See flickering on Satellite L640

Hello

Having a Satellite L640 with a corrupt flickering display - a lot of horizontal lines randomly.

A quick clip of the problem is here: [http://dl.dropbox.com/u/37870878/video-2012-11-17-11-04-46.mp4]

A fine external monitor functions, reboots do not help. I have not yet tried to take it apart to check the connections.

Of course, it's 7 months out of warranty!

Because an external display shows OK, I'll start by checking the connection of the cable from mobo, followed of a replacement inverter card. Other opinions gratefully received...

TIA

If everything works perfectly on external monitor the situation is clear: there is a problem with the cable connection or display.

Just a question: have you noticed this behavior from the first moments when the laptop is turned on?

If not, should what accessories I buy to get the Bluetooth functionality?

Can you please send us the complete laptop (L640-xxx) model name so that we can check the specs of the laptop on the Toshiba site.

What you can do is to check the list of installed programs in Control Panel > programs and features and check if the BT software is listed. Otherwise I think that your laptop is not BT
Another way to check is to use the FN + F8 key combination and see if there is option for WLAN only or BT is also offered. Laptop with BT have WLAN option only.

If you want to use BT with your laptop, you can buy the small stick USB BT, install the BT software and you will posibiity to connect external devices with yout laptop with BT connection.

  • How to reformat Satellite L640

Hello... I'm john julius... I have a question, please answer as soon as possible... how reformat toshiba satellite L640 using a c/dvd? and what is the start menu default settings, when I click on the f12... thank you and GodBless

If you have recovery DVDs or if you want to use Microsoft installation disc start Notepad and press F12 to get into the boot menu. When the boot menu appears on the screen, place the recovery in the optical disc drive disk, choose CD/DVD in the menu and press ENTER.
ODD will start to read the installation disc, and you need to do is just follow what's happening and menu on the screen.
    > what is the start menu default settings, when I click on the f12
There is not a kind of default settings. When you use F12, you will see listed bootable devices.
If you want to define which device must be the first or second botable feature you must do it in the BIOS settings.

If you have any other questions you are welcome.

  • Re: Satellite L640 - need to care about CPU upgrade

The question is simple: what are the specifications/model max CPU can I update in this laptop? Find any information on this line is a nightmare because most places don't know anything about my part number. It is not European or American.

I am in New Zealand. My exact part number is PSK0GA - 01 H 003. Satellite L640. Everything is stock factory parts aside from a new DC harness that is not totally related to that aside to show that I know what I'm doing when dismantling and replacement of parts in this laptop. I have no guarantee and am perfectly happy to do all the work and repairs on this myself at my own risk.

So I was online looking for the plug exact motherboard of this machine so I can see what I can put in level and what I can't. But I have found nothing that comes close to give me all of the actual characteristics. Is someone can you please tell me where I can find this information? I am wanting to CPU RAM and (if possible) the graphic information about replaceable chips. An i7 would be nice if I can run into that, but I'm not going to buy one and try it if it won't work in this machine.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Simple question simple answer: Toshiba doesn't support CPU updates so you will not be able to find some official specs about it. Better place o check it's Toshiba service provider in your country.

I mean, if anyone has any info on the equipment or upgrade Exchange and know-how is Toshiba service provider.
Because of specific and complex design cooling systems, these upgrades are deprecated.

  • How to install Win XP on Satellite L640

    Hello

    I have a Satellite L640 running windows 7.

I need to use a software which is software XP, so I want to install XP on the L640.
I have the Windows XP disc in the CD tray and I have chosen the CD/DVD as a source of start-up number 1 priority in the BIOS.

The computer does not start from the disc, but goes directly from Windows 7.
Is it possible to install Windows XP on this laptop?

I do something wrong, or maybe it is a defective drive?

    Thank you, David

As a general rule I don't see no reason why you shouldn't be able to install Windows XP Home edition, but what confuses me, is that you even could not start Windows XP Home edition Setup. Do you use the original disc of Microsoft?

Start your laptop and press F12 to get into the boot menu. Put the CD into the optical disk drive, choose the CD/DVD drive and press ENTER. The same thing happens again?

By the way: did you check the Toshiba download page if WXP drivers, tools and utilities are available for your laptop model?

  • Re: Upgrade of the BIOS in a Toshiba Satellite L640

Hi all, how is life. I have a Toshiba Satellite L640 with LUbuntu 12.10. My BIOS is v 1.70. I think I should update, because the latest version is 2.70 and he could solve some battery problems.

The problem is that the bios upgrade software for the toshiba site is only for Windows. He is not yet back, in this case I could start from a USB Pendrive with FREEDos installed and do the upgrade.

Then, someone knows some way? I read you try to run the upgrade through wine application is not recommended. Also, I guess that it is not advisable to pass by VMWare, but I don't know about it.

Of course, I have no system to dual-boot, just Lubuntu Qantal.

    Thanks in advance

You are right. Toshiba offers WIN version only, so it cannot be used with Linux or by using the external device as BACK up to date.

What problems do you have with the battery?

  • Satellite L640 - Eco Utility does not work

I have a Toshiba Satellite L640 and I just bought 2 weeks ago.

I use the Eco utility a lot and recently Eco utility stopped working, can someone help me please?

    Hey,.

This means that if you press the Eco button Utility, that nothing is happening and your laptop doesn t switch eco mode?

Hmm. It is probably related to the utility eco himself. In your case I would try reinstalling this tool. You can download it from the Web from Toshiba site.
But before installing the new version, delete the old and restart your laptop.

  • Satellite L640 - clock stuck CPU idle time

Hi people, I have a Satellite L640 PSKOLA, with a processor i5 480M and am under Win7 64 bit, I have a "CPU usage" widget on the desktop, because clearly, I'm kinda a nerd. I first noticed this problem for a long time, but my usage has changed more things graphics lately and if it interferes with what I'm doing now.

The clock on the CPU freezes at 1173 MHz, this happens only after the machine has been for a while and will be rectified by doing a reset, after which the clock fortunately returns a maximum of 2667 MHz and the changing dynamic clock works as it should, and I enjoy my machine once more, until it happens again which could be any time, but it usually takes at least a couple of hours.

I hoped that would fix it, install the latest drivers but that didn't work, I reinstalled the version 2.3 BIOS update (the more recent on the toshiba site) and I installed it three times because I thought it might have been a glitch there.

    Any ideas?

    > On the CPU clock freezes at 1173 MHz, this only occurs after the machine sat for awhile

How did you test this? Have you tested this using the CPU on the desktop gadget?
Are you sure that this software works correctly? I think that no one should trust a single value provided by a program/utility.
Use of different tools which can give different results

However, the fact is that i5 480M processor supports Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology.

This technology allows the processor clock speed to be changed dynamically. This reduces to a minimum power draw and heat dissipation.
A processor running at a high clock speed allows better performance.
Using the same processor at a lower frequency (speed), it generates less heat and consumes less energy. This is controlled by the Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology.
I think this may be one of the reasons for this different CPU speed (perhaps the main reason).

  • Seeing white on Satellite Pro A200

The screen of my computer (Satellite Pro A200 - PSAE7) became white and will not normalize. This happens as soon as the boot. However, other processes are underway normally. Currently, I have to rely on an external monitor or LCD projector to allow me to continue my work.

What could be wrong and what can do?

    Hey,.

    > Currently I have to rely on an external monitor or LCD projector to allow me to continue my work.
This means that an external monitor works properly, no?

Well, there are two possible reasons: either the internal LCD screen is defective or LCD cable but the graphics card and the software are ok if everything works on an external monitor.

You see a picture if you move the internal screen a little? So, you can check if there is a bad connection. If you are familiar with the disassembly of the laptop, you can open Notepad and check the connection also.

An alternative you can also ask a maintainer approved assistance. Disassembly of the laptop is not a problem for guys so just get in contact with them. ;)

  • Screen flickering on Satellite X 200 - 21 k

    Hello!

I bought by Satellite X 200 - 21 k about 2 months ago and I don't have any problems with it so far. Yesterday, while I was doing some work on my laptop and I noticed that the screen started flickering. With twinkle, the screen brightness was going lower and lower, and at one point, it was really dark. I plugged in and out the power cable and the screen changed its brightness while I was doing that. At one point, my left side of the screen was completely black, while the right one was very dark. I restarted computer 3 times and it happened again and again and again. After another reboot, the screen went well. Now, while I write this everything is normal, but I'm still worried about it.

Do you have any tips for me? You may know the reason why this is happening? Could this be a virus? What is a power cable? Graphics card? :(

    Kind regards

    User of satellite X 200-21 k

    Hello

    > You may know the reason why this is happening? Could this be a virus? What is a power cable? Graphics card?

-Problem of virus-> don t think that this issue could be caused by a virus or malware
-Power cable-> maybe, but I would tend to the issue of the monitor.

There is a simple procedure to test if the graphics card is malfunctioning or not.
You can try to connect the laptop to the external display and could test whether the same question appears on the screen external, second.
If the same appear on the external monitor, then chances are that the GPU is defective.

But if the question doesn't appear on the external monitor, then the portable computers internal display is faulty or the small part as the FL inverter begins to malfunction.

However, it looks like a hardware problem and a hardware problem should be always checked by a SPA who is responsible for your country.

    Bye good luck

  • Satellite L640 hangs at the splash screen

    Hi all

I have a L640 / 01 H that I bought earlier this year. In addition to the original Windows 7 OS, I installed a Linux system on a separate partition.

Earlier today, I was using Linux (which is what I normally use) and everything was really slow.
    Finally I force-shut-down, power button.

Now, I noticed a problem with the BIOS on this laptop - if I try to start when there is a USB flash drive is connected, the splash screen just hangs. Today when I rebooted I realized that I had left a flash drive, then I got out and I tried to start it again, a couple of times. Whenever the computer crashes just indefinitely on the startup splash screen.

Finally I gave him enough time and it takes the selection of Linux boot menu, so I tried to start my usual kernel but he gave me some message about a bad MBR.
I kept trying to start, but the boot process is stuck, what happens is as follows:

    * The three lights on the left (power, battery and light) come on, no problem
    * HARD drive flashes white for a few seconds, then turns off. Occasionally, it will blink again.
    * At the same time, the screen is just stuck on the startup splash screen. If I try to press f2, f12 or any key too many times it will start emitting beeps whenever I press it. There is no way to get into the BIOS settings.

Also, I can't boot from CD (Windows recovery CD or Linux LiveCD). Finally some kind of time-out of the entry into force, and the computer restarts itself to start the process all. Yay!

I tried the stuff "unplug the power cord, remove the battery, hold down the power button / stop, plug back in, try to start" but nothing has changed. I also tried switching memory locations (only one chip of RAM, so I can't try a process of elimination on the RAM).
Finally, I also open the door to HARD disk and removed the HARD drive, then tried to start. This time the BIOS has answered, if only to tell me that there is no appropriate boot media. At this point, the BIOS was responsive and I could change settings in there, but I could not boot from the CD.

I thought I'd try resetting the CMOS battery, but I'm worried I'll damage something / make the problem worse. Someone at - it ideas? I know that the thing is still under warranty, but service centres are often slow and I don't want to lose the data from the hard drive.

Any help would be really appreciated.

It could be a problem with the CD/DVD drive what you think of this idea?
Perhaps the BIOS does not recognize the CD/DVD drive properly and so there is a problem starting the bootable disc.

In addition, it might be possible that failures of HARD drive and, therefore, you received an error message about the MBR (master boot record).

Remove the CD/DVD drive and try to install the Windows booting from a USB flash drive.

    _Regarding the battery CMOS: _
I would not recommend to disassemble the laptop because you could damage other parts and in addition it should know that the CMOS battery is not removable it s soldered to the motherboard

  • Screen flickering on Satellite L350D-213

I had problems with my screen flicker in and out.
He only started today and only shortcuts for a few seconds every 20 minutes.
Could this be my past backlight? or would it be an easy problem to solve?

For me, it's like something serious.
Can you please start your laptop and enter the BIOS settings.

Leave the laptop for a while and watch if the flickering will occur again.
Test also with safe mode and let us know exactly what is happening.

I'm not a technician but I'm afraid that there is a technical problem if blinking persists even in BIOS mode.
