SAN, SQL and Exchange, Dell MD3200 strategy

Hello world

For background, we are a small company with < 50 users.  All users are on our Exchange Server (database currently about 100GB, WAY TOO LARGE, but I digress) and 25 of the users are on a basic SQL database application.

I bought a pair of Dell R510 and a SAN MD3200, which will be direct-joint for the R510 via 6 GB/s Fibrechannel.  The two physical servers will have 4 connections to the San.

The SAN is 12 discs, all 300 GB 15K drives.

Now, I know regarding the total IOPS the MD3200 will take care of my needs, but I want to optimize the creation of a LUM (s) better as I can for the performance, and quite frankly, I'm really not sure.

I thought to do 3 4-drive RAID 10 LUMs, but leaves me helpless.  I could go 2 5 disks RAID 5 with a hot spare per RAID, or just a big RAID 5 LUM giant with a single hot spare.

All this will serve in a v5 VMWare environment.

Thoughts, opinions?  And I thank in advance for your ideas

Kevin

I would put all the drives in a single Bay (less than what you allocate as a hot spare).   This way, you get all records that also contribute to the IO.

Division I/O in data / logs is not a bad thing, but practically it is difficult to do and tend to end up with some discs that are too busy, while others are inactive.

  • SQL and Exchange on the same material - need help with storage!

    Hi all!

I am definitely a newbie in the world of virtualization.  A colleague and I have spent hours scouring the Internet and reading white papers for answers and have been unable to find exactly what it takes.  So far, there has not been a lack of trying.  We are a very small company with 75 employees.  We have an Exchange Server and implement our first SQL Server and we want to virtualize both on hardware nine using the ESX 4.0 Essentials.  I don't know, probably not the best two apps to virtualize on a single piece of hardware, but we have about 12 people, using SQL server... at least for the foreseeable

the future.  I'll try to make this simple in my questioning:

(1.) what is the difference between a logical unit number, a PIN, a VMFS, a VM data store and how they relate to each other?  I know what means LUNS and VMFS and I know what a brooch is a hard drive, so no links to wikis on the definition of a LUN ;-).  Been there, done that.   These terms seem to be used very freely in all directions and it's confusing about how they relate to storage.

(2.) we have 6 146 GB SAS drives for storage on my HP ML350G6, the config that I want to work with is the following:

2 hard drives - RAID 1 - held Exchange OS, T-logs Exchange and SQL OS (possibly install VCenter Server on that as well in another virtual machine)
4 hard drives - RAID 10 - will hold the Exchange and SQL DB database.

Y at - it faults with this configuration?

(3.) if #2 above is OK, how you (and you should in our small store scenario) cover several RAID (spindle?) arrays with a virtual machine.  In other words, how to you create a virtual Exchange computer and upgrade the operating system on a RAID, newspapers on the same value but different partition RAID and the Pb on a completely different RAID set?

(4.) if #2 not OK, I should just create 2 simple VM Exchange, a for SQL and worry not separate newspapers/operating systems of databases on RAID berries?

I thank you very much in advance!  These forums are wonderful!

    Confused in Cincinnati,

    -Bryan

Thanks for your reply Wes!   I have a few questions for follow-up

    make sure that I understand.

Therefore a unit logic simply number a "partition" carved on a storage space (if that)

storage is a single hard drive or a RAID array)?   And of course each hard

drive is a PIN, but when you take 3 discs and their RAID together.

they, in fact, become a PIN, especially when it comes

    on reduncanc and no performance?

VMware "" still does not see the storage, particularly the way in which you install. ESX will simply see a drive, format it with VMFS, so you can create files of your virtual hard disk on top of that (.vmdks) and your virtual configuration (.vmx)

I'm not sure I understand the concern with VCenter Server?   It can not

be on the same box as ESX running a VM couple?   My opinion is that

VCenter Server would be just an another VM on this box?   Maybe I need to

Read more on the VCenter Server!

vCenter may work in esx, but it is preferable to have an another box, also don't forget that vcenter has its own SQL database and needs 3 + GB of ram. In your configuration, you can do better leaving vcenter out of the picture completely.

    Thanks again!

    -Bryan

    More like this:

    RAID 1 array: LUN1-> Datastore1-> ExchangeOS.vmdk, ExchangeLogs.vmdk, SQLOS.vmdk RAID 10 Array: LUN2-> Datastore2-> ExchangeDB.vmdk, SQLDB.vmdk

  • Reference Dell R710, Dell and VMware VAAI MD3200

Hi guys, we have 3 x Dell R710 hosts running VMware ESXi hypervisor v5.1. Our SAN is via Dell MD3200 Direct attached storage. We have activated the option of High Performance. My question is about VMware VAAI. In particular, the recommendation of VMware: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1033665 it says: "For more information on support VAAI in a particular storage group or required firmware levels, contact the storage array provider." So I'm wondering: is VAAI supported (or not) with the MD3200... and otherwise: should I be deactivation of VAAI settings as recommended by VMware? What are the potential implications for the performance of deactivation of VAAI... or support DO NOT turn it off? Thank you, Steve

Indeed, you are using a fairly old firmware. The most recent is 07.84.53.60.

To be able to upgrade to this version, you will need a version quite familiar of the MDSM. I would say to download 4.1.2.29 or later, which is 5.0.0.70. All servers Windows and Linux (not VMware or XenServer) server that manage and/or are connected via iSCSI SAN should have their MDSM, updated software before upgrade you the firmware on the raid on the SAN controller.

  • New to VMware and Exchange 2010

    Hello

I'm new to VMware and have some questions about the installer.  We just bought a HP DL380 G7 server and Exchange 2010.  I want to virtualize this server with a BES.  I'm trying to understand the best way to proceed.  We also have a Dell EqualLogic iSCSI SAN (PS4000).  Wouldn't it be better for me to boot from SAN and have ESxi installed on the SAN?  Or would it be preferable for ESxi installed on the server and have my VM hosted/installed on the SAN?  Thanks for the help.

    Hello owblueiii,

I almose same infrastructure such as this, when I started the virtualization process was confused in this place, finally, we kept the boot on local, VMs oniSCSI SAN.

advantages: 1. because if you have any questions you can the Como.

2 and also a little difficult to troubleshoot if you have the on iscsi san boot partition.

    3. you can register your vms on san iscsi timing if you want the new ESX installation.

Hope it's useful to your question.

  • SQL Developer Exchange (partly) broken

Sorry for the brutal grip, but I tried to address this for quite a long time: "Public reports" part of SQL Developer Exchange (https://apex.oracle.com/pls/apex/f?p=43135:24:NO:RP:) seems to be at a standstill for 2011 (sic!). There is nothing to do with a younger timestamp, nor can I publish reports autodéfinies.

Another strange thing is that there is no contact information on the site SQLDev Xchange. That's why I'm posting here instead of posting an admin directly.

I've marked it as a question so here goes: this part of the site will never be fixed?

    Care to come shamelessly:

I would like to share my reports user-defined somewhere central and well known, but for the moment I put in place a public on GitHub repository to fill the void. You are welcome.

    See you soon,.

We built a new Exchange, we just need to activate it

It will not start with a mechanism for sharing of reports/snippets originally... we could also build in a mechanism to pull things like this down directly from github

  • MS SQL or Exchange Storage Tuning Question

Does anyone know how better to tune SQL or Exchange storage?

We create 2 TB LUN using the SAS 8 x 300 GB on an IBM DS3400 FC SAN disks.

    (1) for the creation of the IBM Storage Manager dashboard, should what segment size we use? the indicated only are 128 KB or 256 KB. (512 can be done using the CLI)

    (2) what VMFS block size should be used? Then this SQL affect disk performance?

    (3) is there any special NTFS formatting required in the operating system (Windows Server 2003) to get better disk performance?

Advice or guidance would be appreciated.

    Concerning

    Nicholas

Reading the messages of various virtualization experts, the size of the block of VMFS has little impact on performance. If you have more than 256 GB virtual disks, then a larger block size would be better.

Also, be sure to create the VMFS with Virtual Center partition as this will automatically align the VMFS.

You need to align your XXXX in Windows Server 2003 for best performance. VMware has a guide that can be referenced here:

  • Problem with WSUS after upgrade of SQL and SCCM

A few years ago, we implemented SCCM 2012 R2 on a virtual machine running Server 2008 R2 (Enterprise), using 2012 SQL for databases.  We use it for software deployment, updates/patches via WSUS and imagery of the network.  Everything is smooth enough for most, even if we hit a few snags Windows 10 points when that came out.  After you install the patches and updates to our Server 2008 box to make it compatible with Windows 10 content, everything was good again.  A few weeks ago, I decided to update our version of SCCM 1511 and SQL for 2014.  After the two updates, I tested imaging and software deployment, and everything seemed good.  I forgot WSUS, however... and later visited account it was not working properly for these updates.  Unfortunately, I realized after I deleted the VM snapshot, I got to thinking that everything was good (stupid, I know).  After researching and discovering some of the errors were permissions associated with - why would have changed the permissions on folders of SQL and SCCM upgrade I have no idea - those who have since been smoothed.  Now, my mistakes seem to be related SQL more and I hit a dead end with research.  When I opened WSUS and go look at the clocks, he tries to load the history of synchronization, and after a few minutes-error with the following information:

The WSUS administration console failed to connect to the WSUS server database.

Verify that SQL server is running on the WSUS server. If the problem persists, try restarting SQL.

I found a few forums that suggest to uninstall WSUS and delete the database, and then reinstall WSUS.  Unfortunately, when I try install fails... giving only an error code and no other explanation of why.  The error is 0 x 80070643, which is supposed to be due to the current user not having the "sysadmin" in SQL.  However, I have tried with several accounts I checked to make you have the sysadmin role in SQL (and are also part of the Administrators group on the server itself)-always get the same error message.

I would really like to try to find that rather than wasting his time with the construction of a new server and redo our whole SCCM environment... get the client reinstalled on all our machines to synchronize with a new server appears as a huge headache.  Is there anyone else out there who know what would cause this?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • SBS Server 2003 and Exchange Server - need access, but don't have HARD drive

    Hello

A couple of years our sever dies completely, but we kept the drive HARD, but unfortunately not the CD with the software or the software key. So, I now have 2HDD, the original boot partition and the other with the data. now as well clean and fully functional and connected to an old desk. I can see everything beautiful, but I can't boot from the original boot drive (I tried simply disconnecting desktop boot disk and windows for 1 second logo shows a d, then chucks back me to the initial charge (BACK?).) The point is that I need to boot into SBS2003 with exchange server installed in order to access a handful of old emails that have become extremely important, as well as to run an old version of Filemaker server, which can run on any newer operating system

I tried, by the way, a converter for swap files and I can see the directories but I think that, unless I paid $xxx.00 for something, which I can't afford now, so I will not get the emails and all attachments back.

So my question is this - is anyway that I can use the original startup disk in a new hardware environment to restore sbs 200 and Exchange if you work? I paid huge sums for both, so I think I should be able to use it again!

    Thank you very much
