Restore from Windows.old

Vista has stopped working so I reloaded Vista from my recovery disc.  All my applications are lost but it created Windows.old.  When I "right click" Windows.old one option is to restore a previus version.  If I restore it will be just restore to a version that is broken and will not work?

Similarly there are instructions on the terminology of the MS site to "restore a computer to a previous Windows Installation.  Again, the question is it just refers to a broken version of windows.

I have deally I want is restore my apps and my documets to the new working version of Vista.  Is this possible?

Hello

with windows.old you can only retrieve data; If accessible

We do not know what are the damage caused to your system causing you to reinstall vista or if the data can be extracted

programs need to be reinstalled from the original, CD, DVD media, etc.

  • How to transfer old data from windows.old in my system update?

    Hello community,

I tried to update my Windows 7 Ultimate RC on a version of Windows 7 Professional from MSDNAA. Unfortunately, all my data that I really need is now in the windows.old folder.
    1. is it possible to transfer to the new system (including drivers and system entries) so I don't have to do it manually?
    OR
    2. can I get back to my old version? I'd rather have the return as a non-RC-Windows data.

    Thank you for answering,
    Julius

    Hello Jules, welcome.

I would recommend that you take a look at these steps here. Please make a backup of important files in your operating system current and all what you find important in directories Windows.old before trying this manual restoration of the BONES.

  • Is it safe to restore the Windows.old folder?

    BACKGROUND:

I have a Dell Studio 540 in Windows Vista Ultimate which suddenly crashed, then wouldn't restart, saying: "no available boot device." Apparently, the hard drive boot sector had been corrupted. After of the painstaking efforts to save as many as possible training and have unsuccessfully using CHKDSK or Seagate tools to repair the drive, I finally resorted to a clean reinstall using the Dell OEM Windows Vista reinstallation disc. I chose the option to move all old files/folders in a folder Windows.old and I am now able to start Windows. However, all settings prerequisites, programs, files and folders from the previous installation are still in the Windows.old folder. For now, I run a full CHKDSK again (and he says 'Corrupt file attribute Deleting the file record segment X X' so I hope that some repairs happens)...
But what I would do, if possible and if it will not cause problems, use the instructions in this MS support article "how to restore a computer to a previous Windows installation after you install Windows Vista." But before I do that, my question is the following:
    QUESTION:
If I had to do a reinstall of Vista due to damage/corruption of the hard drive, and if all what information has been moved to the folder Windows.old during this process, is it possible that restore the folder Windows.old to the previous installation would restore any damage/corruption existed, thus causing the problem to return or make things worse? Or should I not worry about the restoration of the old "problem"?

    Hello

You can use the restore feature if the previous installation was good.

It is not in your case; If this isn't an option for you.

You can use the windows.old folder to retrieve your data.

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/932912

But the programs must be reinstalled form the original media.

And when you're done with the windows.olf folder you can delete.

"How to use the disk cleanup feature to delete the Windows.old folder after you install Windows Vista"

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/930527

And it is perhaps an idea to run Dell Diagnostics and eventually replace your drive hard if it comes up with errors.

  • Edge 14 "questions making factory restore from Windows 8 consumer overview

My edge initially provided with Windows 7, and I created a USB drive recovery using the tool supplied with the laptop. Last year, I put Windows 8 preview of consumers about it. Now, Windows 8 license has expired and I don't want to upgrade to the professional version. So I tried to do a factory restore. I tried:

    1. start > enter > I can't see F11 here, there're only ESC, F1 and F12 to choose.

    2. plug USB Recovery > start > enter > F12 > I see my USB in the list > select and enter > system continue to start with Win 8.

    3. Similarly, choose F1 to enter BIOS, put my USB on the top of the boot order list > save and restart with connected USB > system continue to start with Win 8.

    The content of my usb looks like: usb.tag / winRE.wim / Boot folder (283.9 M in total). It's called imation, 1 G.

I wonder what I can try to take the step of recovery plant. Any help will be great!

I solved this problem by creating the boot on CD instead. Then start successfully from the CD instead of USB.

the only problem is that I got an error "you can have only one copy of the Microsoft Windows operating system." The product Recovery Media Creator will leave now. "because I previously created the recovery on a USB key. Follow this post to continue:

    Hello

Are you able to browse the disc and see the files after you insert the disc in the drive?

    (a) Insert the CD in the computer.

    (b) double click on computer and select the CD/DVD drive.

If you are able to see the files, you can copy and paste the files.

If you can't see the files, then there is no other options left to fix the problem.

  • New files are moving in Windows.Old

I have a laptop of HP 6930 (second hand) under Win 7 Home Premium which is my "new" computer Previous was a Lenovo laptop running XP. The store where I bought the HP deleted the Lenovo HD permissions and transferred to a new case, so I could access it via the USB port on the HP.

I also transferred the Lenovo Mozy backup to my RESUME, I thought that the two went to a new folder. But it seems that some files go in the Windows.Old.

I noticed today when I ran disk cleanup. I saw a box "windows.old" and was about to check it and changed his mind. I went to this folder and noticed new files in there.

Is it possible to remove or gray on the option delete Windows.old from disk cleanup? There was no option like that on the XP version of disk cleanup.

This number is part of my problems to move to a new computer.

I want to continue using many files and folders from the Lenovo, for various reasons.

Is it possible to merge or move some files and folders from Windows.Old to the new files and folders on the HP?

  • Windows 8 regenerate damage problem/backup duplicate and what is this "Windows.old"?

    Greetings!

Currently, I'm new with Windows 8 and more than 3 months, I noticed my laptop is more slower to start-I recently installed the Adobe Suite as my largest software, as well as other essentials if you're curious.

So, I just tried the good old system restore to see if the unknown blunders can be cancelled. Unfortunately, without success, I decided to update the system.

Unfortunately once more after refreshing, the registry has been cleaned, but my software is still present in the neighbouring internal disk drive. At the same time, disk space in the disk drive that contains the operating system seems to have been mysteriously consumed (to about 40 GB free to only 15 GB free)

Do you have any explanation and the solution to this? I would be very grateful for a quick response.
    Thank you for your time.

    --------------------EDIT-------------------------
So I found the duplication - there is a 'Windows.old' containing my old system to front. Haha, what a relief

Now, my questions are, 1) is it possible to be able to use/activate this beyond the parameters of operating system (from windows.old) again? (2) is it safe to upload it like any other normal folder (windows.old)? (3) is it safe to just manually remove my software (because it is devoid of its registers) and reinstall them again? Or you guys can even have the best solution for this.

    Any answer would be welcome.
Thank you in advance to those who have an overview on this :)
