removal of large size of virtual machine snapshot, esxi 4.0.0 (208167)

Dear Experts,

I am looking for assistance before you do this step, remove the snapshot of a virtual machine (NNMi-Test), 100 GB thick disk has been assigned to this virtual machine when it is created. After the installation of the operating system, we took a snapshot. Explained user had to test something on this one and we wanted as if during the tests of some problem occur due to the facilities at least that we can return to the fresh install of OS snapshot.

After that we missed by mistake that we had seen on this machine. Now I want to delete this single snapshot, but its size is now KB 26,182,660. The current state of the machine, we want to keep, it's OK with us.

I can proceed without fear of deleting, I should say 'remove all' OR 'delete '. Image is attached here with. This machine is the "EVAstorage2" data store and 193 GB is free on this subject.

There is another virtual host below computers run on it, I also need help with clichés:

-machine virtual (NNMi) , assigned to 150 GB thick disk, also have same instant problem has been created and it is now 7.7 GB,.

This machine is on "EVAstorage1" and is 221GB free space

-virtual machine (Bukhari), assigned thick 150 GB, also named snapshot after operating system installation and size soft

this wink, shot is now showing only 128GB

I have attached the images of the three machines I need assistance for: NNMi-Test, NNMi Bukhari

Please note that the Esxi is 4.0.0 (208167)

Please help me and require further details before giving an answer to me, please ask me. Also, keep in mind there are also other virtual machines on the same 'EVAstorage1' and 'EVAstorage2' data with disk available warehouses thin and little with thick disk.

Kind regards

Jocelyn

The GUI seems to check the hard of the last snapshot file in the chain to see if it contains an entry "ddb.thinProvisioned". Because this entry is present in the hard disk basic GUI file guess a thick disc put into service.

I suggest that you remove the snasphot of a single virtual machine at the same time and that after opening hours. Please make sure that there are no application backup or other task that would try to create a snapshot of this machine that performs the erase process.

I wouldn't worry too much about the size of the snapshot or any performance impact, just be patient and wait as the deletion process at the end (which could take a while).

The maximum required temporarily on the disk with a single snapshot is about the size of the snapshot itself more space for a snapshot of assistance, which contains changes to the virtual machine, while the removal is underway.

    Hey Sean,

    I'm not familiar with batch API too many orders, but I'm guessing that you're referring to:

    Turning the power on

    Power off

    As you probably know, there are a lot of API command to power on a set of virtual machines, but there is not one to turn off. It maybe an internal/private API to power off the coast, but I have not heard/seen it.

    If your question is around Steve Jin VI Java API, maybe hit him up on top of this blog, you probably a more precise answer and if this isn't the case, I think he'll be able to help directly as well.

  • ESXi installation before vCenter Server?  How can I get vCenter Server on a virtual machine on ESXi servers?

    My plan for a new vSphere Essentials Plus 5.5 U2a installation is to have the vCenter Server on a virtual machine on the servers of the host on which is installed ESXi.  However, all the installation instructions I found indicate the user to first install the vCenter Server.  How can I get vCenter Server on a virtual machine on ESXi servers?

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi munkyman welcome to communities.

    After you have installed your first ESXi host, open a browser and go to https://your-ESXi-ip-or-FQDN

    You can download the vSphere Client here. It is a windows application that you can install on your desktop. It is often referred to as the "c# Client vSphere" in communities and blog posts, because it is a new implemented in the vCenter Server Web client.

    But for the beginning, install the vSphere Windows Client. You can then launch it and connect directly to your ESXi host. Here you can create your first virtual machine, which can be the VM vCenter (installation of Windows or device, that is you).

    You can use the web client or connect to the Server with the client c# vSphere vCenter VCenter runs.

  • We focus on virtual machine snapshots in the company

    VMware Greetings fellow pilgrims,

    I am trying to build policies and procedures around snapshots of virtual machine VMware and would like to know your opinion in regard to best practices and how long snapshots are in place before removing. And what is snapshots maximum numbers that you feel must be taken for each machine.

    The goal of my research is to integrate this policy into a service level agreement and preserve the integrity of the system for the virtual machine and the infrastructure that it runs on. I worked in a few environments were a VM had several snapshots that were months old and 60 to 80 GB in size. When I confirmed that snapshots are no longer needed and was given the ok to remove it took almost 24 hours and he had an impact on the performance of the system for the virtual machine and of course the ESX Server was running. I look forward to your responses and opinions of value. Thank you for your support.

    So far, here's what I came with.

    Maximum number of snapshots by machine = 3

    Duration that lasts a snapshot before deletion = 5 days

  • Edit a VMDK with another virtual machine snapshots?

    I have a virtual machine that has snapshots 4. I want to temporarily detach the boot drive, attach it to a different VM, extend the partition and finally relate to the original virtual machine. Can I attach the original VMDK file, or can I join < name > VM - 00000X.vmdk file?

    You just want to change the size of the partition you want to resize the virtual disks?

    In case you want to resize the virtual disks, you must not have any instant assets! In case you just want to change the partition structure in a virtual disk without changing its size, then use the snapshot active (the last one in the chain).

    Always keep in mind that snapshots are used as a chain, each link in the chain is active!

  • The Exchange 2010 on Esxi 5.0 virtual machine snapshot

    Dear Experts,

    We have Exchange 2010 VM under windows 2008 R2 on Esxi 5.0. I need to make the updates of windows on this machine. I want to inform if it is okay to take instant Exchange 2010 machine before performing windows updates and then delete the snapshot once the updates are performed successfully, OR it is not good to go for the snapshot and back problems due to the behavior of the application exchange 2010 I/O.

    Please let know us your opinion.

    Kind regards

    Jocelyn

    But by the way in this case once the updates are successful and we want to remove the snapshot that we took earlier by turning off the virtual machine, to remove again he must turn off the Exchange 2010 VM?

    No, you don't have to. turn off the functions of the virtual machine as a precaution to ensure that you capture a consistent instant State of the virtual machine and it is the system of files/databases, in the cases where you may need to restore the virtual computer. It is not necessary when the snapshot is deleted.

    Towards the end of the removal of snapshot operation, the virtual machine will be soon stun/unstunned to merge the last exceptional blocks into the basic disk. This basically any time a break the VM to stop him from delivering IO and the creation of delta data more, but it's transparent to the client (similar to a vMotion). You can see a loss of ping or two, or clusters of DAG can initiate a failover the virtual machine is a little inaccessible, but it should be no. impact on or be heard by the customer.

    Merging delta of the snapshot in the basic disk can take a long time, depending on how big the delta grew at the same time and the amount of data continues to be changed upon removal. The process will put some additional IO load on the storage, so I recommend you usually do the delete operation during off-peak hours. Also, make sure that you have enough free space on the data store to meet the growth of delta file.

    If we don't take any snapshot for this virtual machine, we can also directly proceed the updates of windows as we do in the event of physical Exchange Server, right?

    Yes, there is no difference for physical systems in this regard.

  • Size of Virtual Machine in the Finder is Double the size of virtual machine in Fusion

    I run a virtual disk of Windows 7 Home Premium to professional Fusion 5.0.2; the host operating system is 10.8.2. The sparse disk size is set to 40 GB. After the Windows defragmentation and cleanup of the virtual machine, Fusion 5 General preferences pane indicates the total size of the VM as 33.2 GB. I have not instant. The problem is that the size of the virtual machine, as shown in the Finder is 70,56 GB. My offsite backup drive is full and I'm trying to reduce the size of the backup set. How can I reduce the size of the virtual machine, as shown in the Finder to match the size of the virtual machine as shown in the merger? Thank you.

    According to the files in the folder and the newspapers, it seems that there is a problem with the (assumingly in October 2011) virtual machine and the virtual machine was back on the basic disk, making useless existing snapshot!

    What you can do - make sure that you have a full backup - is to properly close the virtual machine, and then move all files from snapshots (files hard with 00000 x in their file name) to another folder and power on the virtual machine again. If this works as expected you can delete obsolete files.

  • several large files on Virtual Machines

    I checked my drive with OmniDiskSweeper space today and saw that virtual machines takes a huge part of my (about 11 GB) disk space. Windows 7 x64.vmwarevm I find several files named Windows 7 x 64-s, followed by a long number of three digits (s001 s005 and s016). Each of them is 2 GB.

    Are these duplicates? If so, are they safe to delete?

    In my Finder window, it appears as a large file of 12 GB

    Thank you!

    Absolutely not!  Do not delete these files!  Also I strongly suggest that you stay out of the packaging of the Virtual Machine unless you really know what you are doing!   If you want to free up disk space then turn off AutoProtect, if it is turned on and then delete all the snapshots then Clean Up a virtual hard drive.

  • What are the limits of size of virtual machine to use the mode of transport NBD in VADP?

    We have some problem to run backup VADP with EMC² Networker 7.6.2 with a virtual machine which, in total, amounts to about 2.3 TB of data.

    Yes, I think it's the best option, visitors don't like the 'limits' much, then maybe look into the SAN transport mode

    VirtualMachineFileLayout a lot of files like snapshots, configuration files, log files. I have not found any object determine the size of them, but the VI Client GUI shows the sizes of them.

    Is there a VI SDK objects that provide the size of every file?

    The virtual machine, you can find warehouses of data associated with (ownership of the data store). Each data store, you can find the HostDatastoreBrowser corresponding (the property browser). HostDatastoreBrowser object, you can call SearchDatastore_Task() or SearchDatastoreSubFolders_Task.

    When you call one of the methods, a task object is returned. To the success of the task, check the property info.result of the task, the object of HostDatastoreBrowserSearchResults actual result is there. Discover the FileInfo objects - they include sizes and lately of the modified files.

    What file system of the disk external drive is formatted with?  If FAT32 and your Vista VM was created using a monolithic virtual disk, then it does not, as a maximum of FAT32. the size of the file to slightly less than 4 GB.  You must use the format of 2 GB drive - Split for your virtual disks, if you want to have these files on a drive to FAT32 format.

    Run this doesn't give any errors, but are still all NICs.

    Is there a way to easy or better for this script?

    You must create an entry in the DeviceChange property by the device you wish to reconfigure.

    Try something like this

    $VMs = Get-VM test*

    $NICs = 1..6 | %{"Network Adapter $_"}$i = 0

    foreach($VM in $VMs){  $spec = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineConfigSpec  $Adapters = Get-NetworkAdapter -VM $VM|?{$_.NetworkName -like "dummy"}  foreach($Adapter in $Adapters){    if($NICs -contains $Adapter){      $devSpec = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualDeviceConfigSpec      $devSpec.operation = "remove"      $devSpec.device += $Adapter.ExtensionData      $spec.deviceChange += $devSpec    }  }  $VM.ExtensionData.ReconfigVM_Task($spec)}

  • Remove a NIC vCloud several virtual machines

    Hello

    I am a vCO and extremely raw newbie with JavaScript (a great combination).  My production environment consist of vCenter 5.0, 5.1 and 5.1 vCO vCD. I have the plugin installed vCD and running with Orchestrator.  I am trying to build a workflow that removes NIC1 (NIC 1) of a series of vCloud VMs.  I took a copy of the vCloud Director Library Workflow (remove a NETWORK adapter) and edited the virtual machines of an input parameter to be an array / vCloud:VM.  I modified the taks script so that it loops through the virtual machines in the array and returns their network adapters.  It seems that the network cards are returned as a UID (I have this return to the screen via a System.Log).  This UID is obviously not with that I entered to the workflow runtime - I said "NIC 1" and my workflow will fail with an error "no primary network connection exists; majorErrorCode = 400; minorErrorCode = BAD_REQUEST; vendorSpecificErrorCode = null; (Workflow: remove a NIC 1 / remove the NIC (item0) #22) " Here is the code I use: .

    If (vm. Status! = VclVMStatus.POWERED_OFF.value) {}
    throw "VM is not off."
    }
    var found = false;
    var len = vms.length;
    for (var i = 0; i < len; i ++)
    {
    var VM = vms [i];
    network var cards = VM.getNetworkCards ();
    System.log (NICS);
    var newNics = new Array();
    for (i = 0; i < nics.length; i ++) {}
    If (. itemResource.elementName.value NIC [i]! = nicName) {}
    newNics.push (nics [i]);
    } else {}
    found = true;
    }
    }
    If (! found) {}
    throw 'Invalid NIC name';
    }
    task = VM.updateNetworkCards (newNics);
    }

    As I mentioned earlier, I am a complete newb to vCO\JavaScript and would be really grateful for some input\advice.  If there is a better method to remove the NIC 1 to a litany of vCloud VMs, or if someone has already developed a workflow for this, I would be very grateful for your help.

    Thank you

    Try this:

    var section = vm.getNetworkConnectionSection();
    System.log("Primary card was NIC : " + section.primaryNetworkConnectionIndex);
    section.primaryNetworkConnectionIndex = 1;
    task = vm.updateSection(section);

    He's worked here.
