  I had the same problem.  I was able to get around by loading the driver for Windows XP 64 bit from the Canon web site and then install the printer using the normal menu of 'install new printer' Windows 8.  If I remember correctly, I could have gotten an error message or two, but the printer appears in the printer window and ran very well.  Hope this works for you as well.

  I recently tried to install VM Player on my Toshiba M200. When I restarted my computer, I found that my network connections did not work.   What I can do. I have also tried to attach a USB CD drive (Philips) but can't get the laptop to boot from it. I get an error message (so I had to research readers of CD boot) saying the laptop can not find the drive. The CD comes on during startup, but only for a second.

  I'm desperate so please let me know what options I have or what I can do about it. The physical keyboard works during startup until the first Windows startup screen appears. No NumLock or such work at the time when I get to the login screen.

  Hello. It seems to be hung trying to complete the installation. You can try to remove and reinstall. To remove it, go to settings > general > storage > storage management.   It looks like a hardware problem, not Windows.  You have to find a store near you and to have the problem diagnosed.  I suspect that it is the failure of hard drive and if you continue to exercise hard disk that may fail completely and you would not be able to recover your valuable data.

  You can go to start-> click on all programs-> select start. You can find all the programs that run at startup, here. Deleting will stop them from running at startup.
  You can also open the System Configuration to disable all programs running during startup. Go to start-> type msconfig.exe-> press ENTER. IF UAC prompts, click Yes. Opens the System Configuration window. Now go to the Startup tab and disable all applications (to remove the tick) you want to stop from running at startup. Click on apply and then OK. Restart the PC, once done.
