Satellite L40 - installation of XP cannot detect HARD drive

Hi, Toshiba support

I have Satellite L40 - 18Y (PSL48E-03702NAR) with Windows Vista

I want to install Windows XP, but I can't because my HDD is SATA and installation of windows XP cannot detect the HARD drive.

I know that I have to update my BIOS.
I have 2 files on Toshiba drivers download

I downloaded their extract them & try to update the BIOS one. After that, I log in the BIOS
I can't find (HARD drive Mode) must Mode IDE.

How can I solve this problem?

Hello!

> How can I solve this problem?
I think you find hundreds of discussions in the forum about this please use the forum search!

A BIOS update is not necessary to install Windows XP. You only need the SATA drivers you can find in the Intel Storage Manager driver package that can be downloaded on the Toshiba site. Pilots must be integrated during the XP installation with an external floppy drive or use you nLite to create a new installation disc.

Anyway, check this link from Toshiba which is an order exact step by step installation:

    Hello

I want to install windows XP SP2 on a L40 but boot with the XP CD, Windows Setup does not detect the hard drive.
The hard drive is a SATA drive.

Please wat could be the problem?

    Hello!

It is really hard to read these questions...

The solution is pretty simple: you need the SATA drivers. At the point where your HARD drive is running in AHCI mode and so you need drivers. On Intel chipsets, is the Intel Storage Manager.

If you want to learn more on this subject, please search here in the forum. There are already a lot of discussions about this, and I have that could be useful for you:

  • Cannot detect hard drive

    Dear Sir.

I just got this T320 and my problem is now I have no cd, readers, manuals, etc coz they it shipped from China. I tried to follow all of the instructions but cannot find the 2 installed 500HDD (Constellation of Dell).

Please help me to make the system work.  I tried ATA AHCI RAID and so forth, but could not detect the hard drive.

Thank you for your support and greetings to all.

    Hello

The reason Windows installation doesnot see readers, is that pilots of PERC is not loaded.

    Here's what I suggest:

    (1) you've seen stranger configration in PD MGMT. (something I need to know is, you are about to install a new window, right?) -If so, clear the foreign configuration. Page 44 of the reference: ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/Common/poweredge-rc-h310_User%27s%20Guide_en-us.pdf

    (2) after deleting, move forward and create a RAID. Reference page 41, same link.

    (3) you can proceed to installing windows using some methods. I recommend the Page 8 "Installation of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 using USC"

    FTP://FTP.Dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_electronics/esuprt_software/esuprt_operating_system/Ms-win-Srvr-2008-r2_Reference%20Guide2_en-us.PDF

  • RS140 cannot detect HARD drive

    Hello.

I need advice on the LSI to Lenovo RS140 Server raid controller...
Our company have a Lenovo RS140 server with 4 SATA HDD.

When I boot with EasySetup DVD, it does not detect any HARD disk.
But the BIOS detects all the HARD disk properly.

I have updated firmware on the controller BIOS and LSI to the current version of EasyUpdate DVD, but no result...
    How to fix?

    Hello

Since you are using a PCIe SATA RAID controller / SAS configuration setting should be AHCI.

As seen in PIC1, you must go to the LSI WebBIOS to configure the adapter and create your virtual drive. This should allow you to install the OS.

I guess you have the cables connecting the hard drives connected in the adapter 9240 using a mini connector SAS, correct? If you have the drives connected to the system board, the RAID controller will not be able to see them.

  • T400 Windows 7 or Vista clean install - cannot detect hard drive

I tried to install Windows Vista x 64 and Windows 7 x 64 using copies of two OS on my T400 retail. No operating system can find the hard disk during the installation process. I downloaded all the possible drivers of Lenovo and load them via USB for installation, with absolutely no luck. I installed Ubuntu until we have a usable computer, but I really need Win7 there, so I understand that. All solutions? (and tell me to go download the driver isn't going to help me). Also, I have messed around with the setting AHCI in the BIOS, but that did not help either.

I thought about it. For some reason, I had to delete all partitions on the disk and create a single NTFS partition (using gParted), and then he appeared. I had not yet install a driver during Setup (BIOS was set to the compatibility mode).

I've never seen this before on the wide variety of machines to dual boot, I've built in the past. Well well, at least its working now.

Installing a version commercial (street copy) of Windows XP on a Toshiba Vista laptop.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Step 1: Prepare the BIOS
-Go to section Support/Drivers on the Toshiba site and look for your model of Toshiba
-If your phone has a separate version of BIOS for XP and Vista, download the BIOS XP and run it in Windows.
-If you cannot start Windows, you can update the BIOS after installing XP.

Step 2: Enable SATA Compatibility Mode in the BIOS
-If installing XP cannot detect SATA drive, enable SATA Compatibility Mode in BIOS if this option is available and install XP.

Step 3: Install XP using a floppy with the SATA drivers
-If SATA compatibility mode is not available, you must use the SATA drivers diskette during installation of XP. Follow these steps:

    (1) Download driver Windows XP SATA F6 on the site of Toshiba Support/downloads.
If a single SATA/AHCI F6 driver is unavailable, download and extract the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver for XP in a temporary folder.
The Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver package must contain some files under the folder "F6flpy". For example: C:\temp\Intel Matrix Storage Manager\F6flpy\ICH8M_32bit
Choose the right folder. For example: ICH8M_32bit for a Chipset of Intel ICH8 during installation of Windows XP 32-bit.

    (2) copy these files (iastor.inf, etc.) on a blank diskette. The files must reside in the root directory of the floppy disk.
    For example: A:\iastor.inf, A:\iaahci.inf, etc...

    (3) connect a Toshiba USB floppy drive to the Toshiba laptop. (some non - Toshiba USB Floppy Drives may not work correctly during the installation of XP)

    (4) (4) demarrer start from the Windows XP CD, start the installation and make sure that your floppy with the drivers is inserted into the floppy USB drive.

    (5) for the XP installation invites you to press F6 to install a storage driver, immediately press F6.

    (6) for installing XP you invites to select a SATA driver, select the appropriate driver and continue.
    For example: ICH7M Intel(r) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller, Intel(r) ICH8M 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller

    (7) keep the attached floppy drive and floppy disk inserted XP has not completed its installation.
Do not partition or format the hard drive during the installation of XP. The diskette SATA drivers are copied and stored on the hard drive during the installation of XP.

  • Satellite A210-171 - maximum capacity of a hard drive?

What is the max HDD capacity satellite a210-171 may take?

    Hi turboiwan,

As much I know satellite A210-171 has already interface SATA HARD drive so that you can install each HARD drive with this interface because the standard SATA are without capacity limits. This means that hard drives of 500 GB or more may work.

For example, I upgraded my laptop with 500 GB Western Digital drive HARD and this worked great.

  • Satellite 1410 714 extremely slow after replacing HARD drive

    Hello

I have a Satellite 1410-714 which has had a hard drive failure. I replaced the drive, but now the computer is extremely slow. Windows has been reinstalled, it was really slow too much and now it takes minutes for windows to start.

I suspect that something might have broken on the motherboard and the hard disk. I checked mobo replacement parts, but have not found anything for-714, so a 1410 mobo compatible? This model has a processor celeron 1.8.

    Thanks for help.

    Hello

I can t think the motherboard is broken after replacing HARD drive.
I suggest updating the BIOS first. Maybe your old BIOS have a few problems with the most recent HARD drive.
Please check site driver Toshiba for the latest version of BIOS.

Have you used any anties Virus applications?

I have 2 failure windows 7 installs with 35 GB of hard drive space. but I find no windows.old file?

The first installation failed because I had a copy of counterfeit Windows 7.

I bought another copy and installed. Then, I got a horrible virus/worm that disabled all .exe files and the fix was just beyond me!

I installed again but did not know that the previous facility where still there.

I tried to clean the disc, but I don't me "from previous versions of windows" to clean.

I find no windows.old file. (Enabled hidden files)

Only I have a disc ssd 60gig and want the missing 35gig kindly returned to use.

    Can someone help?

Check the system restore to see how much disk space it uses:

    Click Start

    Right click on computer

    Click on properties

    Click on advanced system settings

    Click on the System Protection

    Click on configure

Adjust the amount of disk space allocated to system restore.

In addition, the amount of RAM you have installed, it will take more disk space for paging, hibernation, and dump files.

  • Cannot install Win 8 - Satellite Pro C660 does not detect HARD drive

    Hello

My HARD drive died, so I decided to upgrade my Satellite Pro C660 - 1 9 to an SSD.
I made a USB bootable with Win8 and starts very well.

The problem is that it does not detect my SSD, so I can proceed with the installation.
SSD appears in BIOS but not in Windows Installer.
He said that there is a missing driver.

I downloaded the AHCI drivers (XP, only ones available) and even in this case, after you have selected the only rider that appears, it says no new device found.

I tried to change the SATA from AHCI mode to compatibility mode and it's the same thing...

    What can I do?

    Thanks for the help.
    Best regards
    Bruno Moreira

More old Windows XP need a driver AHCI Intel's but I think this isn't a problem with SATA driver missing because as far as I know Windows 8 as well as Win 8.1 already contains the drivers to recognize the SSD or HARD disk drive.
In addition, the installation of the OS should be possible even if the driver would be added for this procedure, you must use the "compatibility" mode
As you say, the compatibility mode is not working too, so I think there is another problem.

However, page driver Toshiba also provides a driver Intel RST (Intel Rapid Storage Technology) (Windows 8 - updated) you can try to add during the installation of the OS.

But I m wondering if you would be able to install this Win 8 on common SATA HDD.
Have you tried to format the SSD using a different computer, then install Win 8?
    Give it a try.

  • Satellite Pro L300 - installation of Linux RHES4 cannot find HARD drive

    Hello

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro L300 and it comes with preinstalled Vista, I loaded the XP due to the fact that I was going to see if I could load linux Redhat Enterprise 4 and dualboot both operating systems at the same time but discovered this "DOUBLE BOOT" means that you can have 2 operating systems but can only bott one or the other...

Anyway, my problem is that I want to just install Redhat Enterprise 4 linux on my laptop, but when it comes to partition the hard drive I get an error message saying "cannot find the hard drive to create file systems" then click OK and restart.

    Any ideas people?

    Chris.

    Hello

I m not a Linux expert, but I think that the reason is missing SATA drivers.
Normally, on each notebook with SATA HDD, you need SATA drivers to recognize the HARD drive before installing OS.
If you install Windows XP or Vista, you need storage for this Manager. The drivers can be loaded with an external floppy drive.
But I put t know how it works on Linux

An alternative you can change in the mode of AHCI Compatible HARD disk BIOS. Then, you don't need drivers and your disk should be recognized correctly.

Otherwise, I recommend this thread: http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=14

    Hello!

You will find hundreds of discussions here in the forum about this, if you install Windows XP and Vista from a Microsoft disc and the HARD drive can't be detected... So he s strange to read these questions again and again.

However, to install Windows, you need the SATA drivers or let's say the Intel Storage Manager package. It contains the driver you need. You can then create a new installation using nLite [www.nliteos.com]

(I tried first with HARD drive recovery, did not work - I have the same problem with recovery DVDs)

    1. start with recovery disc 1
    2. you start the recovery process
    3. the process creates partitions and copy images (disc 1 and 2). After it is done it asks to restart the system.
    4. after restarting, I see on the screen: «Preparing for first use...» »
    5. after 1 Minute I see the message "Please wait... complete the installation.
    6. after 5-6 Minutes, the laptop restarts automatically (without error)

It seems that the installation program is unable to complete the installation. It was the same problem with the recovery of HARD drive too, I thought that the recovery disc will help you... didn't.

    Any suggestion?

    Hi kwarc,.

I have a similar portable Satellite L500. I've had the laptop with preinstalled Windows 7 also but I n t had problems to get it back. Both HARD drive recovery works and the Toshiba Recovery disk that I created.

I think that it s really hard to say what is the reason why, maybe a problem with the image of recovery or material. You can try to install Windows using a Microsoft disc, please?
    It work?

In the worst cases, you need help from an authorized service provider. Technicians can check your laptop. :)
