  • The upgrade to ESXi 4.1 with storage iSCSI software to ESXi 5.5

I intend to upgrade ESXi 4.1 with which I have attached to ESXi 5.5 iSCSI software storage

I've updated all my guests who were on the SAN storage with no problems.

I would like to know that if it there's nothing I should take care before I update the host connected iSCSI to ESXi 5.5, as for the hosts with SAN attached storage I made to remove the cables of SAN before upgrading the host.

Also, if all known problems, you will be informed during the upgrade to ESXi 4.1 to ESXi 5.5 with iSCSI Software storage, please let me know?

If there is no different process to upgrade coz in ESXi 4.1 I do not see this link ports of iSCSI vmkernel ports software iSCSI but I know in ESXi5.5 we have to or I just launch a procedure of standard upgrade via the Update Manager and everything will be taken care?

    Thanks in advance

With ESXi prior to version 5, linking ports had to be done via command line. However, if it has been configured correctly, you should be able to upgrade to ESXi 5.5 (assuming that the host has not been previously updated since version 3). BTW. the last time that I disconnected the host of storage for an upgrade has been with ESX 3.0.

  • Disk partedUtil utility command-line on ESXi disk partitioning

    Hi all

I created the partition by using the utiliy of command-line partedUtil on ESXI in the face of error below:

    • error: "Invalid guid (0xfb). Contains non hexadecimal numbers
    • Is not a valid guid (fb). Length should be 32
    • Is not a valid guid (251). Length should be 32

Can you advise me how to solve the problem of the partition.

    Hi Prashant.

VMFS data warehouses can be created and deleted using the vSphere client connected to an ESXi/ESX host or vCenter Server. It is not necessary to manually create partitions by using the command line utility. For more information, see the Configuration Guide for your version of ESXi/ESX storage management.

    Resolution

You can use the partedUtil command line utility to directly manipulate local and remote tables of partitions on the disks of SAN on ESX and ESXi.

The partedUtil command-line is only supported for ESXi 5.x disk partitioning. The command-line utility fdisk does not work with LUN formatted with VMFS5.

Note: This article is from the principle that a console session is available to the host ESX or ESXi, you're familiar with console management concepts and the disk, and you did backups appropriate before proceeding. For more information, see:

Unable to connect to a host ESX using Secure Shell (SSH) (1003807) or

Using the Mode of Support Tech in ESXi 4.1 and 5.x ESXi (1017910).

If you are not sure of any step, contact the VMware Support.

For more information on the re-creation of a missing VMFS partition table using PartedUtil see: re-creating a VMFS datastore partition missing in vSphere 5 (2046610)

  • the upgrade to esxi 4.1 to 5.1 and moving hosts to 5.1 VC

We always have a lot of guests esxi 4.1 running in VC 4.1

the plan is to move these hosts to 5.1 (already built) VC and upgrade hosts with her

    That I should

    a. take a host in vc 4.1, in maintenance mode,

    b. update, patch. etc...

out of the maintenance of the c mode.

    d. move vms back on

host e is disconnected. the cluster

    f. remove a host cluster and vc4.1

    g. connect host to new cluster in vc5.1

    thoughts?

You have a perfect plan. But you need to make changes in the order steps

    The correct order would be:

    disconnect the cluster host

remove the cluster host and vc4.1

connect the host to the new cluster in vc5.1

Take the host in vc 5.1, in maintenance mode,

    Update, patch. etc...

    exit maintenance mode

    move virtual machines on it

You can manage guests 4.1 to 5.1 VC. If all the guests move there first and then upgrade one at a time

How to upgrade the esxi 5.0 and 5.5 only give me the step by step process.

There are several methods supported for direct upgrade to 5.5 ESXi are:

    • vSphere Update Manager.
    • Interactive update of the CD, DVD or USB drive.
    • Scripted upgrade
    • esxcli
    • Automatic deployment

You can find each method in this KB: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2058352

  • Is there a limit on the number of times you can upgrade an ESXi host?

We have VMware hosts that have been updated to ESXi 4.1 5.1 using the Update Manager.  Wouldn't we be ok to update these servers ESXi 5.5 or 6.0 without having to do a fresh install and reformat?

    Thank you

I don't know if there is a limit to how many times where you can upgrade, but the upgrade to ESXi 4.1 to 5.1 and 5.5 is supported and works (I just tested it in my lab).

  • host ESXi 4.1 to 5.5 upgrade

    Hi all, hope this helps.

I installed a new 5.5 vcenter and always running a vcenter 4.1, running both at the same time, I have migrated a crowd of 4.1 through to my platform of 5.5 and want to update the host to 5.5 (I have a license), my question is, will this affect my other storage on the san, other hosts on 4.1 run here , and I do not wish to upgrade this one 5.5 if it will affect the other storage on the old vcenter (things always work) he seem quite simple to do, but not sure about that something and can not afford to make the mistake with the old esx environment...

You can upgrade the host ESXi 4.1 managed by vCenter 5.5 without problems. For more safety, unplug the host HBA when you perform the upgrade if you use CF. If I understand correctly, both the upgrade to 5.5 ESXi and ESXi 4.1 hosts existing use same data warehouses. The only drawback I see is after the upgrade to 5.5 ESXi host, do not improve data warehouses of VMFS3 to VMFS5 so as not to affect the environment 4.1 existing.

I upgraded to ESXi 5.0 to 5.5 ESxi now when I ping the esx host, it fails.

I was able to ping before the update. Test management system also fails to ping the default gateway.

I sent a private message you, could answer you on this one here? Got iso's, he's now testing in my lab, but I don't have that kind of network cards, you will need to do the real test for me.

  • The upgrade to vCenter Server 5 with a view Server 4.6 on a host ESXi 4.1

We have guests ESX and ESXi 4.1 and just got a new host ESXi 5. We must now be upgraded vCetner to version 5 server in order to manage the new host. I know 5 4.1 manage vCenter hosts but do I need to be wary when it comes to the host that maintains the virtual computers view or the view Server 4.6 VM itself?

According to the comapbility matrix View 4.6 is not supported under vSphere or vCenter 5.

  • How to upgrade an ESXi host from the command line

Sorry for bumping an old thread. I'm new to ESXi. I'm under ESXi 5.5 build 1331820 and I am at a loss how to apply patches.

Preferably, I would like to apply all the relevant patches through console (SSH). Can someone give me pointers how to do this? Thank you

Moderator note (a.p.): branched to a new discussion of software patch to version 1331820?

    Welcome to the community,

on how to patch a ESXi host from the command line, please see for example http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2008939

Basically download you the latest hotfix package and install it using the command esxcli . That said, please make sure that your hardware is supported by the patch that you want to apply (see http://www.vmware.com/go/hcl). You can also do before installing the patch, is to do a "dry - run" to know what . VIBS are removed and which are installed by the patch. To do this add -dry - run to the esxcli command line.

In the case where something goes wrong, you can revert to the previous state by pressing SHIFT-R , while the ESXi hosts begins the start-up.

  • Upgrade to ESXi free edition to the essential

I bought VmWare Essentials.  I have 3 guests that I need to upgrade.  2 guests have ESXi 4.0 and 1 host ESXi 4.1.  I downloaded and installed the Vcenter server on a Windows 2003 64-bit, Server server and do not know what steps I have to take for my host machines.  I host machines begin from an internal USB drive and then all the VMS sit on a RAID5 with 2 data warehouses.  I want to assure you that I will not lose one of my virtual machines.  My question is just to install the new key license or do I have to download 4.1 and reinstall the USB?  Any help would be greatly appreciated so that I am using what I bought.

The addition of the license key is all that is necessary. You will lose all data.

  • ESXi 4.0 command line upgrade to ESXi 4.0 U1

I know there is a method in ESX using "esxupdate", but is there a simple process similar to ESXi commandline? Can someone post a step by step method and let me know which download install? I downloaded this...

Upgrade the ESXi Server 4.0 package to ESXi Server 4.0 Update 1

This package provides experienced users with the possibility to upgrade remotely, without head of ESXi Server 4.0 to ESXi Server 4.0 Update 1. Use this package with the Remote Command Line Interface 'vihostupdate '.

Or is it not available for ESXi?

Probably because you do not pass in the right syntax params and by default, it will use localhost. All orders of vCLI has always the default value - server, username - and - password (or you can let the password off and you will be asked)

    Try this:

    vihostupdate.pl --server 10.4.75.230 -user user -i -b C:\ESXi-4.0.0-update01.zip

and assuming that the IP is your ESXi host, you will be asked your password

Note: Also, if you use the vCLI to automate all the tasks, to ensure that you are on an eval edition or duly authorized of ESXi, as you can't use the vCLI with the free version of ESXi else, you will get an error.

  • Upgrade to esxi 6 - running in parallel 5.5 versions Enterprise

    Hello together,

We want to improve our Enterprise 5.5 to 6.0 Enterprise environment more.

Can we run in parallel business with Enterprise 6.0 5.5 more ESXi hosts.

    or

We can add the license keys for the company more than 5.5 to existing hosts without any configuration problem, then

upgrade the esxi hosts to 6.0?

    Thank you

There is no problem, but I recommend to keep this scenario only during migration.
