  I'm really skeptical if you can launch the second partition Toshiba ghost image files without using the Symantec Norton Ghost software.

  I just took the hard drive out of mine and put it back to see if I could reproduce your problem after trying several times I had no problem.
  Have you checked the pins at the end of the hard drive to see if all are damaged, another that I can't imagine what else.

  Just use the W7 installation disc to clean the disc. I always recommend what he got rid if Vista entirely.   Just to answer your question, I wouldn't wipe drive. In fact, it is not clean the disk. Filled it with a bunch of useless information so no one can retrieve what was already on the disk before. Wipe drive is used if you ever decide to take your computer to the recycling depot.

  Go into the BIOS (F1 at startup), set the "compatible" SATA mode (NO AHCI), then press F10 to save and exit, and you should be all set.

  1. new machine uses Toshiba HDD, not your old machine of Toshiba. HP uses HARD disks with many suppliers, including Toshiba.
