  According to me, that there is still something wrong with the hard drive after release. You can enter the Bios (f2 at startup) to check if the hard drive recognized. You can see on the main page or startup option.

  You can not install Windows 7 on an external drive. Windows 7 requires that install you it on an attached storage device internally.   I have a Dimension 9200 with 4 GB of RAM and two Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250 GB hard drives that works well for 8 or 9 years.

  Have you tried to enter the bios Setup, and then press alt + F? Save/quit it can detect readers.

  I have a question.
  I have a Toshiba Satellite A300, which came with Windows Vista.
