened. You must eject the disk image. Help, please.

first of all, it's perhaps wrong message because of a problem with mac.

so, do this: How to open third-party developers not identified in Mac OS X applications ' Mac Tips .

If you still see this message after allowing the installation of unidentified developers, you do not have a corrupted install file and need to re-download.

  • iMac 27 inch starts more correctly

    Hello

Last week I reformat my iMac 27 (imac12, 2) 3.4 Ghz, 8 GB RAM (mid-2011) and Turbodrive and reinstall with 10.11.3 from a USB key. previously, he worked with 10.9.5 for 2 years now.

This morning I wouldn't start properly. The display shows 4 pink blocks. Then the OS X is loading and seems to work. When the Apple Logo disappears, the screen is completely grey (without pink block, see photos) but it will not start the courses

I tried everything, resetting the PRAM, Reset the SMC. I also tried with the other modules DIMM 4, the result is always the same!

Also a form of beginning the USB Stick or the Volume of recovery is not complete to start? I am not able to reformat a reinstallation of the system!

    What could be wrong?

    Any idea?

Hate to say Gerard but it seems that your GPU is dead. If you have any AppleCare has left the machine call them today! If this isn't the case, then you should bring to your local Apple Store or an authorized service provider Apple to get an estimate of how much it will cost to repair. Armed with this information, you can then decide what you want to do.

    Hello

I have reformat my iMac 27 "and re - install EL captain from scratch.

I use a USB keyboard expand.

Because I re - install the El Captain keys from 0 to 9 on the numeric keypad does not work anymore.

I have try the keyboard on another Mac and they work.

I think that there is a 'feature' somewhere to turn off these 10 keys, or to replace their digital function to navigate functions or something like that.

But I do not know how to disable them.

The checkbox "preferences/keyboard/keypad of the system" use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys... is not checked.

  • Reading frames inconsistent stuttering / deleted

Only, I went from a mid 2010 Mac Pro to 27 "new IMac 5 K retina display.  I'm working on a one hour program that started on my MacPro.  He's dead, so I moved the project to my MacBook Pro and IMAC.  Images is a mixture of DVCPRO HD 1080/30i. GoPro 1080/30 & 60 P; HDV; Canon 1080/30 p; stills, old and new, some old small, some major & new shot with guns.  Chronology is 1080/30i.

During playback of the chronology, I get incompatible stuttering in some plans.  Inconsistent because a specific clip can read without problem once, then next time I play there is obvious stuttering.  Play again and the problem will be displayed in a different place in the clip and it may be better or worse.  could start 3 seconds into the clip, maybe 5 or 7.  I first noticed when editing on my laptop, which is a model of retina 15 "with plenty of Ram and the fastest processor I7 nine last year, which is not all that rare.

When I moved to the IMac, I did a transfer of the time machine MacPro, being understood, it may not be the best way to launch new aa machine.  After all the questions, I reformatted the IMAC and started from scratch.  Exact same results.

I drove back from 2014, 8.2 to 7 CC and playback smoothed in some test shots I brought in a new project.  I also tried to export a few minutes of the hardest parts of the timeline in a H264 file and it read smoothly, so, apparently, that the file is not corrupted just reading.  Fortunately I'm not editing with the client, so that the element is mute, but I occasionally customers here and this kind of reading isn't great for show work.

I spent a few days and several hours on the phone with tech support without a solution to the problem.

I also tried the plans incriminated in FCP7 and they reproduce uniformly smooth.  Older DVCPRO HD and HDV clips were captured in FCP7, so I took the first Pro, thinking that for some reason may have been the cause, but the results are the same.

I'm at the end of what some "Wit", I left and would be very grateful for any suggestions on a solution.  Also when I reinstalled my plugins and Prime Minister they are not appearing in PP.  When I look in the library only 7.0 is there with of course my plugins.  How can I get 8.2 to be present.  just add a new folder and drag the plugins from 7 to 8?  Plugins are only creative culture Impatience to feathers.  Boris Continuum 9 Image restoration and Sonicfire Pro.

Determined that it was a hardware problem because stuttering also happened to format Quicktime.  Back Apple's IMac to an Exchange which should arrive next week.  I hope that reading not more jerky.  Exports also played fine.

  • Can't reformat hard drive iMac before recycling 10.6.8 running

How can I reformat my hard drive on an older iMac where I lost the beginning upward and the recovery disks? I'm running OS X 10.6.8 version. Whenever I try to start by now the keys order and R it just starts normally.

Recovery does not work on this computer, unless he qualifies for an update of the firmware.

You will need to get the original installation discs since it's the only way to do it-call Apple and give them your serial number.

Probably put you the folder in the normal position inside the music.  Launch iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and navigate to the iTunes Library.itl file in the folder that you moved.

  • reformatted iMac OS installation

I recently updated my iMac 27 inch end 2015 model.  I have transferred all my files, programs, etc. of my iMac mid-2007 and now need to reformat the disk on the old drive and install Snow Leopard (it's the last OS I have on the drive).  If possible, I then will modernize it to the Mavericks - the last OS that actually worked on this computer.  I made the mistake to upgrade to El Capitan and had nothing but restarts, freezes, the beach ball of death, etc., which hastened to my upgrade.  My question is, how to reformat the hard drive (I assume from the Snow Leopard disc) and then install the OS on that drive.  I've never done this before and I just want to check that it works before giving it to our daughter.

While it is started on the DVD, open disk utility, select all of the disk in the sidebar, erase it and run the Setup program.

    Yes, disable it before uninstalling.

  • Time Machine deleted messages on an external drive to the trash can on iMac are taking place on the hard drive?

I am struggling with a computer, try to empty the trash with 1million 300,000 Time machine backup files. It runs for two days now and won't install. At this rate, I'll need a week before my computer becomes viable. I don't feel able to go to the Terminal to do the trick. Also at this point, I'm afraid to stop the process again... Backups on an external drive of pigs 400 GB on my drive hard imac... I have so little room to work right now. I deleted some 200,000 files already yet the storage on my imac HD has not moved. The files in the Recycle Bin of the external drive really live on my hd now until they will be deleted if all goes well before Christmas?

I have a new computer to come next week so I'm wondering if I'll just reformat my entire hd in my imac to solve this problem... Any ideas?

You do all this in the Finder?

Time Machine has to delete the files from the user interface, normally "browsing Time Machine backup", navigate to the desired folder, and select the option "delete all backups of...» ». This is the approved way that should work.

If you are manually dragging the items in the trash of in a Time Machine backup, it can choke. Time Machine stores data with many levels of access control permissions & Finder seems to have difficulties to remove to empty the trash. In fact, I think that the TM drive has limits to prevent normal users to change data on this disk.

Personally, I think your safest option is to abandon the process, restart, erase and reformat the Time Machine drive. Who will lose all history backups but again in a clean condition seems to be better than trying to manually prune the Time Machine data. Time Machine removes old backups when it is full - so you shouldn't really need to intervene like this anyway.

Wait and see if anyone has a better idea.

P.S., each disk has its own "basket", so doing drag items should not fill your Mac startup disk. Maybe the operating system is out of memory, try to process all the files, exit other applications & see if that changes anything, you may have to wait just if you want to avoid to abandon the process.

  • Erase an iMac of 2008 to give

I try to erase an old iMac to give to friends. It's an iMac 20 inches at the beginning of 2008. I tried to follow the instructions from apple, but I can't go back to the operating system that it had when I bought first it. He keeps insisting on the relocation of El Capitan and using my Apple ID. I need to get at least to a place where a new apple ID could be created and associated with this computer.

I have my OS 10.4 install disc, but it wont let me run. I can not OS X Internet recovery to do something else than trying to reinstall my software. I started upward on an external drive; on a drive flash; erased and reformat the drive many times and I cannot clear the checkpoint.

I am happy to leave El Capitan over there, but I want the machine under my Apple ID.

    Suggestions?

  • Migrate messages from the Macbook Air to new iMac 2012 2016

How can I migrate all my messages (text, iMessage) of my Macbook Air to my new iMac 2012 2016? I have a lot of messages on my laptop and I want to migrate them to my iMac just to have them for reference/memory later. I do this because I would like to activate the monthly updating of message on my iPhone, so he won't have to queue all my messages it years ago and I am also reformat my old Macbook Air. Is there a way to do this? Thank you!

Messages and e-mail accounts and data are found in/Home/Library/Messages/and/Home/Library/Mail/files. Just copy the content to the same folders on the new computer.

Or you can migrate your complete folder from the old computer to the new home. This can be done using the love at first sight between the two cable and on the new computer using target disk Mode use the Migration Wizard to migrate your application. It could also be run from a time Machine or another external backup drive.

Migration will not overwrite any user account that has already been created on the new computer. MY simply creates a new Admin user account name. You will then need to switch to the newly migrated account.

  • iMac won't turn. Startup disk is full. TDM won't let me edit.

iMac won't turn. Startup disk is full. TDM won't let me edit.

My iMac turns off 10 seconds after the start to the top. I tried repair disk running, to no avail. What is happening is because my boot drive is full, off the 500 GB I partitioned in mac, 493,63 GB is taken up. I bought a thunderbolt cable to access the TOC on my mac book, and I have access to my files now. The problem is that I can only copy files. Authorities say I read and write permissions. When I start my host computer, it says "you can still open or copy the files on the disk, but you cannot save changes to the files on the disc. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can. "I'm trying to copy all my files on this computer and remove what I don't want copies, then reinstall OSX on my iMac. The problem is that some files are native to all OSX, so it would prevent me from copying the files. For example, if I want to copy my applications folder, it stops to copy once it reached the app store, because it cannot copy that. It is a problem because when it comes to the library, there are small files in there that I don't know if I can copy, then it stops at the copy and I end up with half of my files and I don't know what I need and what I have.

Everything you need to copy the disk, then start the iMac in recovery (command-R) mode. Wipe the drive and reinstall OS X from the recovery console.
