Toshiba Satellite U500 overheating on Linux

Hello.

I just installed Fedora 15 on a Toshiba U500 and I noticed that it is very hot - the cpu temperature gets quickly to 80 C + and past often more than 90 c (then just pulled the fan in a few seconds).
I installed lm-sensors and sensors - detect run them, but that did not help.

You have an idea how I can fix this problem?

Have you noticed that using another distribution Linux Ubuntu for example?

I read on some forums that you could add either 'acpi_osi = Linux' or 'lapic' at the command line:

Follow this:
-Open the /boot/grub/menu.lst with a text editor
-Add one of the above options (check first 'acpi_osi = Linux' then lapic) at the end of the line starting with "kernel".

Maybe it helps

In addition, you can try to disable Visual effects in Linux

  • Need utilities Toshiba Satellite U500 - 1 8

    Hello

2 days ago, I bought laptop Satellite U500 - 1 8 with Windows 7 home premium Slovak language.
I need to reinstall Windows 7 ultimate English (I need English language, Windows 7 xp mode). Where can I get or download utilities Toshiba - Toshiba disc creator, Toshiba photo service, version 2007 60-day Microsoft office trial and Toshiba Recovery Media Creator? the Web pages are not.

I hate the version upgrade, so I bought the full version of windows 7 ultimate English.
    Please, someone help me

    Thank you
    Mimbo

Huh... I'm afraid that you won't be disappointed now, but here's the truth:

    # Your laptop model comes with the 64-bit only operating system, so if you need driver Win7, tools and utilities, you can download Toshiba support & download, but for the 64 bit ONLY OS page.
    # Toshiba recovery disc creator cannot be downloaded. If you do not use original Toshiba recovery image there is no meaning for it. This designer is not designed to create recovery for the current state image, but so much burn already created recovery (data files) to a CD/DVD media image.
    # Toshiba photo service is software, you can only use with factory settings and can not be downloaded also.
    # Microsoft office 2007 trial version is a kind of present for people who have decided to buy Toshiba laptops and it is not available as an extra option. You can use it with the factory only settings. If you want to have this trial version then contact Microsoft and ask for the download.
    # Toshiba disc creator is also additional software and can be used with the factory only settings. No download.

If you have any other questions let me know.

  • Wireless on Toshiba Satellite U500

    Hi guys!

I have the Toshiba running Windows 7 in Australia 13 ". It's about 2 weeks and all of a sudden the wireless simply does not.

I use a LAN network for office and a wireless connection at home. It will automatically connect to my home wireless when in range and when it wasn't, she would seek out others. At the office, an Ethernet cable would connect to the internet.

Yesterday, the LAN adapter seemed to have removed himself or herself off without being invited. I couldn't connect via Ethernet cable to my work network. I clicked on help, and eventually he finds a network and solved the problem.

It has not set the wireless adapter, and when I click to solve the problems that says that it is not enabled. The Wi - Fi switch is on! I can't find any networks when I click search. Anyone know what I could do. Help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you

    Daniel.

You can activate WLAN card by using the FN + F8 key combination?
    Please try it out.

  • Re: Satellite U500 - HP Win7 enterprise without losing the Toshiba Utilities

    Hi all

I bought Toshiba Satellite U500 laptop 8 months past that came with Home premium. now I'm planing to upgrade of the company since I use it for my office goal and they got the key to even.

from the windows forum I see that there is no plan to upgrade to windows 7 business and I'll have to do a clean install for this. I'm ready for a clean install, but how can I get all the Toshiba Utilities like face detection, and echo utility, creator of recovery media etc. (all the Toshiba utility that came with the laptop).

I am sure that there should be a way to do this and I would appreciate it really no solution for the same.

    Thank you.
    -KAKA-

Almost all Toshiba specific tools and utilities are available on the download page of Toshiba - http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp
Have you already checked this page to see what you can find?

I imagine that you want to install the 64-bit version and any proposed drivers, tools and utilities are the same that Toshiba used to create recovery image.

Of course, some tools such as Toshiba recovery media creator is not ready for download. You n t need this tool for your own installation. This tool is designed to recover original DVD creation.
If you want to make own configuration and installation of the OS it has nothing to do with the creation of recovery DVDs.

Please note: additional software like Nero, McAffe and other stuff that you can find in the original recovery image will be not available for download.

  • Set password Linux ATA hard drive / Toshiba Satellite Pro U200

Sorry for the long post, but I want to be as specific as possible:

    1)
I use a Toshiba Satellite Pro U200 under Linux (OpenSUSE) for some years now. Works fine without problems so far, even the fingerprint reader works. I deleted and never used the Windows XP preinstalled.

For security reasons, I have now decided to put a HDD ATA password, in case the laptop is lost or stolen (changed drive for a disk Seagate Momentus 7200 FDE.2 SATA II with full encryption of the disk material).

In order to get the protection offered by the full disk encryption, I need to set a password for the ATA. During startup, the Bios must request the password and unlock the drive only when the password is correct.

    2)
My problem is: in the Toshiba laptop it is impossible to set the hard drive ATA password directly in the bios (as is possible in HP laptops, for example). Toshiba there is only one way to set the password to disk, which is a software utility for Windows XP (named 'Assist'). But I don't want to change the operating system only to set this password.

    3)
Therefore, I tried the linux instructions

    hdparm - user-master m - security-all-pass SecretMasterPassword/dev/sda
    hdparm - user-master u - security-all-pass SecretUserPassword/dev/sda

which are used for adjustment ATA passwords. Indeed, at first, it seems to work very well. The password is set and the drive is locked.

    4)
When I restart the laptop, the Bios the HDD password request, as it should do.

But he does not accept the SecretUserPassword prior to seizure. The answer is "wrong password", or similar.

    5)
    Analysis:

I have no doubt that the password has been set correctly: I checked by restarting the laptop through rescue DVD in linux and unlock the disc via

    hdparm - user-master u - safety - unlock SecretUserPassword/dev/sda

in order to use it. No problem, it works as supposed to. After the release, the disc is usable as usual. And I can also disable the password via

    hdparm - user-master u - security - disable SecretUserPassword/dev/sda

After you disable the password, the laptop starts normally again, but I have no password.

When I re-enable the password bios Toshiba again asks the password during initialization, but does not accept the (correct) password on entry.

    6)
Does anyone have an explanation for this behavior?

Bios Toshiba has somehow changes the password entered by the user, before being sent to the disk? I think that this would be inconsistent with the ATA standard.

Anyone managed to set/change the password to ATA in a way that the disc can be unlocked via the internal order of the Bios, without installation of Windows XP and the Toshiba Software 'Assist '?

Thanks for reading this long post so far. Any response is welcome.

  • Fan of Satellite U500 - 11 c sometimes does not start running Win 7 64 bit

    Hello

I have two Toshiba Satellite U500 - 11 c on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Sometimes, after a new start of Windows, the fans start and just run a few seconds sometimes. When this occurs, the CPU temperature gets very hot (do not know exactly how much). I found a way to return to a behavious normal just unplug the power cable and reconnect it just a second or two after.

Two laptop computers have the latest Bios and drivers of Toshiba. Somehow, it's the same behavious as under Linux.

With these experiences, I just thought that Toshiba laptop are not well properly handle ACPI Fans and tempartures. Is it really inevitable?

I hope that this feedback can help...

    Hi mate

Cooling modules are controlled by the fan which is stored in the BIOS table.
Fan table contains details and information when and how fast a fans should run.

Besides computers laptop Toshiba supports protection against overheating. This protection monitors the temperature, and if the temperature is too high, the laptop turns off automatically.

If the laptop does not turn off automatically then I suppose that the temperature is not too high

    Hi juanantonio,.
If the chipset and its capabilities powersaving is no better supported you must live with temperatures a little higher...
but it's a long way at the end of specification - your system should run stable - check it out!

for the problem of wlan: go and find a driver/module for your wlan card, I guess it's a intel...
or change it with a model better supported by the operating system.

  • Satellite U500 - 10L and password protection

    Greetings,

I have Windows Vista (service pack 2) installed on my laptop Toshiba Satellite U500 - 10L (PSU5EE). Recently, I encountered a serious problem; Password Admin Windows is vulnerable through the Start Menu (hit F12 when you turn on the laptop) machine, I mean anyone with a USB/CD boot can crack the password.

Now I would restrict access to the Start Menu - or remove the boot by USB/CD options in the Menu. I just installed the updated BIOS (2.5 WIN), but unfortunately the BIOS provides no options to restrict access to or to modify the Start Menu. I find it is a major breach of security, is their anyway to deal with this problem?

    I appreciate your quick response.

    Best regards, John

  • Ubuntu on Toshiba Satellite U940 - startup of: SSD

    Hi guys,.

I think buy Toshiba Satellite U940. The reason is that he a dimmable-up ultrabook so I'll buy 16 GB of ram and a 120 GB of msata SSD. I'm going to install ubuntu. But because I'm not sure that two important things, I would ask you first.

    1. can you the msata SSD was seen directly from the bios? I want to install ubuntu on it and also to have my case start and all programs there. I ask this question because I read somewhere msata SSD it is only for the purpose of the cache and cannot be seen directly because it is in RAID mode. So can we get around this thing from the bios? I just only to manipulate the msata SSD as a disk driver normal in my bones. It is this possible?

2 are all drivers for Toshiba Satellite available for ubuntu linux U940?

Thank you guys for your time.
    Harry

    Hi Harry

Good to hear about your projects!

I can't answer your question exactly since I don't have the necessary information to do so.
However, I can tell you some things that can help!

The RAID configuration is purely software-rendering. So it can be removed from f.ex Ubuntu disk-tool.
I installed Fedora on the U840 and U940 that have the same RAID on an internal SSD flash drive and internal HARD drive.

The RAID can easily be removed and that make storage devices appears as installation targets unique (e.g. SDA and SDB).

However, I can't tell you if any data 3' rd party SSD will work in the U940.

My Setup was when I used the 32 GB SSD as a target for the OS - which is actually a LOT of space for an OS Lnux.
The internal HARD disk has been mounted as HOME.
In this way, I had the speed of the SSD for all operations of the system (boot, updates...) while having massive storage HARD drive for personal data.

Regarding the drivers, I think in addition to the basic features should work (WiFi, screen, sound, etc).
In my tests, I noticed (but is no intensive testing is) no problem don't except the backlight on the keypad was not working on older kernels.
