Storage vMotion + vmdk files in different folders

Hello

Storage vMotion will spend the vmdk files [in 2 different folders on the same data store for the moment] in the same folder while that migrated to the different data store?

Why the vmdk files are in 2 different folders:

Windows 2008r2 was misconfigured evil so anything by rebooting, it went to the system recovery. Was not able to recover the system.

The system was rebuilt, and 2 D: and E: drives were attached ["use an existing virtual disk"] as of the existing vmdk disks to the new virtual machine.

So drive C: [rebuilt VM] vmdk file is located in files vmdk D: & E new-vm-folder & readers are old-vm-folder.

So "storage vMotion will pass the vmdk files [in 2 different folders on the same data store for the moment] in the same folder while that migrated to the different data store? I know that storage vMotion and change of name of the files/folders works well.

If this is not the case, what would be the best practice to get is sorted?

Thank you very much

Pawel

Welcome to the community - Yes it will be. The other option would be to turn off the cold and virtual machine migrate the virtual machine to the correct data store.

  • IX4 - 300 d / General SIN: How can I move large files between different folders?

    Hi @all.

    My new IX4 - 300 d arrived yesterday

After doing his RAID-things all night, now I want to move my files from my old NAS to this one.

    I do this using Copy-supported by the ix4 - 300 d, which work fine.

A big problem for me: I want to reorganize some large files / directories (> 200 GB), so I have to cut and paste the files from one folder to another (all on the ix4 - 300 d, but with different user groups).

When I move files between subfolders in a folder of the sin, it works fast enough - I think here that the transfer will be treated directly by the nas server.

When I do the same thing between subfolders in different folders (which appear as various network drives in windows Explorer), it seems that the transfer is managed by my pc or laptop - and it is very slow...

I tried to move the files on my network environment (all folders are subfolders of a server: ix4 - 300 d) because I thought the problem was in my network mapping, but it does not work faster.

How will I know my ix4 - 300 d to move the files directly (without the "help" from my pc)?

Another idea for me was to do it via ftp, but my ix4 - 300 d only refused my connection (have to try a little more)

    Please help me

I "solved" the problem by creating a copy of the temporary employment with the manual removal of duplicates once the task is completed. The copy job run all night.

For future problems, I must think of an another "file management".

    Thanks for your response!

  • I am not allowed to move files in different folders. He tells me that I don't have permission. It started a few days ago.

I create a project and save it to my standard file.  From there on, I move files in individual folders.  Recently, files are not allowed to be moved and my main files have a lock that appears on the icon.  I removed the shared lock, but still not able to move files.  I have windows 7.

You can use it on personal folders,

    http://www.Vistax64.com/tutorials/112795-context-menu-take-ownership.html

Ownership of a file or a folder,

Right click on the file/folder, select properties and then click the Security tab.

Click Advanced, and then click the owner tab.

Click on edit and then do one of the following:

To change the owner to a user or group that is not listed, click other users and groups and enter the object name to select (examples), type the name of the user or group and then click OK.

  • storage vmotion 4 1 TB vmdk to a new data store 4TB on 5.5

    All,

Benefit in performance if the 4 storage vmotion VMDK located on 4 separate data warehouses in a newly created 4TB data store. with 5.5 capacity 62, I was hoping that someone could tell me.

    I appreciate it

Well well, the response - as before - is "it depends...". ».

If you want to use a large drive or multiple small disks depends on the structure of data. If you can not divide the data into departments for example, projects, home/profile,... you can be better with a single large disk. Don't forget to use a GPT partition table, and you need to check if for example your backup software can handle that. Some image/VM based backup applications can backup and restore virtual drives very well, but do not have the ability to file level restore! Also don't forget that - disaster - restoration such a large virtual disk will take a significant amount of time during which data is not available for users. If the data structure allows to distribute to several virtual disks (you can always use DFS to present the data through a single share), I prefer this over the large virtual disk. With the smallest disks virtual, you will certainly have to watch each of them for free disk space, but you can increase the size of disk individually and restoration of a single virtual disk can be done much more quickly (with other discs still online / available to users).

  • Storage vmotion a VM with so many vmdk and RDM for NFS

I try a virtual machine that has so much Storage VMotion vmdk and RDM disks to a NFS data store.

I do NOT need convert the RDM disks just move the pointer with the VMDK file will be converted.

    Is this possible?

Now if I try this hot svmotion, I get an error on the RDM which set out the following "virtual disk" drive hard 3' is a direct access mapped LUN that is not supported on the data store 'myEMCNFSds'.»»

If I try this svmotion cold then I get no warning, but it seems that svmotion is trying to convert the RDM NFS drive.

Is your RDM in physical compatibility mode?   Check out this article KB http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1001856

  • How to create a Contact with Adobe Photoshop CS5 plank on a disc with images in different folders

I had a disc with image files (mainly files have and psd) in different folders and subfolders, how can I create a Board contact, including all image files in different folders. (It seems to me that Adobe Bridge can only create a contact by clicking on the image directly files sheet, but not a record, including image files)

    THX!

Use the Contact Sheet II optional plugin located in downloads from Adobe:

    (1) search for a contact in PS CS5 help sheet

    (2) select the first result and read carefully all the optional package of the Photoshop plug-ins photo

    (3) follow the instructions to download the zip file and note the location where you download it.

    (4) follow the instructions to install the files.

I don't know how PS CS5 will deal with vector image files have or if you need to batch convert images raster first before using the Contact Sheet II.  Contact sheet II allows you to choose a folder and include all subfolders option, so you could create a folder of the plug Contact and copy all of your files in this folder that will become the subfolders of the main folder that you choose for your contact sheet.

  • flying over the vmdk files after storage vmotion

    People,

I finished a few vmotions storage and I see that there are some vmdk files left belonging to a virtual machine by flying over in the source data store.

Storage vmotion however was very good. Time last modified files are several months old.

If the vmdk files are old players was dismantled some time back?

There are also a few - zdump.000 left side files in source data warehouses. should you be worried about those?

    Rahul-

Although I suppose the files are orphans, I always double-check for use before deleting. Virtual disk file (hard) can be changed only in case Active snapshots exist for them. What you can do is run RVTools, to see if these files appear as 'Zombies' and if so, I would say you first create a subdirectory and move the "orphans" files above and - if everything continues to work as expected - delete at a later date. Alternatively you can check the vmware.log of the virtual machine file to see if the files appear here.

Zdump files are created if something unexpected occurs. However, it is difficult to say what the brought to be created and if they are old and have any problems, you can delete just them.

  • Same version of files of Windows basic in different folders

In a first time - it's not a question about deleting double files! That said, I would like to know why several 'identical' basic Windows files are in different folders, if it is the default, or if I should suspect malware activity. I am not a Curmudgeon, but I watch and try to understand the risks in order to keep my computer as clean as possible. Normally paranoid, so to say. Yes, I have searched the Net to find answers, but because each searchresult starts with registration of tons of methods how to Remove double, which isn't what I'm shooting, I won't and hope to have some answers here.

Some of the files that appear twice are:

Iexplore.exe Explorer.exe, rundll32.exe, cmd.exe, msiexec.exe. Also of Ping, Taskkilll, VMI Provider Host, WinMail, Windows Media Player and more. They seem to all reside in either 'C:\Windows\System32\' or 'C:\Winndows\SysWOW64\ '.

My instinct says files are legitimate and there for a reason (Win32 Win64 vs?), but if so - why different pairs of size have the same version numbers? And why some of the pairs do not differ from just one byte (!) in size? Also - why Internet Explorer keep running 'normally', even if I killed the process (iexplore.exe) in the firewall and why do I sometimes get an error of "Explorer finished unexpectedly" Internet to the time when I close the browser? (Freely translated from Swedish)

    System information:

DELL Precision T5500 w. Intel Xeon 5650 CPU, 12 GB of RAM and Swedish Win7 Pro/64 from an SSD. Version of Internet Explorer is 11. Lots of available storage place on quite 3 hard disks. There is also a domestic network with 3 computers, an iPad, and two printers. Several commercial versions of security software installed reside (MalwareBytes, HitmanPro, ZoneAlarm AV + FW), as well as occasional safe mode analyses, or online, with free stuff (SuperAntiSpyware, HouseCall, TDSSKiller, CCleaner, etc.). No unusual activity not found yet, the system is apparently clean.

Are the files of normal behavior part?

    Please notify. Thank you!

On most systems, the folder that 'account' is the folder C:\Windows\System32 (assuming that Windows is installed on your C drive).  On a 64-bit system, those will be 64-bit on those files.

In the 64-bit installations there will also be a SysWOW64 folder (not present on 32-bit systems) that will look much like the system32 folder.

The SysWOW64 folder (Windows on Windows) is where Windows keeps 32 bit copy of an application that may be required from time to time on your 64 bit system.

The files in System32 and SysWOW64 may be the same, they may be a little different, they may be very different but Windows will use the appropriate files when it should.

If this sounds like a behavior very normal and expected.

Don't know what 'why Internet Explorer continue to function 'normally', even if I killed the process (iexplore.exe) in the firewall' means (how can you kill IE in the firewall?).  Why do you have to kill the process of IE in the first place?

Windows comes with a built-in so firewall if you have installed ZoneAlarm and use its firewall, this facility should have been smart enough to disable the built in Windows Firewall.

It is not a good idea to run two firewalls at the same time, so if you are using ZA firewall you might want to pursue firewall issues and problems in the ZA community where experts hang out:

  • VSphere Storage VMotion - why I can't select specific .vmdks?

Back in ESX 3.5, I used the Storage VMotion GUI to easily switch the virtual disks to store data in the data store.   Now that we are using VSphere, of course he has this built-in feature.  But I don't see a way to move from the individual .vmdks of a VM monkey - it only allows me to move ALL of them at once.

If I have a VM with, say, 5 virtual disks - how can I move one of them to a different data store using the VIC?   I don't see a way with the Migration Wizard.

    Sven

When you get to where you were in the screenshot 2, you must click on the "[location]" text next to the volume that you want to migrate.  This will display a drop-down list of your data warehouse, allowing that you select a destination for this volume.  You can do this to each vmdk, selecting targets of different data store for each group that you want to move.

  • vMotion (without shared storage) between two hosts with different vSwitches standard s VM

I can VM vMotion (without shared storage) between two hosts with different vSwitches standard? The vSwitches on these two hosts have different names and number of NIC, but have the same name of portgroup.

    Thank you.

Yes, you can in a Storage VMotion to one Esxi to another with no shared storage...

It is important the portgroup bears the same name... This is the reference for the VM...

  • Storage test 55 certification vmotion, storage vmotion fails with "Could not lock file" on the virtual machine during storage vmotion

In my view, that it is a known problem in ESXi 5.5 Update 2 release notes, someone knows a solution yet? This is an excerpt from the release notes:

    • Attempts to perform live storage vMotion of virtual machines with RDM disks can fail
Storage vMotion of virtual machines with RDM disks can fail and virtual machines can be considered in turned off of the State. Attempts to turn on the virtual machine fails with the following error:

      Cannot lock the file

      Workaround: No.

VMware support for the record said that the patch will update 3, it is known as an intermittent problem. Finally, it happened to me on the 9th attempt.

  • ESXi 5.5 - move datastore only different verses of the primary VMDK file?

ESXi 5.5 installed on Dell R720(2 mirrored hard drives which is Data Store1) and connected to the Dell 3220 storage cabinet that is listed as a 3220 in data stores. I recently converted a Server 2003 physical to virtual (2003Server). I noticed that the VM 2003Server folder has been created the data store Dell3220 and contained everything except the vmdk file located in a folder called 2003server in DataStore1. There's a cliché that was created during the conversion process. This snapshot should be able to be removed. What is the right way to move the vmdk file to the folder in vm on the data store 3220 2003Server? Here's what I think the correct way to do it, but I want to make sure that it is a production server

    1. turn off the virtual machine

    2. remove/delete all snapshots

    3. copy or move the file to the Datastore1 to the data store 3220 2003server.vmdk

    4. change the settings and add another hard drive... pointing to the file OK datastore/folder/2003server.vmdk

    5. click on ok

6 change settings and delete it from your hard drive 1 and choose the option to remove the virtual machine.

    7. click on OK

8 turn on the virtual machine

    9 fact

As you only ESXi host (no vCenter):

The steps you plan to sense.

    I'm assuming that:

-You have a virtual machine with 2 VMDK: a VMDK on DS1 & an another VM on DS2. Now you want all files of the virtual machine (the two VMDK and vmx etc.)

    1. turn off the power the virtual computer.

    2 remove snapshots

    3. go to the data store where to move VMDK is there.

4 right-click the VMDK & click MOVE (copy may not work in VI client data warehouses)

    5. Select the another data store where you want to keep this VMDK. Wait the VMDK is migrated.

6 change seetings > click VMDK that was moved (it will have previous VMDK PATH, so now VM can not turn on) > delete this VMDK

    7. yet once change settings > click Add > hard disk > select existing virtual disk > select the VMDK which moved earlier. > OK

    8. now you should be able to power on the virtual machine.

Note: This should work with primary VMDK as well.

Let me know if you have any questions

  • Storage vmotion, between data warehouses when the block size is different

    Hi all

I would like to know, is it possible to do a vmotion of storage between two data warehouses, when they have different block sizes. The case is as a former vmfs data store 3 which has been upgraded direct to vmfs5 there, but since it has been updated it maintains its own block size. While the newly created vmfs datastore 5 a block size of 1 MB.

Thus, storage Vmotion will work in this case? It will fail OR will be with degraded performance?

Finally, storage vmotion is possible even if you do not have a cluster DRS for storage?

    Thank you

    Yes you can!
