The host of the defragmentation

I am running vmware server on a win2k3 server. I have my vm on the E drive. I was wondering if it would increase performance if I defragged drive E when the virtual machine is running? Is it ok to defragment this drive or it will cause problems to the virtual machine? If so I should stop all the vm and then defragment the host E drive? I would like to run the defragmentation comes with windows server 2003. Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you

On the contrary actually - you should notice works them better than ever!

  • What is the nature of the defragmentation process?

I noticed that the defragmentation process notably improves the performance of the computer. I would like to know what is actually happening during this process and how often this should be done?

Here is some information and reading extra to keep entertained you:

The best place to read about the fragmentation of NTFS is the performance Guide Windows 2000 by Mark Friedman (433 page to be exact).  When you are finished, you are unlikely to have questions on whether a NTFS file system can become fragmented or not, no question on what to do about and no question about how to do so.

Microsoft indicates in their discussions of TechNet that NTFS is designed to resist fragmentation, but it is not immune to it, and that there is an advantage in many defragment a NTFS volume.

They say that although NTFS uses more advanced algorithms in the assignment of groups of files, it is not immune to fragmentation.  It is true however, that he has developed to a lesser degree than other systems of files due to its more sophisticated design, the fragmentation

It is also possible and likely that the MFT (Master File Table) will become fragmented over time, but to a lesser extent. In addition to defragmenting files, the MFT must be défragmentée as well.

Files and the MFT may become fragmented.  Any fragmentation will slow extraction and search for files and folders.  As a result, less fragmented you queue system, better it happen.

Some alleged 'experts' will tell you that the fragmentation is not possible with NTFS, but that's not true.  NTFS is designed to resist fragmentation, but it is not immune to it.

If the fragmentation was not possible to NTFS it seems unlikely that Microsoft (and others) spend so much effort to discuss how to detect, how to cope and how to prevent it.

  • When I run the Defragmenter I end up with large blocks of fragmented files that will not move much matter how many times I run.

The report telling me I need to defragment this volume.  Total of 20% of fragmentation, 41% free space fragmentation 0% file fragmentation.  The last time I've run the defragmentation tool I don't remember this existing problem.  I think I would have noticed these large areas of red and he questioned.  It was about six weeks ago.  My computer worked more slow and sometimes simply hanging.  I downloaded Firefox a few weeks ago, but slowdown problems existed before this and I have not downloaded anything else except a program to deal with DOCX. files that do not seem to help me so I got rid of him. That's four months ago or not.  I ran so many tests I can think... hard drive check... cleaning disc etc...  I don't know how I got in this mess, nor how to correct.  I seems to me just that I close up with a disk full of files that are fragmented if I can't find a solution.  Any help would be appreciated more with gratitude.

    Please answer the following questions:

    1. What is the size of your hard drive (C :) and the amount of free space is left? (Open my computer, right-click on the icon for drive Local (c), select properties and declare what you see in the 'Général' tab for the used space and free space.)
    2. Even if you have the properties of the State open, (c) if the box down to "Allow the Indexing Service to index this disk for fast searching of files" is checked or unchecked.
    3. Right click on desktop, select Properties, and select the tab "system restore."  Is the drive (C :) followed by the system restore?  Assuming that the answer is 'Yes', make sure the drive (C :) is selected and click on the 'Settings' button.  What is reported as the amount of used disk space?  For now, simply "Cancel" your way out of these settings screens.
    4. You use integrated Windows XP Disk Defragmenter or are you a 3rd - party for this program?
    5. What version of XP, including the service pack is installed?
    6. What do you use to apply antivirus (include the version) and your membership is up-to-date?
    7. Have you scanned your system recently with MalwareBytes Anti-Malware or SUPERAntiSpyware?
  • View the details of the defragmentation

I am running Windows Vista and make defrag for the first time.  I don't know how to view the details while the defragmentation is running.  Do you need a response there.  This isn't like XP or previous OS from MicroSoft.

    Thanx, Syd

It has changed the way it was in XP.

Many people did not want the installation of XP Defrag.

Unfortunately, there is no way to have it as if it were in XP.

If you wanted it this way, you need to use 3rd party tools defragmentation.

  • How to open the window Defragmenter that shows the status of the defragmentation operation?

I was not able to open the window that shows the operation of Defrag in action to get an idea of how bad is the State of my PC Defragmenter.

Professional XP and previous systems, it opens automatically. In Vista does not work and I was not able to find it.

Is it Vista? How can I open it?

    1 million thanks!

    Hello

Vista does not have this option which was under XP to see the progress of the defragmentation.

Please read this response of mine who helped another person in these Forums:

The Vista defrag works quietly in the background without intervention on your part

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/942092

In Windows Vista, there are a lot of improvements in the defrag engine and handling of fragmentation. By default, Windows Vista uses Task Scheduler to automatically keep the defragmented hard drive. This Automatic defragmentation does not affect the performance of the Windows Vista operating system...

If you want to use a much better defragmentation program which is free and where you can see the results, I suggest this one:

  • How long the defragmentation take?

I have a Dell Inspiron with Windows Vista, and I started a defragmentation of disk more than twelve hours ago. Is this normal? The PC is fairly new (3 months) and am the only owner and user of it. This is the first time I've run a defragmentation; It is supposed to occur every Wednesday night, but I'm not sure it has been done. How long should I wait before cancelling the defragmentation, if I have to cancel all?

    Hello

The defragmenter in Windows Vista is intended to be run in the background and may take a loooooooooooooong
    time as you have noticed.

Vista Defrag is supposed to do its work quietly in the background. You don't even have to or should have to run defragmentation manually. Leave him alone and let him do his work.

If you must, try the Auslogics Disk Defrag. It's free:
You can watch the little squares blue, red, yellow, green, moving at lightning speed. You will also have a report at the end.

  • Regular disk defragmentation does not intervene. Computer can be in mode "sleep" during the defragmentation?

Disk defragmentation. will take place every week at 01:00.  Computer is in "standby" at that time.  Is this why disk frag does not happen every week?  When I defragment manually I have to confirm the status of administrator... it would have something to do with it?  I use Windows 7 Home Premium.

    Hello Lauren,

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community Forum.

You did it any significant hardware or change software on the computer before this problem?

I understand that disk defragmentation does not work as expected. When this works even if your computer is in "sleep". Therefore, I would suggest trying the following steps and check if the problem persists.

    Method 1:

Step 1: Check if the Disk Defragmenter service is running.
    a. click Start and type services.msc in the search box.
    (b) in the Services window, double-click the Disk Defragmenter service.
    c. check if the Disk Defragmenter service is set to Automatic Started .

Step 2: The question may arise also because of the intervention of third-party software. So, I suggest clean boot of the system and check if the scheduled defragmentation works.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: See "how to reset the computer to start normally after a boot minimum troubleshooting" to prepare the computer to start as usual after a repair. "

    Method 2:

Try to set the Defragmenter to wake up the computer from the mode "sleep" and check if it works.

    1. Click Start, type taskschd.msc and press enter.
    2. In the left pane, click the arrow next to the Task Scheduler Library, Microsoftand Windows to expand the folders.
    3. Click the defrag folder.
    4. In the center pane, right-click on ScheduledDefrag and click Properties.
    5. Click the general tab.
    6. Check the box run with the highest privileges .
    7. Click the Conditions tab.
    8. Check the box to enable the computer to run this task and click OK.
    9. Close Task Scheduler.

Check if the Defragmenter works to wake up the computer from the mode "sleep" as expected.

If Disk Defragmenter does not at all, then we can see the post from Bill R TechSpec responded on 19 May 2011 in the following thread.

Start, the cursor to "all programs", click on accessories, System Tools. You see them on the list? If you do, right-click on them and select either, to pin to the taskbar of the tasks, start menu or desktop.

Hi & thanks for the reply; I did as you said, but none were in the Accessories/System Tools folder.

OK, try this, click on start, computer, click once on the C:\ Drive, then right click and select "Properties". Click on the tab "Tools". Do you not see there the defragmentation tool.

Also, you can run the SFC.exe (System File Checker) tool to fix a corrupted user profile.

  • My big Hard Drive Partition will not be displayed in the Defragmenter

So, it's weird, but when I start my derangementer disc, it will not show my 'c' drive  I have 2 drives, a 'C' drive and a drive to "D".  D is just for backup, while C is for all program/system files.  Then, of course, C must defraged for the computer normally elapse.  Does anyone know a good work around or if I can re - install disk from somewhere Defragmenter (please include the link to all sites if you have a method of re-installation). Also, I tried planning as a task and C will not always be displayed.

    Hi DanSiroky,

Windows that reports using its built-in algorithms and these standards, drives
do not defragment. However, there are other commands to change how the Defragmenter
reorganizes the files on the disk. 3rd party tools can also be used for added functionality and/or
different methods for the arrangement of the file.

Take a look at the links with a similar question.

  • When running the defragmentation, showing a bar with files which is displaced

While you run Disk Defragmenter to botom of window bar indicates progress and moved the files. I looked at the names of files that is displaced, and some are very strange. Recently a few names were similar.  names cannot be exactly as show, but very similar. Really not sure if this may indicate any adware or spyware.

You can see the files in your browser cache internet or other temporary files.  For best results, you need to "clean" your as much as possible before you run Disk Defragmenter.

You can use the built-in Disk Cleanup tool (start > run > cleanmgr > OK) or an application such as Ccleaner or ATF-Cleaner.  With any of these cleaning products, including the built-in Disk Cleanup tool, you will need to exercise judgment a little in what you remove.  Do not use the 'Register' tool that comes with Ccleaner.  Do not delete the files 'Prefetch' offered by ATF-Cleaner.

You can delete your temporary Internet (aka browser cache) files directly from the browser.  For IE, start by clicking Tools > Internet Options.  Where to go from there depends on what version of Internet Explorer you have.  For Firefox, Options > advanced > network > clear now (under storage offline)

If you have multiple user accounts, log on to each of them and use the disk cleaner of your choice.

  • Can I cancel the defragmentation? __

I have a laptop with 250 GB HD have not defragged in over a year, and I have almost completed the drive and then a lot of files to a post hd, several times, so it must well overdue for a defragmentation.

Defragmenter Vista analysed and told me that he had no need of a defragmentation.

I started the defrag anyway and it was about 5 hours ago and it is still ongoing.

This is the 2nd and last time I'll ever use Defragmenter Vista - the only other time that I did it took overnight before it turns off, probably 12 hours or more.

    My questions are:

    (1) is a good idea to click "cancel defragmentation.

I saw someone in a thread in a forum State that it is OK to turn it off at any time by design.

Somone in a another forum thread never says to turn it off.

Help please. I would turn off now. Any chance to make the damage/lost data / other problems if I turn it off?

    (2) can I use the computer while it is defragmentation? At least for surfing the web?

I haven't used the computer since I started the defrag, but now have to on this post and this research question.

    (3) why do you think he said that I do not need to defragment, and then when I choose defrag anyway it's not after 4-5 hours?

    (4) I read in a thread somewhere that whenever the computer is used during a defrag, cause the Defrag to restart!

    Any truth to this?

General comment - Defragmenter in Vista is terrible. There is no excuse for not giving a bar progression and/or Visual.

It works in all? Will - this more than 5 minutes or 18 hours or never did it?

Please help - I hope it's okay to cancel defragmentation. I can now use the computer and will only use a defragmentation. Visual effects in the future (was happy with that of XP).

Lorien thanks for your detailed response and thank you to all who have contributed.

I found myself WITHOUT stopping defragmentation. When I woke up the next day she had completed defragmentation. When I went to sleep, he was already more than 12 hours that he had been executed.
