Satellite M40 (PSM40): backlight is always on

I've had my laptop for about 3 years now without a single problem. I can't connect to the internet because it is only for audio use.

About 2-3 weeks ago, I tried to update the video drivers for a video application, I tried to run. I installed and everything was going well for a few days. Then one day I turned on my laptop and the backlight will not light. After awhile I * think * I have sucessfully cancelled the display driver and reinstalled original drivers. A few days later (after a lot of frustration) the backlight still worked until today.

Same situation, I turn on the laptop and the backlight will not light. I tried the same trick as before, but it didn't work. Strangely enough, I simply turn off completely and then restarted and the backlight is again.

I looked in the power settings and I am sure that this has nothing to do with it. is there anything else I can do to eliminate where it is associated with software? Are there other settings that I can check?

Hi mate,

It s certainly hard to tell where the problem lies. I would tend to say: "it s a hardware problem (-> the display inverter)" but the fact that you´ve installed a driver takes me by surprise and I wonder if a driver can really cause such an error.
In your case, I would first try to exclude a hardware problem to update the BIOS and the recovery of your machine. Look pretty and clean reinstall in order to exclude any possibilities of software-releated.

So if you are ready to try my suggestion I would appreciate if you give a status report on your situation shaped in a small post. :)

Welcome them

  • Satellite M40 (PSM40): where to find a NVidia display driver?

On the way to update my driver, I uninstalled old, but the driver I found on the nVidia site will not work. (The error message: "Setup nVidia didn't find all the drivers that are compatible with your current hardware.) The installation program will now stop. »)

I then searched a driver on the Toshiba site, but are all there drivers ATI or Intel. So, when I check my system, it does not find my video card (I use the method of debugging) and there is nothing other than the basic thing of VGA.

It's scary because I know that you can not change the graphics card, and if I can't fix this, then I'm screwed. =/

Video card: nVidia GEFORCE FX 6600 (which I can't find on the nVidia site)

    Hello

Very strange can you please post you detailed name (number of your laptop)?
I searched the Satellite M40 with graphics card nVidia but didn t find any model
I also checked the Toshiba driver page and didn t find all the graphic drivers for the nVidia card.

You will not be able to install the original graphics drivers on the graphics card manufacturing site because the graphics drivers from Toshiba are a bit changed.

    Best regards

    Hello

Why you n t check page pilot European Toshiba?

There are all the drivers that are required for this unit.

I presume you didn't search in the area of the Archive. Is this good?
Well, seems that the drivers have been moved to archive because the M40 is a little old series.

    Check it!

  • Question about updating BIOS for my Satellite M40

So, my laptop does not start, but works recovery procedure. Support suggested me to update my Bios.
OK, given that the last time, it was easy.

    I downloaded the newsest version vor my Satellite M40 (PSM40) (1, 70 - WIN<= i="" have="" an="" ati="" grafics="" card)="" and="" extracted="" the="" bios-20070709161345.zip="">
    But there was a surprise:
Instead of getting the old data structure, as written in the FAQ update Bios
1 extract the zip file containing the BIOS upgrade to a temporary folder.
    2. in the folder temporary three subfolders will be generated. "docs", 'Update - 3.5' disc', 'Update - CD - R or CD - RW"

I get a file only: BIOS of Windows Knockhill10GV170.exe
Extraction of it I get 8 files:
    -fdbase.img
    -InsydeFlash.exe
    -iscflash.dll
    -iscflash.vxd
    -KPM170. ROM
    -Platform.ini
    -The c:\windows\system32\unicows.dll

Now my question: How can I create this bootable CD-ROM to update my Bios?

Just to know: download all the other things are done on my desktop from my laptop is not starting ;)
I also tried to run the exe in the hope that it will create a floppy disk or a CD-ROM, but it is written "basic cfg address not found."

    Hello

Update the BIOS there are two ways to do this:
-Traditional mode (TRAD) and in this case, you need floppy
-Windows (WIN) and this update can be done under operating system running.

Update BIOS WIN will work if you run Windows on your laptop satellite. If I understand your assignment well you are trying to do traditional BIOS updated, but using the BIOS to WIN update. On the Toshiba download page, there are two listed BIOS updates and two of them as versions of WIN. This means that you can update the BIOS under operating system only.

Back to your problem: in the history one thing confuses me when you write: my laptop does not start, but works recovery procedure. Sorry, but if the recovery procedure is working and you will have clean installed OS.

Be a little more concrete in our laptop does not start. What happen exactly when you press the power button / stop?

  • Question chart shared memory - Vista on Satellite M40

I have Satellite M40-psm40 with ATI x 300 and my OS is Vista. The card has 64 MB of memory and takes 255MB with total of 319 MB of main RAM memory.

    How can I reduce it?
    * I checked the BIOS to see if can decrease, but nothing in the BIOS to change.

    Hello

Bad news man. You can not increase or decrease this RAM graphics card!
The installed ATI MOBILITY RADEON supports the fix own memory. It is not shared video RAM.

There is no way to make the most efficient card.

  • Satellite M40 - update the BIOS

    Hello

I need an update of the BIOS not corrupted for a Satellite M40 PSM40 ATI chipset.

Windows XP based wife M40 was a behavior more oddly for some time. Just weird crashes, does not software, etc. Seems to pass all the diagnostics, all OS/applications software is patched the current versions and analysis we all antivirus programs up-to-date and clean.

So, I thought I'd try updating the BIOS and other related stuff. It was about two months ago... When I discovered I couldn't download this shit, or anything else, on the Toshiba site. Despite calls telephone etc. told me ' just keep trying... and try... and so, you get the picture!

Then last weekend I tried downloading one of my Windows 2000/IE6 based PC and was surprised to find that they worked. I had previously used my Vista Home Premium 32/IE7 based PC, which I think was the source of my misery for so long to download...

Anyway... tried unpacking the BIOS tonight only to be told that he is corrupt or not a zip file. Tried to download again, same results. Have you tried unpacking on three different PC - XP, Vista, and Windows 2000, all with the same result.

    Help please?

    See you soon
    Peter

I can't believe that I downloaded the BIOS for the M40 (1.70) and I was able to unpack this package, so I guess that something was wrong during the download process.

I think you know what could be my advice ;) try again

    Good luck

  • Backlight is disabled until the power management software is loaded on the Satellite M40 - 295

Greetings to all members of the forum.

I am owner of ten months a Satellite M40-295. My problem is the following:

When I start my computer the backlight is disabled until I go into Windows and the power management program is loaded.
After that the backlight of the screen lights up. I tried to change the brightness with Fn-F6/7 and screens using Fn + F5 without success.

Init information (init messages, such as the Toshiba and Windows logo) appears on the screen (I checked it under the intense light and the screen from another angle of view), so the adapter seems to work properly.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Evangelos

I'm afraid that now, you have a problem. If the unit won't start the BIOS chip is probably damaged. In my opinion BIOS update was bad idea.

Right now I don't want write something on the screen because now it is not important at all. Please contact the customer Service of your country partner and let check the device. Sorry, but I'm 99.9% that the unit is now completely screwed.

If the appliance shows any sign of life is the case for the service. :(

  • On Satellite M40-223 some games make the display freeze

    Hello
    I have a Satellite M40-223 with an Ati Radeon X 600 is.
Some games (such as shockwave, world of warcraft games or never)
Winter Nights 2) make freeze display and the crash of the laptop
(accidents do happen after the same amount). I downloaded the drivers
on the toshiba site (16/11/05, 6.14.10.6534 drivers) and nothing has
has changed. Then I downloaded the latest drivers from the ati site
    (http://ati.amd.com/online/mobilecatalyst/) and removed the older
(following the instructions of ati). The display freezes always but
Sometimes the VPU recover the previous session.
    What should I do?
I will try to uninstall these drivers and install the ones toshiba
Once again? When I installed the drivers from toshiba for the first
I did use uninstaller first, time could this affect the most recent configuration?

I will try to use the omega drivers?

    Best regards

    Laura

    Hello

It s not advised not to use the graphics driver from Toshiba. The other drivers don't support the overheating protection. The games are a high performance programs. If these applications are running on the laptop all devices must operate with maximum performance and produce a lot of heat. The high temperature could be responsible for this gel and close downs.

I read in the forum that you can install the other drivers (not Toshiba) at your own risk.
I think you should check the fans for dust and debris.
Sometimes the cooling modules may not cool properly because the dust and, therefore, these problems occur.
Additional do not forget that there is enough free space around the laptop to the airflow correctly

  • Good for Satellite M40 DVD DVD player model

Can someone tell me what model of drive of DVD the Satellite M40 (PSM40A) was supposed to come with?
According to Windows (XP Pro), mine was initially a carpet * a UJ831S, the version of firmware 1.00. Due to problems with this drive, it was replaced under warranty by Toshiba.

According to the label, the new disc is a carpet * a UJ840, with annotation HW 1.10 FW 1.40, which I assume the hardware and firmware versions respectively. Problem is that this drive is reports still on Windows as a UJ831S, a firmware version 1.40 now.

I am sure that Toshiba write their own firmware for these drives and so have control over what is reported for Windows. I suspect that this model of M40 should never take a UJ840 and so it's to be deliberately badly reported to Windows as a UJ831S. I never saw the label on the original disc and have therefore no ideae if it was actually a UJ831S.

The reason why I'm curious is that I always have problems playing some audio CD original with this player and think that it could be a problem of hardware compatibility. It is certainly not a question of protection of the CD, and the CD set fine on other laptops I tried them, with the exception of Toshibas with Mat * one or recorders of DVD Teac.
Toshiba say that nothing can do more.

I must point out that this laptop was purchased in New Zealand and can be specific to the Australasian market. I write here because the New Zealand from Toshiba web site (actually ends up on the Austraian site) does not appear to have a forum.

    Thank you
    Malc

    Hello

I studied a bit in the internet on the disc that came with this unit but I can't find useful information about the name of the drive and which drive was delivered with this device, but I guess it was a UJ831S.
However, I suggest that the new drive is UJ840, but the Windows operating system recognizes this disk as a UJ831S because of the firmware.

I found this topic on the identification of bad player:
    http://forums.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=10034&start=15

In this case, the drive was out of life, and he was replaced by another having the same properties.
I think that he is even on your laptop.

  • Re: CDrom on Satellite M40 will not start

    Hi all

My cdrom on Satellite M40-142 drive won't start!
If I choose to boot from the dvd/cdrom, always my laptop boot from the disk. In my view, is a bios problem. Is it possible to reinstall my BIOS?

    Thank you very much

    Mario

    Hello

    > my m40-142 cdrom drive won't start!
    > If I choose to boot from the dvd/cdrom, always my laptop boot from the disk

    The possible reasons:

    1. it does not work. Is it read cd/dvd discs when you insert the?
    2. the cd/dvd disc you insert (ithink, you're talking about windows disk) not bootable.

    > . In my view, is a bios problem. Is it possible to reinstall my BIOS?

Yes, you should check for Bios on the Toshiba driver page:

  • Satellite M40 - 136 product dvd recovery

    Hello

I have problems with my laptop Satellite M40 136 I bought a year ago. If I close down the machine when I then turned it on it would give me a screen saying there is a problem in Windows and gave me the option 'Start windows normally', 'start with the last successful settings', 'start in safe mode', 'start in safe mode with networking' or 'start in safe mode with command prompt '. It would usually take several attempts before that Windows would fire up ok, any option to choose. However yesterday any have repeatedly tried it would not be in windows.

I decided that I need to use the dvd - rom product recovery is a relocation complete (fortunately I had saved my personal files). I did it, but at the end when he says 'ctrl-alt-del"to restart, reboot I got the same message"problem going into windows"with the same options. I repeated the recovery process 2 more times with no luck.

This morning, he did go further and asked me to go through the installation process of Windows (i.e. giving the phone a name, asking if I wanted to save the machine with toshiba/microsoft etc.) However he then pop up with the message "problem going into windows" with the options that I mentioned earlier. I choose any option that he ends up back on the same screen.

    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    HI Nicky,

It is possible that you have a problem with your hard drive. The operating system will always be usually resident in the same sectors of the hard drive even after a re-installation using your recovery CD, the same sectors of the hard drive will be used to store the files of the OS.

I suggest that you try to run a CHKDSK/F on your hard drive to see what it brings. Of course id there are lots of bad sectors then will consider you replacing the hard drive.

    Kind regards

  • Satellite M40-285 - CPU overheating after the accident with water

    Hello everyone,

I have a Toshiba Satellite M40-285, and 2 days ago, my girlfriend dumped a cup of tea on the keyboard... The computer turns off after a few seconds. Immediately, I put the laptop upside down and disassembled parts. There was some liquid inside (especially inside the speakers under the keyboard and where is the DVD unit). Other parts (CPU, memory, wireless card, hard drive area) were completely dry. I have it with napkings and dry with a hair dryer (later I read that I shoud never use a hair dryer...).

The turs laptop on one seems to work fine (only the first screen where it says toshiba remains more than normal long (15 seconds or more) before entering windows). But the problem I have is that the CPU gets overheated and the laptop shuts down after 5-15 minits of use. I'm getting attention via the RightMark utility I said "* Core overheating * ' and the temperature always between 45 - 55 c

I replaced the thermalgrease but the problem remains. The CPU fan works (I think that the two speeds). The heatsink is very hot after the computer turns off (it burns my fingers if I touch)

What could be the problem? * Is the processor damaged? Can be a problem in the motherboard? *
I don't know what to don't know because is not woth the money to send it to the technical service, but I can't buy a new laptop now...

    Hey,.

I m wondering that the laptop is still ongoing and no more parts are damaged. In addition he s very cool that you could fix it yourself and dry. Many people don t know how ;)

In any case, if the CPU is overheating it seems that something on the assembly or the cooling fan is damaged and must be replaced. Possibly peut t fan run with the highest speed more, who knows.

Of course, it is difficult to say what is the cause of the problem, but in your case I would try ordering a new fan and the heatsink too. The two parties shouldn't t be expensive and it seems that you can replace yourself.
So just contact a service provider allowed in your country to order these parts. They can do this.

Good luck and feedback would be great, I am interested on this! :)

  • Satellite M40 - 277 keeps restarting - button / stop?

I have the problem that the (per hour to enter acient) laptop Satellite M40 277 of mine keeps restarting unpredictibally. Initially I have if it was a problem of overheating, so I used SpeedFan and CPU-Burn a test, but the computer does not restart until the airflow to the bottom is fine (I consider that the entry of the fan on the bottom a design error, but it's something else). Now, if the air flow is a bit stuffy, the laptop stops at about 83 and then it will have difficulty to challenge. Ok.

However when the laptop is about 63C it restarts sometimes and I feel, it can be a power button is stuck. I have XP installation so that it will always ask before you actually stop, and when I pick up the phone on the side (the plastic box where the power button is integrated in waiting) I often question of the judgment. NP, just click away. But I also feel that the button can get stuck and then the system turns off after 5 seconds of 'holding company' the power button.

So I just tried to get a quick glance and we should normally be able to remove the keyboard, but this M40 is a challenge. Even after that the keyboard is free, I don't see the actual power button.

Is there anyway to loook under high elegant green rim the power button? How to open this thing up?

    Tom

    Hello

As far as I know this little switch cover is fixed by 6 latches and connected with small flat cable to the motherboard. It just seems but if you don't know how to remove it you can damage these small latches and later you won't be able to fix the new.

Anyway, if you think that this power button / troubled maybe just make the switch cover replacement may solve the problem.
What say about it? Try to get the spare part and ask if anyone can exchange it for you.
Of course, the best thing is to ask for professional help, but it will cool somewhat.

Another way, do a risk and try to replace one.
Let me know what you think of this.

    Good bye

  • White screen on Satellite M40-129 with no BIOS access

OK, I really tried a lot of things to find out what it may be.
When I start the laptop it seems to start, but the rest black screen (AC + Power lights up, but no disk HARD-light).
I tried several times, even with ESC + on and F2 + now and 50 only once I could see the splash screen.
He was there for several minutes and nothing happened. So I decided to try it again... and Im yet to try.

Support told me there is a problem with the bios, but since I can't access what it is, I can't update the bios.
I tried with an external monitor, with or without battery, with and without the HARD drive (bios must be accessible without).
    Always with the same result.
And as these things always happen after the expiration of the warranty.

The hardware seems to work (ok once a lot) and for strange behavior, I wonder if anyone had a similar experience or has a tip for me.

One of my friends has Satellite M40 and it's very nice for laptop. If possible try to connect your laptop to external monitor and just turn it on. It will be interesting to know if it works or not. If so, I assume that the display is faulty.

  • Satellite M40-237: CD Boot does not not + is possible startup USB key drive

    * Model: Satellite M40-237 (PSM40E) *.

I decided to reinstall windows, my hard drive is now formatted. So as usual, boot from the Windows CD is necessary to start the instalation but it does not start. I never had problems like this, always worked boot. It's as if there is no bootable CD in the drive (but it is bootable and it works on another PC).

-J' have the latest version of the BIOS
-The BIOS detects the optical drive and everything is ok, HARD is the ODD main drive is secondary
-J' tried selecting the boot priority, with F12 and/or the BIOS setting but it works anyway

What could be the problem here? Drive does not properly (hopefully, that and not something worse)? I had some problems with the drive I have (...) before, but it reads the disc normally and as I said start was working fine before. I cleaned the lens a bit, disconnected it and it put. Is there something more, what can I do?

I'll try to find someone who has the player that fits so I can try with that one, but who knows when is what will be.

Now, here's the second question, which I've linked to this. Because my laptop is practically useless now (I can't install anything), is it possible to boot from a:
    (a) optical drive USB external
    (b) USB flash drive

BIOS on this laptop has no USB boot option, it has HARD drive / CD / floppy / network. But I red somewhere this FDD = USB legacy emulation is enabled.

If that is correct, I should just plug in the USB key and select FDD as boot option? If I can't find a USB optical drive, I thought make it bootable USB flash drive and copy the installation of windows xp on it. So once it starts in DOS I start just the installer from the key.

    TNX

First I must say that the initialization of memory flash USB (USB key) is not possible and you shouldn't t waste time to try this.

With regard to your reader of CD/DVD boot problem
Well, it s really strange, it sounds a bit like a sort of master/slave/c-salt settings problem. But generally, you should get an error IDE (#0 or #1) if one of the devices (ODD or HARD disk) would not be recognized?  :|
    This whole thing seems mysteriously
There may be a firmware issue

Several months ago a friend of mine was not able to boot from the CD.
He went into the BIOS and set the BIOS default settings.
    This has contributed to

This is a suggestion, but I'm really putting t know if it helps.
