Selection of Windows Explorer F3 Search options?

After you select one of my hard drives in Windows Explorer, when I then search of F3, the results I get are often very confused (many reported files contain the search string to ASCII in the name of the file, or the contents of the file).

Is there a way to control/tell the search engine if I want that he

(a) matching in the only file names?

(b) searching for matches in the content of the file only?

(c) search for matches in the filenames or content of this file?

It's particularly frustrating when I'm looking for a specific file, including a file extension. For example, a F3 Search for "hal.dll" gives a bunch of files, not just the one and only I'm looking for the "hal.dll" file. It's like the F3 research addresses the 'point' which separates it from the file name of the file as an OR logical operator extension.

You can try using different filters, honestly, I've never had problems finding what I want using Windows Search.

For example, you could search for "hal.dll" in one of the following ways:

Name: = Hal.dll

-The equal sign after the filter name: means Windows will only look for exact matches

name: hal ext:dll

-This would find all the files where the string hal appears in file name with extension dll

  • Windows Explorer: Files & grayed out after Trojan Virus deleted folders

Lucky me some site I went to via an alert Google downloaded a virus and I had to restore my Dell PC to factory settings. In any case, I keep all my data on 2 external hard drives, so I didn't lose data on the C:\ drive.

So, everything is 'back to normal' but one of my external hard drives, a Maxtor 3200, exploring with Windows Explorer showed no top file until I selected in Windows Explorer, the option 'To see the hidden files' - now I can see and even access to files and folders, but they are all grayed out when displayed in Windows Explorer. I reread the Maxtor and AVG shows as own. Any help is greatly appreciated!
    David

When you choose to show hidden files, then any file or folder that is hidden will appear gray as you describe.  What you need to do is to display the files and folders.  You can do this by right-clicking the file or folder, select 'Properties' and uncheck 'hidden '.  Another method is to open a command window (start-> run-> "cmd") and use the "attrib" command to show files and folders.

Maybe I'm missing something in the settings or the basic settings.

I found the answer. It's for Windows 7:

    Windows Explorer\Tools\Folder Options\View ~.

Uncheck the first line - "always show icons, never thumbnails".

If you look in the correct folder, and use the correct file name, you would be able to find regedt32.exe:

There was formerly a difference between regedit.exe and regedt32.exe but since Windows XP, when you start regedt32.exe, it ends up running regedit.exe:
