  I had problems with my card SmartMedia too when I first bought it. in the manual mode for the Satellite 3000 (top 5-22 to be exact) says that you can insert the media with the connector card to the top. IT IS WRONG! YOU insert so that the connector (the metallic area) must face downwards.

  The Photosmart 245 printer shows to support 5 different card types in the page of the specifications of the printer.

  • I and II, CF card Secure Digital / MM, SmartMedia card/xD-Picture card, Sony Memory Stick

  Due to the age of this printer, I'd bet that it does not support the SDHC standard.  In addition, this printer is released in a time that 16 GB cards were not standard or common.  This could also be a factor in ability of the printer to read the card.

  Found some info on the supported cards.
  The Bridge Media location takes in charge the rest of cards:

  8MB SD - 2GB / microSD(with_adapter):512 MB - 2 GB
  SD - HC 4 GB - 16GB / microSDHC(with_adapter):4 GB
  miniSD (with adapter): 32 MB - 2 GB / microSD (with adapter): 512 MB - 2 GB

  The Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, xD Card, CompactFlash, SmartMedia and others * are NOT * supported.
  You can buy an external USB card reader to be able to use other cards

  Card reader is properly recognized in Device Manager?
  If it is not recognized, then you used a bad driver.

  If its recognized, the driver has been installed correctly and there is another reason why SD cards cannot be used.

  As far as I know the Satellite Pro L770 card reader manages different types of cards with different sizes.
  SD: 8 MB - 2 GB
  SDHC: 4GB - 32 GB
  SDXC: 64 GB
  Memory stick: 128MB - 256 MB
  Memory Stick Pro: 512 MB - 2 GB
  xD Card: No.
  Mini SD: 8MB - 2 GB
  Micro SD: 8MB - 2 GB
  CompactFlash: No.
  SmartMedia: No.

  As you can see the compatible SD card: 8 MB 2 GB
  It seems more large SD cards only are NOT supported.

  But, normally, for the smaller cards, you will need an adapter that is often included, as for the memory stick pro duo.
  I think it's just normal size and you have to put in the middle of the card reader slot until you hear a click.
