  Okay, so I recently had a new Inspiron 660 and everything was going so well... until I went on YouTube. Nothing appears when I plug in the headphones and the 'Sound' section there's no help whatsoever. I tried several different sets of headphones and headsets.   I understood the problem for me in any case, that maybe it's not the problem for you. In any case, on the back of my monitor is a headphone jack and it turns, the office tries to use it as a default output for the sound. So, here's where I put my headphones for a sound to come out.   When I set up my phone to use my TV as a second monitor via HDMI, I had to install an HDMI audio driver before I could use the TV speakers system. You did not mention the brand / the model of the laptop, but I imagine it would be a similar problem in my DELL Studio 17.
