Unreadable sectors MD3000i

Greetings!

We have a MD3000i that has been in operation for some time. It is configured with SAS 15 x 750 GB disks, and recently we experienced some failures of drives, including 1 on the 2 discs of relief in the chassis.

Initially, this chassis has been configured with:

-RAID 6 array (called RAID6-1) with 5 discs - slots 0,1,2,3,4

-Table RAID10 (called RAID 10-1) with 4 discs - slots 7,8,9,10

-Table RAID10 (RAID10-2 named) with 4 discs - slots 11,12,13,14

-2 discs labeled as spare - slots 5.6 disks

A few weeks ago, we had a drive failure in RAID 6 Bay. What is interesting is that neither the automatically replaced hot spare disks the drive failed in the RAID 6 array. As a precaution, migrate us all the data out of the matrix RAID 6, deleted the virtual disk and re-created as a RAID 10 array.

This left us with a configuration of:

-Table RAID10 (called RAID 10-1) with 4 discs - slots 7,8,9,10

-Table RAID10 (RAID10-2 named) with 4 discs - slots 11,12,13,14

-Table RAID10 (RAID10-3 named) with 4 discs - slots 1,2,3,4

-2 discs labeled as spare - slots 5.6 disks

location - failed drive - 0

Today, I started to receive warnings about a 10-2 failed RAID array. In this case the hot spare in the slot 5 came as failed and the 2nd disc of alternatives to slot 6 become active to rebuild the 10 failed RAID array.

So now, we look at 3 failed disks in the array

but this isn't really my question... just in general information.

During the process of rebuilding RAID 10-2 I started to receive warnings about the unreadable sectors. A report shows 38 unreadable sectors that have both a failure of logic and physical type. Here's where I'm a bit confused...

The report of unreadable sectors is indicating that unreadable sectors come from a virtual disk that is on the RAID array 10-2. It is the table that rebuilt today. Readers of this table are now - slots 11,12,13,6 (with 6 being the hot spare)

* BUT * the unreadable sector report is indicating that the location of the physical disk is enclosure 0, Slot 7

Storage profile report:

# RAID 10-2

0.14

0.12 [a mirrored pair with the physical disk at the enclosure 0, slot 11]

0.13

0.11 [a mirrored pair with the physical disk at the enclosure 0, slot 12]

0.6 [hot spare physical drive is sparing for disk 0, 14]

0.14

####

So I have a few questions:

1. the report of the sectors is unreadable reports numbers of slots that start at 1 instead of 0. This would make the spare drive which comes in the use of the reader with unreadable sectors

2. the storage profile report does not show a mirror to crack 0.13 this disc has been implemented mirror on the disk in the slot of 0.14 shouldn't 13 and 6 be mirrored between them now?

To be on the safe side, we are migrate all data out of the RAID array 10-2 of the recently created RAID 10-3 matrix. We are also thinking to remove the RAID array 10-2 and making a RAID 1 array, so that we can use the remaining disks under chassis hot spare parts (pending the delivery of replacement of drives we already ordered).

Perspectives or suggestions on this are appreciated.

Thank you!

Gene

After reviewing the support bundle the problem you are dealing with is a puncture of the VD. The minimum thing, I would recommend to resolve this would be to back up data and remove the Group of disks. Replace all failed drives. When it says disc 7 the failed drive is actually HARD 6 disc. Then recreate the VD with the new drives. You will need to then enter and update the firmware on controllers and firmware on the drives.

Now that I fully would you recommend to do is backup all the data of the entire table and reconfigure with a wide range of RAID. Then just break up with virtual disks rather than each has its own RAID level. You will see better performance when you have multiple disks in the disk, rather than having to group that he divided the way it is currently in place.

Please let me know if you have any other questions and I'd be happy to help you.

  • Unreadable sectors clearly detected error on MD3000

    Greetings!

We have an older MD3000 that recently recovered to a chained disk failure. (first drive went wrong, only relief has taken over and rebuilt, and then the second disc is out.) We recovered from the failure ultimately, in re-creating the disk group.

We didn't have any other readers fail since reconstruction the disk group, and looking at the table through the Manager of storage displays the recreated disk group and virtual disks as optimal. In addition, I also deleted logs (after their record on the server, the table is attached to), but I can't clear this error message from the table. The table itself is out of warranty and should be replaced in the next 30 days. I am looking for assistance in obtaining the disabled state.

  • Cannot transfer Time Machine backups on the new drive

I store my backup Time Machine on a Seagate 1.5 TB drive when the drive starts giving errors.  I had files on this computer and was able to transfer all except for 2 who were on unreadable sectors.  Fortunately, one of these files was an older archived version that I could afford to give up and the other was a temporary file in the photo library and since all other items were okay, I think I'm good.

The problem came when I tried to transfer my Time Machine backup of 800 GB for a new disk.  When I copy and Exact-paste (cmd-opt-shift-v) the Backups.backupdb to the new drive, it gets the extent of November 23, 2015 and then dies because reports of the Console to the system, it gets an IO error when you try to read:

    /Library/SystemMigration/history/migration-245250B6-4F52-4FBB-BD61-546A8C19CCD5/ QuarantineRoot/private/var/db/dyld/dyld_shared_cache_x86_64

in the relevant backup.  And because it's an IO error it simply abandons the whole process so I have no backup from November 23, included, for now.

Because the disc is unstable, I wasn't able to use disk utility to make repairs on it.  The disc is what is and I have to deal with the mess, that I do not have the disorder, that I would have.

I tried to manually place the missing files in the database, but the operating system will not let me.  I want to just copy my backup / OS X stop abandonment and be more like Windows and give me the options to "try again" or "fail" instead of just quitting!  I mean, why should I lose my backup all hierarchy of 23 November and beyond, simply because you cannot read a file, a file that I could simply replace in the backup of the current version or you can just ignore it.

I tried to copy files on and setting xattr on them to be backup items, but they are wrong.  I tried chflags parameter to make the writable directory, but it does not work.  I can't copy the missing files to fix my archives.  Help.

Please, don't try to transfer backups of a failed drive. Placing the disk aside until you don't know no longer you need the data, then delete and recycle. Start a new backup set on the new drive. For more security, you always have more than one backup.

  • failure of hard disk drive necessary to reinstall WinXP Home on replacement HARD drive

I have an of Western Digital HARD drive with my system of operating XP Home 32-bit installed on my primary C: drive.

I have run the Diagnostics tool online to WD for the reader who found intractable errors on the disc, which indicates an imminent drive failure and an email their technical support confirms the disk needs to be replaced SOON before she completely fails.

I copied all personal off the drive failed on another drive good files and am now ready to remove the failed drive and install a new replacement main primary HDD and then reinstall my XP Home on it - so - until I started to do this thinking, I would ask for tips in anticipation of a smooth, re - install on the new drive.

I got a 25 character key and proof of 8-character license key. There is a Microsoft sticker on the back of the pc (that I do not see to read right now, but its there).

So, I remove the old drive and fit the replacement drive and this format and then install my XP Home - can we see a particular problem with activation?

    concerning

Depending on whether you have a recovery CD suitable for activation key for your sticker or not, there are three possible courses of action. Each activation of the path should not be a problem unless this procedure has been done several times or your 25-character key fell into the wrong hands.

If you do not have a recovery CD

I hope that your original drive will have a recovery partition or the means to create a recovery CD. If you can create recovery media do now. In the contrary case and the original disc has a recovery partition make a clone of the original hard disk sector by sector to your new car now. If the clone is successful, i.e., that there are no unreadable sectors, is perhaps the best way to proceed in any case, especially if your PC is in good health other than the imminent failure of your HARD drive. If the clone does not work out, you can always fall back on the new installation. The advantage of a clone is that there is no re-setup software to (updates Windows or Office to give just two examples) and didn't need to be restored. I paid for the partitioning/cloning software and have no experience of all freebies out there to make recommendations, perhaps 10crackers can help with this.

If you have managed to create a recovery media, you can use it instead of cloning.

If you clone successfully you can just use it as is, or use the built-in recovery partition that you just cloned to do a clean install.

If you don't have a recovery media and cannot create an and is unable to successfully clone

You will have to contact the manufacturer of your PC to see if they can provide recovery media.

  • How would recreate the pagefile to a Windows 2008 virtual computer running on a host ESX 3i?

As the subject says, I'm looking for a way to do this.  I inherited the environment of another group and it is very small, but it performs ESX 3i on the two hosts and Vcenter version 2.5 (Infrastructure) is a bit old.  5 of 6 VM are operational, however, the 6th when turned on will not get 40% full, but then it will fail to stating that is not a swap file.  Now, normally it is not a swap file, because they are created or deleted dynamically whenever a virtual computer is powered on one of the hosts.  It's quite strange.

In the new versions / environments, there seem to be ways to recreate exchange capacity easily, but which doesn't seem to be the case here.  I don't think it's a process lock as the two hosts have restarted to clear HA agent / editions of the resource.  My guess is this has happened has been one of the hosts could not reproduce any more process for some reason any and when the VM problem has been powered down to try to erase some, the problem occurred.  Either that, or there are unreadable sectors in the data store, and perforated in this swap file black...

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to solve the problem.  Any input would be welcome.

    Thank you!

    All,

Thanks for the suggestions, but I solved the problem.  What needed to be done was to remove the virtual machine of the inventory and then re-create it as a new virtual machine under the cluster of the same name, same settings and have it use its 2 existing virtual disks.  For some stupid reason, once this is done, he managed to turn on normally and now runs without problem.

I'm not necessarily happy that this solution because it does not really help understand me what underlying the problem actually was, but I guess I can live with that.  The reason why I have not tried it earlier, is that I was afraid the vmdk would be replaced and I wanted to keep the existing information.  However, someone I work with was certain that they had done before, and that she maintained the pre-existing data, even in this older version, so I finally tried.

in any case, thanks for the support, and if someone can glean some root causes of the problem based on the solution I have just given, that would be helpful.

  • All Users Temp damaged and unreadable

Recently, every time I play a game on my computer or open a program that writes to a specific folder, I get a message that the file is "damaged and unreadable.  The folder is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Temp.  I can't open the folder as he calls the same message "corrupted and unreadable" However right click and checking the properties of the folder say it is empty.

    Things tried so far:
chdksk that indicates the volume was dirty, cleaned the inconsistencies, no bad sectors.
    has ran diagnostics hard drive which is no problem;
    ran scans with antivirus/antispyware programs updated (all results were clean);
Defragment the hard drive and ran the system cleanup.

My computer is fully patched with all Microsoft Security updates and hardware drivers are up to date.  I am running Windows XP Home edition, with 2 GB of RAM, processor 2.79 GHz, 110 GB hard drive with 83 GB free.  Does anyone have an idea re: this may be the cause and how can I solve this problem?

    Thank you.

I just wanted you to know, I have used Hirens to begin the GUI miniXP and was able to delete the TEMP folder to use.  Then, I ran chkdsk /r again and rebooted.  The folder was gone and I hired no additional error of all programs opening who was writing in this folder.  And each several reboots, the record has yet to appear again.

I have no explanation how this folder appeared and executable program wrote it, but I suspect that the hard drive could be on the way, despite the chkdsk and hddiagnostics say otherwise.

Everything is saved and I'm ready to install a new drive if the worst should happen.

Thank you for all your help with this strange problem.  I certainly appreciate.

Help, please! I thought that microsoft might know the answers, but I'm not even sure they can do it because I learned a lot about computers.

    Hello

are a. you able to boot to the desktop normally when you start after unexpected shutdown down?

    b. do the computer turns off when you open a particular application?

    c. remember that any changes before the question?

    d. what operating system is installed on your machine?
It could be the fault of the BIOS. Check with the manufacturer for updates.

    Warning of the BIOS:

BIOS change / semiconductor (CMOS) to complementary metal oxide settings can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the configuration of the BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Changes to settings are at your own risk.

In the meantime, follow these steps:

    Step 1:

You can check if you can start your computer in safe mode and disable automatic restart in case of failure among the advance options and response system comes back with the error code.

    Step 2:

In addition, you can connect to the command prompt and check the drive for errors, and check if that makes things more simple.

    a. click on start
    b. Type "cmd", right click and select "Run as Administrator"
    c. Type "chkdsk/r" and press enter

Note: If bad sectors are detected when running check disk utility and attempt recovery of bad sectors is verified during the verification of the drive for errors, data in the bad sector can be lost as they tried to recover bad sectors.

    Step 3:

Perform a Startup Repair using your Windows installation disc if you have.

  • Segments record file unreadable on my HARD drive

    Hello

I received an error while restarting my pc, I got the following message: ' File record segment 59892; 59893; 59894; 59895 is unreadable. "What should I do? I need to replace my HARD drive?

    Thank you very much.

Try to open safe mode... Turn on your pc and immediately start pressing F8 before the Windows startup Logo appears.

Then select Safe Mode from the list of options
Then login as administrator of your account and use your password, if you do not have a password, leave the field blank.
Now, once it's loaded, click Start > type CMD > and select it in the list
Now type CHKDSK C:/r , and press enter
Given that the C: drive is currently in use, it will ask you if you want to scan on reboot
    Type and press enter
Then restart your PC, it will automatically search for bad sectors and try to return spare sectors. The scan can take some time for the greatest readers, do not press a key while it is scanning.
Once the scan is completed, and the results... try to save all your data.
If she fails to completely start, download GParted Live and burn it to a disk, then make an image of your drive.
Once you have backed up your files, you can try to repair the drive using a Low Level Format like Acronis True Image tool.

  • Windows Image of a disc with potentially bad sectors?

My hard drive has given me several errors... any intel SMART, a boot error AHCI and she doesn't have a Dell Diagnostics. Yet, I can get it to boot and the system SEEMS to work very well. I did a Windows image last month when everything was fine. Once I started having these errors, I took another picture. The image is completed correctly. I ran checkdsk and it froze on stage 4... I guess I have some bad sectors. I have several questions:

    (1) the fact that the new image is complete, does this mean that the bad sectors were in an unused portion of my drive? It would be the good news that I could restore my latest data without problem from this image. Picture of windows fails if she hit bad sectors?

    (2) can I restore the previous image? If so, is it wise? That data may not have bad sector problem.

    (3) the fact that the chkdsk command has stopped processing the files, indicating the corrupted files? I read that the chkdsk with the repair command can take days... I should re - run it?

    Hi Steve,.

    Thanks for the update.

Technically, in the bad sector files are not corrupt. Since then, they are located on a bad sector, Windows or other programs will not be able to access. If none of the files is located in an area that is marked as 'bad', then it is reconfigured in a free area and all unreadable data is lost.

In the normal operation of a hard drive, the detection and remapping of bad sectors will take place so that the rest of the system has no knowledge of it and takes place before data is lost. It is likely that this is what happened to your computer.

I hope that you have taken the steps that the problem does not worsen. Please get back to us with any other questions you may have about Windows operating systems.
