    Hey Janeynflorida

    1st thing to try is a restoration of the system in safe mode

    http://www.windowsvistauserguide.com/system_restore.htm

    Windows Vista

    Using the F8 method:

    1. Restart your computer.
    2. When the computer starts, you will see your computer hardware are listed. When you see this information begins to tap theF8 key repeatedly until you are presented with theBoot Options Advanced Windows Vista.
    3. Select the Safe Mode option with the arrow keys.
    4. Then press enter on your keyboard to start mode without failure of Vista.
    5. To start Windows, you'll be a typical logon screen. Connect to your computer and Vista goes into safe mode.
    6. Do whatever tasks you need and when you are done, reboot to return to normal mode.

    So, here's my problem:

    I formatted my computer yesterday.
    It is about 2/3 years since I formatted last.
    I've never had any problems before with formatting my computer.
    It is a 5 year old computer, but still works.
    These are the things I've done before update:
    Install avast!
    install chrome
    install vlc. (not that I think it's important)
    Now, I've already got it by going to the BIOS, start from my cd and recover the computer using the cd.

    Hi Donna,

    Welcome to the community forums of Microsoft and thanks for posting the question. According to the description, computer is blocked to updates (3 of 3 100% full) configuration. We will perform some troubleshooting steps and try to resolve the issue.

Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Back-up-the-registry ) how to back up and restore the registry in Windows)

    To rename the Pending.xml file, and edit the registry, follow these steps.

    Has) start Windows Vista and go to the system recovery options:

    2. When you are prompted to restart from the disc, press any key.

    3. When you are prompted, configure the language to install, time and currency format and keyboard or options for method of entry that you want, and then click Next.

    4. on the page to install Windows, click on repair your computer.

    5. on the System Recovery Options page, click the version of the Windows Vista operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.

    B) use the system recovery options to rename the Pending.xml file and edit the registry:

    1. in the System Recovery Options page, click on command prompt.

    2 type cd C:\windows\winsxs, and press on ENTER.

    3 type ren pending.xml pending.old, and press on ENTER.

    4. type regedit and press ENTER.

    5. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

    6. on the file menu, click on load the hive.

    7. look for the following folder:

    C:\windows\system32\config\components

    8. When you are prompted for a name, type Offline_Components.

    9. in the registry editor, find and delete the following registry subkey:

    HLKM\Offline Components\AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving

    HKLM\Offline Components\PendingXmlIdentifier

    C) exit the Registry Editor:

    1. at the invite command, type exit to quit the registry Editor.

  • Screen stuck during the update

    Believe the computer was turned off during the installation of the updates. It is now stuck at ' Configuring updates 1 3-0% complete. Regardless of what I do, I can't get out of this screen. The circular icon that shows the activity/progress moves in a clockwise direction all the while.

    I left it for hours with absolutely no progress. I turned the machine off & on and off & on in Safe Mode without success. The screen remains the same.

    Restore point:

    Try typing F8 at startup and in the list of Boot selections, select Mode safe using ARROW top to go there > and then press ENTER.

    Try a restore of the system once, to choose a Restore Point prior to your problem...

    Click Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > choose another time > next > etc.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    If restore work not and you do not have a Vista DVD from Microsoft, do a repair disc to do a Startup Repair:
    Download the ISO on the link provided and make a record of repair time it starts.
    Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.
    At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu.
    When you have changed that, insert the Bootable disk you did in the drive and reboot.
