Thought of reloading Vista on my computer. Appropriate measures to use the recovery partition?

Hi, I have:

Laptop HP Pavilion DV9700 Entertainment

Windows Vista 32 SP1

--------------------------

I think about reloading Vista from scratch and want to ensure adequate to use to process the embedded Recovery partition that HP put here for me.

It's called: HP_RECOVERY (E total size: 12G 1.97 G free space)

Any advice.

I can do this, but if I can't solve my problems, I'll have to do this and want to know how.

I did as you all suggest.  Considoring my other problems with obsolete soft pkgs (office, etc.), I'll just be upgraded.

Since yesterday, I clean installed Windows 8.1 on this machine and formatted the OS (C drive.)

Install has no start-up problems, sound problems, yet remarkable stability problems.

I also have intalled office 365 and you can use all of these great products.

No more problems with my Vista corruption.

BTW, I like the way you use the 8.1 environment.

The only thing would be better to have a touchscreen.

In any case, thanks for the input.

    Hello

Some manufacturers have more available Vista recovery disks.

As happened with eMachines, you may have to try this instead:

You can also borrow and use a Microsoft Vista DVD, which contains the files for the different editions of Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) must be installed. The product key on your computer / Laptop box determines what Edition is installed.

Other manufacturers recovery DVDs are should not be used for this purpose.

And you need to know the version of 'bit' for Vista, as 32-bit and 64-bit editions come on different DVDs

    See you soon.

Can I set up a dual boot so that I can boot to Vista or XP? If so, how?

I would also like a third boot, Red Hat Linux 9.
    Any comments?

Hmmm. Usually it s possible to use two or more operating systems on the computer, but as far as I know the Toshiba Vista recovery CD formats whole disk when installing Vista and this will lead to the loss of the OS installed.
I m not 100% sure on the recovery of the newest XP CD called RECON doesn t CD include an expert mode which allows to choose between the different partitions.

So I guess that each use the recovery CD will format the HARD drive and erase the installed data. But of course, you can try to install the two BONES and to check if the restore XP CD allows to choose the second part of the installation of the OS.

If it does not, it seems that you will need to an original XP from Microsoft CD or the original CD of Vista to use the two BONES.

    Hello

Of course, you can use the Toshiba Recovery disk to go back to Vista. It contains a picture of the factory settings and this means that the Vista preinstalled with all the drivers and tools.

But note that the recovery disc erase the drive HARD integer for you should backup your data first before using the recovery disk.

In addition, ask them if you have a recovery Partition on your computer/laptop to restore it to factory settings.

See if a manual provided with the computer or go to the manufacturer's website, email or you can call for information on how to make a recovery.

Normally, you have to press F10 or F11 at startup to start the recovery process...

Another way I've seen on some models is press F8 and go to a list of startup options, and launch a recovery of standards of plant with it, by selecting the repair option.

Also ask them if it is possible to do the recovery disk/s for the recovery Partition in case of a system Crash or hard drive failure.

They will tell you how to do this.

Every computer manufacturer has their own way of making recovery disk/s.

There are 2 disks of Vista: one for 32-bit operating system, and one for 64-bit operating system.

If install a cleaning is required with a good DVD of Vista (not HP, Dell recovery disks):

At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu

Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.

Click on the icons of hard drive to open and to understand which drive is which.

Click the icon for the USB drive and click on "Actions > Change the read/write mode" so you can write to disk (it is read-only by default for security reasons).

Now to find the files you want to back up, just drag and drop them on the USB. When you're done, shut down the system and remove the USB key.

The Windows product key on the underside of your laptop is an OEM license key. This means that t can be used with other versions of Windows.

  • Where are the installation of Vista on the recovery partition files stored?

Where are the real Vista installation files stored on the recovery partition? If it helps I have a Compaq Presario SR5601UK. They are all stored in a folder or are they distributed? A quick dir at the command prompt, the only way you can access the files :-(, revealed a large amount of .wim files, mainly in "preload", but none on about 100 MB in size. I just assumed that HP uses the real Vista installation process, just gives their graphical front-end and adds some garbage in. If he does not tell everything.

Anon, they all are on partition D: and no, this isn't a hidden Vista copy. It is integrated with the HP software. This is also why you cannot repair Vista unless you have a retail copy. Other you need to perform a restore.
