ThinApp vs Citrix

Hi all

I have not yet used ThinApp but I'm currently at a decision point with regard to aspects of application environments.

Ultimately we will be to move to an environment VMware Horizon, but currently, it is necessary to deploy applications for desktop computers.

My questions are:

Thinapp can deploy to standard desktop or virtualized Windows

Thinapp can easily deal with MS Office deployments

Thanks in advance

Yes, Thinapp can be used with non-virtual computers.

Deployment of MS Office by Thinapp is possible, but can be tricky: what scenario we look at, exactly?

I packed just version 3.2 uses Windows XP and checked the features using a clean Windows XP with IE6 using demo.citrixcloud.net. After that, I moved the package to Win7 and IE8. Some components has downloaded in the sandbox, but once this is done, it worked as expected...

I does no actual customizations... Just created an entry Point to local IE so I could run IE with the bits of Citrix.

  • How to use a ThinApp airs on Citrix XenServer?

I read the white paper http://blogs.vmware.com/thinapp/2012/04/integrating-thinapp-with-xenapp.html, that sounds good, but I'm looking for technical writing or instructions on how to use a thinapp. by application on the Citrix XenApp server.

To publish the thinapp would I install MSI the thinapp on each presentation server or can I simply place a shortcut on the desktop of Citrix servers that point to the network share and flow from there?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Thank you

No, you publish it as a normal application but manually punch in the UNC path to the application instead of navigation.

  • ThinApp licenses in a Citrix XenApp environment

We try to understand the client for a license model ThinApp applied where it is deployed via Citrix XenApp / Terminal Server Services.  We have an application with ThinApp and stored on a single file server.  We have a farm of servers Citrix XenApp edition this request to a group of users.  My questions are:

    1. the client license ThinApp apply to concurrent users who are instatiating the application and it looks Citrx notice?  In other if I have 50 concurrent users should words I 50 ThinApp client licenses?

    2. the client license ThinApp applies to the Citrix server that publishes the application?  In other words if I have 50 Citrix XenApp / Services Terminal Server servers do I need 50 ThinApp client licenses regardless of the number of users access the application servers?

    3. the license ThinApp applies to the device that is running the Citrix client to 'see' the application?  In other words if I have 50 users who use the application that is published by Citrix, but they all use a single workstation at different times of the day would be I just need a ThinApp client license?  What happens if I had 1 user who uses up to 50 different jobs during his week of work - which would mean that I need 50 client licenses?

ThinApp is allowed per the client access.  Thus, customers 50 = 50 licenses.

Here is a document explaining the licenses.  http://KB.VMware.com/kb/1006248

  • Problem of ThinApp IE9 for Windows 2008 R2 Server Citrix

    Hello

I'm trying to make a package for IE9 I'll be able to run on Server 2008 R2 running Citrix 6.5

so I made this package by installing a windows 7 ent vm workstation and I capture the IE9

now on this virtual machine with windows 7, this package work very well and also on my pc running windows 2008 R2 it also work correctly

but when I try to run on no matter which of my new citrix servers open IE9, and then it shows this error popup:

"A display problem (page name) caused Internet Explorer Refresh the Web page.

and then freeze IE9. (this happen for IE9 32-bit and 64-bit, my servers are all 64-bit)

now, I'm working on it for a week now and I have googled all the net and I found every article I can find on this error

and I have tried everything with no success

now, the only difference between my PCs running on windows 2008 R2, and Citrix servers are that my pc is a physical pc running Intel i5

and all my citrix servers running on Vmware esxi 5.1 platform and I don't put all windows update install on my pc and I have Citrix install all updates from Microsoft.

So it can be a hardware problem in the context of the article I found say that it may be related to the video card driver, but if this is the case how it works on the virtual machine with windows 7 running on the same server esxi

and it can also be an update from Microsoft that makes this problem or it may be something that I don't think and that I need your help

the IE9 which are installed on my citrix server run ok and there I have no problem but the IE9 in the package I build gives me this error

one more strange thing is that in my package I didn't enter any home page and when I run this package it take home page I put in the local server as my homepage

I also build a package for IE7 and present a work very well and there it didn't happen for me that the homepage on the server has been set as my package's home page.

now, I'm trying to build this package as insulated and uninsulated and it made no difference regarding my problem, or to the homepage that originate from the local server.

so I need some help here, and I need it ASAP

    Thank you

    Your

    Hello

I found the cause of my problem, after all the test I did has been updated to Microsoft KB 2670838

who get the users name in the net as the WRONG UPDATE

    See here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_update/kb-2670838-the-evil-update/08bfdb2b-6896-4c34-89c2-16896a25dc3d

After I remove this update that are not at all necessary and is also define who you just have it as a prerequisite for upgrading IE to version 10

IE9 begin to work my package.

So if someone of you will have a problem with IE9 and time does take to load pages remove this update.

  • Virtual ThinApp and cross-app application integration

I worked with the community of isolation with Citrix for a long time and now with the applications virtual not much has changed on that front, except the apps are virtulized and listened.  One of the biggest problems we have in the industry is the integration with applications!

Applications need to talk to each other which is more common nowadays, it is often as office are full of plug-ins that brings me to my question.

I noticed that I have virtulize with ThinApp application such as outlook and run it, I have access to plug-ins and other things added by other applications as if I launched it locally (no virtulized or isolated).  With Citrix so I lauch virtual app I don't see what the environment is isolated.

Of course, it's a good thing about VMware ThinApp only questions wraping my head around how I sound reached different and if its really virtulized.

Example would be our management system document that worlddox is installed on my PC and if I run outlook ThinApp application I can access with Citrix I cannot even if I continuous to the client or the server and I WorldDox on the server.

What is the difference and how VMware?

NOTE: I know you can link profiles in citrix, but this isn't also dieal you might need flexibility for users to install local stuff that binds as well in and thinapp seems to do that only it is not free like Citrix that comes with XenApp or XenDesktop and cost an arm and a leg!

    Hello

You can imagine a ThinApp application as a virtual bubble running on the Windows operating system. All methods of isolation in the ThinApp determines whether the application can read/write to the physical machine, according to the needs. You can also set the application is not to write anything in the physical machine.

ThinApp integrates perfectly with other virtual applications also using AppLink (link of the Application).

    I hope this helps.

  • ThinApp application search "Program Files."

    Hi all

First, I must say that this is my first time with ThinApp. Use package with Citrix or M$!

I thinapped an application on a Windows XP SP2 virtual machine to own address. When I install applications on Windows 7, applications is looking for a dll in "C:\Program Files\AppsFolder\xxx.dll" and does not start.

I have looke everywhere I can't find this dll.

If I take the specific dll that apps looking in the right place, it works... (normal!)

    So here are my questions:

    1. Where will the folder and files after installing a thinapped application?
    2. How can I tell the application to search this dll?
    3. What Miss me?

Thanks for your help and sorry for my bad English!

    Patrick

    > If I take the specific dll that apps looking in the right place, it works... (normal!)

You copy the dll to C:\Program Files\AppsFolder to make it work? If this is the case, copy the dll to the appropriate folder in the ThinApp project folder and rebuild the ThinApp running the build.bat file in the folder of the ThinApp project.

By default, install a ThinApp using MSI will go to the C:\Program Files\AppName(VMware ThinApp) folder. Note that only the ThinApp executable (EXE) will be installed in this folder and copy all the files (dll) inside will not work. The best way to manage is to add/edit the changes required in the project folder ThinApp and rebuilding it will give you an updated EXE ThinApp.

  • ThinApp an Applications that only run the machine it is built on

So I try ThinApp our ERP "thick client" that developers and BA use quite strongly.  This application has a witch hunt, because it will only work from the netbios name of the machine on which it was initially installed.  Launch of the application of MSI after generating and returning on my clean-n-build machine works perfectly.  When I listen to or do a full installation for my clients to view, the survey application a security warning that is impassable basically says that the name of the computer you are trying to run on is not allowed.

At some point during the installation process of this application, the netbios name of the machine are written to a database table and an encrypted file.

I wonder if in all cases has advice for may "trick" the application into thinking it is launched the real clean-n-construction VM?  We are successfully running this application on Citrix/Terminal Server, so I know there is not no "concurrent user" problem with running the application in multiple sessions with the same machine name.

    Thank you

  • ThinApp overhead for any problems with the applications?

I can see the benefits and flexibility of ThinApp. However, I have a few questions:

    (a) what is the memory bound using vs ThinApp locally installed app?

    (b) are there applications that are difficult or impossible to ThinApp?

    Thank you

    Peter Polkinghorne

Good question! Overhead (or the impact on the number of users, you can host on a server) is exactly what we have tested with Virtual Reality Check of project phase 4: the impact of virtualization on VDI application. Worst case, you could have 25% fewer users on a host computer compared to a situation where you have locally installed applications. However, this has been tested with a virtualized Microsoft Office 2007 package, and this isn't a best practice (the best practice is to install Office to the base image). We virtualize Office to compare ThinApp with App - V and Citrix Application Streaming.

If users use only a couple of small applications virtualized, the impact is between 3% and 12%. On my blog, there is a link to the white paper of the Phase 4:

  • ThinApp in the hosting browser Page

Is it possible to host VMWare ThinApp viewers within a browser page?   For example, if you had a client application heavy that you wanted to show within a web portal within portlet window... is possible?  If Yes... How?

You want to say that the application running in the web browser, just as publishing applications? No, sorry. This isn't a native function of ThinApp. ThinApp will consolidate a request. It must always be performed centrally (using Terminal Server or Citrix) or locally on a client using local Windows OS of the client.

  • ThinApp XenApp 6 Management Console

    Hello

I had problems trying to pack the Console Citrix XenApp 6 Managemnt Thinapp.  I was using ThinApp 4.5 and just tried on 4.6.1 ThinApp which was released recently.  Neither work, but have different symptoms.  In my 4.5 ThinApp packages the mmc.exe console can not see the virtual file system, and will error with a file not found message.  In the ThinApp 4.6.1 packages I tried spawning process mmc.exe (32-bit version) and closes over and over again with 100% cpu until I disconnect or do a "taskkill /im mmc.exe /f" kill them all.

I also tried to copy the mmc.exe in the virtual file system files and the MSC via a command-line MMC.exe instead of use the exe to launch and calling also consoles uses by default.  So far I don't get anywhere.

I saw one other poster in another forum mentioning similar problems before with the MMC console (for something else not xenapp on Windows 7).  so I myself request outloud in this forum, this is a known problem with plug-ins MMC on Windows 7 or Windows 2008r2?  Has anyone packed the ThinApp before console to XenApp 6?  I packed XenApp 5 console Thinapp 4.5 without any problems before.

The relevant difference I guess is the platform which is of course Windows 2008r2 (which is 64-bit).

    Thank you

  • ThinApp package 3 x larger than the capture folder

    Hello

I have an app that takes 100 MB of space. The size of the capture folder corresponds to that.

But the package of ThinApped is 3 times the size of the capture folder.

By comparison, spoon.net and citrix streaming profiler create packages of 100 MB aprox. ThinApp package is 300 MB!

    Is this normal?

ThinApp 4.5 has a parameter optional package.ini called "OptimizedFor" which can be set to (default) ' memory' or 'disk '. ThinApp new performance and memory sharing features may lead to more big package files.

In the worst case scenario packages may be twice as large as before, but in most cases the difference in size, if it takes place, will be less important. If the size of the disk is more important than the memory usage and startup performance, you can set "OptimizeFor = disk" in package.ini under BuildOptions.

The result of such a change will cause similar as 4.0.4 and less packaging. ThinApp 4.5, executable virtual files such as exe files and dll only is not compressed inside the packages on the disc even when CompressionType = fast is enabled, unless OptimizeFor = disc is also defined.

  • Use of licenses with vmware thinapp

    Hello

We have a multiple license of Acrobat pro XI and we need to use it as thinapp on vmware infrastructure.

I want to know if there is a problem with licensing.

of course, we want to use it on a virtual machine as much as many of license we havo bought.

    Thank you

The only "thinapp" type currently supported is Microsoft AppV and then only for Adobe Adobe Reader 11.0.x and later versions.

    http://www.Adobe.com/devnet-docs/acrobatetk/tools/AdminGuide/AppV.html

They support other types of use such as WTS and Citrix but no VMWare.

But that being said, the general State of the subject is the following:

  • Curious about demo ThinApp

    Hi all

I downloaded the demo of ThinApp some time ago after hearing thereon in a VDI seminar. Recently, I decided to give it a try and dress warmly a meddlesome application that don't behave well through Citrix and then listen to this way.

Well, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it worked. Now, I want to go and see if I can convince some of the HIGHER-UPS to make us buy licenses tens. Problem is my trial ThinApp will probably be expired until I can try it empty with a group of users. Basically, my question is, during my trial ThinApp expires, all the programs I've virtualized with him do stop working?

    Thank you!

    Simple answer: Yes.

When you run packages created with a trial license, you should see the expiration date in the popup in the corner at the bottom right of the screen.

  • Because of VMware have anything that competes with MS RemoteApp or Citrix

    Hi all

I think I know the answer to this question, but I wanted to make sure that I'm not missing something.

Currently, we have in place VI3.5 and love it. I look for ways to push software to users that is easy/easy to manage for IT, but gets the user what it takes.

I'm working on a solution by using RemoteApp MS (we have a farm of TS 2008 Server) and Citrix is unfortunately out of the equation because of the costs. VMware does something that would do something similar (publication of central applications)?

I've seen and read about ThinApp, and while it seems to be a very good product, it seems that its refined installation considerably and makes so he settled on anything, but it always seems to be a big installation no matter how cut you it.

I just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas or comments.

Thank you and have a nice!

Not in the traditional way of CBS based see things, so you will be seamless applications, but you might have a little look at sight ThinApp and or view, is the new name of product VMware VDI.
