System Restore won't work afer receive (0xc0000017) error message at startup

After installing Secure Backup of Comcast and start the first download of data, my XP Pro SP3 PC started running more and more slow and became insensitive to the point where I had to use the power switch to kill the system. Until I stopped him, Secure Backup never completed and pops up a message saying that he is stopped before the end because he has lost the internet connection. I was using a browser at the time and had no problems to access the internet.

Upon reboot, I got a message saying that Windows was corrupted and needed a DSKCHK. He appeared to remove some files and then began to start Windows but never had no more away than to show my paper withouit painted all of the icons or taskbar. So it was impossible to do anything. I rebooted and got into safe mode with the idea of uninstalling Secure Backup, but was not allowed to do safe mode. I then tried to do a system restore, safe mode and in the place where you choose the date of the restoration, I can not select (highlight) a date for the restoration.

Any ideas on how to get out of this mess?

UPDATE: (25/05/2010)

After many hours on the phone with a Microsoft technician, we had to do a fresh install of XP on a different partition. Apparently, there was a lot of problems; issue of Tech with Comcast Secure Backup, chkdsk deleted or quarantined dozens of critical files from the XP operating system and for some unknown reason, the partition on my disk was almost full; 1 GB of 20 or more in a few days earlier... !  So everything is fine now, but I now reorganize my partitions and many files in them to make it similar to what existed before the "troubles"...

The issue is closed...

    > This problem has existed for a long time.

It may be too late now since you won't restore b 'old' enough to do the system restore.

However, it is best to do Safe Mode system restore. You can give it a try.

How to go in safe mode...
Restart > immediately and repeatedly tapping the F8 key until you see a black white screen abd > use the up/down down arrow to select Safe Mode, Mode safe mode with networking, or Safe Mode with command prompt (if applicable)

You should also try to do a check of the system files. It's to look for corrupt files. He will try to fix it if it is found.

  • System Restore won't work, drives available: HP (C :) (Missing)?) Left click on the mouse also stops randomly works, works fine in safe mode.

My computer is upward, slow-running and my mouse will just randomly stop left click. I can switch the service so click right not left click function, but then cannot do the right click function. I had created a restore point before installing a program called Cain and Abel on my computer and it was just a couple of days.

When I tried to do a restore, I got a message saying I needed turn the system restore. Then my computer froze so I restarted it and selected "System Recovery" and tried to do a restore to the point that I had created before that Cain has been installed. I got a message saying that the restoration has failed then I restarted mode without failure. When I restarted in safe mode, both left and right click was working again but I got a message saying that something has been altered (I didn't write it down so you do not know what it was). He says to run CHKDSK, which I did and then the computer seemed to work again.

This is temporary, I lost my left click again and now have swung it for do the right click, left click is supposed to do, but really need to be able to do both types of clicks.

I go in to the restoration of the system, and it says I need to turn it on. When I go into system properties to turn on, the disc I want to activate to says "HP (C :) (Missing)) ' what this means and how do I do the restore point I have created 2 days ago from work?

I have a 30 GB master and slave of 160 GB. 26/03/11 I copied a large file of 11 GB of the master to the slave because I received alerts that the disc was or almost. After you have copied from C to D, I deleted the C file and the missing file of the two drives. I tried to use the restore of the system without result. No matter what I do "Unsuccessful System Recovery" is the only message I get. Is it possible to recover a file that took me hours to compile it?

This looks like a self-inflicted wound / pilot error.

Deleting files in the Recycle Bin does not release disk space.  When you delete things in the trash, all you really do behind the scenes moves the items from one folder to another folder (the folder to the Recycle Bin).  They always take place until you clear items from the trash.

System Restore won't help you recover personal files anyway - this isn't what he does.  SR cares your personal files.

A backup will help recovery of personal files.

I think it's against the rules for people at Microsoft to suggest or sometimes even to read all the information of any URL Internet that does not begin with microsoft.com, where the previous warning about third party programs.

This is a popular program of third party who sometimes helps to recover accidentally deleted files:

  • System Restore does not work, once again.

Hi, I read a topic of 2010 that has not yet been answered. I worked with a tech at Microsoft by e-mail, but when I answered: System Restore didn't work. Now it does not work yet. I had installed Returnil system safe, but I got an error msg 0 x 80004005, (third-party antivirus), so I uninstalled the program. I went through the registry and delete something with Returnil all 4 sections of the registry. Remove the common files folder that was left after uninstalling. Restarted my computer several times. I use MSE, with free versions of spywareblaster and MBAB, who are both at the request not in real time. I tried to restore to a time before I had installed Returnil first, (I installed and uninstalled 3 times in 2 days) and could not. I tried to use a snapshot to restore spywareblaster and managed to restore to the point 2 x before installing because forward the installation of point returnil has been altered. At the moment no malware has been detected and no threat of MSE. What to do next?

Thanks in advance for any help. Liz.

Here's my usual route to find out how to reinstall System Restore:

If you have already run MBAM and SAS, temporarily disabled your antivirus and anti-malware applications and tried your Safe Mode system restore and you still get the restoration of the system to work, you must reinstall just your system restore.  You do not have to reinstall XP - just reinstall the system restore part.

System Restore is a frequent target of attacks by malicious software.

When you reinstall the system restore, all your current Restore Points will be deleted and you must restart your computer once the installation is complete.  After the reboot, a new Restore Point will be created as a new point of system control in your calendar of SR.

If your system had a malware infection, it could be that some of the files in your old Restore Points are also infected up to wipe out the 'old' and new is often a good idea if you wonder if the old Restore Points are infected or not.

Assuming that your XP is installed on drive C of your computer:

As you go through the reinstallation of the RS, the resettlement will be asked to locate certain files as you go along and ask your XP installation CD.   If you do not have a genuine XP bootable installation CD, you can change the path where Setup looks for files one at a time, because they are needed.  More on that later.

    Navigate to the following folder:

    c:\Windows\Inf

Locate and right-click the following file:

    SR.inf

    Choose Install

If you can not see the sr.inf file, set up your system to show hidden files and show file extensions.

Click on tools, Options, view and turn on "Show the hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types", then you should be able to see the file c:\windows\inf\sr.inf.

Installation can request files from the c:\windows\inf\386 folder.  It would be your installation CD bootable XP genuine if you have one and the Service Pack installed on your system must be the same as the CD that you will use.

You don't need absolutely a CD to do the reinstall, because files must already be on your system somewhere if SR was working before.

If you are prompted for a file, and you can't find it where I suggest in my example below (it works on my system), you need to search your hard drive and find where the files on your system.

If the request to a file and you don't know where he is, let waiting for installation and click Start, search, and search for it
has requested the file and find it on your system.  If SR has already worked before, the file is already on your system somewhere.

Search finds the requested file, go back to the installation and specify the path where you found the file requested and click OK.  Installation can request several files along the way, but you can find them all.

Here's how my system works when I reinstall SR when I pretend that I don't have a genuine XP bootable installation CD:

    When you are asked:

    SR.sys

    Point the install in c:\windows\system32\drivers

    When you are asked:

    c:\windows\system32\srclient.dll

    Point install it in c:\windows\system32

    When you are asked:

    Filelist. XML

Point of installation at c:\windows\system32\restore (or c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386)

    When you are asked:

    srframe. MMF

    Point installation c:\windows\system32\dllcache (c:\windows\system32\restore)

Once installation is complete, you will receive a message that you must restart your computer.

Restart your computer and look at your schedule of SR.  You should have a new point system control in your calendar.

When you get SR working again, I ran MBAM and SAS to make sure that your system is reasonably clean of malware.

The day that you think you need to help the system restore you is not the day to discover the system restore does not work, then you need to test.

After the reinstallation, manually create a Restore Point and test the restoration process and make sure that you are convinced that it works from one end to the other.

    System Restore will not work

    Hi FriendFriend,

    1. did you of recent changes on the computer?

    2. do you have security software installed on the computer?

    3. you receive an error message when running the system restore?

I suggest that you put the computer in a clean boot state, and then try to clean boot.

It is possible that some third-party programs installed on the computer is causing the problem.

To help resolve the error and other messages, you can start Windows XP by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot". A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

    Hey there,

I recently bought this machine about a month ago. I used the Windows 8 System Restore feature to restore my pc to a previous state.

However, after running it, I got a message saying: it failed and to ensure my anti virus is disabled. Accordingly, I have disabled Norton and tried again but it still does not work.

Previously, the only problem I had with the pc was that he locked himself completely and therefore I turned off the machine that I have been unable to close.

When I rebooted, HP Support Assistant could not run and so I uninstalled and then reinstalled from website theHP. It is now resolved. The thing is I'm a little scared that something is wrong with the machine that is the reason why I think that the system restore does not work.
