Requirements for a good restoration of a vCenter 4.1

Dear users,

I plan to upgrade our vCenter 4.1 to 5.0 and my checks and documentation are saying that the upgrade will succeed, but I also want to assure you that I have a backup/restore good plan ready in case of disaster.
I discovered that there is much to find online, but because it offers great and many different version, one speaks of is it hard to say what guidelines are good to follow for someone like me who doesn't have a lot of experience with VMware.

So I thought that we will make a topic and put all the information that I have and that perhaps you users could check if my backup/restore strategy is over or I'm missing something and that you are willing to help me a helping hand in the present.

My server information:
-Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise
-64-bit operating system
-Databases located on the same server
-Microsoft SQL Server 2005

Backup and documentation
1. I've got a backup of two databases
-VIM_UMDB
-VIM_VCDB

2. I have a backup of the following SSL folder:
C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\SSL

3. I have a backup of the following vpxd.cfg folder:
C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter

4. I stand cd Windows installation, vCenter and MS - SQL

5 SQL Servername:
Servername\SQLEXP_VIM

6 SQL authentication:
Windows authentication

Missing points?
-I see people talking at different locations on the backup of the SSL Certification, but one that is good?
R: C:\Program Files (x 86) \VMware\Infrastructure\Update Manager\SSL
B: C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\SSL
C: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware virtual Center\SSL\

-I see people talk as the record sysprep, it needed backup for a good restoration, and what place is this acute issue?

-What should I do with the Manager to update exactly because I do not understand what to do with it?

Fast easy step how I intend to restore our vCenter
1. install Windows
2. install SQL
3. replace the databases in the SQL
4. install the vCenter, and then point to SQL databases
5. run vSphere to log

One thing you don't mention, is whether or not the vCenter and SQL servers are physical or virtual.  So I just did the clones and took backups vRanger connection before you start the upgrade mine are virtual.

Why MS SQL server is required for installing vcenter?

You need a database to contain the vCenter Server information. It may be SQL/Oracle. By default, an installation of SQL Express happens if you do not want to install a complete SQL Server blown - it will have maximum but limits work for smaller infrastructure.

    Exact wording of the documentation:

vCenter Server and vCenter Update Manager require databases to store and organize the data from the server.

Each instance of vCenter server must have its own database. vCenter Server instances cannot share the same database schema. Several databases of vCenter Server can reside on the same database server, or they can be split between multiple database servers. Databases Oracle, who have the notion of schema objects, you can run several unique vCenter Server instances in a database server if you are the owner of a different pattern for each instance of vCenter server, or use a server of Oracle database dedicated for each instance of vCenter server.

You don't need to install a new server database for the vCenter Server installation to work. During installation, you can point the vCenter Server system for the supported existing databases. vCenter Server supports IBM DB2, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases. vCenter Update Manager supports Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases. For a list of supported database server versions, see the vSphere compatibility tables tohttp://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.pdf on the VMware vSphere documentation Web site.

  • New disk recovery is required for my Equium A100-338

    Hi all

I've had my laptop for a good few years now and I need to use the recovery disc, the problem is that the disc is scratched to hell and Toshiba say I must pay £29.99 for a replacement disk, which is a little steep.

My question is Toshiba has a replacement policy of the disks scratched if it isn't that how all the drivers and pre-installed software back, I have no problem with the help of my parents vista install DVD that is available for 3 machines, but I want all software and stuff that is loaded on the recovery disk.

Any ideas on how I can do this

When you buy Toshiba laptop (old model), you will get a disk to restore DVD facilities.
If this disk is destroyed and cannot be used you can get a new one, but is not free.

So, you have the choice of ordering a new or install a clean operating system.
Recovery image recorded on recovery facilities disc contains following software:
    -Operating system
    -All drivers
    -Utilities and specific tools Toshiba
-Some other software such as a DVD player or application antivirus (trial version)

In my opinion, you should install own OS. All the drivers, Toshiba tools and utilities that you can download from the Toshiba support page - http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com

It is quite the same as on the recovery image. DVD player is not important, and you can download free very good VLC player. As an antivirus application I recommend Avira antivir.

I highly recommend that you do not have it.

Registry cleaning programs are all snake oil. Cleaning of the
registration is not necessary and is dangerous. Let alone register and
do not use any registry cleaner. Despite what many people think, and
What software record cleaning suppliers are trying to convince you,
have unused registry entries is not really make you hurt.

The risk of a serious problem caused by a registry cleaner by mistake
delete an entry you need is much greater than any potential benefit
    It can have.

Let me stress that neither me nor anyone else who warns the
use of registry cleaners never said that they always cause
problems. If they have always caused problems, they would disappear from
the market almost immediately. Many people have used a registry
cleaner and never had a problem with it.

The problem with a registry cleaner is that it carries with it
the risk of a significant problem. And since there is no
benefits of using a registry cleaner, running that risk is a very bad
    good deal.

  • Files which are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions

I get this window popping up that reads, "files required for Windows to run correctly have been replaced by unrecognized versions.»  To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files.  Insert your Windows XP Professional CD2 now. "The problem is that I'm not running XP Professional.  I am running XP Media Edition (do not know what version - when I look at 'System' in the control panel it says version 2002, but the OS disc that came with my computer says version 2005 with update rollup 2).  In any case, I only have an installation disc, and when I insert it, the computer tells me it's the wrong disc.  What should I do?

    God help us all...

Is the CD you have an XP bootable installation CD authentic or some kind of restore CD provided with your system (they are not the same thing).  If it's a CD of Windows, this Service Pack is on the CD?

Describe your current antivirus and software anti malware situation: McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, MSE, Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc..

If the system works, what do you think might have changed since the last time it did not work properly?

What is your Service Pack installed?  If you are not sure, do the following:

Click Start, run and enter in the box:

    Msinfo32

Click on OK and when the system info summary appears, click on Edition, select all, copy, and then paste the results here.

There will be some personal information (such as the user name and the name of the system), and what appears to be personal information for you, simply delete the personal information of the pasted information.

When you see a message like this:

    Windows file protection
Files which are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions.  To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these files.

I hope that you are curious to know what is the file and when you know that, you can decide what to do about it.

You must click Cancel, and then click Yes to keep the file, then you will have an event to watch which will tell you what the problem is the file.

Search where you sign in to see what is the name of file system Viewer, then decide what to do.

The event will look something like in this example:

    Event type: Information
    Event source: Windows File Protection
    Event category: no
    Event ID: 64005
    Date: 10/01/2011
    Time: 14:41:56
    Description:
The protected system file taskmgr.exe had not been restored in its original, valid version because the Windows File Protection restoration process was cancelled by user interaction, user name is Jose.  The file version of the bad file is unknown.

When you know what the file is, you can decide what to do about it.  There are probably other copies of the files on your system, or you can get the files from another source.

A shortcut to the event viewer is to click on start, run and enter in the box:

    eventvwr.msc

Click OK to launch the event viewer.

Check your event observer system log and look for a proposed Windows file protection event.

If you double-click on an event, it will open a window of properties with more information.  On the right are black up and down arrow keys to scroll through the open events. The third button that looks like two overlapping pages is used to copy the details of the event in your Windows Clipboard.

When you find an interesting event that occurred at the time of your question, click on the third button at the top and arrows to copy the details and then you can paste the details (right click, paste or CTRL-V) the text in detail here for analysis.  Remove all personal information from your information after you paste If you are forced to do so.

P.S. Let us know how you go with these Microsoft KB article suggestions.

  • Trying to remove the folders from Windows one system empty, but in error "is a Windows system folder and is required for Windows work.» It cannot be deleted. »

My parents bought a laptop from a friend, and recently my father ran an antivirus program that came with multiple files in a folder that has been created by this friend. When you try to delete the folder a box appears that says "it is a Windows system folder and is required for Windows work.» It cannot be deleted. "But all the folders inside are empty and of no use to us. Help?

The standard answer to questions that begin with «I bought a used computer...» "is you can do a clean install of Windows, because you know not what could be hiding somewhere in the computer.  In this case, it seems as if he is infected with something.

Legally, the seller was required to give you a way to do this reinstall, but in the vast majority of the private sales of used computers, this requirement is simply ignored.

If it's a laptop to 'mark' (e.g., Dell, HP, IBM/Lenovo) there may be a hidden partition on the hard drive that can be used to restore the computer to its "fresh from the factory" State.  Of course, this will remove all applications that the previous owner had installed after he or she has bought new, but you should still seriously to consider making such a restore, if the mechanism is available.

What is the name and the version of the antivirus application that has detected the wrong files?
What are the names of the files?
What is the name of the folder that cannot be deleted?
Are you logged on as a user with the rights "computer administrator" when you try to delete it?

Assuming that you can not or will not do a clean install of Windows, I suggest the following (do not run scans at the same time, each analysis may take some time, depending on the number of files on the computer):

Connect as a user with the privileges "computer administrator" and do a full scan with each of the following:

    http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner
    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx (requires download)
http://www.PCtipp.ch/downloads/Sicherheit/35905/multi_av_scanning_tool.html (page is in German, but the downloaded scanner is in English)

Also download, install, update and run a scan complete with each of the following:

    MalwareBytes AntiMalware
    SUPERAntiSpyware

A CD came with the computer and I don' t know how, or if I can use the i386 at this stage. contains WINNT i386. EXE, and WINNT32.exe indicating me a full copy of the system.
