Turns off Windows Update

A few weeks ago out of the blue, it seemed - Action Center started giving me pop - s up saying that Windows Update has been disabled.  I clicked on the balloon and then choose the setting 'Recommended' for updates (i. e., download and install automatically).  The same scenario, however, happened a few times over since then: Action Center reports the problem to update. I click on the parameter recommended; and... a few days later: here it is again!

I installed and have aired Bitdefender 2015 on this computer because he was out of the box.  I also use Malwarebytes free as a stand-alone scanner of "second opinion". (Just for fun once, I ran a full scan with Windows Defender.  Six hours!  Nothing detected - but then...)  Every now and then, I ran Norton Power Eraser just to add a third level of assurance.

Recently, I got the small icon in the taskbar, asking me to book my free upgrade to Win10.  I did it.  I also downloaded "optional" updates on June 3 (i. e., 3068708, 3050267, 2976978).  However, I think remember me this happening before that.

Any ideas on why this is happening?

Thank you!

Hello

Please contact Microsoft Community.

I suggest that you put your computer in a State of minimum and then components to reset Windows update and verify boot.

Put your system to the clean boot state helps determine if third-party applications or startup items are causing the problem. You must follow the steps in the article mentioned below to perform a clean boot.

  • Why security essientials keep turn off windows Defender. ?

Why essential security keep turn off windows Defender?

    Hello

Windows Defender features are included in MSE, defender of loading would be redundant.

    Windows Defender antispyware =

    MSE is antivirus + antispyware.

Then think about MSE as Windows Defender with more added (which is).

    ===========================================

Here's what I use and recommend:

Avast and Prevx proved extremely reliable and compatible with everything I threw at them.
Microsoft Security Essentials and Prevx have also proven very reliable and compatible.

Avast Home free - stop any shields is not necessary except away from Standard, Web and network is working.

    Prevx - Home - free

    Windows Firewall

Windows Defender (is not necessary if you use MSE)

    Protected IE - mode

IE 8 - SmartScreen filter WE (IE 7 phishing filter)

I also IE always start with asset if filter InPrivate IE 8.
(Sometimes you have to temporarily turn off with the little icon to the left of the + bottom right of IE)

Avast - stop home - free - all shields you do no need except leave Standard, Web and network running.
(Double-click the blue icon - details look OK. - upper left Shields - those that you do not cancel).

Or use Microsoft Security Essentials - free

Prevx works well alongside MSE or Avast

Prevx - Home - small, fast, exceptional CLOUD free protection, working with other security programs. It comes

Also get Malwarebytes - free - use as scanner only. If you ever suspect malware, and that would be unusual with
Avast and Prevx running except a low occasional (not much), updated cookie and then run it as
a scanner. I have a lot of scanners and they never find anything of note that I started to use this configuration.

  • Cannot turn off automatic updates and the Error Message on Loadup and Peridoically subsequently

The following error message appears when the computer starts up, when I click on "check for updates", when I try to turn off the automatic updates in the preferences and at random times.  In the preferences, more precisely, I am able to choose the area that must go out looking for updates, but when I try to save the setup I get this exact error message.

    -----------------------------

    AdobeARM.exe

The procedure entry point CreateProcessWithTokenW is not found in the library of Hotlinks ADVAPI32. DLL.

    -----------------------------

The computer is an old laptop running Windows XP.  I think that it's Windows XP is a key reason why the error occurs.  That said I can't replace the laptop right now so I would turn off rather updated.  I've updated to the latest version of Adobe Reader from the Adobe Web site.  The new version added a 4th checkbox in the section to turn off the automatic updates, but I always get the same exact error message.

Is there a hidden Windows Settings folder I have can be directed to Adobe Reader?  A file where I can change the automatic updates option from 1 to 0 to turn it off?  Because the software does not work.

Please, create the following registry key:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\11.0\FeatureLockDown]

    "bUpdater" = DWORD: 00000000

In addition, you can run msconfig (via the Win + R), go to the Startup tab and deselct point of 'Adobe Reader and Acrobat Manager' (which corresponds to the process AdobeARM.exe), press on apply and restart your machine.

    Hello Steve,.

Welcome! Thanks for posting in the HP Support forum.

Usually, if you install the 3rd AV software part (for example, Kaspersky, Norton, McAfee, Tredn Micro...) it allows to disable Windows Defender. However you can do it manually.

    Hello

    Thanks for choosing Microsoft Community!

You have reached the right forum. Try to solve this problem.

If I understand correctly, you have problems with Windows Media Player.

Please answer these questions to better understand the issue:

    1. what operating system is installed on the computer?

    2. What is the full error message?

3 is it so long as you are on Windows Media player?

It could be that the settings are incorrect on Windows Media player.

Run the troubleshooter of settings and see if that helps:

  • Something in my system turns off Windows Defender.

Something in my system turns off Windows Defender once from time to time, and I have to keep back on.

I am running Windows XP and security programs I use are Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool,
Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware from Lavasoft.
I normally have all running at the same time, and with Spybot SD have also resident 'SD Helper' and 'Tea Timer"active.

Any ideas what could cause this problem?

    Hello

As you use Microsoft Security Essentials, the reason for this is that MSE has its own version of the Defender as part of its program.

Using both programs at the same time can cause system conflicts, etc.

    Read this information about it:

"Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP.

    http://answers.Microsoft.com/en-us/protect/Forum/protect_start/Windows-Defender-and-Microsoft-Security-Essentials/5309cb8d-02e1-40E8-974f-0dcedb9ab9fd

Q: I have to manually disable or uninstall Windows Defender, if I use Microsoft Security Essentials?
If Microsoft Security Essentials does not automatically uninstall Windows Defender on XP, you must manually uninstall Windows Defender through Control Panel of configuration/Add / Remove programs.

    See you soon.

    Hello

To enable disable Windows Media Center (WMC), follow these steps:

    1. click on the Start button and select Panel.

    2. click on programs and features.

    3. click on or turn off Windows features turn on on the left pane.

    4. develop the multimedia features and uncheck Windows Media Center.

    5. click on Yes and OK to continue.

    6. restart the computer.

    WMC would disappear now.

Please note that WMC remains stored on your hard drive and you can turn it back on if you want. Turning off WMC does not uninstall the feature, and it does not reduce the amount of disk space used by the same.

    Hi Larrygrybos,

    ·         You receive an error code or error message for the update failed?

Follow the suggestions below for a possible solution:

Method 1: You can try to manually download the Windows update client according to the edition of the operating system 32 or 64-bit:

    32-BIT downloads: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=178959

    64-BIT downloads: http://go.Microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=178960
