Should I unplug external drives during the upgrade?
Contemplating upgrading to El Capitan. I have an iMac end of 2014, so I know that it is correct. My question is - should I disconnect all external drives and devices before you run the upgrade, or it doesn't matter?
I remember too, when I updated before, the new operating system does recognize the Time Machine backups. Should I do to be able to access the TM of the previous operating system?
Thank you
Barbara
It can't hurt to unplug external drives.
Time Machine should recognize the previous backups. Which means, you should be able to go back to the backups made since previous versions of OS X. I know when I upgraded from 10.10.5 to 10.11.3, I could see/restore back ups in 10.10.5.
Another thing to consider is once the Installer OS X El Capitan.app file is downloaded and before you click continue to install, copy this file from / applications to another folder (for example, downloads) so that you have it if you need it in the future. Download time records.

XP Pro - unable to detect the hard drive during the upgrade
Hello
I was trying to add a second IDE hard drive to my PC, after the installation of the system tells me not hard are detected. Press FI to try again. F2 to set up. I did both, but the drive still not detected and the system could not start.
I try to install back my original drive (a drive), but the problem persists.
Can I know how to fix this?
It can because of the IDE Hard Drive cable?
Thank you
Low
It is not at all what you did (for example, why do you of the re - install your original disc). However, if what you were doing was to connect the new drive to the middle connector on the cable and then disconnect it, maybe all what you did was disconnect the cable at the end of the motherboard.
Yes, your problem may be a faulty IDE cable... but that seems unlikely given that it worked before... unless you damaged the cable while you were trying to connect the second drive.
Look carefully at the end of the motherboard of the cable and make sure it is properly connected, do not offset by a PIN or two and - if you had unplugged, that you do not bend the pins when you reconnect it.

Hello
I use sony vaio VGN-FW290 JTH. I tried to upgrade to Windows 7 and has been invited to uninstall iTunes, Vaio Care, ATI Catalyst Install Manager, ATI Catalyst Control Center, Google Toolbar. I uninstalled it, rebooted the PC and then tried to run Windows 7 installation DVD. Then, I realized that my CD/DVD/BD does not, marked with! in the Device Manager. I tried the procedure in this forum to the http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistahardware/thread/957a26d4-4219-4b76-8e89-2e74e6ee2a0e/. I ran SFC tool - it pointed out some problems he couldn't fix it. I tried to update to the latest drivers for the drive, but Windows says that the latest drivers are installed. The properties for the device say: Windows cannot load the driver for this hardware device. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39):
I hope someone from Microsoft or Sony can help - I think that it is catch 22 during the upgrade to Windows 7.

TomgoldHi tomgold,
Welcome to Microsoft Answers Forums.
This can also occur if an incorrect device driver has been installed for the DVD-ROM device.
I suggest that you visit the DVD drive manufacturer site download the latest drivers for the drive and install on the computer and if it works. Make sure you download the Windows vista 64-bit driver.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME during the upgrade to Windows 7 from Windows Vista
I'm getting an unmountable_boot_volume during the upgrade to Windows 7 from Windows Vista. It occurs after Windows 7 software loads and restarts. If I restart the computer, I have the option to start the upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows Vista. If I select Windows Vista, the computer restarts without problem. If I choose Windows 7 Upgrade, I get the blue screen of death with the unmountable_boot_volume error. Of course, nothing wrong with the boot volume because Windows Vista starts without error. The boot drive is 1.5 TB. Any suggestions on how to accomplish the upgrade to Windows 7?

Original title: OEM Windows XP Home SP3 update XP Pro
Here is a compilation of the messages from another forum regarding
My problem:
---------------------------------------------------------------I'm trying to upgrade a Windows XP Home Sp3 OEM system to
Windows XP Pro. (There are a few Pro features
that are not available in the House I now need: (1) the files offline and
(2) an add-on available for free to Onenote 2007, Top2onenote, requires a Pro).
I don't want a clean install, but an upgrade. I bought a Windows XP Pro
Upgrade CD on Ebay that was Windows XP Pro
Gold (v2002). I'm sure that's true for the following reasons:It has been listed as an upgrade, but the CD is not labeled "Upgrade".
It seems very authentic with all Microsoft holography.
He came in the standard package of Windows XP (without box),
and it was sealed.
The name of volume for the CD is WXPFPP_EN. The Internet,.
It is the retail of Windows XP Pro RTM (gold)! Here are things I tried initially.
(1) I tried to upgrade to Pro from the purchased CD. It is immediately
has refused to upgrade indicating the upgrade OS (Pro) is older than the
installed OS (home)...(2) I read about "slipstreaming". "Slipstreaming" allows to integrate
a service pack with an earlier version of the operating system. I created a
upgrade XP Pro SP3 with Nlite slipstreamed CD image (and
Autostreamer later, but it made no difference) from the purchased CD
and a file containing SP3.After you burn the CD and start the upgrade
(Windows installation), the upgrade process
product through "information collection."
"Dynamic update" and "Preparation of Installation" with
no problems. My computer restarted and returned to
"Installation preparation". A progress bar called 'Progress '.
quickly filled to about 90% and the hanging system
at that time there for about 15 minutes.
Then, I got the following error message:Setup cannot set the required Windows XP configuration
information. This indicates an internal Setup error. This is where I am stuck. I had to leave the installation at this point.
My drive is starts raining and I had to restore a backup.(3) just for the heck of it, I formatted my hard drive and
reinstalled my original OEM XP Home SP3 OS (no clean up, no user file).
I immediately used my XP CD slipstreamed Pro to try one
upgrade to XP Pro and IT WORKED! I need to find out why the
properly clean XP Home OS upgraded to XP Pro but my pre-existing
(with the files users, drivers, etc..) XP Home OS does not level
successfully to XP Pro.
-------------------------------------------------------------Another post:
Yet once, today, I installed a new copy of OEM Windows XP Home Sp3.
I continue with installation of all the essential and the add-on
pilots (essentially all my original version). Then, I
set up a network connection and firewall. With this configuration,.
I ran the Pro XP slipstreamed SP3 CD. The upgrade to XP Pro
success (even if the upgrade not configured my graphics
card properly). I guess my current problem is either the registry,
the WINDOWS, some user file or parameter file.
---------------------------------------------------------------Another post:
I made a file and the backup of the folder C:\Windows folder
on my system that is pre-existing (OEM XP Home Sp3). I also did a
separate the backup the State of the 'system' on my pre-existing system.
These are added my full image backup of her pre-existing
system a month ago.I did a backup image of my system (minimum fees OEM XP Home
SP3 with all the original installed drivers over a network configured
connection and a firewall configured). This system will upgrade
XP Pro with XP Pro SP3 slipstreamed CD successfully.Experiment 1:
I've restored my minimum system. I then restored the C:/Windows folder
and the State of the pre-existing system backup system. A startup
has managed (with a minor irritant). I had to activate Windows.
Then, I tried upgrading the slipstreamed XP Pro processor. He stopped
at the same place during the upgrade and gave the same error as before:Setup cannot set the required configuration information Windows XP.
This indicates an internal Setup error.Experiment 2:
I've restored my minimum system. I then restored the system state only
the backup of the pre-existing system. After startup I was asked to
activate Windows, but answer Yes to the question would be to disconnect me
the system. I couldn't get connected to try the XP Pro upgrade.Experience 3:
I've restored my minimum system. I then restored only the C:/Windows
the backup of the pre-existing system folder. Once again, as in experiment 1,
the upgrade failed at the same place with the same error message.----------------------------------------------------------------
Before the experiment 3, I hoped that 3 experience would succeed so I
could conclude that I had a registry problem. I'm not sure now.
I don't know what to try next. Take the minimum system and reinstalling
my files of the user is not an option that my hard drive has over 200 GB of
programs! If I restore all files and folders of my pre-existing
I would still have backup to restore a system state the reliable (read the registry).
---------------------------------------------------------------------Sorry for the length! If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate your responses.
Thank you

Is there a way to recover the EFS encrypted files stored on an external drive without the original of the certificate?
I had photos/files stored on an external drive and have been encrypted with EFS in XP. The main drive crashed, all keys have been lost. Got a new main drive, installed the new OS and now can't access encrypted files.
Unless you can retrieve parts of your old drive or have a backup of your encryption certificate, you have probably lost all of your encrypted data. Recovery agents work only if they are in place when the file/folder is initially encrypted. A program like AEFSDR might be able to resurrect your old certificate from your old drive if it is readable at all. If you plan to use EFS in the future, make sure you read the following article the court - particularly paragraph entitled "why you should back up your certificates.
"Best practices for EFS file system.

Protection of the projects during the upgrade of the Lion in Yosemite
Hello world! Does anyone know how to protect themselves from projects during the upgrade of the Lion to the operating system of Yosemite? I heard shops of the horror of people the upgrade of an operating system to another and then having to rebuild their projects in the new operating system and I want to avoid if I can. If there is no way to do so, any ideas on the record of ongoing projects would be greatly appreciated. I have been turned off of this update forever and you have to do as soon as POSSIBLE. I'm currently under OS X 10.9.5 and FCPX 10.1.4. Thank you!
10.9.5 are Mavericks. Could indicate you these horror stories? They may contain information that is largely obsolete. You want to check any third-party software and plugins to make sure they are compatible with the latest operating system.
