Separate disk for paging / Swap File / virtual memory - persistent or not persistent?

I want to spend my swap file Windows XP on a virtual disk separate to make the virtual machine smaller and easier to save.

Choose an independent persistent or not persistent independent drive?

1. Add drive - the persisted value

2. start VM - format the new disk and pagefile set

3 new VM boot - now Windows begins to use the pagefile - do nothing and stop again

4. now edit the vmdk and pagefile.vmdk the value nonpesistant properties

5 fact

Read the reference and successful links to get my confused self on the setting of the page file / virtual memory.

Some please can you model which is best practices.

for example. can I set up a swap file on all drives, including the system disk?

    Craig,

When you configure a Windows system, a managed dynamic swap file is created on the startup disk. The disadvantages are mainly two things:

    1. the fragmentation of the pagefile, reducing performance, and

    2. several requests on the same hard disk access, which reduces performance.

In general, it is better to have dedicated disks for dedicated tasks that access to each disk, so the OS on 1 disk, pagefile on another disk, support on another disk, presents a preview on another one, etc..

When you set up a new facility with newly formatted discs, I believe it is preferable to use another drive for the paging file that is static, and it's the first thing I do. This will mean that it is the first file created on the separate disk and will be located on the fastest part of the disk. Making public static, means that there will be no fragmentation.

There is a golden rule to set the size of your pagefile to about 1.5 times the physical memory, but this dating from the time when 4 GB memory was already huge. With 12 GB of memory the norm these days, it is meaningless to make the pagefile over 8 to 12 GB. This will depend on your usual workflow. If you used to have a lot of open applications, working in the shadows, AE make, SOUL a great file queue handling, editing in PR, all by building a disc in FR and switching back and forth between the AU and PR, all at the same time, you should probably increase this figure.

IMO, it is not advantageous to use of swap files on multiple disks. In my case, with 12 G of memory, I use a swap file static single of 8 G on a raid0 of two disks. I never needed more than about 4 G max of this space.

  • Computer configuration virtual for SRM - files from memory Swap file/Virtual - best practice replication?

Hello, I am very new to the model DR VMWare and have a few persistent questinos.

What is the recommended best practice re: virtual computers invited windows and virtual memory files.  I think it would be unnecessary to replicate these changing data on the DR site.  I have several virtual machines with 6-8gig memory and I'm just wondering how can I isolate the ESX memory swap files and virtual memory in Windows feedback, so they get not replicated on the Dr site as often as changing os/data.  If it's even necessary to replicate.

We use vspere vcenter 4.1 related modes, RS 4.1 the two on-site Cellera NX4 ReplicatorV2.

I wonder if I can install the files of pages to be in a condition NOT replicated file system or a file system which is the only value replicates every 24 hours, or once a week.

My reasoning here is.  Once the file is there, the operating system really cares about the changes in this file and dumps windows virtual memory on a restart, as well as the .vswp file.

what I mean is built on a virtual disk full and placing the windows file on this virtual disk to Exchange.  This virtual disk could exist in a data store hosted on a celerra file system that does not get repeated as frequently as data/OS file systems.

or am I completely off base here.

I think that if you tried to reproduce these files and maintain a sync time minute 10, you would need a ton of bandwidth.

any suggestions or recommendations or even pointers to Articles/items worth points = D.

    Thanks for your time.

Given that the configuration is made at the level of the cluster and has no impact on the SRM, replication is not a factor.  Don't forget, not to replicate the LUNS with the swap, just files have a LUN configuration on the side of recovery as well and have this defined cluster Exchange files.  Also, on the virtual machine critical we define reservations memory so the pagefile is not a factor at all.

    Kind regards...

When you buy a new HP DL360 with ESXi embedded you need hard to host a file of any nature or can the server work without local disks at all?

    See you soon.

Hi, Local storage is not required. You can create the SWAP file on the external data store. Please go through the link http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vmware_esxi_architecture_wp.pdf (number of page 4). See you soon!

  • What to do with free mini PCIe - Flash for the swap file

    Hello

in my T500, there is a free mini near the location of SIM location PCIe, but that's only half of length. I found an SSD at SuperTalent in these Dimensions. Someone out there who has tried to use this slot for storage, for example $TEMP or swap file?

    Kind regards

    Ronny

It will not work. This SSD is designed for the Dell Mini 9, which uses a special type of mini PCI-e slot [FLASH_CON]. This slot machine is connected to a PATA or SATA controller on the motherboard.

The DSS will not work on PCI-e standard minis housing because they are not connected to a PATA or SATA controller.

I think that half height mini PCI-e slot is used for Intel Turbo Memory.

Assuming that you have enough free disk space on the host ESXI 5.1 data store, I suggest you that you load the multiextent module as shown in the link, I posted and then clone the virtual disk using the vmkfstools command line utility.

    vmkfstools 'Windows w2k3.vmdk'-i 'clone.vmdk' slim-d - an ide

    vmkfstools EI 'Windows w2k3.vmdk' 'old.vmdk '.

    vmkfstools EI "clone.vmdk" "Windows w2k3.vmdk".

The first line of the clones of the virtual disk in a virtual drive put in service end format, and the following two lines renaming virtual disks, so that you can delete the "old*.vmdk" files once the VM works as expected.

Alternatively, you can also run the commands on the host ESXi 4.1 and then copy the new files hard again to avoid loading the multiextent module in the new host.

    Hello

As services are corrupted, you can perform in-Place Upgrade (repair install) and check.
The detailed procedure is suggested in the following link.

How to perform an upgrade on the spot on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 R2

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/2255099

Warning: Before you perform an upgrade in-place, you must be prepared for the worst scenarios that led to your existing data on your computer being deleted. These data include data personal, settings, information about the hardware and software drivers. In case of a worst case scenario, you may have to reinstall all the programs. Make sure that you back up personal data to disks or other external storage devices before performing an upgrade on the spot.

    I hope this helps.

  • Prepare disks for ASM (data files and FRA)

I intend to place data files on a disc 1 (sd1) and disk2 (PSD) when the backup of files (FRA) on disk3 (SDC). Here's how I'd do:

    For data files
Disk1 is divided into a single primary partition (with native Linux what ID 83 not formatted system)
Disk2 is also divided into a single primary partition (with native Linux ID 83 system not formatted)

    oracleasm createdisk vol1/dev/sda1
    oracleasm createdisk vol2/dev/sdb1

    CREATE DISKGROUP DATA EXTERNAL vol1, vol2 REDUNDANCY;

    For backup FRA

    Disk3 is partitioned into four primary partitions: / Boot (ext3), / (ext3), swap (swap) and /u01 (ext3)

The FRA will be put under the/U01 and then attend the ASM:

    oracleasm vol3/dev/sdc4 createdisk
    CREATE DISKGROUP DATA EXTERNAL vol3 REDUNDANCY;

Now, the problem. (1) the/U01 has already be formatted in ext3; (2) Oracle (DBMS) software will also be place under/U01

    It will be a problem?

Otherwise, I can put FRA on the same drive as the data files, i.e. on disk1 and disk2. In this case, I need to partition the disk 1 in two primary parititions sda1 and sda2 (native Linux system ID 83 not formatted), one for data files and another for FRA (do the same for disk2). The downside is that the data file and the file recovery will be on the same hard drive.

    Please offer some suggestions.

    Thank you

    Scott

PS: in the environment of production, all the disc 1, 2 and 3 will be on hardware RAID 1.

RAID 1 will protect you only a device failure. It won't protect you partition, the file damage system or user errors; It will be in the image of the errors and problems like any other data.

So what happens if you delete by mistake / U01 or some other accident happens and you loose that partition? With your current setup, you will lose everything and will not be able to restore or recover the database. Put tablespaces FRA and DB on the same physical device is certainly a very bad idea, whether or not it is a RAID.

ASM is not a software RAID 1 mirror. It ensures redundancy of data based on file extensions and knows about files of Oracle database, which is a very good thing. You probably do not want to specify 'external redundancy.

In a production system, you'll certainly want to mux the critical data and to store the DB controlfiles, redo logs and finally archivelogs on media separate physically in order to avoid the single point of failures wherever possible. You can use partitions and volumes in ASM, but they should be separate physical drives, otherwise you will bypass the ASM data redundancy. You must also have a solid strategy for RMAN backup. The FRA is supposed to store backupsets RMAN, copies of the image, the important archivelogs and multiplexes of the copies of the database files and should therefore always on a separate physical disk.

Unless you simply play, I strongly suggest that review you your current configuration.

  • How to increase disk for/tmp space in virtual machine?

    People,

Hello. I use VM Player 3. My host computer is Windows 7 and VM is Oracle Linux 5.10.

When I copy a virtual machine host machine (1.2 GB) file, the error message appears:

"Unable to write file in Virtual Machine.Aborting the copy file operation."

To be able to copy the file into the virtual machine, it takes about 2 GB of disk space free for the folder/tmp.

I cleaned all the files in the directory/tmp which is now empty. After that, I ran the cammand:

    $df h/tmp

    Its output:

    File system: / dev/map/VolGroup00-LogVol00

    Dimensions: 95G

    Used: 90G

    Available: 48 M

    : Use 100%

    Mounted on: /.

As you see above, it has only 48 M free disk space, the file size is 1.2 GB to copy.

    My question is:

How to increase disk space for "available: 48" to the directory/tmp in VM Oracle Linux 5.1 so that can copy the file?

    Thanks in advance.

The log files are rotated. You have only the *.log files, but the former obsolete log files too. Are named name.log001 name.log002 and so on.

Check out some of the files you found the log files and remove turned the oldest logs first. Once you have deleted a couple check if cela disk space savings.

In theory, you can remove all of the log files, but be careful that no server component runs when you do that. Otherwise the logging stops until you stop and restart the component. If you are not sure if something is running, start with swivelled out newspapers.

Hi all! How can I copy a virtual disk file to a location for future use by another virtual machine? I tried to just copy the hard, but it did not work for me - the copy is about 1 KB size and I can not add it as a hard drive on another virtual machine. Can someone help me?

OK, so this client web vSphere that you use, in this case browse datastore doesn't show you the two files.

    Please follow the steps below

Please go to Cluster & host inventory

    Select your ESXi host

go to the tab 'Manage'-> settings-> Security-> Service Profile, and then click the button CHANGE

    Start the SSH service.

If please use WinSCP to connect to your Esxi host and navigate to the folder of the virtual machine as in the screenshot to the suite, I navigated to a folder that is my VM name: Win10A

and it has a virtual disk, if I want to take the virtual disk of this virtual machine to a different VM, I need to copy the two files that are highlighted.

the two are to train your virtual disk.

Download these two files and download them to another folder where you second VM resides, then try to tie it with this virtual machine.

  • Disable virtual memory?

I use Vista 64 bit. The amount of RAM: 6 GB. I think 6 GB is big enough, so I can disable virtual memory? Thanks for reading.

    Hi quantan,

6 GB is a high amount of RAM and should be more than enough for most people.  However, if you happen to use it at the same time having several applications open, a swap file (virtual memory) will help to keep your system from grinding to a halt or the slightest mistake.  The paging file can be customized or removed all together.

In the same place that you set the minimum and maximum page file size, there is a possibility to do not use a.

Note that Microsoft recommends that you do not disable or delete the paging file.
