Rn104 NAS

Hello

I am looking to buy a NAS RN104, and I was wondering I have several hard drives with data then and when they are installed in the nas data drive will remain and can be used

or the Nas will have to reformat the drive to read.
The current drive I have are the NTFS file format and I don't want to lose the data that is on it when I put them in the sin.

And it is also possible to have 4 separate readers?

Thanks in advance

Peter

The SIN you will need to format the disk, so make sure that your backup is up-to-date first.

Yes, if you turn off X-RAID and destroy (erases all data) the volume by default, you can create a separate for each disk volume.

When you use a separate volume for each disc, it is still more important than is the case to save regularly. With volumes not redundant if a disk crashes, you will lose all data on the volume using this drive.

  • series of 100 ReadyNas rn104 principle capacity hard drive

    Hello

    Hello

I think the RN104 and others in support of this range of NAS drives up to 8 TB of capacity.

Note that default RAID is used, so unless you did something to change this, do not not the capability of your NAS as simply being the sum of all your disks. I think, when RAID is enabled, you can expect to 'lose' capactity as a "tax RAID" 1 Road (StephenB thank you for a very reasonable period). Things become a little more complicated when you start mixing disks of different capacities.

  • RN104 - problem of "Delete inactive volumes to use the disc." #27199519

I have what seems to be similar to many other questions.

I have a RN104 with two 2 TB drives using X-RAID RAID 1 (mirror). I also activated the encryption. A couple of days, we had a power outage and the ReadyNAS close.

I plugged the USB with the encryption key and he started upward but am now getting the error "delete inactive volumes to use the disk. Drive #1,2 '. And we can access is no longer the actions that have been setup on the NAS.

All the suggestions/help? We are out of the period of our support.

Just to close the loop and maybe help someone else who is having a problem, here is what he has done for me.

I end up paying for support, however ultimately my problem was that when I copied/pasted the encryption key from our secure and saved on the USB password manager, the key had a newline character hidden line the end of it (an artifact of the copy/paste from the password manager) which was originally not to be able to decrypt the volume. I had to use a hex editor to view and delete the character that is hidden at the end of the key, then my volume was fine. So, if you have the above error AND you use an encrypted volume AND you have copied/pasted your encryption key from another source to a USB key, check the key for you ensure that no character hidden inside.

I had a problem of tracking where we couldn't access or connect to one of the actions. Support has fixed this issue for me, the samba configuration file was empty, for some reason, support it repaired and we are back in business.

  • "There is no media available to read" error when I access new folders on my RN104 using my WDTV

Story: I bought a WDTV about a year back so that I can copy all my DVDs on my RN104, and then put the DVD in the loft.

The last time I gott it works (after many hours!) but the movie was very nervous, I just so stressed out in the end, I decided to leave.

I tried again a few days back and somehow they are transmitted continuously smooth - no idea why, maybe theres been a firmware update since then or my WDTV has catalogue records, but they worked as I wanted to then.

In any case, I got rather excited and started to copy my DVD to my RN104 reuse MakeMKV.

I managed to copy a bit more than one evening, I checked I could play via WDTV and everything seemed fine.

The next day, I used the same computer to copy DVDs more to my RN104, now when I try to play these movies "there is no media available for playback.

I'll put my hands up and admit that I push some of the menus in the RN104 but I don't think I changed anything.

I found a few sites offering patches, but these that seem to all take care of the people storing movies on a PC not a SIN or they talk about menus that my WDTV isn't appearing any more - something about re-scan the drive seemed promising, but I can't find it in my menus.

I did some research with my setup and found that it has something to do with the issues and not the files.

If I copy a film one of my new records that showed the error in a file like that I can access, I'm able to play.

I thought to delete the folders, I couldn't access and just make new, but all new files that I create, I am unable to access.

I'm guessing this has something to do with permissions on folders, I played with the settings but I'm really not very good with this stuff and I'm worried, I'm just going to make things worse!

    Any help is appreciated!

    Additional:

I found if I copy a folder that I can access and rename the WDTV is happy to access.

Also is it just new folders, I create.

I could technically just copy a folder that works and use it as a model, but if there is a solution I'd rather!

Do not worry, I worked on what was the probelem:

I had checked 'specify the authorization when a new file/folder is created. Otherwise inherit the parent authorization"in"Default"settings"File access"on the NAS.

I unchecked that box and everything started working again.

  • Slow drive QNAP NAS

    Hello

I mounted the SIN of QNAP (TS - 451, 4 x 3 TB WD RED, RAID-5) on network Giga ethernet (using unmanned giga ethernet switch hubs). However, the speed of file transfer is slow and he cuts every time.

I use IMAC 27 "with the latest MAC updates.

I tried to mount the drive smb/afs and its still slow in both types of mounting.

    Any suggestion please?

    Thank you.

OS X does not support the NAS technology. You must contact the NAS developers for support on their product. The first thing I would recommend you do well that must ensure the NAS software that you have installed is designed to work with the version of Mac OS X installed. If not then check with the developers to see if they have updates.

This means, at any time your account to update or upgrade the operating system on your computer, check with the NAS developers to ensure that they support this update before the update of the OS.

  • iTunes Ripping from CD to NAS

Hi there, apologies as I'm sure this has been answered in some form several times but I can't find too specific a question (s). I have a MacBook (OSX) and a DLINK NAS talk to one another. I would like to ship ripping my CD collection, so I have digital versions available, allowing me to use a number of services (iTunes, Sonos etc.), with files on the NAS itself.

What setting should I before I start?

    1. Change iTunes to MP3 format extraction
    2. ITunes library update location on NAS where ripped files will be made available
    3. Configure iTunes to watch the entire where my audio files will be, or create a separate folder "library only" and somehow configure if it has a few shortcuts to real files?
    4. Anything else?

In short, I want to make sure I'll keep that a copy of the file to save space as well assume that I need to extract the files directly on the NAS. Then iTunes media library should just look at these files, so there is no drop iTunes and double files?

I have probably explains this very badly indeed but eager to make sure that I'm going on the right foot and make a beautiful torn library located on my NAS, but just once!

    Thanks in advance!

Everyone likes the idea of SIN, Sonos, etc., but in reality, iTunes and NAS don't like each other and can cause unexpected problems. Not always, but when it happens, you'll be one very unhappy announcement back here.

The format to which tear you depends on the size of the file to which you are ripping applications are you your other devices and to a certain extent.  For speeds of 128 k or less get you better quality of AAFC.

If you continue to use the SIN, you can move the entire library to it.  Copy the entire folder iTunes from iTunes to the NAS, then launch iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and select the iTunes Library.itl file in the folder on the NAS.  The NAS will have to be awake and active before launching iTunes or iTunes will forget the location and you will need to reset it.

From this moment the only things stored on your computer will be the backups of the iPhone and some files in iTunes preferences.

Make sure that you keep backups of the library on the NAS.  We can one day you'll start things and discover all your track lists point to very different files and you will LOVE your backup at this stage because dealing with by other means will require 30 positions.

  • Installation of iTunes, Synology NAS,

I can get a good guide on how to use my 716 + NAS synology, to store all my music files, and when I open itunes on my iMac, MacBook air, or windows laptop or even when I use AppleTV, I can access this music (if it is not stored locally on my computer)?

Also, I tried this in the past, but with itunes on my iMac to restart, it would never ride my share, so he always missed the location default library itunes (locally) and mess substance upward.

I see also synology has an Itunes Server package, that would be a solution?

    Thank you

First, be aware that there are no rare posts here on NAS problems with iTunes.  NAS is great conceptually, but in execution of problems that can occur with iTunes and have done so for more than a decade.  Everyone makes fingers to everyone, but the main thing is that you always run a risk of a library mutilated.  Better is to use a simple external drive and use the NAS for backup.

I think the server package is pretending to be a shared library iTunes without having an active version of iTunes open at the time.  Have you read the manual or online for the NAS documentation? I don't have one and what I know is people post questions here.

The reason why you had problems before is your SIN is going to sleep and not wake up before launching iTunes.  The same thing would happen even if you use a simple external hard drive.  If it doesn't happen at startup, you can try to put an alias to the iTunes on the server application, then an alias to this alias in your computer and start iTunes this way, not directly from the computer.

  • Time Machine NAS RAID

Goal: large, reliable Time Machine back-up.

(No purpose: archiving.) I do that separately on optical carriers per year, double copies, which goes off site. I understand that optical media can degenerate over time - even if some are marketed as "of archive-quality" - and therefore based on a cloud of archiving is the way to go but for now he takes too much bandwidth and I'm worried about security. I recently got a burner external blu - ray: exceptional.)

Question: can I use RAID for Time Machine if I connect by USB directly on my computer?

Issue 1: reliability external drive. This has happened twice that I bought a property, brand, large external hard drive and was prematurely fail at a difficult time. My local computer guru said "it happens" and is "unpredictable" and just buy a new one, most won't. Or, for better quality, get a NAS - network attached storage that can be attached, they have the temperature control, mine is a RAID 2 discs, so there is that the degree of redundancy - but not, I learn, protect against a corrupt Time Machine backup and that can happen, or power increases (although it is on a high-tech power bar) , or theft, etc.

Problem 2: using NAS, which I connected to a Terminal Airport Express via an Ethernet cable - if connected to the computer by WiFi - the Time Machine backup becomes a "sparsebundle" (set of files, in fact), encrypted file with password (?) drive access. However, this was work and I did a full restore of your data (no 'system') the other day with Migration Wizard when I got a new hard drive installed in my old iMac (also upgraded at the time of 10.9 to 10.11). It took over all night, but the wonder of wonders, it chugged along and finished and seems fine. (I have not checked tens of thousands of files individually!)

(My SIN explicitly supports Time Machine, and I checked that box in the configuration of the SIN, and it seemed to work.) I didn't have to leave the mounted drive. Time Machine found hourly and used invisibly in the background.)

Problem 3: I have rename my hard drives for some reason any and do not remember quite what its name was. I wonder if this is part of my problem (read more). But there is a method in Time Machine to 'Browse other discs of backup. " I was looking for a file that I kept outside my usual login "user" and so had not been returned when I used Migration Assistant for data recovery only.

However, when I do this, then nothing is there. I've learned that sometimes, with an encrypted sparsebundle, wireless backup, you will have to let Time Machine sit for a few minutes before the back-ups start to appear, but now, with my new hard drive (with a new name) and the new version of the OS, there is simply nothing; just 'today' that shows only my current hard drive status. Obviously, there was something, or Migration Assistant wouldn't have worked, but during the inspection of the backup via Time Machine, the file seems to be here (whatever_my_computer - name_was.sparsebundle), but it is empty.

If I just try to navigate in the Finder to the sparsebundle NAS Time Machine, I can find it but not to open it. Double click: nothing happens. It is not that I forgot to connection settings, this is what it do not ask me for them.

This happened to me twice and the first time was the day after archiving (luck and good planning) and I thought that it is a kind suddenly lucky, but now it happened again.

So, I tried a bit of searching and not found a clear answer to my question above. I do not see these links:

    TEM http://www.petemarovichimages.com/2013/11/24/Never-use-a-RAID-As-Your-Backup-sys.

    https://support.Apple.com/en-CA/HT201250

    https://discussions.Apple.com/thread/7448896?start=0 & tstart = 0

    https://discussions.Apple.com/thread/5849068?TSTART=0

Of them, it seems that a NAS that has an explicit ability to Time Machine might work (mine did), but is not fully functional, not approved by Apple and is completely unpredictable. My limits are described above. (I work around them).

However, moving forward: I have this RAID 2 discs sitting around, seemingly more reliable than a drive external non-temperature controlled, and I wonder about the connection by USB directly on my computer. What is the downside of this? That is my question. Who will 'normally' work as a Time Machine backup external drive?

Another option is to get two large external hard drives and the value of Time Machine to switch between the two. I have not tried, but apparently it was possible for the last iterations little Mac OS X.

I have important data that requires careful management.

    Thank you all,

    Charles

I use a direct attached Drobo (it is a very easy to use RAID device).

I've always had problems with Time Machine on the network, so I stopped using it in this way. I've never had problems with the TimeMachine and direct-attached storage.

With the Drobo if a disk goes bad, I buy a replacement and hot it swap for the failed drive.

  • Disorganized iTunes Media after moving to NAS

    Hello

I have moved my iTunes for Synology NAS library and am maintaining the logical structure of the different media files.

On the NAS, I created volume 'Media' where I moved to the iTunes library and where I want all kinds of media to reside and to share with others (Synology, Plex) apps. This volume is now the default iTunes media folder.

I have relinked the library in ITunes without problem and can see everything as before, but when for example I am adding new content to music to iTunes (with 'Keep media' and 'Copy media in the iTunes folder') organized checked it lands directly in the 'media' instead of ' Media /Music"." Why and how can I solve this problem?

I want to keep the structure of file like this:

    Media (volume)

    -Music

    -Artist name

    -Album name

    -Movies

    -Name of film

    TV - series

    -Show Name

    -Books

    -Etc.

Is this possible? Is to select a volume than the main iTunes folder of media app messes things why?

It seems OK, I had to «Organize library...» "after moving and all the orphaned files have been moved to /Music they belong.

I think I like iTunes a little more now

  • Sync my iPhone on Itunes with NAS library

    Hello

I used to sync to my iphone via itunes with iTunes library that I have stored on my NAS.

I have a new computer and want to do it again.

I had iTunes able to access my library iTunes stored on the NAS, I can play the music on my computer but when I want to sync my iphone, the obly on which I am authorized to do so by Itunes is the local library, not the one on the NAS.

How can I make the NAS library one to use for syncing my Iphone?

The phone searches for the exact same library file used the last time that synchronize you the phone with iTunes.

Hold down the option key while starting iTunes. When you are prompted to select a library to select the file iTunes Library.itl the SIN. If it is not there then you have not kept the entire library on the NAS and the left critical parts of your library back on the old computer.  The only recourse is to get these files to this computer or a backup.  It is usually best to use a portable library but with a SIN, you can run into all kinds of trouble with any iTunes library. In this case, I suspect I know what the problem is, but there are several NAS posts here where we have no idea why a library all of a sudden I have messed up. iTunes and NAS do not play well together.

  • Cannot mount Freecom NAS

I searched on the web and this forum several times for a suggestion of what has happened to my NAS access, but never found a solution despite trying many things suggested.

I have a (Freecom) external HARD drive sitting on my home network with its own fixed IP address. On this disc, I have a number of actions implemented. One was created specially for me store related things Mac when I got my Powerbook in 2006. I used to have no problem to access this share of OS X Leopard (I know, it was a long time ago). Nothing has changed on the disk, but I can access it from my new Mac (Macbook Pro, El Capitan)? N °

If I browse the network, I see the player, if I click on the drive that I see the actions, then when I try and open sharing, sometimes I'm invited connection credentials, sometimes I'm not, but the result is always the same: there was a problem connecting to the server "Freecom" check the server name or IP address, and then try again. If you continue to have problems, contact your system administrator.

Maybe I shouldn't give myself credit for being the administrator of the system, but it is the situation that I am, so where do I turn?

I can access the web player access page and create new actions, but it is not always accessible. There permissions configurable through the interface, in the past, I always guest access. It is extremely frustrating that I wish that someone could point to a possible origin.

I dove into the world of terminal and created a nsmb.conf file in an effort to solve the problem, but I can't control here and can only work parrot fashion, not really understanding what I'm doing.

If anyone can offer advice, I would be very grateful.
