Safeguarding of documents on the desktop

I want to record Word or other documents such as pictures on my desk but I can't find this location option in save or save as.

To quickly access the desktop computer, click on the drop down menu left of the navigation bar (see button in red in the image below).

You can also add the desktop to your favorite folders (as I did in the screenshot below).  To do this, go to your account (in my case, "Shawn") folder and drag the desktop folder in the Favorites list.

If it was useful, you can vote by clicking on the green triangle. If it solves the problem, click on propose as answer. Thank you!

There should be a "My Documents" folder for each user account on your computer.  For example, if you have configured your computer with two user accounts, Don and Phyllis, there should be C:\Documents and Settings\Phyllis\My Documents Settings\Don\My Documents and C:\Documents.

    Please answer the following questions:

    1. When you say you have three "My Documents" on your desktop, they are records or they are shortcuts (with the arrow curved in the lower left corner of the icon)?

    2. for each of the three folders "My Documents" on your desktop, right click and select Properties.

    • If the icon is a shortcut, select the tab "shortcut".  Copy the information that is in the 'Target' box and paste it into your reply here.
    • If the icon is not a shortcut, select the tab "General".  Copy and paste the information after the word "Location" in your response here.

Once it is clear that these elements of "My Documents" on your desktop actually represent, I can suggest ways to consolidate things.

  • When I start my system, some notifications invites to the top of their own and I still see the desktop.ini file in my documents/files please what this means?

Every time I start my system, the Lync appears, a modem exe shortcut. files also appears, how can I stop this?

I want to know the meaning of desktop.ini, I remove cause it's to show in most of my documents?

Your thread was started successfully in the forum comments, so I moved it to the windows 'Repair and recovery' forum where is is more on the subject.  You must return to your topic and we tell which version of Windows you are using.

Look in your startup folder to see if you see Lync and modem.exe shortcuts in this folder.  If so, remove them and you should no longer see these pop-ups when you connect.

You can get rid of him, but it can return.  Desktop.ini is usually a file hidden, so you must have the display of hidden files and folders active if you do not see it.  Desktop.ini is a file that is present in many files and it is used by the process to "customize the folder.  It allows you to specify multiple behaviors to a folder and what desired icon displayed for a folder.  See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/cc144102(v=vs.85).aspx for a more in-depth explanation of the desktop.ini file.  For certain folders such as My Documents, you should probably leave it alone.  It won't hurt anything especially if you do remove it, but the folder will then behave like any other folder, you can create.

  • Why the computer preformance decreases when documents are stored on the desktop?

    * original title - only program shortcuts should go on the Office *.

I really think that most of it comes from the icon cache and the time of Windows 95, nothing more.  The desktop icons are consuming a small amount of RAM, the question is did it really matter that much on the machines of today, and it really mattered on Windows 95 machines with enough RAM, like 32 MB or more.

You can see ancient literature of technical Toolkit for more information on the bottlenecks of memory bottlenecks and suggestions to solve them.  Since the Server 2000 Resource Kit:

    Solve a memory bottleneck

Although adding memory is an easy solution for a memory bottleneck, it shouldn't be the first option, that you agree. Try the following, more profitable alternatives before you spend money on additional memory. If you decide eventually to add memory, note that the maximum amount of memory recommended for a computer running Windows 2000 Server is 4 GB.

    • Monitor your applications and replace or correct those that a memory leak or use it inefficiently.

    • Modify your application in order to improve locality of reference. The Working Set Tuner, included in the Platform SDK, recommends an optimal organization of the code functions. For more information, see the MSDN link on the Web Resources page at http://windows.microsoft.com/windows2000/reskit/webresources .

    • Increase the size of the pagefile. Generally, the more you can do, the better. You can also have multiple paging files, but you should have several files of pagination by physical drive when the drive is not partitioned into logical drives. Volume aggregated by bands can be used. This helps to improve the rate of reading / writing to the pagefile because the work is distributed on multiple disks.

    • Check the available space on your disks. If you use a large swap file space is not available, this can produce symptoms of a memory bottleneck.

    • To conserve memory, avoid using certain display and sound effects. Who can drain memory offers animated cursors, desktop icons, wallpaper large bitmap and some screen saver programs; deleting or disabling can offer certain benefits in a limited-memory system.  Reduce the color depth and screen resolution display can also save memory, but to a lesser extent.

    • To free memory, disable services that you don't use. Stop services that you do not regularly saves memory and improves the performance of the system. However, make sure you that understand the ramifications to stop a service before do you.

    • Remove the drivers and unnecessary protocols. Similarly slow protocols use space in the pools of memory paginated and not paginated. Drivers also use memory. You can see how a driver uses the memory with the parser in Pool (Poolmon.exe).

    • Replace the 16-bit systems with 32-bit systems for better reliability and performance.

    • If you have other computers that are underutilized, move applications in memory of these computers.

Icons on the desktop MAKE use memory, but seriously, how much difference is really only at this time?  In my opinion the last word goes to the NT4 Resource Kit:

"If all else fails, add memory. After struggling with a neck memory bottlenecks and exhausting effects, you will find the best answer of the whole system is well worth the investment. »

I am running XP, Sp 3;  IE8;  Email in Mozilla Thunderbird that I don't know if I checked the correct section; If this isn't the case, could you send it to the right place?  Thank you.

After a recent update of Windows, my computer went haywire.  Everything is affected.  I'll get a fixed thing, and something goes wrong.  Try to correct this, and the thing original mess up again.  Here is what happened.

1 got everywhere too small font sizes.  E-mails, documents, anywhere there is the text.

    2. no don't fix takes care of everything.  The fonts changed for those unfamiliar in an e-mail, documents, office, where I used to have a type and font size for a page, it changes: the body of the email will be unique size, the toolbars and menu drop-down dialog boxes boxes another, each different section on the page is a different size and mixed fonts.

    3. the last thing when I tried to fix something, is emphasized.  The text under the icons on the desktop are underlined.  In 'My Documents', the name of all the files and folders are underlined and the style of police and the size has changed.

    4. at one point, I had the body of emails fixed (can't remember how); the next thing I know the text is on a PT. 6 I want to 12 or 10.  I started to email a few minutes ago and the text was so small, I couldn't read it so stopped.  When this happened, the toolbars and some of the other font sizes returned nearby, original or original.

It's midnight; I've been at this for hours and just, it's even worse.  There are probably other things wrong, but I'm so exhausted, I can't think.  I had hoped there was a magical place, I could go that would put everything back as it was before the update of Windows.  Please, can you help me?   Thank you very much.

    Hi AnnP1937,

You can try chaning windows fonts in Internet Explorer and check.

    Method 1:

To change the size of the font in internet explorer, see the link below.

Internet Explorer Zoom lets you enlarge or reduce the view of a Web page. Unlike changing font size, zoom enlarges or reduces everything on the page, including text and images. You can zoom from 10% to 1000%.

If you're still having problems, then try a system restore and verify.

    Method 2:

To run the system restore, try the steps:

    a. Click Start, click programs, accessories principally made, click System Tools and then click System Restore.
