SBS 2003 migrating exchange 2003 to exchange 2010

Hello

It is possible o migrate from exchange 2003 on SBS 2003 to new windows server 2012 STD with exchange 2010, but does not move the FSMO rules to windows 2012? I can't downgrade SBS 2003 because I have an application that cannot be migrated from Small Business SERVER 2003.

    Nice day

3 months ago I installed Exchange Server 2010, now I need to recover a mailbox from a backup. The backup was performed while he was still Exchange 2003. I want to know is you can restore an old Exchange 2003 database in the Exchange 2010 recovery store, and if so what is the way forward. PS I use symantec backup exec 2010 R3 as backup software.

If it is not possible, is there any other way to retrieve mailbox information

-To perform the swing a third temporary server pc is required loads with Windows Server 2003 from SBS2003 and exchange Server 2003 media component

-The temporary pc in our case is a dell optiplex 745

-The problem is that the original SBS 2003 media is HP brand and that it will not install on the Dell server.

-Work around was to use a trial version of Windows Server 2003 that boats on the Dell, but this version will not allow the installation of Exchange Server 2003 to the SBS 2003 Media Disc 2.

-J' contacted Microsoft for an evaluation version of Exchange 2003, but it is now discontinued.

-Another work around to order a NO brand Media Kit of Small Business SERVER 2003, but Microsoft will not provide because my original media is OEM.

  • Migrate the virtual machine for Exchange 2010 from one host to another

    Dear members,

Please let know us if the migration of a virtual machine for Exchange 2010 is supported to an Esxi host to another, the Esxi version is 5.0.

There are unique Exchange environment with the role of hub, CAS and mailbox on the same virtual server. We have a maintenance window and we think moving exchange virtual machine from one host to another, but before that I need to be sure if it's supported my MS and do not want to have problems after, because I have also gotten to know here in the forums this snapshot for Exchange 2010 is not supported by Ms.

    Please notify.

    Kind regards

I'm not aware of any limitations with VMS Exchange migration. Anyway, you can consider running the migration during the low workload.

  • If it is Possible to change the log for Exchange 2010 running on Esxi 5 drive

    Dear Experts,

We are running exchange 2010 on Esxi 5, this Exchange 2010 has recently been installed and all the mailboxes have been transferred from exchange 2003 which was a physical server. At the time of migration in exchange 2010 we created newspapers drive 100 GB since big newspapers vmdk is generated when you migrate the mailboxes. As now migration is performed a few months back and now I observed for 2/3 weeks, the behavior of the reader of newspapers for a week only 5 GB is consumed in disk vmdk of newspapers, and that is also supplemented with a backup complete weekly to Exchange.

I intend to ask, is that I think have newspaper vmdk 30GB instead of 100 GB, so the current of 100 GB of log reader, I can't reduce, but yes, I can create vdisk another to swap, but need advice if anyone has a similar experience to change the disk vmdk of newspapers for the Exchange? With this approach, I try to save 70 GB of storage space.

I hope my question is clear.

Waiting for your answers with the thoughts.

    Thank you

Yes, you must stop the Exchange Services. But Exchange 2010 has a nice Wizard to do this, who can stop the database services, newspapers move automatically and back up the database.

It is located under the Organization-> mailbox

Leave the database, but only to change the path of the log file.

  • Server crashes every few minutes - HP ML350 G4 running SBS 2003

    Dear all,

We have a SBS 2003 server that has serious problems for a few weeks now. The problem is that the server hangs for a short period of time and comes back to life. Freeze happens several times per hour and lasts 50-60 seconds each time and then come back to life. During the freeze:

    • Users get the contextual ScreenTip in Outlook by saying that Exchange is trying to retrieve data.
    • Shared disks cannot be opened.
    • Data from the server recovery software also seem to be block/gel.
    • Desktop connection to the server remotely continues but cannot perform all actions (the mouse pointer moves but can't choose anything).
    • During the freeze period, the following events are generated in the system log:
    • Through logs event ID: 7011 always seems to be recorded at the time the freeze occurs. It is said, ' Timeout (60000 milliseconds) waiting for a response from the NtFrs service transaction'.
    • Also in the application log this error is found: event ID 17052 Source: MSSQLSERVER - Scheduler 0 (and other times 1) seems to be suspended. SPID 0, ECID 0, UMS 0x03640BC8 context

    • When the server is started, it takes 40 minutes on "computer application settings.
    • When the server is restarted or shutdown, it takes about 15-20 minutes.

    • The Task Manager shows the system idle process using 99% cpu.

    A bit on the server:

    OS: Windows SBS 2003 Premium Edition - SP2 with Exchange 2003 SP2, SQL 2000, SharePoint Services 2.0
    Hardware: HP ProLiant ML350 G4
    Smart Array 641 controller
6 x 146.8 GB HARD drive (10K rpm), configured in 3 logical drives
    RAID 1 + 0 is used
    x 1 Intel Xeon 3.0 GHz processor
4 GB of RAM installed - SBS 32-bit use only 3.5 GB

    Antivirus: CA Threat Manager

Backup: Tape using software of Yosemite

Diagnostics of hardware (using the diag HP tools) are no problem. Green LEDs appear on all hard drives 6. I have already updated all the device drivers and system firmware using the HP tools. HP Array Configuration Utility shows no problem at all. I've taken this with HP support, but eventually they said there is no hardware problems and I need to contact Microsoft.

    Help, please!

    Hello

I calculated that it started happening since I followed the CA Tech suggestion on how to fix the CA anti-virus on the server to allow users to save documents directly to readers shared network. Fix of CA has its side effects. Over a period of 2 months, there are more than half a million 4 KB files generated in the folder Temp of Windows. Now temp was so complete in terms of number of files that whenever server had to do anything at the time it would freeze. Windows wouldn't let me empty the temp folder. It does not yet show the files. Only, we could see and calculate the files in DOS mode. UBCD4Win served and slip streamed with Windows XP Setup program to create a bootable file. After starting the server on the boot media, all Temp files have been removed from command line. It took more than an hour only to delete all these files. After emptying the temp started server within 10-15 minutes.

Then, the next step was to find the program that has been the creation of 6 temporary files every minute. Explore processes and Process Monitor was used to identify the culprit. Is CA Host - based Intrusion Prevention Manager that was purchased as part of the package of threat Manager CA eTrust. It was found by using an instance of Java under a Wrapper process and the creation of hss_tmp * in C:\Windows\Temp .dat files. Disabling services CA HIPS resolved again filling of the temp. There is no problem of gel and server works very well.

Deactivation of all the CA package has not prevented the freeze occurs because the temp folder too cultivated was still in place and SBS OS was always access them as well stop on time.

I hope this can help someone in the future.

  • What operating system to use for Exchange 2010?

I'm currently in the planning/design phase of implementation of our new Exchange 2010 server.  Our current environment using Exchange 2003 on Windows Server 2003.

Exchange 2010 is 64-bit, I want to install Windows Server 2008 R2 64-bit, but my question is... do I install Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard or Enterprise?... What is the main difference between the 2 platforms, OS should I consider before decide me which one to go with?

I searched online for a while and can't seem to find a definitive answer to this question, or at least a logical explanation that would allow me to determine which is best for what I want.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    -Angel

The main difference between the medium Standard and Enterprise's clustering and memory. It was a big difference in Windows 2003, if you need more than 4 GB of memory. With Windows 2008 x 64 I think 16 GB of memory allows to use this grouping is the $ 64 question. You do cluster CCR or SCR with Exchange 2010?

  • In-Guest iSCSI for Exchange 2010

Hi, we just built and are ready to go into production with Exchange 2010 using LUNS in guest through the card Microsoft iSCSI initiator iSCSI separate network for iSCSI etc. Load tested with JetStress and everything seems fine. We just found out as snapshots are not supported with iSCSI in guest so we are concerned that the other things work or be taken in charge or another, i.e. of vmotion. So, does anyone know if we lose any other characteristic, and we need to change our minds and using ESX iSCSI? I read pieces on being comparable, that we stuck with a guest performance because that's what we know with our existing Exchange 2007 environment (physical). If we must change, is it simple?

Hey everyone who is following this thread or found via Google.  It is important to understand what is and is not supported when you are running Exchange on a virtual machine.

To be absolutely clear, combining Exchange 2010 DAG and migration technologies such as vMotion technology is supported.  You must ensure that you are running at least Exchange 2010 SP1 as well as a version of vSphere that sits on the server virtualization Validation program.

I think that the link was already posted, but here is the final link:

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/Exchange/archive/2011/05/16/announcing-enhanced-hardware-virtualization-support-for-Exchange-2010.aspx

More specifically, since the post above (in bold italics):

Combining Exchange 2010 high availability solutions (database availability groups (DAG)) with hypervisor clustering high availability and migration solutions that will be moving or automatically failover servers for mailboxes that are members of a DAG between clustered root servers, is now supported.

Improved, that we did in Exchange Server 2010 SP1, with more comprehensive tests of Exchange 2010 in an environment that is virtualized, we are pleased to offer this additional deployment flexibility to our customers. Management of updated support applies to any provider of hardware virtualization that participate in the Windows Server Virtualization Validation Program (SVVP).

Logiboy123, can you provide any documents to support the statement that Microsoft does not support this configuration?  The above quotes are directly from Microsoft and are very clear that they support not only the migration of Microsoft technology, but also similar to any other provider of the hypervisor technology, provided that they are in the SVVP program.

Since vSphere is part of the SVVP, Microsoft has extended support for the technologies of migration such as vMotion, in addition to their own Live Migration.  Of course, simply support something does not automatically make it works.  If you want knots vMotion DAG works correctly, you might have settings described in this blog post extended the cluster heartbeat timeout (also a fully supported configuration change):

    http://www.thelowercasew.com/vSphere-and-Exchange-Admins-can-live-in-harmony-Microsoft-finally-supports-HA-and-VMotion

To answer the original question in this post, using the Protocol in-guest iSCSI is supported and with vMotion in this configuration is supported as well.  You're not really 'give up whatever it is' using this configuration well so if it meets your needs, I would stick with it.  I prefer generally VMFS just because of the flexibility it offers, but all the world has different requirements and I have absolutely no problem with guest iSCSI if your organization requires it.

Do not forget that whatever configuration, snapshots of virtual machine are not supported for Exchange. Here is another post which goes into detail on it and cover the declaration of support for Microsoft Exchange 2010 snapshots and machine virtual: http://www.thelowercasew.com/virtual-machine-snapshots-and-tier-1-apps-not-always-supported

So in general, I would say that provided you are running the correct versions of Exchange and vSphere must then take full advantage of your configuration to use features like vMotion and HA without problem.  If you adjust your settings accordingly cluster heartbeat timeout, you should have no problem using vMotion with your knots of DAG.

  • Configuration of Exchange 2010

We are the conversion of Novell Groupwise to Exchange 2010 this spring and I have a few questions about what VMWare products, we apply the following.

1 being able to transfer server virtual exchange to another server Vsphere4.  I assume that you would use Vmotion, correct?

2 implement a DAG (direct bed group) on the initial period of the Exchange Server installation.   That's what I don't understand?  This is a copy of your database to exchange, correct?   In a failover on one VMware Server situation, what other/s of product are needed for the virtual server exchange to transfer on the Vsphere server roles to operate automatically.

    3. we are currently on VSphere 4, standard servers, what level do we need upgrade "Advanced" or "Business" in order to have this capacity?

I apolgize to my ignorance here, but we just to enter the virtualization and I'm certainly not to speed on all the virtual technologies!

    Thanks in advance

    TAndrist

I would like to clear a few things here...

1 Exchange of solutions of high availability with DAG is not similar to the DRS and HA... For DAG you are going to have two replicas (one active and one passive)... VMware HA... just migrate the virtual machine to another host it turn off and turn on/off it.

    2. for the implementation of high availability Exchange, you can configure it with MSCS in VMware (MSCS with Physical to Virtual) environment, MSCS with virtual to virtual, for more details on configuring MSCS in VMware... see http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40_u1/vsp_40_u1_mscs.pdf

    3. my installation works fine with virtual to virtual for quite some time... and I'm happy with it. If the answers to your questions...

«A. be able to transfer the server virtual exchange to another server Vsphere4.» I assume that you would use Vmotion, correct? »

Rep. : Using Vmotion you will be able to migrate Exchange VM to fly from one host to another host without any downtime.

"(B) to implement a DAG (direct bed group) on the initial period of the Exchange Server installation. That's what I don't understand? This is a copy of your database to exchange, correct? In a failover on one VMware Server situation, what other/s product are needed for the exchange server virtual roles of tranfer on the server Vsphere running automatically. »

Rep. : Yes, it is a copy of your Exchange database. You must have the license for VMware HA and Drs new VMware HA is different and DAG is different.

"C. we are currently on VSphere 4, standard servers, what level do we need upgrade"Advanced"or"Business"in order to be able to have this capability?

Rep. : From critical vCenter and Standard Edition we carry licenses for VMware HA and Drs goal once again, this will not fix your goal... you need to look for solution as MSCS.

    Hope I've answered your questions...
