Windows 7 desktop icons will not work by clicking double to left

HP laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit).

Double left clicking on items on the desktop does not work.  To open the program I have to right click the icon, then click 'OPEN' in the menu dropdown.

Double left clicking on works on the status bar at the bottom of the screen.

Probably a switch has been triggered - but where?

I should welcome any hepatitis!

Thank you very much

Have you tried to go to customize and change your theme?  Maybe redefine things will help the issue.  You can also try re - install (or looking for a newer version of) your graphics card driver.  You can normally find this by going to the manufacturer of your computer site, click Help, and then by entering your model number.

XP... The desktop icons will not put. I did a lot of research on this issue, read the different responses on many forums, including and have tried much of the recommendations... I'm not familiar with the functions of establishment of the arrangement of the desktop icon and this is the first time I met this kind of problem. Hi kipepeoliciousslemani,

This problem occurs because of a missing or corrupted Rundll32.exe file. This problem can also be caused by a virus.

Follow the steps listed in the article for this problem:

  • Several desktop icons do not work on XP

Most of the icons on the desktop will not work. Internet Explorer works and all my web programs. Can download programs, but they will not run.

None of the programs execution function as regedit. I have a list of orders execution and none work. Some things will work in safe mode. Programs are not

work to start / all programs either. When you click on an icon the hourglass comes on for a split second and then turns off.

I suggest running command prompt and type:

    sfc/scannow

and then press enter and let scan to proceed, and then restart your PC, see if the problem is resolved. If this isn't the case, follow the structure on:

  • the desktop icons do not work

All the icons and even folders do not work when I click on them.  If I right click on the icon or the folder it open quickly as before.

Is there an associated process that should run to facilitate icons to work?

    Hi DelZavala,

There are several things to try, and I recommend doing them in the order presented.

If you can access the internet somehow, if you use XP, go to http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm and scroll to the EXE and click, or double-click it to run the program to restore EXE file associations. Once done, do the same for LNK entry. That should restore your programs.

If it does not (although it does in general), try the following article (which is essentially what precedes, but made by hand): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923077.

Try a clean boot in XP http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316434. If the problem goes away then it's just a matter of tracking down the culprit at the origin of the problem. Follow the procedures described in the article. Once found, remove, delete, disable or uninstall. Once don't forget to reset your system back to the normal state, as described in the procedures. If the problem occurs in clean mode then just restore the system to normal and reboot - this solution will not work.

If this problem started recently, try a system restore to a point before the problem.  Here are the steps for XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084.

I hope this helps. Otherwise, back post and we will look at in other less likely but possible options such as infection or corruption of system files - but I honestly think one of the above will do the trick for you.

    Good luck!

  • The text on the Windows Paint program icon does not work

I use Vista and do not know if this is the reason why the text icon does not work. All other icons work. Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

    Hi bipsvic,

Since when are you facing this problem?
    If it works well before?

I suggest that you want to run the file system (CFS) Checker scan that might help you to solve the issue.
To determine if the problem you are experiencing is caused by one or more system files that are used by Windows Vista, run the System File Checker tool. The System File Checker tool analyzes the system files and replaces incorrect versions of system files by using the correct versions.

To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start and type cmd in the box start the search.
    2. right click on cmd in the list programs and then click Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type your password or click on continue
    3. at the command prompt, the following line, and then press ENTER:
     sfc/scannow

When the analysis is complete, test to see if the problem you are experiencing is resolved. If the problem you are experiencing is not resolved, use the procedure that is described in the section "the System Restore tool.

Follow the instructions in the link below for more information on scan SFC.
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/936212/

Check whether the problem is resolved.

If this does not work, you can try to create the new user account by following the instructions in the link below and check if it works.
