Should an Airport Express put dish to work properly?

Ludovic bought an Airport Express to use to expand the WiFi network created by my Time Capsule. Implementation has been virtually automatic. Well done Apple!

Ideally, I would like to repair the Airport Express is on one end, and instead placed flat on its base on a shelf/desk. Can anyone tell if it is OK or should the Airport Express really be laid flat on its base. Thank you.

You can change the radiation pattern is by doing this, I have no idea what happens in your area. Try it.

  • 12.3.3.17 iTunes could not connect to devices AirPlay (Airport Express)

After the update to iTunes 12.3.3.17 I can connect is more to Apple Airport Express.

I updated iTunes to 12.3.3.17 on both computers:

    1. Windows 7 64-bit SP1 / iTunes 12.3.3.17 64-bit

    2 Windows 10 64 - bit / iTunes 12.3.3.17 64-bit

On the Windows 10 computer, iTunes can connect and play all three Airport Express.  An iPod Touch can also flow to each of them.

After the upgrade to 12.3.3.17 on the Windows 7 SP1 computer, iTunes can see all three Airport Express and they are not greyed out.  But when an any of them are selected in the dialog of speaker, iTunes tries to connect and after 30 seconds results in the error "an error occurred when connecting to the device AirPlay"xxx". The network connection timed out' and the selection is then grayed out.

The network card on this PC, the router, and all three Airport Express everything seems to work properly as I can deliver on all of them using software third 'wing' with other applications as the source.  I can also control iTunes on the PC wirelessly from iPod with the Remote app.

I just can no longer spread to one of the Express from the airport directly from iTunes after the 12.3.3.17 update.

    Any thoughts?

Well, problem solved (mostly) by a lot of trial and error and it turns out be a problem of WF on the UDP ports must be open for Hello.  It was a bit of a surprise, because the Airfoil program (third party utility AirPlay) uses also Hello (that works).

The Windows Firewall has a rule entry of inbound traffic for Hello to port 5353 UDP.  Changing the rule to allow all Ports (UDP) does the job.  So I studied what UDP ports were actually necessary for the Hello and Airplay and amended the rule again, this time replacing all Ports with these specific UDP port numbers: 554 (1900), 5289 5298, 5350, 5351, 5353, 49159, 49163

However, that did not yet work so I ended up coming back to the all Ports configuration.

If someone uses the firewall native Windows (preferably Windows 7, but probably the same for 8 and 10), I would be interested to know what UDP ports allows your Windows Hello firewall.

Control Panel > Windows Firewall > advanced settings > inbound rules > Hello

I had certainly not changed firewall settings before this update to iTunes (and AirPlay worked just hours before) and know not why the update seems to have changed the Windows Firewall settings, but that helps to explain why the Windows 10 computer worked fine after the update, because she was using the McAfee Security Suite firewall.

    Thank you!

  • How to configure a printer without wire of Canon (MG4150) to the Airport Express

In my living room, I have a cable modem that is configured in Bridge mode. On the first floor in a room, I installed an Airport Express station. Everything works well except my printer Canon (MG4150) does not work. What is the solution for my problem?

This Canon printer supports wireless connectivity, should just be configured to connect to the wireless network provided by the AirPort Express. Is not the way you currently put in place?

  • Using the Airport Express Terminal as a bridge

I would like to get video Amazon on my older Blu - ray player.  I was wondering if I could use my old AirportExpress (1st generation) as a bridge.  Now my new Comcast modem connects to my Time Machine that gives me my wireless connection. I tried to connect to the airport & connecting to my Blu - ray via ethernet cable, but I just get a flashing yellow light and the DVD on the screen tells me just the internet connection failed. Is this possible?

Now my new Comcast modem connects to my Time Machine that gives me my wireless connection.

I think that you wanted to say that you have a Time Capsule that produces the signal of your wireless network, correct? (Time Machine is a software on your Mac used to back up the Mac on another hard drive).

I was wondering if I could use my old AirportExpress (1st generation) as a bridge.

In 'bridge', do you mean you want the AirPort Express to receive a wireless signal of the time and then wireless Capsule to deliver one Ethernet signal to the DVD player?

The answer is 'yes' to the offer that you really have a 1st generation AirPort Express. To check, look for the model number on the side of the Express in the small print. It starts with an "A" followed four digits.  A 1st Gen AirPort Express is A1264 model number.  What is the number that you see?

I tried to connect to the airport & connecting to my Blu - ray via ethernet cable, but I just get a flashing yellow light and the DVD on the screen tells me just the internet connection failed

Assuming you have a 1st Gen Airport Express, the device must be set up and configured to work with time Capsule. The AirPort Express doesn't quite work simply by plugging.

  • Airport Express stops working after that put 7.7.7 upgraded to Time Capsule

I was able to update my firmware for my Time Capsule airport, but now my two devices Airport Express, which gave me "an unexpected error has occurred", seem to be in 'brick' and I can not even time Capsule to recognize after a reset.  I even spent my firmware to see if that was the problem... nothing.  Please help

At this point, is the time Capsule still loaded with an earlier version of the firmware or is it still in 7.7.7? Nevertheless, I would say that you do a ' default ' reset on each of the affected AirPort Express base stations to their "out-of-the-box" configurations

Depending on your answer to the first question, we can proceed from there.

  • I use a VPN in AirPort Express. I've updated firmware for 7.7.7 and DNS assigned by my VPN does not work anymore. Upon entry, the icon 'internet' in utility Airpot turns brown, and the internet stops completely. Anyone have any idea?

Why my internet connection dies? I use a VPN to my internet at home. I put the DNS numbers supplied by the company VPN in my airPort extreme, which, in turn, provides wireless for home. It worked perfectly until I updated to firmware 7.7.7. Suddenly the green light next to the 'internet' in airport Utility icon went Brown, and it is therefore most all internet. I put numbers in DNS to my ISP, and internet provider is displayed again. All the other numbers in DNS, whether it's Google, OpenDNS or VPN to stop the dead from the internet. Anyone has an idea about this?

Airport base stations, are at best, a VPN-well past that device. It is a server or a VPN client. Upgrade to the latest firmware does not change this fact.

To create a VPN tunnel using the AirPort Express Terminal, your computer must be running a VPN client that connects to a VPN server somewhere on the Internet. What DNS servers you use should make no difference with VPN.

If the ISP-supplied DNS servers do not work, I would say that you contact your ISP to find out why they don't allow you to use them.

What we need to study is more why you lose Internet connectivity when changing the DNS servers of your ISP. Please check with them and to report back, then we can try to help.

  • put Airport Express before or after the switch?

Believing that it is preferable to wire as much of my LAN House as possible, I ran ethernet in all the House of my office (where desktop computer, printer and modem/router DSL reside) in my living room (Roku, Apple TV, etc. where).  The living room is also where wireless laptops, iPads, generally used smartphones.   So I'll have a (Netgear GS205) switch in the living room and an Airport Express station.  It doesn't matter if readers (of the office) ethernet switch, which results in turn the Roku, ATV and Airport Express?  Or better to attach the ethernet to EI and continue the switch port LAN on EI?

Any reason, that I should consider to put the modem/router in the lounge and the switch in the Office?

Netgear GS205 is a Gigabit Ethernet switch, so it will load 1 000 Mbit/s connections.  The AirPort Express has only 100 Mbit/s Ethernet ports, so if you plug the Ethernet cable from the Office to the AirPort Express, and then connect the switch to the LAN port on the Express, the ability of the switch 1 000 Mbit speed <-->/ s will move to 100 Mbit / s for all connected devices.

All wireless on the Express will also drop up to 100 Mbps.  So, you might think that you have a 300 Mbps wireless connection, but this connection will drop up to 100 Mbit/s, through the Express.

Not too exciting, but not a killer in the face if all devices that need to connect to the switch are only 100 Mbps devices compatible.

It would be better wiring practice to connect the Ethernet feed from the office to the Gigabit Ethernet switch and then connect devices to the switch. Here, I guess that the Ethernet feed office is actually Gigabit Ethernet to 1 000 Mbit/s.  1 000 Mbps or Gigabit Ethernet ports should use any modem/router of good quality.

If the modem/router that feeds the switch is only 100 Mbit/s capable, then you can connect things like what you want since the maximum speed on the network will never be above 100 Mbps in any case... and the Gigabit Ethernet switch will work on only 10% of its capacity.

  • AirPort Express 'expand' works not

I just got a new AirPort Express Terminal 2nd gen and I'm trying to expand the network. We do not have an Extreme or Time Capsule. AirPort utility happens me an error stating that "this AirPort base station could not extend the wireless network. Make sure the wireless network you are trying to expand has been implemented and works correctly, you have entered a password for wireless network corresponding to this device, and that this device is in range of the wireless network". The network works fine. The password is correct for you. My phone is connected to the network, and the airport is connected by ethernet. Why is this happening? How should I do?

Sorry, but "Extend a wireless network" feature Apple's patented and designed to work only with another router from Apple if you try to use the AirPort Express Terminal to expand the wireless network.

With a router not Apple, the Express can expand the network, but it will wired Ethernet wired, permanent access to the main router.

  • Airport Express works with iPod Hifi?

I have iPod Hifi and I would like to buy Airport Express to make them wireless and play the songs of Mac and iPhone. Would this work? What else do I need? Also the wifi extending functionality would work fine too?

    Thank you for your time.

The iPod Hi-Fi is not a loan AirPlay device. However, it has a 3.5 mm analog/digital audio input port that can be connected to an AirPort Express Terminal for reading iTunes stream from either the Mac or iPhone.

Note: Both the Express and the iPod Hi-Fi built in DAC to convert to digital-to-analog audio sources.

With respect to the extension of Wifi, the wireless router to be extended with the Express should be another Apple product: Express Extreme and Time Capsule.

  • Airport Express has stopped working

I've had my Express for about 8 years now and it has continued to become slower and slower for a wireless internet connection. I tested the speed with a speed test wireless online and on-line decision-making. Direct I get around 50MBPS and through the Express, I received only around 10 Mbps. I did this test a few days ago! Yesterday my Mac couldn't even recognize it even if the light on the Express was green. It of time for a new wireless router, or is there something I can do to solve the problem?

Older versions of the AirPort Express had a useful life expectancy, on average, about 3-4 years.  5 years of use was much better than the average, so if you're 8 years old, you should Pat yourself on the back for your very good luck and reward yourself with a new router.

If you want to keep the old Express, so about all you can do is reset to default values and then put in place again to see if that would help the Express perform a little longer.

If you run an operating system recent on your MacBook Pro, like Lion, Lion mountain, Mavericks, Yosemite, etc., it is possible that AirPort on your Mac utility is even more supports the version of the Express you may have. To see if this could be a problem...

Check to locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express Terminal. It is difficult to see, so you need to perhaps good lighting and reading glasses. The model number starts with an 'A' follow-up of four digits.  Post back with that info

To check what operating system you use on your Mac...

Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click on about this Mac and post back with the Version of OS X number that you see there.

  • Hello! My AirPort Express (802.11a/b/g) lights no more. I think he lost his power. What should I do to restore its power?

Hello! My AirPort Express (802.11a/b/g) lights no more. I think he lost his power. What should I do to restore its power?

If AirPort Express light does not illuminate, this indicates that the internal power supply inside the Express did not, and the device will need to be replaced.

If you really a 802.11a/b/g in the Express version, it is at least 8 years old and probably much older than that.  Average life of this product was about 3-4 years, then you have had surprisingly good luck with your product.

  • Airport Express has stopped working after a reboot?

My internet is slow so I disconnected all my gear to restart, and subsequently, my Airport Express flashes orange and doesn't seem to work. It is used as an Extender for internet and wireless printing. The Internet access does not work in the room in which it is located, and the WiFi is low, around this room. Internet working in other parts of the House near my Airport extreme AC.  I opened Airport utility and the only thing that appears is the Internet connected to the AirPort Extreme this. The Airport Express is not displayed. What can I do to fix this?

    Thanks in advance!

    • Soft reset: perform this reset if you forget your password.  Soft reset resets your password and disables security settings (settings of access control and RADIUS are temporarily interrupted). Forget the password would normally prevent connection or device configuration. If you make no changes within five minutes to do a soft reset, the unit will return to its former State. All the parameters of the device will be available once it has rebooted.
    1. Connect the device to the power supply and wait for it to complete its startup process.
    2. Press in and hold the reset button with a pen, a pencil or paper clip straightened for 1 full second, then release it. The lamp (LED) starts amber flashes, indicating that the unit is in soft reset mode.
    3. In the airport menu bar item, choose the network created by the device (the network name does not change).
    4. Open utility AirPort from Applications > utilities.
    5. Select the base station, and then click on edit (editing window indicates that the base station is in Soft Reset mode).
    6. Move tabs to make changes to your passwords or other settings as needed, then click on update and continue, as requires it
    7. Quit AirPort Utility.

  • How to put in place the new Airport Express to extend the current wireless WiFi U-Verse home network?

    Hello

What are the steps for the creation of a new AIRPORT EXPRESS MC414LL/A Terminal so that it make that expand my network existing wireless, using my current AT & T UVerse equipment home.  Here are the details...

    Internet service provider: AT & T U-Verse

Existing facilities: primary AT & T provided router/Modem: ARRIS NVG589 (reference 587234-004-00) that manages my house wired and wireless Wi - Fi.

PROBLEM: Does not offer full Wi - Fi coverage

SOLUTION: Attempt to add a new Terminal Airport Express so that it will extend coverage of the existing Wi - Fi network wireless.  I plan on the use of certain features such as streaming my content from iTunes to my sound, surround sound, etc Airport Express Library.

NEW FEATURE: APPLE AIRPORT EXPRESS 802.11n Wi - Fi PART # MC414LL/A

I wish I had AT & T equipment to continue to manage the Wi - Fi and network functionality (DNS, firewall, etc.), as it currently does.  However, I want to use the Airport Express to extend Wi - Fi coverage.  I already have a cable ethernet from the floor and the AT & T ARRIS NVG589.  I just need to know how to set up my new Apple Airport Express.

    Thank you!

With the Express connected to Arris gateway with Ethernet, you have the basis for a roaming network.

I would recommend that you run the AirPort Utility and allow it to run automatic installation of the Express. The utility should detect that the Express is connected by Ethernet and go through the steps to properly set up. Note: If you have made any changes to the Express since out of the box, I strongly suggest that you first perform a 'factory' reset on it to make sure that the installation went well.
