Unable to connect my system to the internet after reinstalling my OS.

NEED HELP IN OBTAINING MY COMPUTER CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET

I recently had to reinstall my computer Dell Dimension 4600 (Windows XP with service pack 1) because the computer crashed I lost all my files.  I worked with a Dell representative for instructions.  Yesterday we finished the installation.  But now I can't connect to the internet.  I tried myself to troubleshooting, but since I'm not well informed on the computer back and donts of installation, nothing worked for me.  Should I upgrade to windows?  Help, what do I do?

Hello Akobash

Most likely, you have not installed the drivers for your network card. Here is the link for the drivers for your system. You will need to select the arrow next to 'Network' drop-down list, and then select the network appropriate for your system driver. You probably need to register this driver on a flash drive or other portable media. Once you've saved it you can then insert the support in your Dell Dimension 4600, access media, then run the driver installation program. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation, and if necessary, you may need to restart. After that the driver installation network and you can get online I suggest you only install other drivers for your system from the link provided. If you have any questions please let us know. Thank you.

  • Something on my system starts automatically download when I connect my system to the internet.

    Download never stops

When I make a wireless connection (or even a dial-up access) to the Internet, the download starts.  I didn't ask this, and waited to see if it stops.  It never seems to.  Even after 500 MB has been transmitted. I tried selective startup with all this that deleted except what is necessary to recognize the wireless device.  That does not fix the problem.

I turned on the firewall and Norton Antivirus.

Is it possible to trace communications to tell where it comes from?  Or any other suggestions on how to fix this?

Thanks again - this time to Jack.

I agree that I'm probably lacks enough understanding to solve this problem in a forum like this.

PRTG Network Monitor myself to work, but can't find anything in which seems to follow the link which causes the continuous download.  Very probably, I didn't know how to use it properly - it came with a pretty important manual which I didn't read entirely, and what I've read, I found to be of a technical level that is beyond me.  It seemed to be a good piece of software and I enjoyed a chance to make a free download...

I looked your site ezlan and this was helpful.  I did start > run > msconfig and experimented with turning off of a variety of elements of start-up and also on the Services tab most of the non-Microsoft services.  Now I disabled all startup items, and on the Services tab I have disabled all non Microsoft services except Norton anti-virus and NovaCore SDK (which is needed to establish the connection of Virgin Mobile).  I left all on Microsoft services.  Needless to say that this configuration did not stop the download.

But here's a brilliant note: I stopped the download by 1) conclusion on TCPview the process ID (PID) that has been accumulating the ongoing increase received bytes, 2) with this PID, I went to Process Explorer and double clicked on the process that had this PID.  Then, on the Services tab, I read on each of the 25 - odd services that were running and a guess and stopped the BITS service.  Presto! Download stopped.   This service seems to take care of the updates for the operating system and other things, and I guess that's a rather crude way to fix things.   I see that in the start screen, I can uncheck the BITS service, and maybe I should do this to keep it from start to start.

So you can see that I have a fix of some kind, although I know I need to occasionally cancel for the Microsoft updates.  I will continue to operate in selective startup mode and you uncheck the BITS service in the section of the Service of the start window.

At the risk of taking more time, I ask a few questions (hopefully) final:

Offer a clue as to what kind of problem I have my 'fix'?

How much harm I do by removing the BITS service?

    Thank you very much.

    Hi DamonBrigham,

-What exactly happens when you connect to the Internet? You get an error message or error code? If Yes, indicate the same.

-Do you have a cable or a wireless connection?

If this is a wired connection, try starting mode safe mode with network and check if you can connect to the Internet successfully.

Networking Mode safe mode starts Windows in mode safe mode and includes the network drivers and services needed to access the Internet or other computers on your network.

    Hello Verashanley

    Since how long did begin?
You have added a new software or hardware to the system?
If the issue took place recently then you can try the system restore.
If you have recently added anything to the system (hardware or software), then remove.
If the system restore does not then check in Device Manager and verify that the network card is considered and no errors appear.
To open Device Manager, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click performance and Maintenanceand then click System. In the hardware tab, click Device Manager.
Check the type of network card you have and that you try to update the drivers from the hardware manufactures Web site.
Also, check the connection for the network adapter. Do you see any physical damage. When you plug the NIC saw all the lights on the network card lights up? If not, then you can deal with a hardware problem and need to contact the manufacture of the system and see about obtaining the card replaced.
Let me know the results. Thank you.
