The problem of migration of Time Machine. Help!

Dear Group,

I have a situation that requires advice.

Try to restore my iPhoto library (119GB) backup Time Machine from an old macbook that crashed.

But my new macbook is only 150 GB, has no space and too costly to extend storage.

I tried to copy the library directly from the backup files, but that doesn't seem to work with some 50% missing/illegible photos.

I bought an external hard drive (1 TB) and I was wondering if anyone knows how can I move the iPhoto (119GB) library in the external hard drive?

Apple migration assistant only allows me to migrate on the new macbook that is too small to contain pictures.

I hope to migrate in the external hard drive and access my library of this player in the future.

All tips are very much appreciated!

Is that iPhoto iPhoto or iPhoto Photos?  https://www.Apple.com/support/Mac-apps/photos/

  • Migration of Time Machine to the new drive, backups are larger than the Original drive

I am currently migrating my Time Machine backups from a 2 TB WD My Passport for Mac to a new WD 6 to my book for Mac. I have 63 backups on the old disk, and Finder says that the reader has TB filled 1.96.

However, each individual backup is about 350 GB, which certainly does not. I think normally it was something weird with the Finder listing the wrong sizes, except that when I copy the backups to the new disk, they copy effectively to 350GB a piece. I initially tried to copy everything the ~ 2 TB Backups.backupdb at once, but it was so great, she didn't, then I copy on each both a backup in a folder that I had planned to rename "Backups.backupdb" at the end. At this rate, I will fill new TB cases 6 drive long before copying all backups on.

    How is that possible?

Just to be complete, I'm using a Macbook Pro of the retina 2012, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 graphics card Intel HD 4000 1536 MB, 512 GB of storage, under OS X 10.11.3.

Time Machine saves the previous backups for the continuous backup size to become more wider until there is no more space on the backup drive. It is quite normal because Time Machine is an archive backup utility.

  • How can I change the network address of my Time Machine drive?

    Hi people,

This is my second question in 12 hours. Thanks to help I received here, I abandoned my doomed attempt to use my old AirPort Extreme and a USB key for Time Machine backups.

I've used my ReadyNAS for Time Machine backups, but it has never been reliable. I think I have tracked the question and I would like to try again. However, Time Machine remembers the old network address for the ReadyNAS unit (smb://NAS_TimeMachine.local/ReadyNAS) and does not 'see' the same unit at current address (afp://[email protected]/NASTimeMachine). You could collect that networking is not something I understand.

I think that this can be also responsible for the boring 'There was a problem... "messages that I receive at startup telling me the drive could not be mounted.

Is there a way to force the time Machine to forget the old address and 'see' a new?

    See you soon,.

Do the same for all the other disks that may appear under the heading of backup discs

Turn off and restart the AirPort Extreme

    Restart the Mac.

Click the 'clock' Time machine at the top of the screen

    Click Open Time Machine Preferences

    Click select drives

Under the heading of available records , click a disk that you want to use to highlight the disk

    Click use the disk

  • Migrate from Time Machine retains former name

I bought a new iMac and migrated from Time Machine. He kept the name of my old computer. How can I change the name? Rename the hard drive does not help.

Go to sharing in the preferences and change the name of the computer.

  • Partition the drive, then restore from Time Machine?

An iMac that I just died. She used Time Machine as a backup to an external drive. I want to resurrect the content of the iMac on an existing MacBook Pro, I own. Does make sense to partition the hard drive in the MacBook Pro and then migrate all data on the hard drive partition? The MacBook Pro is on OS 10.11.1; the iMac ran an earlier version of El Capitan.

Does make sense to partition the hard drive in the MacBook Pro...

and then migrate all data on the hard drive partition?

    Not really.

Mac OS X is basically a system of multiple users. If you do not create a user, it does not behave differently. Daily use with a user, it can give the illusion that you have the entire machine, but this isn't what is actually happening.

Mac OS X keeps always files in home directory for each user completely separate from each of the other files of the user (if any) and which is separated from system directories.

What would be much smarter is to carefully consider the names of affected users. If they are already different, simply migrate data iMac user a new account on the MacBook.

There is no need to have another partition, another copy of an almost identical system or additional copies of applications - you need the data of the user and must use Time Machine to restore all this user account, and no more.

  • That the restoration of a backup time machine, a previous password change?

That the restoration of a backup time machine, a previous password change?

It could, if the last backup was performed before the change of password, and she understood this password file.

But if you are missing a password, see this article on the search for your password with the keychain:

    Cess.html http://www.Macworld.com/article/2013756/How-to-Manage-passwords-with-keychain-AC

The fact that Time Machine does not have backed up prior to the change, or discarded a way to backup older you may have missed an opportunity to save, if you have changed it.

  • I have a MBP end 2011 running yosemite which is dead.  How can I migrate (from Time Machine) on a similar MBP (mid-2012).  I don't mind if I lose data on the MBP of the latter.  Essentially, I want my old MBP to take the newest one.

My MBP end 2011 died.  I want to migrate its content on Time Machine to a bit newer MBP.  Basically the old MBP return to the most recent.  It doesn't matter if the data on the new MBP are lost.  Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello

Yes you can do it. Pondini (here) has a few options to do.

You can also try Migration Wizard. See this article. But I'd go with Pondini, the guru of the Time Machine.

  • Here's my problem: every time I type an e-mail and I hit the letter "T", my computer opens a new tab. How can I disable this "T" by typing the problem? I would appreciate your help. Thanks, Dan

Whenever I type the letter "T", while sending an email, it causes my computer to open a new tab/page.

It's on a laptop? It is the touchpad at the origin of the problem. Go to the properties of the touchpad and disable the zoom in/out function. Basically, the left side of the touchpad is configured as the right side, except instead of scrolling up and down, it is set to follow up to zoom in and zoom out. Whenever you place your Palm and you get any contact on the touchpad, keyboard recorded pressures on the CTRL (this is how zoom works). Microsoft® Security MVP, 2004-2009

  • The problem of migration - how to reverse?

I tried to migrate data from another user on my McBook Pro, so that I could have all the data through my profile, sign in.

Conflicts re log in names reported Migration Assistant and I changed the.

Then, the migration has taken place but included all my existing profile data. So duplicate everything.

I tried to restore via Time Machine, but it had no back ups as being accessible, I guess, because my log in name has changed.

Instead of having one profile log, I now have three!

    Help!

How can I reverse the migration?

I tried once but reported insufficient disk space!

How can I reverse the migration?

Using system preferences > users and groups, remove the migrated user accounts that you do not want.

Maybe what you want to do was to replace a user account with another with the same named on your other Mac. MY will assign them unique names in the case of a name conflict, resulting an account essentially duplicated. It tells you, he'll do it, but the dialog box there is place is easily overlooked.

If you have a user account with a name such as Alistair for example and want to migrate "Alistair" of the other Mac, there are two workaround solutions. Ask, if that's what you experience.

  • How can I migrate a time machine backup external USB drive to time capsule

Searched the forums and can't seem to find an answer. With the help of El Capitan 10.11.6. You want to transfer backups Time Machine 4 years on an external USB drive on my new Time Capsule. Any ideas would be MUCH appreciated.

There is no official method because it has problems.

    There's no official way.

    Here see Q18. http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html

We recommend that people not me there. It has not proven reliable long-term. Start a new backup on the TC and keep the USB stick in the form of archive. After a few months or a year you won't have it.

You have to understand the Time Machine backup otherwise locally the CF network. It is easy enough to move the backup network local but much harder the other way around.

  • The airPort Extreme (2007) and Time Machine

    Hi all

I read the info "how to ask a good question" and apparently you need details. I'll try and be concise but informative with my problem. It has been a long journey to get to where I am, but hopefully, with a little help from this amazing community, I can get to my destination.

    Task

To produce a backup solution Time Machine for the family spending as little money as possible and using the BRIC and broc, I already have.

    Equipment available

I have a House with some ethernet cables for most rooms that through switches to allow a variety of, most entertainment devices to communicate. It is:

    1 x NAS/Media (ReadyNAS Duo v2) server,

    2 x TV (Samsung),

    2 x TEU (Beyonwiz),

2 x Apple TV (a 2 nd generation the other is the latest version)

    2 x DVD players,

    1 x iMac.

    2 x 8-port switches,

    1 x 16 switch ports,

    1 x AirPort Extreme (2007).

1 x Airport Express (age unknown but older than the extreme)

    1 x Fritz! Box 7490 Modem/Router

    Courses in place

All the associated TV stuff are connected in 2 rooms through ethernet via switch 2 x 8 ports switch 16 central port and then to the Fritz! modem/router box.

There are also all the usual WiFi going on with mobile phones, iPads and laptops.

Remarkably, it seems just to work!

However, I want to add some backup data on our computers. I tried to do by using the ReadyNAS as it is supposed to support Time Machine, but I can't it to appear as a backup destination. So, I thought, as I have AirPort Extreme, I add it to the network and attach a USB HDD for Time Machine since it is supposed to be easy. However, I've been home for hours and cannot make the HARD disk appear in system preferences/Time Machine.

I plugged the Airport Extreme in one of the switches 8 port said to create a wireless network with the same details as the Fritz! The box according to another article of the support (Airport Extreme wired AND expand network - need of entry). Airport utility shows me Wi-wired connections and seems to work.

I look at the AirPort Extreme disks tab and can see the attached USB drive here. However, it does not appear as a choice of drives available for backup in Time Machine preferences. I tried 2 different discs with the same result.

    The Question (finally)

How can I get Time Machine preferences to show the USB disk attached to AirPort Extreme as a valid choice for backups? If anyone can give me a little help in the right direction, I would be very grateful.

    Thank you for reading this,

    Grant

Unfortunately, the key here is that the version of AirPort Extreme you have does not officially support Time Machine backups on a drive to the USB port of the device.

The only version of the AirPort Extreme, which will officially support Time Machine backups on a drive in the USB port on the airport is the 802.11ac current version that looks like a "tower". Older versions of 'flat and square' of the AirPort Extreme don't support Time machine with a USB drive attached.

To check, please see "Time Machine in charge of USB drives" in this Apple support document... AirPort base stations: discs on USB - Support Apple

Support for time Machine to USB drives

OS X Time Machine supports compatible USB drives encrypted, related to the time Capsule (802.11n and 802.11ac) AirPort and AirPort Extreme (802.11ac).

Given that the average life of most wireless routers lasts about 5 years, and your AirPort Extreme seems to be about 9, your AirPort Extreme did very well for you... much better than the average. It might be time to start thinking about a replacement who will be responsible for backups Time Machine... either a time Capsule (i.e. an AirPort Extreme with a built-in hard drive) or another AirPort Extreme.

  • The problem of migration.

Nobody has mentioned this issue, which leads me to believe that no one actually did it.

Old computer was a Gateway P7805u with 320 GB of hard drive space.  New computer is a MBP 13 "with I believe the same amount or a little less.  Migration Assistant I explicitly said not to migrate the a partition that has Windows 7 installed and not the rest.  It worked... but the problem is that basically installed VMWare hard drive at its full size, so I have the a 60 GB partition which is valid and over 200GB of space not allocated is no longer.  I need a way to change this behavior; I want only the main partition, hard drive (attention, not the SCORE, the player itself) must be no more than 60 GB.  For the life of me, I see a way to change this, even though I know that it must be possible, since it is essentially a pilot.

GParted to partition changes, not to drive the changes, so it does not work.  I have nothing seems to change.

Someone at - it ideas?  It's really bothering me and the only answers I see are 'image of the old VM to the new virtual machine', but the problem is that I really don't care to buy some imaging software for something that should be integrated into VMWare.  Surely the guy who created the migration wizard could think ahead that a user can feasible to migrate a single partition on a virtual disk.

If you have used migrate it your PC... control of VMware Fusion 3 and support VMware Fusion PC Migration Agent you have no overall control over the migration of a given partition and all of the hard drive will be imported regardless of how it is partitioned!

Now if you want something different, then you must use VMware vCenter Converter Standalone or disk imaging software!

If you can't get VMware vCenter Converter Standalone to work either on a physical or virtual test and you already create a virtual machine with the help of the migrate your PC... control of VMware Fusion 3, then you will need to either use Disk Imaging Software such as ghost or similar as Clonezilla, or use an alternative method to clone the drive that there are other means to accomplish however require not more then just using the mentioned previously software disk imaging.

  • Migration using Time Machine - case sensitive issue

I get a message "the selected source can't be used for migration-source do not use a case-sensitive file system" when I try to migrate using a Time Machine backup.  Any ideas?

What this comes down to say the following:

    • Your existing backups located on a volume that is NOT case sensitive. In other words, it has been partitioned as Mac OS extended (journaled).
    • The destination drive you are trying to migrate these files to is a volume that is case-sensitive. In other words, it is partitioned as Mac OS extended (case-sensitive, journaled).

You can check this in OS x disk utility by selecting the drive and then, by selecting file > read the information.

The image below is an example of result to do. Note the value of parameter "is case-sensitive. In this case, this volume is not case sensitive, which means that a file named Bob or bob would be the same file. It is the default setting for the Mac's internal hard drive.

I think that the only option at this point is to change the volume of destination is NOT case-sensitive to proceed with the migration.

  • Migration wizard - Time Machine on Windows sharing

    Hello guys,.

I made a backup of my MacBook (Yosemite) via the time machine on a windows share ("smb://asus/TimemachineMacbook"). Inside the action, there is my folder (respectively image) "TimeMachine.sparsebundle". Everything went successfully.

I made a clear installation with El Capitan. Now I want to restore my music, photos and so on...

I am able to open the smb share and mount the 'TimeMachine.sparsebundle '. I see the backup, all files are there.

But I am not able to access this sparsebundle with the Migration Wizard. Inside the wizard, I can add an smb with the correct credentials share, but it shows me nothing to select. Just an empty list.

I also tried with afp... I installed "Acronis access Connect" on my windows computer and created an afp share "smb://asus/TimemachineMacbook". I can access with the finder. in the migration wizard, it shows me the afp share automatically (I must not add), when I select and press 'next', nothing happens...

Does anyone have a solution how to use the wizard migration with my sparsebundle on a windows machine?

    Concerning

    I did it!

Sharing should be mounted, for example: /Volumes/TimeMachine.sparsebundle

    And finally in the terminal:

    sudo hdiutil attach /Volumes/TimeMachine.sparsebundle
